One of my favorite things about Home Improvement was the continuity of Tim building his hot rod over several years. That car was the focal point of many episode plots, and an important supporting character in its own right. This episode, for me, was the payoff of all those years of (literal) buildup. And it always stuck with me that Tim did the right thing at the end, without Wilson or anyone else needing to tell him first. Tim was a clown, and a klutz, but this one time we got to see another side of him.
To be fair Tim has shown that he is perfectly capable of home improvement and auto body work the accidents usually happen when he either misuses a tool or tries to do custom jobs that really shouldn't be done.
One of my favorite episodes of Home Improvement. Especially the ending, because it shows that Tim has learned a bit since the first episode. You think he would have taken it this well at the beginning? No way!
For the record: The car Bob Vila drove was an Aluma Coupe. The turbocharged engine that Al refers to is a 2.0L Mitsubishi Eclipse motor that did produce a genuine 370 bhp. Tim's 1933 Ford Roadster (it was Tim Allen's own car that he still owns) actually uses a version of the 350 Chev, though Allen himself isn't sure which GM manufacturer it originally came from.
To me Tim won immediately as he built the car himself. It was always funny how it was played as a joke that Bob has his made for him and it “actually worked”. I don’t give a shit if Tim’s didn’t work at all, he built that himself
xXK33M053Xx Xbox Gaming I think he did that to get a better start. It must be an automatic so he revs it up and releases the break like poping the clutch
It’s a cool car however boyd coddington wasn’t a very nice guy if anyone had the opportunity of watching that show American hot rod he built some great cars however he wasn’t very nice to his employees that’s why a good handful of them left and he got upset when some of them went to work for the competition like chip foose
In most episodes, Bob is rather humble, while Tim instigates most of the trouble between them. In this one, however, Bob was the one being the smug jerk, bragging about how great his car was and how much he was gonna kick Tim's ass.
The car Bob is driving is called the Aluma Coupe, a purely custom vehicle created by Larry Erickson and Boyd Coddington, as a tribute to custom roadsters from the 1930's and to show off Mitsubishi hardware.
@@Skyfighter64 it was not Mitsubishi hardware, it was still Chrysler hardware, which at that point, owned Mitsubishi (hence the Eagle Talon). Close though
Tim could've won but he didn't want to push it because the engine isn't broken in, yet. He was afraid pushing it would've made the engine explode or something. Tim spent 3 years building his hot rod which built sentiment toward it while Bob has his hot rod built by experts. So Tim made the right decision.
I hadn't seen this episode before, but at the video time of 1:34 minutes, this was unexpected -- high top footwear and glistening white socks on a lady. Even with modest attire as a black skirt or shorts of knee-length; this would look great. I wonder why all girls/women don't do this?
My take on hot rods is i dont think its about the speed. Its about the looks, noise and style. Tim won. No womder why the santa sleigh was decked out in the santa clause.
This comment makes no sense; the Astros built a great team through home grown talent, then picked up the right free agents to build a contender. Teams like the Yankees and Dodgers literally buy their way into winning, which is far worse than anything the Astros did.

Agreed Tim was a doofus, especially on Tool Time. However, when it came to cars and building them. That’s where Tim excelled.
If only Tim had been as mature with his wife’s car…
Tim was a terrible Carpenter, but he was an excellent mechanic
Accurate. That hot rod shoulda been apart of the cast in the credits lol.
@@lloydthomas2896 At least they didn't really kill an actual Nomad but some similar looking Plymouth wagon instead.

One of my favorite episodes of Home Improvement. Especially the ending, because it shows that Tim has learned a bit since the first episode. You think he would have taken it this well at the beginning? No way!
In the end Tim did win by not wrecking something he worked hard to build.
The Bob and Tim conflict was awesome! "I want my money back Bob"
Can we just appreciate the fact that Debbi Dunning is still stunning to this day?
54 years old and looks Great!
Homeboy was over the line, Tim wins by disqualification
As a child of the ‘90s, two things started my passion for cars; watching Jeremy Clarkson videos and watching Tim work on his hot rods 😁
what did you guys do, go to Beards R Us hahahaha, I love this show.
I love Tim's rival with Bob. Hahaha
2:58 That's cheating
Bob's car is crossing the line. He got an inch advantage on Tim before the green flag
I saw that. But in the next shot, you can see he's behind the line.

xXK33M053Xx Xbox Gaming I think he did that to get a better start. It must be an automatic so he revs it up and releases the break like poping the clutch
What a great show.
that was a pretty underwhelming race. What are they going, like 35 mph?
You can actually see Tim step on the brakes right before they cross the line
Holy crap, you're right. Good catch.
Too bad nobody gives credit to the late Boyd Coddington for building the yellow coupe.

To sum it up in a nutshell, Tim pretty much did let Bob Vila win.
He did too, you can see him press the brakes before they cross the finish line
