This is my video essay on one of the greatest games ever made! (and about the dark conspiracy behind the scenes...). Hope you enjoy! NEXT VIDEO will be maybe: FRONT MISSION 3, CHRONO CROSS, or something ELSE. Dunno yet. Might be a while tho. Sit tight.
Half way through and enjoying the video. At 1.11.30 there is some background mumbles happening. Is that a hidden back masked message or just uncut audio from your twitch stream of the fight with yardivitch?
Something I'd personally love to see in the future is a 10 million hour long retrospective on Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, I bet you'd nail it. That said, I love your narration style, keep up the amazing work
10 million hours long would be around 1.1k years, so a millenia and some change. yeah. i think i can do it. i got enough beer and coffee and rice. lol thanks a lot for the watch!
I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and made my way through the wonderful Final Fantasy Tactics video before moving on to this. I don't often comment, but I just had to say how much I enjoy your style, particularly your sense of humour and the quality of your voice work. Your content is going straight onto my list of videos to relax to. :) Thank you for putting out work of such excellent quality.
hey man, thanks so much for that comment and the good vibes in this holiday season. i'm a little under the weather ATM and video production has stalled a bit until I get better (a week or so), so I appreciate the watch and words! My guy FF6 and Super Mario RPG in one week? You're little mind must have been so blown. My uncle owned both (and many other bangers) so I played them over a long time. Them, FF4, and Chrono Trigger also spawned my love for menu based RPG combat. Have never finished Mario RPG but have the other 3 in due time. I should find a rom or something and give it another go.sub well earned
oh yeah, my brain didn't know how to comprehend the utter magnitude of what was happening -- but i'm glad it happened, because they are the two greatest RPGs ever made, and it set me along a path of RPG stardom. 4 and Trigger are also instant classics, and no matter what age, are ripe for consumption. thanks for watching my man!
Stoked YT showed me you channel! Keep em coming. This was a lot of fun. I had a friend in school who had this game and it was like discovering a weird secret artifact. It had Mario in it, but looked nothing like any Mario game I had heard or seen before. Even from my older family members, which made this game seem even more occult. The "friend" was a real doofus, hated reading, and thus hated this game. Or so he said. He traded it to me for some pokemon cards. And for about a month, I was blown away by this game. That was... until his mom called my mom demanding that we trade back. As a kid this was very heartbreaking and frustrating. But as an adult it all makes sense. The $60 game cart was worth way more than the $10-$12 worth of cardboard that the kid had received in trade. But as a kid, at that time N64 was already out everyone had moved on. Pokemon madness was in full swing. And for one Month, I was the king of the Mushroom Kingdom. The next time I saw this game was in a retro game store price tagged well over $100. Out of reach for me at the time. It wouldn't be until becoming adult that I would finally be able to complete and play this game. The entire experience feeling like a total fever dream.
back in the day where physical media was still important, trading or renting was still a viable and often normal way to procure games -- as you said and as i mentioned in the video, sometimes a buddy would have a game you could borrow or even play off the same save file! and like you, i was still playing with SNES even as the 64 released ( i would get a plyastation a couple years later), so super mario RPG was still very important in the videogame landscape. thanks for sharing your story, man!
I would love to do ff8 -- I'm still deciding what to do next tho (be it XENOGEARS, CHRONO CROSS, FF8, etc...). I have a deep love/hate relationship with FF8 -- it's one of my favorites and also one of my least favorites lol. it's complicated.
it was when i was streaming it and had my cam in the corner -- i didn't want my face to be in the majority of the video, that's why the black box is in the corner there
@@ratioretrospectives gotcha. too bad the gameplay couldn't be separated. in either case still a fun watch although the percussion in the background music constantly made me think my cats were clawing at furniture somewhere
So, I've gotta say, I enjoyed the retrospective, Super Mario RPG was my first SNES cartridge along with Super Mario, and it's the literal reason I learned how to read before Pre-K, bc my family got tired of reading it to me but I DID NOT WANT TO STOP PLAYING AT ANY COST, so I just sat there and sounded them out. Lol That being said, I just wanted to mention that I was listening to this video in my car on a long drive, and there is this light... microphone hiss, or something, that doesn't seem to be as prominent on my mobile phone / Bluetooth headphones as it is on larger speakers, and it was kinda driving me nuts! But, I stuck it out xD And glad I did. Loved the content, I'll be moving on to final fantasy tactics now. That one's another classic for me too.
yea, i needed to buy a new mic -- my other one died and I was using my older mic and it isn't so good (as you can tell). hopefully next video I'll have a better mic! (also, that's awesome that you listened to this on a long car ride haha that's what the video is for -- gaming, working, or other long stretches of time you have to burn!)
@@ratioretrospectives Actually I don't think your mic is that bad, the sound I'm hearing can be edited out pretty easily after you're done recording. Idk what audio editor you use but if you don't already know what I'm talking about, I'd be down to help out! I've basically caught up on all your videos and am already a fan 🙋♂️ And well, you nailed it bc those are basically all the times I listened to them. Also, my almost 2 year old, my GF and our dog were all in the car, so basically everyone either watched or heard it in some form 😂
One of my favorite games and your last video on secret of evermore was also great you did two of my favorite games in a row also that was the order I played them in the nineties keep up the good work. watched your three hour FF tactics video, and now this video. Look forward to more content from you. And maybe a possible Castlevania SoTN retrospective?
The Quartz Charm is hardly the most broken accessory in the game, but it is in the top 5. Its biggest drawback is that if you get hit by Shredder you lose the stat buff. The Safety Ring makes you immune to elemental magic and status ailments, the Attack Scarf is stupidly good (also you only need 30 jumps, not 100, you're thinking of the Super Suit), Troopa Pin has the attack boost and a giant speed boost, and the Safety Badge at least makes you immune to (most?) status ailments. I'd rate it 3rd best behind Safety Ring and Attack Scarf. I don't usually bother with Super Jumps so I usually just get the Troopa Pin and leave these three accessories on my party from that point onward.

Y'know, the whole Luigi conspiracy theory reminded me a lot of Super Paper Mario and how Luigi was the perfect host for the Chaos Heart. Wonder if that was intentional. In any case, great video, really hyped for the remake of SMRPG.

I may be in the minority here, but this was extremely hard to listen to after the first maybe 15 minutes.
