How To Build A Fold down Balcony Bar / Desk (rental friendly)

- Today I will take you through step by step the build of this DIY renter friendly Fold Away Balcony bar or desk that is the perfect addition to any space.
The fold away balcony Bar or desk is made from beautiful Blackbutt Timber purchased from Bunnings Hardware. Being built 2m long means it can accommodate 4 people comfortably for a meal. It is also a perfect desk for those looking to work outside or change up their workstation. If you have a small space or balcony then this is the perfect space saving decor idea. Being able to fold away when you're done means no space is lost and no floor area is taken up. The bar is finished with Aussie Clear Light Decking Oil. I picked this oil as I didn’t want to turn the timber any darker as I loved the character of the lighter wood. The folding brackets were purchased from Ebay and were extremely easy to install. They can carry a weight load of 100kg so are great for a number of applications. I wanted to improve my skills and hide the screws so the plug cutters were perfect. From a distance you would never know where the screws were and they were easy to make. Taking the Balcony bar to the next level. This is also the perfect renter friendly diy project as it can be removed and taken to the next home.
This video will take you through step by step of the build from start to install.

Another winner. I reckon that will get a lot of use. That blackbutt is a beautiful timber. Love the video and the end product. 🙂👍👍
Thanks Chris!! Clients were very happy and the timber made it!! So beautiful!!
We kept finding we needed a folding table. This is so easy to store. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxStL0QRChBju4aQlnTrRgBZvafFog0KU3 Opening and closing is easy as well. It has a great handle for carrying around the house. Its pretty lightweight and slides around easy. We bought it for our daughter’s first sleepover. Breakfast was a blur - but 12 7-8 year olds fit at the table with room to spare. We used it at thanksgiving and 6 adults fit comfortably on each side plus 2 on either end for a total of 8. Super easy to clean up afterwards as well.
That is what I need I would never lose my pencil ✏.
😂😂 it is hard to lose!!!
Wicked cool
What a fun idea! Really cool to see what your prototype looked like and how you changed things along the way 👍
Thank you Grant. The prototype was super helpful to work through problems and picking up issues before they became bad 😀
love the finish on it. it has a little bit of a teak wood vibe going on! Great job!
Thank you. It does have a team vibe. I loved the end colour and the feel. Very proud of it 😀
Nice build,love the pencil! Lol
😂😂 thank you.
Awesome project! Love how you showed your reasoning for changing the joint for the top board & face panel.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. 😁
Hey thank you. I think it was a much better decision. Having the prototype was invaluable with thinking problems through.
Great idea! I love that it folds down, taking up much less room than one that is in a fixed position. I may just use that idea on my deck!
Thank you. I think it’s super handy in so many applications. Perfect for any desk to put food or drink on when entertaining 😀
Ainslee you came, you saw ( sawed lol ) & conquered & I am impressed with the folding bracket & will perhaps design some projects around it.
Very happy to see the pride that this project gave you & I hope that you can get many more like it 🇦🇺🇦🇺👏🍻🍻👍👍👍
Thanks Dirk!! I’m very proud of how it came out. The folding brackets are winners and can be used in so many different applications.
That turned out so good Ainslee. Really like the detail of the gaps in the shelf contrasting the solid back panel.

Great video Ainsley! You're becoming a natural in front of the camera! Great tip on the glue on the Blackbutt, I'm going to be starting my journey into hardwoods soon and been starting to look around at what's available in Australia. Keep them coming!

Lol that was great! 🤣😅
Thank the Lord for You Tube. also thank you for sharing your techniques. I built mine similar to yours, but not a bar, its just a small table to eat out on the balcony. again thank
Thank you. Its such a great upgrade to any balcony space. Glad you found the video helpful :) Thanks for stopping by
Hahaha.. I guess you wont lose the pencil... nice little project too, Thanks.
Hahaha never can’t find it 😀 thank you
Ainslee is there anyway to seal merbau to stop the tanning from leaching out and staining the balcony.
This is amazing, and I’d love to attempt this in my own rental place. I was wondering if you had any advice for if our railing is square concrete and wouldn’t be able to have the lip for sturdiness (the blue part of your diagram?). Would that be possible at all? Assume there wouldn’t be anything to hold it in place to counter any weight/pressure
Thats awesome. If you can't have the lip I would just make the back piece a little longer and it should be long enough to hold in place. If you put rubber like we did under the part that sits on the concrete that would also stop it from moving. Hope this helps and happy building :)
Great job. Look great. Did you make the pencil too?
Thank you. The wife got sick of me loosing pencils so got me that pencil in the hope I won’t lose it 😂
Absolutely stunning! Do you make these for purchase at all?
Thank you. I do make them for purchase. If your in Sydney Australia reach out on Instrgram and we can chat :)
Great job. How do you think blackbutt or spotted gum will fair with leaching tannins? You didn't mention tannins and Im tossing building the whole thing as you did but at that stage use a tannin remover first before oil? If i do this do I risk warping the whole thing by using water on it b4 oil, or do you think it should be ok? Thank you!
Hi Chris. Thank you. I haven't had any issues with leaching. I recently refinished the bar for the client as it was just over 12 months old and it was still perfect. I just lightly sanded it and re applied the finish. Haven't had any trouble. Hope this helps :)
What is the cost?
How long to build it ?
Great Video!! I'm going to build something similar and was wondering what height was the bar built to??
Thank you. We matched the kitchen bench 😀
@@SmallFryCreations Ah thank you!!
hi great video.. i was wondering if you are using 1" or 2" thickness for the bottom support? like are those 1x2 inch or 2x4inch?
The timber itself is 20mm thick and the supports at the back between the bar bar and the balcony glass I think from memory were about 38mm. This measure was base on the particular balcony I was working on. They may not be needed. Hope this helps 😀
@Small Fry Creations thanks for responding.. i meant your bar top support which you have 5 bottom supports.. are those 20mm thick as well? or all the panels/wood you are using are all 20mm thick?
No worries. Yes they are. 5 supports under the bar top are 20mm thick and 50mm wide
What if the balcony has a round metal structure? Does this work?
Yes I believe it would. You would just want a tight fit and as long as there was also support lower down on the balcony wall you would be find. The back piece of the balcony bar stops any swing it may have.
Do you have a link for the brackets
Yep sure do. It’s in the description box of the video 😀
I’ll pay you to make me one mate

Not sure about the music.
The music is very distracting.
I can't stand the frenetic crappy background music,or the pauseless talking style.
Sounds like not for you then
