I know you said this chest of drawers was probably from Ikea, but it is just like the unfinished furniture available in the 1960s. I bought a chest and night stand just like this one and finished them my self, my first projects. I still have them.
Thank you for breaking everything down in a way that someone like me, an amateur, can utilize your step-by-step information for refurbishing one of my own pieces. You are a wonderful teacher.
I really like the fact that you're ok with picking up furniture from somebody else's rubbish - my "life philosophy" is to be as eco friendly as possible (but not at all cost), but that is not always seen as "posh". That's why I really enjoy watching videos in which people are trying to do some good and make some money along the way.
@@LaughingInTinyI used to tell people "I'll dig thru someone's trash to save an item" .. Then one day, I seen an individual spend hrs digging thru my neighbors trash. She was moving and there were a ton of bags. From that day fwd, I haven't told a sole that ... Why? ... Because what I actually meant by my statement was "if there's an item sitting by someone's trash that is visible (u know like we've watched Katie do) I'll grap it" .. What I have never done is literally open people's trash & rummage thru it .. *lord have mercy .. I can't believe I told people I did* 🤣
It seems like lighter or mid-tone stains are more popular right now, but I love a dark, rich stain. So thanks for showing that such a result can be achieved even with pine. Good job!
Katie----this video is exactly what us newbies need. Instructions, not just entertainment. Thanks so very much! Clear, concise and very helpful. Two thumbs up.
Thank you, Katie, for taking the time to explain the why's as well as the how's for doing a step a certain way as well as demonstrating options. I love your videos! This was a great save. The cute little chest has a new life.
Having some furniture pieces that are functional and classical in finish is ideal for any home. Very well done 👏 🌟 I learned a great deal from today's video on technique, wood refinishing and sanding. This will help me with my next few furniture projects for my home. Thank you Katie 🎉👍🌟
That "neutralizing" wash you did before staining really did its job. Seeing the drawer fronts before and after really proved your point! Another great one by k. scott!
It really is amazing that with a little bit of elbow grease and ingenuity a funky little dresser can be transformed into a lovely piece of furniture... An excellent job Katie!
I wish you lived local so that I could come on over and watch you do it. Pay for lessons from you. That junk piece came out beautiful! Love how you approach this restoration and help us to do the same. You are amazing and encouraging. Thank you.
@@Amerolinda54 I know right. I hope she makes good money from this channel . She deserves it for teaching something so reachable as a way to make money from nothing. Or as close to that as possible. A practical skill that was once taught in high schools across the world.
I really love the dark stain, Katie! I also really like that piece of furniture you are always working on top of. It could be a great piece to put in a kitchen!
Final product surprised me! The application of the second darker stain took it where it needed to go! (After the first stain I got serious 1990s cheap “office furniture veneer” vibes!) The final reveal shows a classy dresser and my first thought was “Add a glass top!” and you would have something like I remember from my grandmother’s home filled with high quality furniture! Great work Katie!
Me too! 😁 I'd like to see their reactions to Katie's wonderful work and the fact that they would have been wasted otherwise. Great job as always Katie! 👏 I can't do a lot due to arm issues but having always being the 'hands-on' & creative home-loving type, I'd like to try an odd little project. You always inspire me and I love watching your videos. This was a brilliant teaching video. Thank you. 🥰💐
Katie you are always a ray of sunshine! Thanks for a much needed and constructive makeover. I loved that you saved this from the trash and turned it into something lovely and useful! Bravo once again!
I have been fixing up some old dressers my nieces and nephews grew up with. My sister was getting rid of them, but I loved their shape and knew they still had life in them. I am finding your videos so helpful to know either what I have already done wrong, or how I can Dr o something easier, or better, why this didn't work, but that did. Thank you so much!! I love your videos!
I’m glad that you consider it worth while to redo an idea piece. This is great and will be wonderful and functional in someone’s home. Plus you saved it from the Landfill
Yiu brought this little guy out of the yuck to the beautiful! Awesome job transforming this one! Beautiful stain color! Lots of more years of use to go! 😊❤
Hi thank you so much for the class on how to refinish furniture I'm sure I'm not the only one who learned and enjoyed this video very much .Have a great week ❤
Another great Saturday video (that I didn't get a chance to see until Sunday!) Love seeing you transform someone's literal trash into treasure--the finished product looked like some pieces I've seen that were actual antiques, with a similar look and finish attained with age. I especially like when you work on pieces with the common "orange" finish, usually oak or pine--they look dated and get passed over because of that, but can still be made current with the right paintwash or stain.
Perfect timing for me Katie as I am about to try and make-over a solid, very orange(!!), pine bookcase - looking to finish it in a contemporary navy blue for my hallway.
This was so therapeutic to watch! And I have two pine beside tables that look very similar to how this piece looked in the beginning that I have been dying to do something about and this vid was the perfect inspiration! Thank you :D
The piece turned out cute. No shame in your game. It doesnt matter to me where it came from. I picked up a chester drawer Like 48 years ago..solid wood, one corner broke off..nothing really wrong with it but I still have it to this day. I love to find a piece and make it my own. Thanks for the tips. I just love watching to redo a piece..❤😊
I had to laugh when you talked to the fly. It was “helping” you. It stayed through the whole video even the multiple days starting from the beginning of the video. I bet it learned a lot too and enjoyed the front seat look haha. Beautiful makeover as always, I love watching your videos. Thanks.
Great update and so timely for me! I'm working on an old gross pine table and benches off FM, transforming them into a new bathroom counter and various shelves. Thanks for the tips and tricks!! Next project I'd love to see you tackle is the counter stools you picked up recently. I've got 3 the same to update. Thanks for all your helpful and enjoyable videos, Katie. Watch them all and always learn something!!!😊
I have this dresser!!! It sits in my closet filled with my extra blankets because it's a good dessert but it's so ugly. I'm so freaking inspired now!!!!
I've sanded a lot of pine lately and swirl marks have become the bane of my existence. In addition they are hard for me to see until I have applied the stain. Even special lighting doesn't really help. I have discovered that I can avoid them, for the most part, if I dampen the wood after the first sanding where I remove the old finish, let it dry then hand sand all the higher grits. It may seem like a lot of work but it really isn't as the first sand is the hardest and most time consuming the rest are just refining and go quickly and it saves a lot of time and frustration if you don't have to keep starting over because of the swirl marks. This is not 100% but it has been a great improvement for me. If anyone has any other tricks to prevent swirl marks I would appreciate hearing about them.
The purple paint in the paint wash works the same as purple shampoo on brassy hair. Colour theory, fascinating! Also, Swede here, that dresser screams 70-80 IKEA. 😊
The purple-tinted paint wash is such a good idea for pine! Also I cannot wait for you to make over the art deco vanity with the missing drawers, so excited to see what you do with that challenge
I love the dark stain on this. It looks beautiful. You always give good information. I have a dresser and 2 nightstands. I'm trying to decide whether to paint or stain.
Thank you for being so thorough with your instructions. I really like the transformation. Looking forward to more fun things you do to give furniture new life! B~}
This was soooo helpful. I know nothing about doing this work so the basic level of this was great. I don’t know if you write your own script but, your kicking @ss and taking names. I am on my third piece and sanded through veneer to the particle board underneath. I bondo’d the places and am painting on wood color over those screw ups. This suuuuucks.
Katie calling her sanders “bougie” made me laugh out loud. Thank you-I really needed a good laugh today!
😂 I am not a fancy girl but I do have some bougie tools!
Why are your videos so cathartic?! It's become an addiction. ❤ Love refinishing, love watching and learning from you.
I know you said this chest of drawers was probably from Ikea, but it is just like the unfinished furniture available in the 1960s. I bought a chest and night stand just like this one and finished them my self, my first projects. I still have them.
A foot of fresh snow, a cup of tea and a great new video equal a pleasant Saturday. Thank you!
That's my kind of Saturday! 😊
Hi from Australia, surviving a few hot days and now a cool change and some rain which is very welcome. Sunday morning cold drink and Kate.

Isn't it funny that if you find it in an "antique" store, it's worth a lot... but if you find it anywhere else people get kinda ew about it. 🙄
I really love it! And this is what I'm doing all the time. Not only furniture, but as well clothes and other utensils for daily life.

Purple shampooing the pine. Brilliant.
😂 EXACTLY!
It is so lovely with dark stain and plain knobs. I love the way you explain why you do what you with the project.
It seems like lighter or mid-tone stains are more popular right now, but I love a dark, rich stain. So thanks for showing that such a result can be achieved even with pine. Good job!
Lighter stains have been really popular for the last 5 years but the dark stuff is starting to come back around 😉❤️

Thanks for watching! I try to make sure the instructions are really clear.

Dearest Katie - I think of you as the “old wood whisperer.” This is another beautiful work of art! ❤️
This was such a good, solid makeover. I love your approach and no-nonsense advice. great job, Katie
Turned out great. You'd never know it was a trash freebie!
Cute little piece saved from the trash!
Love the stain combo color❤❤. It really adds so much depth to the piece with that color choice😊. It doesn't even look like the same dresser
That "neutralizing" wash you did before staining really did its job. Seeing the drawer fronts before and after really proved your point! Another great one by k. scott!

Your videos are so peaceful to watch. It’s my zen time and I learn so much from you!
So glad you’re enjoying the process, I love making furniture look good again!
Great job, as always. Pine is its own reward, I think. So dang soft.
Love the dark stain. You gave it new life.

I really love the dark stain, Katie! I also really like that piece of furniture you are always working on top of. It could be a great piece to put in a kitchen!
Back in the 70’s pine was finished in a dark stain. You did a fine job.

Great work Katie!
I don't like orange wood either. Love the dark wood stain. I'm one of those people who don't mind seeing painted wood. But you made it look lovely!
As always very interesting and informative. Thank you.
Great job. I always wonder if the previous owner sees your and other projects when they were taken from curb side! Great to save it from the landfill!

Great tutorial Katie. Thank you for teaching as well as entertaining with your projects
Katie you are always a ray of sunshine! Thanks for a much needed and constructive makeover. I loved that you saved this from the trash and turned it into something lovely and useful! Bravo once again!
You do such a nice job of giving a piece of furniture new life.
Great rescue and this old piece is looking absolute 2024 again !!! What a color can do !! Nice video with great tips !

You're such a good teacher, Katie! It looks fantastic.
What a great refinish. You turned a plain little piece of furniture into something high end. It should fit perfectly into a little boy’s bedroom.
Erhmagawwd ... Katie is actually refurbishing a piece?! Wonders never cease.
I didn't think the all-brown finish was going to do the piece any favours, but I have to admit the finished product is very appealing.
I love watching a good refinish job! I wonder if any of your neighbors see how you fix up their trash and then want to buy it back??😂
Hi thank you so much for the class on how to refinish furniture I'm sure I'm not the only one who learned and enjoyed this video very much .Have a great week ❤
I am so glad you learned something new and enjoyed the video! Have a great week yourself. ❤
Very informative video thank you, and the end result is great
It’s so lovely now 😄

Superb! 🎉
Back to basics is good for me.
Perfect timing for me Katie as I am about to try and make-over a solid, very orange(!!), pine bookcase - looking to finish it in a contemporary navy blue for my hallway.
soooo much useful information in your videos! love them!
Wise to leave those imperfections alone. Whenever I’ve tried to improve slight imperfections I’ve ended up worse off. Great job on the dresser.
I’ve learned that sometimes a little character goes a long way 😉
Sometimes I try to change a fault into a feature!

Yes! Thank you!
I am not a fan of dark stains but in this case it totally works! Great save!!! ❤❤❤
