How to Use a Hi-Lift Style Jack

- As Hi-Lift style jacks have become increasingly common with recreational off-road drivers in 4x4 vehicles as well as military and emergency services around the world, it's more important than ever to know how to properly operate this style of jack safely and effectively. While Hi-Lift style jacks can be extremely useful around hardcore off road vehicles with heavy duty bumpers and rock sliders, their usefulness around stock production vehicles is extremely limited.
The standard uses of the hi lift style jack off road include: lifting a vehicle out of a hole or over an obstacle, lifting a vehicle to re-inflate or change a tire, using the jack as a come-along or hand winch to pull it out of a bad situation, and also as an emergency services tool to aid in stabilizing a crashed vehicle and/or extricate the occupants. There are myriad other uses for this style of jack, once the operator understands and practices safe jack handling and basic situational awareness.

RS Hunter oh they suck and i avoid them at all costs.. but in sand, mud, ice/snow they can be the only solution.. once your axles are burried no winch is going to pull you free

This is BY FAR the best Hi-Lift "how to" video and info on the Internet.
Not even Hi-Lift's own video gives these proper use and safety details. In my many years of 4-wheeling, I've seen FAR too many people hurt because they didn't know the proper way to use or the high risks associated with improper Hi-Lift use.

Those are also called farm jacks for a reason. I have so many uses around my property: they can be used to jack tractor, shipping container, stumps.

Factory jack for the mid late 70s Nova was like that, except it had a tab that hooked into slots in the bumpers. Around 2000 when I was like 15 I had that situation where a bunch of us were driving around middle of the night and got a flat lol. I was the only one who knew even a little about cars so had to figure it out. Shit tipped over when I had it fully raised. Nobody died, but it was a sobering moment

Glad I found this; great video! A friend lent me his for an off-road trip I was doing in my 2017 Tacoma TRD and I thought I was a dummy because I couldn't find any way to use it. I'm so glad you pointed out that you need hard points to use this jack and I don't have sliders yet, so back it went.

nice video - one added usage case is super low probability, which is extrication, using the the hi-lift to spread open a door/window/something with it's jaws, and another jaw below the climbing mechanism. i've never had to use it that way, but it is a potential use
Good tutorial video of how to use the farm jack. I needed to know how to descend the jack as Ive forgotten. You included that very item in your video and showed how its done. So I can go and use my jack now, to raise up my fence panels. Cheers
I used a high lift jack with the high lift mate that hooks into the wheel spokes to raise a stock 2001 jeep Cherokee high enough to get logs under the tire, from there we were able to get the jeep unstuck and back to camp.
The jeep was stuck in a sand dune.
The lift mate definitely is very useful when lifting a stock vehicle.

Get an ez lift attachment, so you can lift from your wheels. Hi-Lift Jacks work great! I use mine all the time when I get stuck in deep snow.

I got one a long time ago for an Explorer with Stock bumpers thinking that it would be amazing. I rapidly realized the same thing that you pointed out, and then, years later, came here to see what I was missing. The thing that I have taken away is that it is a fairly useful tool, like a hammer, but as with a hammer, there are problems at which it excels and problems to which it is dangerous to even attempt a solution.
It’s a great tool to have to mount on your Jeep to make it look like you know how to use it and do some really serious mall crawling.

You must have points on your vehicle to use the high lift on. If you do, can be great to get out of mud. Consider a front and rear tow hitch. not that expensive.

Don't think I'll ever need one of these but guy left my shed he delivered up high on the ass end with a jack like this. I thought I'd learn a little about them before I went to remove it from my shed. Yeaaah, I think I'll wait for the guy to come back and set my shed down correctly. Thanks for the info. Awesome thank you! I have everything to pull my car out of a bog on my new property , I had the high lift jack but there are no points to lift from, I have the snatch and tree straps but no one to pull me, I have a tee near by so now I’m sorted!

Does this mean that those offroad bumpers and rock sliders are meant to be used as lift points? I see these jacks mounted to Jeeps all the time. I wonder how often they're used.

A 12 inches length of 2 inch PVC, with a cap on it, slid over the vertical rail of the jack, helps protect your head, fenders and such from being damaged.

There is a hole in the lift tab of the Jack for a Shackle just like the top end of the jack has . Use that for attaching a long sling etc when pulling a vehicle out of a hole ... One slip of the jack or some other weird movement will cause the sling eye to go slack and slip of that lift tab. Truck stuck in a very difficult spot ? Use a 2:1 pulley system with the Jack. Having a complete proper recovery kit is essential for any thing that may get thrown at you .
The bottom hole of the lifting tab you're talking about is not rated for much load.
I just looked quickly online to find a minimum breaking strength and couldn't find one...
But Hi-Lift specifically tells you to use the jack foot and not the hole for winching
Bought one for my Humvee but kinda a different situation having a rear bumper that you can literally hang the truck in the air by and soon will have side rails too. I always scratch my head when I see these things on wranglers with no rock rails or bumpers lol.
You can get a tire lift kit. Really amazing.
On my stock 2001 Silverado I jack from the tow hooks if I’m lifting from the front and in the back the hitch is built into the bumber which is then attached to the frame so I jack from there
I bought this to lift fence posts out of the ground but thought it would be useful for other things. Been like 6 years, still only use has been for posts.
I use that jack to fell good about myself. Like most neerda out there I almost never go off road, but G does is it not look good and flashy on top of the spare tyre 😊
You forgot to use it to pull fenceposts and tree stumps! ;)

Great video thanks, I do off-roading but not extreme, biggest obstacles I face are mud and sand in my region... I'm thinking traction boards and a come-along would probably be a better investment than one of these. 🙂

Also, thanks for the realistic review of the hi lift jack. I almost bought an off-brand model today, but my truck appears mostly stock and there's no solid mounting point. A pulley and ratchet system is gonna be much more effective and versatile for my current rig. You just saved me almost $100 (and 100#) and helped focus my extraction kit! 🙏
It won´t damage/dent the door at all. Cause u can open the door and swing it out of the danger-zone. That´s what doors are there for, to be easily movable obstacles is their exact function...
Only really useful for a flat tire in mud/snow where regular jack won't raise the corner high enough. But you have to have that wheel hooks adapter and high enough jack stand.

When the shortcomings of a tool exceed the advantages, those need to be made plain and clear. Exactly the case with a Hi Lift. I don’t hate them, but they’re only useful under a very specific set of circumstances

I've seen kits where you can use these with a chain and you don't have to keep reconnecting every four feet. I was wondering how those work I've seen some videos but I'm still not totally clear on it. I always wondered why not a come along. I don't know that I like the idea of standing that close to a cable under tension on a come along. Definitely not a Chinese one. I just saw a video where they were saying go click to click not all the way from top to bottom on the Range hi-lift jack.
