I'm not trying to convince you, as I tend to agree with you, but maybe that's a number Google is comfortable with for its business. I can imagine a designer may have to work across many of Google's products, more than six times, and in a variety of roles. I'm not here to defend it, but just trying to understand it. I think once you look at it that way, then it's nothing because that is something you should be able to do in the job anyway. You should be able to be consistent, and even convince the toughest of your critics. I know it sucks, but think of it as proving to them you can do it.
It's because Google has no direct competitor. Google has become so big to act like that. That's why we need more entrepreneurs and startups, not more employees.
Honestly, it's RIDICULOUS to waste a candidate's time like that. I think it should be illegal to do more than 3 interviews. After 3, they should have to PAY for your time. Period.
I guess employers should not be discouraged to have more rounds of interviews than usual. Having said that there is definitely room for improvements in the hiring process.
To all the viewers of this video: I also want to add that being rejected for a position might not be your problem at all!! Sometimes the company simply doesn't have another spot. All we can do is move on and find our match.
What I always stay positive about is --- Now I know that I am qualified enough to pass through 6 rounds of interviews with the hottest company on the planet and that should only be more motivation and nothing else. =D
I'm currently doing the google certificate. Your videos gives me hope. I was starting doubt if the certificate will help me change into UX field. The fact you were able to do 6 rounds is actually amazing! I am rooting for your success!
Some of us will be lucky to make it past the first interview, let alone even get an interview. Congratulations on making it that far! It shows you just how good you are, and that you are that much closer to your dreams! Stay strong!
I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. As great as Google is, you were meant to grow somewhere else! That doesn't mean you can't come back in a few years to apply with Google again. On a positive note, you went through the interview stages for Google and learned so much! That alone is such an accomplishment because that means they saw your potential.
I went through all interview stages with Google for a UX design role and was rejected after the last round. Bad feeling, but now much recovered. In this video, I talked about my application process to design roles in the US, following by my learnings. I hope that this video can help you, if you are also in my position. I wish all of you all the best.
Gôod job Aliena! Don't feel bad, I'm leanrning UX design course from google on Coursera too. I just have done 4/7 and try my best with backgroud S.E.O. I come from Vietnam so it more harder to get a job. Hahaa but it's okay, try again and make it better!

I truly believe that you will get a good job. Such temporarily rejections only means they lost a chance to have an excellent people to join them. You got this. Just do it.
This is great honestly. Getting through 6 interviews at Google means your work was good enough to get you that far. The rejection is definitely going to be disappointing, but most people don't even get the first call. So, you're definitely on the right track

My heart just sank for a moment as i sacrificed my weekend and family time for the interviews and the design test and end up not getting the role. But I told myself to move on quick, take a walk and move forward.

Excellent video, I'm just beginning the job search for Junior UX positions and this video is really informative towards setting my expectations. I totally relate to the tendency to fantasize my future life and how I'll become that ideal version of myself once I land a stable job. But you're absolutely right, it's NOT the person who happens to lands their dream job who is able to then get their life together... but rather, the person who gets their life together is more likely to land their dream job. You earned a subscriber, thanks for sharing this! Best of luck to you!
@@AlienaCai Haha noo, I just paraphrased what I learned from watching your video, give yourself more credit! Side note: To make it through 6 interviews for a position at Google, I'm sure that alone is a testament to your skills and portfolio. I'm positive you'll land a job soon if you keep at it! Good luck!
Thank you for sharing this video. I find videos like these to be encouraging, not discouraging! It's refreshing to see, and a reminder that rejection is a part of this process. I hope whoever is reading this doesn't give up! Keep pushing forward. I began the Google UX course a month ago and I'm not giving up. I've accepted that the application process is going to be a long and potentially arduous process, which is why I'm applying to better paying jobs next year in my current role (Communications) and will continue to work on design on the side. Keep hanging in there!
Thank you so much for this video! the only things I see on UA-cam are the videos about success and how one got a position of UX designer and so on… it is indeed inspiring, but I feel like videos like yours reveal the whole truth behind job-seeking process, showing the real struggle. I’m currently looking for a job as well, and I wish you a lot of patience (I might need it too haha), I’m sure you will find right position for yourself! :)
Hey thanks. Many people needed this. Lot of us are going through the same thing and it's always easier when you have people working towards the same goal.
I just stumbled upon your videos and I'm also in the same situation, just recently finished the course and started job hunting. Rejection definitely sucks, but look on the flip side, you should congratulate yourself for getting 6 interviews with Google! I also appreciate your reminder about the job hunting mindset, i feel like I am wasting time when I m not doing job hunting/UX related stuff, but those small things are also what makes us who we are and I believe getting a job is just a step in a procedure, not the end goal. I am sure something better is waiting in the future, let's hang in there and never stop trying! Good luck!
I can definitely relate to your story. I only have a High school diploma and zero work experience in UX/UI design. Whenever I apply for jobs it's like 10x harder because I'm competing with people that have bachelor's degree. I decided to lock myself in a room for 7 months around the height of the pandemic in March 2020 so I can focus on Google UX/UI Certificate and building out my portfolio. Spend around 10 hours a day, looking back I would not recommend it. After I finished my portfolio, I sent out my application to 100s companies and manage to get 2 interviews just like you. (haha) First one got rejected, second one I manage to make it to the final round. keep in mind I'm competing against 40 people that have a bachelor's degree, final round was a take-home design assessment. I got a final email the next day, thinking I definitely got rejected but the title of the email says "Congrats! We would like to extend you an offer.." I still have tears in my eyes thinking about it, living the American Dreams.
Glad i found your channel, i feel enlightened. I fully understand your feeling about the rejection, so sorry for that. But, do not worry, i believe the sun will shine on you again! lace up your sleeve, keep your heads up and keep fighting!
It really is so kind of you to show us more than what other are willing to! I came from your other video about the Google course for UX design!! Thank you ♥️
Aliena, I am so very sorry that you did not land the job at Google. I am older than you, and I recall the pain of painful job rejections. But please keep your spirits up--you are a very bright, qualified and articulate candidate, and if you persevere you will find your way to "yes" with a very lucky employer. ; )
@@AlienaCai Thanks for your reply! I look forward to the day when you upload a video sharing with your audience your triumphant story of how all of your hard work resulted in your landing your dream job. ; )
Thanks for sharing your experiences Aliena. I'm in the same position as you with a different design field. Your video really helped me feel less lonely in the situation.
just found this channel cause i was worried about my google ux course, and suddenly watch this then feel totally different vibes :). Maybe right now you feel better but i wanna qoute my fav indonesian song lyrics "semua ini bukan salahmu, terus berlari yang kau takutkan takkan terjadi" so good luck sistah, something big is waiting for ya ;)
Life is tough my darling, but so are you! ♥️ I know this feels like the end of the world, but it will all work out. Aliena, you are an inspiration to many! ✨ Good things are coming your way :)
hi! I find it’s really brave of you to post this; this video was really interesting. I also find myself daydreaming when applying for dream gigs - the reality check is often hard. Good luck on the next steps!
What you talked about in the end is soo true! It feels horrible to fall into that state of not thinking about anything else other than finding a job 🥲 you stop caring for your self and or nurturing the other aspects of your life. It really is exhausting to modify your profile for every job, and way more is it to write a personalized cover letter. Sometimes you don't even get a personalized answer. I can relate to most of what you said. Thanks for sharing! ✨ Keep up the good work
I'm in the process of looking for a job and doing a career pivot after graduating school, and I just wanted to say that this video really helped me. I feel like being on LinkedIn and other platforms that everyone but me is getting hired and it can be demoralizing at times. Thank you for your honesty and advice and best of luck to all of us finding jobs!
Hey Aliena. I just discovered your channel. You're such a breath of fresh air so to speak with the style of your videos and honesty and learned so much from your experience. Sorry you had to go through that experience by the way. I'm starting to apply for UX Designer or Product Designer roles except for me....I changed careers and I'm finishing up my Bootcamp and yeah I'm doing this later in life. Loved that Steve Job's quote "You can only connect the dots backwards." Thanks for sharing and I smashed that like button! Cheers Oscar
I’m so glad you find my content valuable. Totally, looking back this rejection made a lot of sense and I’m actually grateful to it. All the best with your career transition!
I love how every tech video talks about all the open positions. Software devs. Network sec. Analysts, data science, you name it there is apparently so many open positions and the field will never stop growing but I don’t think that’s the case at all. 100 apps to get one interview is not normal or ok. If that doesn’t show this field is saturated I don’t what will.
Aliena, I sincerely wish!! you get a Job that defines all your potential, it's okay if you fail because what's important is not stopping to learn and grow, turn all your failure to future potentials. You will be in a much better place tomorrow. It's just the beginning ❤️❤️
You are wonderful…And you are correct, life is for the living…Stay strong. Don’t give up…Someone is going hire you and be so pleased they did. Thanks for the encouragement…Just about to finish the Google Course and been looking for a job for more than and a year…And will not give up until I find something…Now I am going to go have some fun while I’m doing it. Godspeed beautiful 😊
Thanks for sharing this honest story , I guess is so hard for everyone to get rejected after trying so hard and specially daydreaming about a new life with a dreamed role . It’s brave to share this story because most people want to show only the bright side of their career . Thanks for the insight about this process so cool
Great advice ! I really paused and play to write everything down 😅 Sorry you didn’t get the acceptance you were looking for but everything happens for a reason and like you said we’re all in this together !
Your videos are much appreciated Aliena. I am just entering the UX design field and, just like you, I have high hopes that after finishing this Certification Program, I will land a job at a respectable company. Great insight from your videos, I'll keep watching you. Many thanks!
This is so inspiring and informative. I am starting from absolute scratch with no degree and only history working in a completely different field. I am so nervous but this really gives me hope even though at this point you hadn’t gotten the job.
I stay at home mom for 9 years and you are right, that no feedbacks of what you doing every day. I can not imagine how many applications I have to apply to find any job qualified to my skills, however I see the difference to be useful to my family or be useful for multimillion corporations. This is a breakpoint, for my brain doesn't metter what kind of problem to solve: to work for somebody or creat own business, in both ways the problem will be solved, but second one more satisfied that I did it for myself. Through any education we were trained to be good employee but not entrepreneur. We trained to bring corporations dreams to come true, not ours. Your advise so true, even you are seeking job full-time do not forget about yourself.
You are incredible and much too nice for that alphabet company. Do not let the expectations or perceptions of others define you. Nothing but respect for you.
Thank you for your video always being full of good statements and reviews. I know how hard it is to go back to the heartbreak moments to thinking what happens back then, and what your feelings were. Even hard to tell it out loud and give others advice.
I love your video!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. Today I had an important interview and could not answer well...as I prepared... That´s why I was a bit depressed however I got energy from your honest video and can go further as a full-time job seeker (UX designer). Let´s make thousands of dots on our whiteboard!!! 👊🏼
Hi Aliena, thank you so much for sharing your experience and feelings in this video. I have went through the similar seeking work experience and got rejected from my favorite company too. I was very discouraged after the rejection and lost my motivation and hope in job hunting. After watched your video, I got inspired and I very agree that we shouldn't give up and shouldn't keep our personal life waiting till we get a job. Thank you so much for sharing and good luck in finding a dream job😀
I just checked your portfolio website and it’s really awesome! The case studies and stories are engaging and inspiring for me, an entry-level UX designer. Also, I got many helpful tips from this video. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Please keep journaling, I actually am a person who truly get enraged at those click bits of people reaching their dreams and goals in absurd happiness contexts,... like they have it all figured out. that formula got realllllll unpopular quick. your approach is humane, while giving insights and actually having something to teach. so there you go, you've actually created a The mini course for the hypervigilent yet grounded Career seeker. thank you for the honest content.
Omg I live my life saying 'after I get a job I will do xyz..' thanks for saying that, it really resonated with me! Also I think you should put your portfolio link in the video description and not just on screen :)
Absolutely love your videos and your style of relaying information. I appreciate your transparency in your journey and wish you the best of luck, you deserve it. Hope it makes you feel a little bit better gaining another subscriber!
As soon as I saw the thumbnail and read the headline of this video, I giggled🤭. I figured I should take a look at the content and see Aliena Cai story. Content was promising and delivered well. Now, I don't have to worry about Google or Microsoft rejecting me😁. AWESOME😊🤳😎👍
I have not given a single interview but you told that prepare stories before it plus make cover letter I didn't even know what a cover letter is I had to google it but your experience will help me. I appreciate that your shared it with us.
The employment process is actually ridiculous, ESPECIALLY through recruiters - I'm surprised they didn't just ghost you like they usually do. The truth is you just have to become as self sufficient as possible and don't rely on the approval of gate keepers.
Afaik cover letters arent read much. Best thing to focus on is your resume getting through ATS if you don't have a personal referral, and portfolio showing the HM what they want to see.
No one can convince me that this position needed six rounds of interviews. Employers are committed to wasting our time!

I've accepted that the application process is going to be a long and potentially arduous process, which is why I'm applying to better paying jobs next year in my current role (Communications) and will continue to work on design on the side. Keep hanging in there!
Thank you Michelle and you deserve all the best!!
I stay in your situation at this moment, and really I really feel the same as you but above need perseverant in this life and effort a lot.
Thank you and all the best 🙌
I like your sharing about "after i get the job...". It's holding us back from our passion. Start living now!
Totally 🥲
What is amazing that She was never upset as she knew where she stands. This kind of self-motivated attitude should be an inspiration.
Thanks so much for your comment❤
Thank you so much for this video!
the only things I see on UA-cam are the videos about success and how one got a position of UX designer and so on… it is indeed inspiring, but I feel like videos like yours reveal the whole truth behind job-seeking process, showing the real struggle.
I’m currently looking for a job as well, and I wish you a lot of patience (I might need it too haha), I’m sure you will find right position for yourself! :)
Thank you so much for your comment Elizaveta ❤All the best!
Hey thanks. Many people needed this. Lot of us are going through the same thing and it's always easier when you have people working towards the same goal.
Totally agree. And thank you so much for your comment!
Good luck!
I'm so proud of you and this comment is so sweat. I'm sure your mindset will take you to somewhere great!! Cheers 🍻
Thank you for being real about the interview process. Never give up and continue to push forward. You got this 💪🏾
Thank you ❤️❤️🙌
Hey there. Great to see this video. I believe sooner or later the right job will be found. The most important thing is to keep moving.
Well said!
Kelvin I am sooooo proud of you!!!!!!
Glad i found your channel, i feel enlightened. I fully understand your feeling about the rejection, so sorry for that.
But, do not worry, i believe the sun will shine on you again!
lace up your sleeve, keep your heads up and keep fighting!
Thank you so much! You made my day ☀️
It really is so kind of you to show us more than what other are willing to! I came from your other video about the Google course for UX design!! Thank you ♥️
No problem at all. Thank you so much for your comment.
Rejection is part of the process! Wishing you the best of luck in your job search, don't give up. Keep applying and eventually, you'll see the result.
Thank you! Will do!
Aliena, I am so very sorry that you did not land the job at Google. I am older than you, and I recall the pain of painful job rejections. But please keep your spirits up--you are a very bright, qualified and articulate candidate, and if you persevere you will find your way to "yes" with a very lucky employer. ; )
Thank you so much David! You made my day 😄
@@AlienaCai Thanks for your reply! I look forward to the day when you upload a video sharing with your audience your triumphant story of how all of your hard work resulted in your landing your dream job. ; )
@@davidk6269 So much motivation!! 💪
Thanks for sharing your experiences Aliena. I'm in the same position as you with a different design field. Your video really helped me feel less lonely in the situation.
Thank you so much for the comment! All the best ❤️
just found this channel cause i was worried about my google ux course, and suddenly watch this then feel totally different vibes :). Maybe right now you feel better but i wanna qoute my fav indonesian song lyrics "semua ini bukan salahmu, terus berlari yang kau takutkan takkan terjadi" so good luck sistah, something big is waiting for ya ;)
Thank you so much ❤ I looked up the lyrics and it meant a lot to me! All the best wishes to you!
Life is tough my darling, but so are you! ♥️
I know this feels like the end of the world, but it will all work out. Aliena, you are an inspiration to many! ✨
Good things are coming your way :)
Thank you so much Aaishwarya! I've adjusted my mindset and started a new round of job hunt 💪
Good luck for the future. I hope if not anything else the UA-cam videos you are making end up making a difference in your job search!
Thank you so much for your comment!
hi!
I find it’s really brave of you to post this; this video was really interesting. I also find myself daydreaming when applying for dream gigs - the reality check is often hard.
Good luck on the next steps!
Thank you so much for your comment. I'm still recovering and getting started from 0 again. Gotta do what I gotta do 💪
OMG!! The after I get a job mindset is so me right now! 😭😭
I need to stop. Thank you so much for this video
You got this! That mindset was so toxic to me. Wish you all the best in your journey ❤️
✨ Keep up the good work
Exactly 😭 Thank you so much for your comment. I'm still working on it. I think doing better on self investment these days ❤️
Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing this with us! Best!
Thank you for the support ❤️
I'm in the process of looking for a job and doing a career pivot after graduating school, and I just wanted to say that this video really helped me. I feel like being on LinkedIn and other platforms that everyone but me is getting hired and it can be demoralizing at times. Thank you for your honesty and advice and best of luck to all of us finding jobs!
Thank you for your comment Kayla ❤️ All the best with your job search journey. Looking back it will all make sense ❤️
You could cry after recording. I empathize your feeling right now
It was tough. It still is. But I'm working on it! All the best to you too!
Cheers
Oscar
I’m so glad you find my content valuable. Totally, looking back this rejection made a lot of sense and I’m actually grateful to it. All the best with your career transition!
Thank you for posting this :) It can be really hard to get rejections but you made me feel like it's okay and I'm not alone!
I'm so glad! Thanks for the comment ❤️ I'm sure you will find a better path.
Thank you for sharing your story! I was a full-time job seeker just recently and it was TOUGH!
It really is! Thank you for the comment ❤️
Yea :( There's a lot of demand for senior UX designers but almost zero demand for junior designers. Sad truth.
Yup
Aliena, I sincerely wish!! you get a Job that defines all your potential, it's okay if you fail because what's important is not stopping to learn and grow, turn all your failure to future potentials. You will be in a much better place tomorrow. It's just the beginning ❤️❤️
Thank you so much for the comment! It meant a lot to me. All the best wishes to you as well❤❤
Hello, thank you for sharing your experiences. I am so proud of you for trying and doing your best. You're amazing and don't ever forget that. 😇
Thank you so much! There's still so much to learn and improve. I'll keep going 😄
Thank you so much Adrienne! Your comment meant a lot to me.
Thank you soooo much for your support! Hope you have a great day ahead 😁
Your videos are much appreciated Aliena. I am just entering the UX design field and, just like you, I have high hopes that after finishing this Certification Program, I will land a job at a respectable company. Great insight from your videos, I'll keep watching you. Many thanks!
Thank you so much for your comment. I'm sure your effort will lead to something great!
Hey fellow UXer. I also did six rounds and got rejected on my last round with another one of the big 5s. Just want you to know you're not alone!
Thank you so much Peter, let's motivate each other and get something that's even better 💪
Love your growth mindset! I would recommend you reach out to the consultants in your school's career centre if that's still available. Best luck!
Will do that for sure! Thanks so much for your recommandation!
This is so inspiring and informative. I am starting from absolute scratch with no degree and only history working in a completely different field. I am so nervous but this really gives me hope even though at this point you hadn’t gotten the job.
Thank you for this comment ❤️ keep it up! I wish you al the best ❤️
your videos are very helpful and sharing your experiences, especially rejections is a very admirable quality to have. Good luck to you
Thank you so much!
I completely agree! And I don't see there's anything you can't achieve given that you already worked for the hardest job as being a mom.
You are incredible and much too nice for that alphabet company. Do not let the expectations or perceptions of others define you. Nothing but respect for you.
You have no idea how your words motivates me. Thank you so much Steve ❤️
Thank you for your video always being full of good statements and reviews. I know how hard it is to go back to the heartbreak moments to thinking what happens back then, and what your feelings were. Even hard to tell it out loud and give others advice.
You are so welcome ❤️❤️
I love your video!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. Today I had an important interview and could not answer well...as I prepared... That´s why I was a bit depressed however I got energy from your honest video and can go further as a full-time job seeker (UX designer). Let´s make thousands of dots on our whiteboard!!! 👊🏼
Yes let's do it! You got this.
I’m sorry for this, I have hope you will make it. You’re capable
Thank you so much! Will do my best ❤
Thank you so much! Your comment made my day❤️ We are here together and I'm sure we both will get our best fit!
Their loss. You're sharp and super sweet and going to find a great job.
Thank you Rich!

Thank you for sharing. You are really brave! I wish you luck!
Thank you so much!
Wishing the best big sis!
Thank you so much 😊
Please keep journaling, I actually am a person who truly get enraged at those click bits of people reaching their dreams and goals in absurd happiness contexts,... like they have it all figured out. that formula got realllllll unpopular quick.
your approach is humane, while giving insights and actually having something to teach. so there you go, you've actually created a The mini course for the hypervigilent yet grounded Career seeker.
thank you for the honest content.
Thank you so much for the support!
Thank you so much! for the amazing and helpful comments you put out. You're my inspiration!
*content
I'm so glad!
Omg I live my life saying 'after I get a job I will do xyz..' thanks for saying that, it really resonated with me! Also I think you should put your portfolio link in the video description and not just on screen :)
Thanks so much for the comment I'm glad my video helped❤️ I'll do that too for the portfolio link.
I am new subscriber, I want to see your journey! Keep it up!
I am currently working on my google data analytics certification.

Thank you so much and it definitely made me feel better ❤️🩹
As soon as I saw the thumbnail and read the headline of this video, I giggled🤭. I figured I should take a look at the content and see Aliena Cai story. Content was promising and delivered well. Now, I don't have to worry about Google or Microsoft rejecting me😁. AWESOME😊🤳😎👍
Thanks for the comment 😄 It's totally find to be rejected by these companies and it was a great learning after all!
👏🏽🔥So so informative. We're rooting for you.
Thank you William!
Thank you for your transparency!!!

Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your story with us!
Thanks for listening :)
Very helpful! You're so capable and great!
Thank you so much!
I have not given a single interview but you told that prepare stories before it plus make cover letter I didn't even know what a cover letter is I had to google it but your experience will help me. I appreciate that your shared it with us.
Glad it was helpful!
The employment process is actually ridiculous, ESPECIALLY through recruiters - I'm surprised they didn't just ghost you like they usually do. The truth is you just have to become as self sufficient as possible and don't rely on the approval of gate keepers.
Thank you so much for your message. This is exactly what I'm trying to do. Will keep going! (ghosted by at least 300 other companies already)
This is literally the history of my life! Even though I graduated back in 2017 I haven’t land in a job
I'm so sorry to hear that :( I'm exploring more contract roles and possibilities outside UX too. This is a very difficult field to entry.
@@AlienaCai yes I can see that 😔
What other possibilities are you exploring?
I’m thinking about digital design but it might be too broad.
" Full-time jobseeker is the hardest job of all time ", wise word
Afaik cover letters arent read much. Best thing to focus on is your resume getting through ATS if you don't have a personal referral, and portfolio showing the HM what they want to see.
Thank you for sharing your tips! 加油!
一起加油!
