  • On this G36 Bonanza flight, we depart Marathon, in the heart of the Florida Keys, where one doesn't dare take on more than enough expensive AvGas to waive the ramp fee (10 gallons, in case you're wondering). Some of the cheapest AvGas in Florida is available in Naples (APF), a short 45-minute hop north.

    It seems when getting an IFR clearance in the air, it is always much shorter and sometimes a more direct routing. Why don't people do that more often? Great video, thanks for sharing!

      Chuck Martin Weather is the main reason I don’t do it all the time. ATC requires a climb to their minimum vectoring altitude before they can issue a clearance. When departing a field under marginal VFR, the controller will even ask if you’re able to “maintain your own terrain and obstacle clearance” to a specified altitude (the MVA). If you can’t - say, because of a cloud layer - you won’t be able to pick up an IFR clearance.
      And if ATC is busy, there’s no guarantee you’ll get a clearance while airborne in a timely manner. I once departed Catalina Island, called SoCal approach for my IFR, and didn’t get it until I was damn near the Arizona border!
