Varg writes this song in the perspective of the pagan, who lost everything to chritianity and is now ostracised for his old beliefs. "I will open the gates to Hell one day" in this context sees "Hell" as the old ways that have been almost burnt out by christianity. He will relit that flame which has lead him and and "awaken" others like him who have forgotten. And another line which can be interpretated is "though I seek thy hell, you close the gates before me. Your life is right and so I must follow you to your paradise" is although he wants to continue to worship his gods, no one will let him because of the authoritarian church that will force him to believe in this foreign religion he is faced with. Hope that helped clarify from his perspective and sorry for any misspellings :)

Vin, doesn't your religion teach you not to judge a person who you know a little to nothing about? The guy just believes in nature and the old gods. He believes in preserving his culture and tradition of the past and wants to pass it on to his children. I don't believe that's racist or evil but this day and age I guess it is. Watch his interviews if possible, great Christmas material, very true in his beliefs and an intellectual. Lots can be learnt from him even if you don't believe much of what he says. @@sabata9239 Yea but it's not even about race, just purely about having an open mind to ideas and thoughts that provoke a different side of consciousness. Dick nuts these days just see through one side of a spectrum and judge it like they are gods themselves.
A lot of Black Metal bands have Tolkien as an influencer, Gorgoroth is a region near the black mountains (if memory serves) in Middle Earth, and Dimmu Borgir's Shagrath is loosely named for a minor orc character in the LoTR series. Enjoying someone's art doesn't necessarily mean you support their personal beliefs, but instead, can separate the art from the artist. For instance, I can't stand Christopher Titus' political views, and believe his views on firearms are 100% uneducated, but I'll still watch his stand-up and find it funny.

Viky Singhal I’ve never heard any black metal that could be described as “beautiful” aside from latter day Bathory and maybe one song by Borknagar (Ulver’s latter stuff doesn’t count, as it’s stylistically different)
Designated Shitposter I like In the Nightside Eclipse, and I could regale you with plenty of praiseful adjectives about that album. “Beautiful” would not be one of them. So nope
It’s been a year or so since I dusted off a Burzum album. Yet the past 24 hours it’s all I have been listening to. Low and behold, what do I see when I open UA-cam tonight? Side note, Varg has explained in interviews that his music and all the church burnings that happened in this era weren’t about Satan or Satanism. It was certainly anti-Christianity, but that’s because Christians destroyed the Nordic culture and they wanted to reclaim it. An enlightening documentary I highly recommend is called Until The Light Takes Us.
I find this quite refreshing to hear from a different perspective than some black metal fan that would give a predictable response. I live in a very christian community and the people here would never even talk about much less, listen to any black metal tunes all the way through without turning the music off and getting all shitty. So, I give you guys credit for giving this music a shot and being understanding instead of being close minded. Cheers!

Wanna some emotional BM? Try "Bethlehem - Tagebuch Einer Totgeburt (Diary of a Stilborn)". This is sick! Some words of that briefcase the meaning of such harsh song: "Honestly, if all these things would have never happened in the past I doubt a band such as Bethlehem would ever exist. Those suicide/death events base on things that happened in MATTON's and my own past. MATTON's father died by hanging himself & shortly after his mother died of cancer. Myself I lost all my former friends and dudes due to suicide. My pregnant girlfriend hanged herself and the only thing I could do was cutting the clothes-line she used for the suicide. Ten of my best friends and dudes followed in two years and this made me a complete drug-addict and nervous wreck. I spent lotsa energy getting back to the light but all these things still engage MATTON and myself and the very best thing about "talking" about this all is Bethlehem and it's possibility to channel negative and horrible experiences of a former life. That's why we dedicated "Dictius Te Necare" to all suicide victims, it shall be nothing but a bulwark against forgetfulness.

Despite the fact that in America, black metal is not really caught on. You, in the states, have several decent black metal bands, the last albums of which were just wonderful, in my opinion. Check out Uada or Inquisition.
This is what black metal is all about: our deepest feelings. I'm kind of surprised by the fact you both kind of enjoyed this song, because I thought that you would completely hate it. If I could ever suggest a song, I would choose "Lost Wisdom". Also, I extremely recommend another black metal band called Ulver. They don't play black metal anymore, but I think you should give them a chance. I would strongly suggest any of the following albums: 1) "Bergtatt" or 2) "Nattens Madrigal". The lyrics are in Norwegian, but many videos in UA-cam also have the lyrics in their description. EDIT: Varg is an asshole. Just to make that clear. :)
You should do some newer Burzum now, I think it'd be interesting for you to see how it compares - do Jeg Faller or Sverddans out of his more recent albums.
Varg is a musical genius. Do i agree with everything he's done or believes in as a individual? No. Do i love his music and believe he left a mark on Black Metal?, Absolutely.
Varg ís... Complicated. He's not necessarily a BAD guy. He just loves his family and heritage, he may not admit it (ever) but he's genuinely worried that his heritage will cease to exist one day due to Christian/Catholic beliefs becoming more and more widespread. He's not racist, he's separatist. Yeah, very thin line I know, but there is a line. He's never said one race is better than another in every way. He has, however, made mention of how white people are better suited for certain climates and how black people are better suited for others. I won't defend anything he's done, but you gotta try and see it from his perspective. He could've gone down a way darker road, but thankfully he didn't. Ya silly geese

What kind of Christian miscegenates and wears Apple shirts?
Real ones, lol..
True, but I still respect the David Duke type Christians.
Modern Christians
That's about all. Peace out
I think this song (and Lost wisdom) define black metal better than any other. There is so much to it, it is hard to even begin to start explaining it. This song has always spoken to me, 15 years after I still love it.
Did you know Vargs original name was Kristian?... Ironic
It's a European name
@@Meatwad.Baggins good try ahaha
@@wilsons2882
What do you mean?
@@Meatwad.Baggins That name mean "Christian"
@@darkyman5721
Yes but that's the English version of it. Christhian is European. It means of or having to with cross. Any cross really. But most notably the zodiac cross. When Christianity came to Europe that was something they used to blur the lines between paganism and christianity. But "Christ" is European. Greek for one
I really enjoyed watching the expressions change on Sori's face as the song went on.
Burzum - Hvit Lyset Tar Oss
A much mote melodic direction, I'd say this stuff was a direct influence on a band like Wolves In The Throne Room for instance
You guys need to watch Until the light takes us. The interviews with Varg are great, and give great insight. This is also when he was in prison.
Funny guy as well, you would be very surprised.
People who race mix will never get it.
@@sabata9239 Yea but it's not even about race, just purely about having an open mind to ideas and thoughts that provoke a different side of consciousness. Dick nuts these days just see through one side of a spectrum and judge it like they are gods themselves.
Tell that to Varg on his channel. He is no fan of you "muh race doesn't matter" types..
@@sabata9239 Sure shit for brains, you seem to be more worried about it than Varg, like Varg is trying to start a Nazi socialist party in France.
Intellectual is a tainted term - I'd say he's Wise in Old Ways.
Finally! More Burzum please! Jesu Dod or Lost Wisdom are good options
Vargs music is just magical.... I love it
He did everything alone.. all the instruments plus the mixing
It's a magical moment when Burzum is one of the first artists an unborn child hears.
His screams and musicianship you can really feel what he wants you to feel! Pure Cold Raw Darkness!
Moonsorrow - Raunioilla
You'll love it. Pagan folk with black metal from Finland. Lyrics in Finnish but translations easy to find.
We also got fenriz's side project that is named after the tower saruman lives in
I love those deep riffs that always accompany a Burzum track. It’s like hiding gold at the bottom of an abyss...
Ulver - Capitel II you guys need to get more into second wave Black Metal and see the diference between those artista despite being from the same country and genre
Totally
Go to their website and vote for Ulver. I personally added Ulver to the Black Fire section. \m/
I'll keep voting for it in my alliance. I got a feeling it'll be done pretty soon...
We'll make it happen

Burzum - Jesu Dod
There a guy that does amazing covers on youtube that goes by Lycanthrop. He does Burzum, Mgla, Dissection, Gorgoroth etc. I'm extremely sick right now so i might not be able to watch this whole video.
Deadliest Assassin I think Jesu Død is best fitting for an Easter reaction.
Deadliest Assassin hope you get well soon. I'm also quite sick...
One of the few ways I can actually enjoy Burzum is by watching Lykanthrop
Deadliest Assassin He actually have his own band, and also is the live drummer of Nargaroth.
Great guy, he’s also the drummer for Nargaroth.
I play this song every day... Burzum forever\m/
One of the best songs of Burzum. Its not just a song of course. Its like a journey. ONE DAY...
pls do Bolt Thrower - the IV Crusade
Bolt Thrower-Where Next to Conquer
Bolt Thrower in general. That shit is heavy...
In Battle There Is No Law!
Gallowbraid - Oak and Aspen
Summoning - The White Tower
Caladan Brood - Book of the Fallen
Silencer - Sterile Nails and Thunderbowels. Seems appropriate after this.
Haha Yeah!
Yes, even years-seasoned Black Metal fans can take several listens before full enjoyment starts to click
Hahahaha. They will freak out XD
Peste Noire - Deuil Angoisseus / J'avais rêvé du Nord
You need to check some of his later songs like "Jeg Faller" or "Glemselens Elv", the lyrics there are pretty understandable and his vocal style is totally different. The music itself is also really beautiful and hypnotizing.
It's kind of ironic that Vin, who comes of as pretty pretentious about christianity, wears a rosary as a necklace.

I like Low Life the best. RIP Chuck.
This might be my favorite Burzum track, but it's hard to say, Det som Engang Var, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Lost Wisdom, Jesus Todd, Dunkelheit... uh so many other amazing tracks. I even like the prison keyboard albums, guy is super talented. Been trying to start a one man band myself for years, but struggle to grasp music the way he does. I got like 20 lyrics written for different shit, but making it happen is a whole different thing.
Black metal has always been emotional. That's why people like it.
Viky Singhal I’ve never heard any black metal that could be described as “beautiful” aside from latter day Bathory and maybe one song by Borknagar (Ulver’s latter stuff doesn’t count, as it’s stylistically different)
@@OneTrueVikingbard Emotion isn't synonymous with beauty.
Designated Shitposter I like In the Nightside Eclipse, and I could regale you with plenty of praiseful adjectives about that album. “Beautiful” would not be one of them.
So nope
the doors-when the musics over (isle of wight)
It’s been a year or so since I dusted off a Burzum album. Yet the past 24 hours it’s all I have been listening to. Low and behold, what do I see when I open UA-cam tonight?
Side note, Varg has explained in interviews that his music and all the church burnings that happened in this era weren’t about Satan or Satanism. It was certainly anti-Christianity, but that’s because Christians destroyed the Nordic culture and they wanted to reclaim it. An enlightening documentary I highly recommend is called Until The Light Takes Us.
Urn [Empty] I hope so. I haven’t watched all their videos in their entirety so they could have mentioned it.
Fun Fact: Burzum Is just Varg. He's the only band member in the band
im black but, i feel varg is one of the most realistic people I've ever listened to.
how so?
You’re trolling bro
White woman becomes race conscious at 8:32

Just to clarify, Varg recorded all of his Burzum material on his own. He played and recorded all of the instruments himself.
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Dimmu Borgir - Kings of the Carnival Creation
Burzum - Ea, the Lord of the Depths
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
i waited so long for Burzum …..thank you so much :D
I find this quite refreshing to hear from a different perspective than some black metal fan that would give a predictable response. I live in a very christian community and the people here would never even talk about much less, listen to any black metal tunes all the way through without turning the music off and getting all shitty. So, I give you guys credit for giving this music a shot and being understanding instead of being close minded. Cheers!
I was in remission, but I had some blood work done recently and the numbers suggest that it's coming back or already is back. I don't have to go back to the cancer doctor until March. I've been sick a lot and they think that may have been skewing my numbers, so we will see. Thank you so much for your concern :) I've just come to accept that it's something that I have to live with and made my peace with it.
This Varg Vikernes , he was in jail, he is from Norway, but he doesn't live in Norway, he lives in France. Here lyrics genius.com/Burzum-key-to-the-gate-lyrics
My Journey to the stars - Burzum !! please
Also Varg is Norwegian, So he could have been talking about the Norse Hel. Not the same as the Abrahamic take on it.
Wanna some emotional BM? Try "Bethlehem - Tagebuch Einer Totgeburt (Diary of a Stilborn)".
This is sick!
Some words of that briefcase the meaning of such harsh song:
"Honestly, if all these things would have never happened in the past I
doubt a band such as Bethlehem would ever exist. Those suicide/death events
base on things that happened in MATTON's and my own past. MATTON's father died
by hanging himself & shortly after his mother died of cancer. Myself I lost
all my former friends and dudes due to suicide. My pregnant girlfriend hanged
herself and the only thing I could do was cutting the clothes-line she used
for the suicide. Ten of my best friends and dudes followed in two years and
this made me a complete drug-addict and nervous wreck. I spent lotsa energy
getting back to the light but all these things still engage MATTON and myself
and the very best thing about "talking" about this all is Bethlehem and it's
possibility to channel negative and horrible experiences of a former life.
That's why we dedicated "Dictius Te Necare" to all suicide victims, it shall
be nothing but a bulwark against forgetfulness.
Wow. Never knew there was a background story behind any Bethlehems songs, in spite of me being a fan of them for 2 years now.
Varg Vikernes, he's the guy that killed Euronymous when they were together in Mayhem and Varg was the bass player
Belphegor - Conjuring The Dead
Greetings from London, UK
Great recommendation!
Varg may be a murderer, racist or whatever but his music is sheer genius
And yet, like with any artist, you can't dissect his works from the very mind they sprung from. No matter how many stage names he's used during his creative period.
Viky Singhal He's neither a Murderer or Racist, Even the Norwegian authorities admit that Euronymous was planning to murder him. His "Racism" is a subject of debate, I see him as a lover of his own, not a hatred of others.

It almost looked like Sori had an epiphany after listening to the song! The melody goes many places and the vocals are quite emotional - that’s why it is one of my favorite BM songs.
Glad you appreciated it - it even scored .5 more than Dunkelheit! Maybe Det Som Engang Var will fetch a 10 eventually?
Also Boxing Day was a good date choice for the reaction - I think in keeping with good timing Jesu Død will be a good one for Good Friday/Easter.. 😜

I appreciate you guys take the time to react to a band with an image like Burzum, most reaction channels steer away. Even though some of your views on Varg aren't fully accurate, it was cool seeing your ability to look past and just review the art and trying to critique it. I would be more interested in you reacting to a video from his UA-cam channel ThuleanPerspective, go right to the source to fully understand his views on race and his politics. I think you will be pleasantly surprised whether you agree with him or not
Why are _hardcore_ christians even listening to Black metal and review it on yt if they believe it is 'satanic'? And that Apple neklace... what is that all about? Christ followers support coorporations? Since when?
What is this?
Double standards?
Despite the fact that in America, black metal is not really caught on. You, in the states, have several decent black metal bands, the last albums of which were just wonderful, in my opinion. Check out Uada or Inquisition.
uada are fucking great and put out one of the best BM albums last year (2018)
Sori- where did u get that awome big coffee cup?
Jerfferson Manoel Bergtatt for sure
Varg said his favorite album is disintegration by the cure. Think he has a heart.
Was this on thulean perspective?

Way darker than stabbing a friend to death over 20 times?
@@DamnDealDone they weren't friends. And Varg was already quite paranoid about euronymous, so when he heard about euronymous' "plan" he freaked out and acted on pure nerve. Yeah, not the best thing, but he could've kept going and killing people but he didn't. Just killing one person out of reasonable fear for your life doesn't make you a terrible person, buuuuuut on the.other hand he could be lying and it was an act of anger, and he used the opportunity to get of easier than he would of had he been tried for premeditated murder. Either, not like he's going around murdering people now, so yeah, could've been worse
Moonspell - Night Eternal
Your comment about some people belonging in Hell really hit home. I don’t believe in any god or gods, but growing up in the church. I always felt more comfortable with the idea of going to Hell. Hate, pain and loneliness just is more real. Anyway I really enjoyed your review of this.
