Also, NEXT VIDEO is going to be -- SUPER MARIO RPG....hopefully it will be in a month or two, and not 5 months lol
I think you mean Super Mario's RPG
Between Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore, Evermore resonated with me the most.
same. i mean, i loved mana, but the mood and tone of evermore just stuck with me longer.
Secret of Mana was my favorite game and still is but I still love Secret of Evermore. It's a very close second for me and back when I wanted another game like Mana but not Zelda, Evermore was PERFECT for that.
I still love the antique market and wish the next age would've been a bit longer but still, such a great game.
Same here. I played and finished Secret of mana, but I can't remember anything but the final boss because I couldn't attack it (I don't remember why) so my party members had to attack it and finish it and it took a while. In the other hand, I still remember most of evermore. And I want to replay it
Same. For me the story in evermore is much more creative and relatable, secret of Mana is "just" a normal magical adventure.
My Mother was the best mother you can have. She allowed me 1 new game every year, and after I played Secret of Mana I learned from a game magazine that Evermore will come out. I begged my mom to buy me that game. She did and I still have the original package and Walktrough book in my possession. I love you mom, rest in in power!
that's a good mom, right there. the yearly (usually christmas time for me) new game was one of the best moments as a kid! EGM or nintendo power were basically like a SEARS catalogue lol
Between Secret of Mana, and Secret of Evermore, SoE made several improvements over SoM:
1). Faster character movement. This makes the game feel much more fluid.
2). Limiting weapon powerups to twice, nobody wanted to stand for 60 seconds+ to charge a weapon to 8/8 in SoM only to hit for 999 damage anyway.
3). Allowing multihits on weapon charges, allowing you to break said 999 cap (though it did make swords absolutely bonkers OP).
4). Faster hit recovery. SoM allowed you to shrug off 90% of hits, but SoE lets you get back up quicker after you get hit.
5). The most expensive alchemy "spells" take, at most, 3 ingredients which means you will never have less than 33 casts of something once you leave town. Compare that to a max of 99MP and some spells taking 7MP to cast. Even with 4 walnuts, you are still limited pretty heavily.
6). While it's a bug, the infinite sprint is awesome. Sprinting in general just works better (though that was fixed in the SoM remake).
thank god for infinte sprint honestly. i tapped that button like a mad man!
Thanks for this! It feels like no one talks about Secret of Evermore.
agreed. but, at least i have contributed something to the discussion for youtube at least!
This was one of my favorites growing up. I think my favorite part was that it was extremely easy to break by leveling alchemy. The dog was even more broken than just it's damage since if you controlled it you could spam alchemy far faster than if you were the kid. You could get chains of 4-8 casts before they froze the enemy and blocked you casting while it calculated damage. So you could go to a boss with leveled alchemy and kill it in a few seconds before it even did anything. It also gave me so much stuff to grind with how many spells and weapons you could level which was great when you're a kid and get a handful of games a year. Plus all the different restrictions you could play with to challenge yourself, like the kid only run.
Yeah, I mention the Kid only challenge run -- and that is tough, to be sure -- but the brokenness is what is charming about this game. It's not immediately obvious (besides the dog I suppose), so you kinda feel cool for having discovered some wierd interaction with the systems. Like, if this game came out today, they'd patch it into oblivion, but sometimes, the wonkiness is what gives it so much charm, you know?
@@ratioretrospectives It would definitely get fixed now, but my favorite memories of the game were about breaking it. About grinding Crush to max level right when I got it and destroying bosses in seconds. About keeping a save where I accidentally triggered an unlimited ammo glitch for the bazooka and keeping that save for years because I didn't have the internet to learn how to trigger it again. About grinding the dog's attack at the start of the game and letting him just steamroll the game for me. The ability to break the game was so much fun back then, especially before the internet could teach you how to do it all. It felt like you discovered some neat little secret the developers left in the game, even if they didn't mean to (and back then you might never know if they intended it or not). It's also why Star Ocean: The Second Story was a favorite of mine. I also did try a fan patch for Evermore a few years ago that was supposed to help re-balance alchemy and enemy stats and stuff but it just felt so wrong to play I couldn't finish it.
star ocean 1 and 2 are some of the best JRPGs out there -- along with Lunar: Silver Star Story. The "breaking" of game mechanics is one of the prime reasons ARPGs are so beloved -- the prime reason why "getting away with" your build or combination of abilities feels so good: it's like sticking your hand in the cookie jar and eating one too. @@CryptoSporidian
i really liked what you said about high difficulty , "ima glutton for overcoming things" ive never heard my condition summed up so well, very insightful, also the "hitbox would embarrass mc escher" GENIUS, i like that haha
it's why i love souls games and souls likes and why I love grinding my face in the dirt lol
High difficulty...? I suppose if it's your first playthrough, SoE might seem difficult. But once you figure out its secrets, the game is actually hilariously easy if you know just what to do.
I'm so glad the youtube algorithm directed me to this channel. I just finished the FFT retrospective and going through this one. This channel is SO, so good. Please keep it up
thanks, man! appreciate the watch and words. also, my next video is going to be SUPER MARIO RPG, and should be done in a week or two. : )
Couldn't agree more! The FFT Retro had me in my feels! This dude is amazing!
This was one of my favorites. Amazing locations, music, atmosphere, humor, etc.
it's rarely lauded as much as mana, but I think it deserves it's own special place in the pantheon of great, cult RPGs
I didnt watch it yet but this game is childhood memories for me in the purest form.
I remember my mother told me to play this game only at a certain age.
And we had this Cheatbook from this game that told us everything we needed to know.
I still own the Rom an i pay it every now and then.
IT'S one of those kinda of games -- notstalgia in a cartridge.
Thank you for making this video! This game deserves so much more attention!
i agree! thanks for watching!
This game and its soundtracks will always stay in my mind.
This game is an underrated masterpiece and I enjoy it even after 26 years and probably 127 playtroughs.
it's got its foibles, no doubt, but it's so unique and singular -- in the art and music and aesthetic. not the best game in the world, but a cult classic for sure, and one of my personal favs (obviously).
When I played this game as kid, my dad was one those people who always bought the strategy guide with the game. Little me would use those guides to find all secrets while playing the game, but there was one thing I couldn’t find while playing this game.
The Sting spell.
All I remember is that the guide said it was in the desert and very hard to find. I spent HOURS looking for it and I just couldn’t find it. I played this game again as an adult later in life and I was able to get the spell thanks to the internet. When I finally got to use the spell, I learned a sad truth.
It sucked.
Just because something is hard to find, it doesn’t mean it will be strong or good.
"Just because something is hard to find, it doesn’t mean it will be strong or good." -- that's basically an aphorism of life, TBH lol. those are the kind of memories that spurn these videos and the angle for the philosophy -- in other words, those kinds / types of memories are what makes these retrospectives.
Bald 40 year old. Hard to get past the plural Secret. But you made it easy with such amazing writing and narrative. Thank you 😊
That desert brought back long buried ptsd I thought gone forever. Great video man. Thanks
I am sorry. Let us commiserate. 😅
Man the energizer spell was so good
Honestly, I never had any issues with Evermore's combat and level design. I just killed the flying skull enemies in the pyramid with magic. It's so easy to buy the ingredients for the crush formula. Buy as many ingredients as possible and you'll have 95 to 99 crushs to use. Easily enough to get you through the pyramid. And loads of fun casting onto 3 enemies at once to take them all out in one go.
but if you're doing a melee only run then...woof, those bats are super annoying
Then I do a lot of weapon charging. Usually use the spear. But the sword at full charge is also very effective.
When you get the Stonefist spell you can level this spell by killing the evil magicians right next to the cave. They drop a lot of money so the spell quickly pays for itself. Leveling this bad boy to level 8 makes the game pretty easy. It is one of the best spells in the game for that. It comes early, ingredients are easy to get, and has really good damage.
true, true. alchemy is kinda broken once you know how to exploit it, but so is buddy the dog lol. this game is full of exploitable, broken stuff -- and it's all the better for it.
to this day one of my favourite games. Still replay it once a year xD I bought it for xmas with the cash i got from my godfather. Good times
omg. would not have thought that calling the games "secrets of [...]" would trigger me so damn hard...
Thank you for testing my limits.
you'res welcomes, budds
I just found this channel and watched the FFT and Evermore videos, and they're great. Looking forward to seeing more of them.
thanks! i've also got a super mario RPG one, too~ next one i'm making is chrono cross!
Such a great game. I remember being surprised when I saw an animated commercial for it on TV, even (that was so incredibly rare back then). The music was also fantastic.
music is my favorite part, honestly. also, snes and playstation commercials in the 90s were things of gold, they were.
@@ratioretrospectives Secret of Evermore was what made me a fan of Jeremy Soule; it was neat seeing his career develop over the years despite this game not being that well-known. My first RPG as a kid was Secret of Mana, and I believe this was my second? Both games had great memorable music. I still love a lot of SNES tunes, there was so much creativity back then when they had to work around hardware limitations.
The comercial stars Paul Rudd
@@maddo-hq9jr Whaaaat?
@@Rietto yes, it was his first job
fantastic video. You did one of my favs justice
thanks, man! and thank you for watching
The way I would describe the music is evolutionary. It gives you a familiar tune, and then adds in a discordant tune that should act against it, but, rather, seems like a natural, futuristic, evolution of the original tune, changed over centuries or millennia, giving you the original score, played as it would be in the future, organically merging the past, present, and future to immerse the player.
the music is one of the most iconic elements of the game, for sure! the OST is brilliant.
Re: call beads, there's also a spot next to a fountain in Nobilia where you can pick up infinite call beads as long as you have fewer than 9.
by the dog statue, yeah? gotta love old school snes games haha
I played through Secret of Evermore way back when it came out. It was such a weird and charming twist on what I'd gotten from Secret of Mana. I remember liking Mana more because it was brighter and prettier, but also enjoying Evermore for its uniqueness. It's not well-known, so I'm happy to see such a thoughtful and thorough dive into it. Thank you! I'll be checking out your other vids next~
P.S. obligatory "it's Secret, not Secrets" ;D
I like Mana more, honestly, but Evermore stuck with me way more, if that makes sense. It occupies such a weird space in my head (especially the great music), so I just had to get my thoughts out about it. I appreciate your words and time! Thanks for watching.
P.S. I know it's secret, but my brain doesn't know that, so I blame him. That dude sucks sometimes. ;D
Same, except it was my first proper ARPG after Ultima 8 (PC) I think. But I did pick it in the store based on it looking kinda like Zelda and SoM (which I had seen in a magazine), and on the cool box art.
I find the base gameplay more polished than in SoM, and the dungeons a bit more interesting. No MP is a fair point against it but the boy and dog dynamic makes it work better as a SP experience, having tried the 2-player hack.
never underestimate some good box art. movie theaters and movie posters knew this for decades.@@Alianger
This game took up so much of my imagination as a kid. Couldn't get very far at all, but I just loved the world
same! it was a curious game to say the least.
You were right about the memory of a memory example, played this game for 20 minutes as a child. Thank you for your review insightful as always.
no problemo. thanks for watching!
Wow, thanks for the deep dive on an old favorite of mine. Funny jokes, solid research, and it's nice to see the UA-cam algorithm recommending some little channels! Looking forward to watching you grow. Subscribed.
i've been noticing youtube offering up smaller channels to me too...i feel like that's a good thing! thanks for the watch and words
Omg you're story about the maxed out save file just blew my mind. I kept seeing maxed out save files in games I rented and just assumed some animal out there was spending 50000 hours on ff4 or whatever. Game genie never crossed my mind
game genie / game shark was usually the way it happened, but every once in awhile there was an ethical save file where someone actually did indeed grind out the levels and whatnot. it was a different time, man, as you know haha
An immensely enjoyable watch. Thank you very mich!
you're welcome! thanks for watching!
@@ratioretrospectives I just thought about the video again on my way home from work. The "36 year old kid" lines made me, a 37 year old kid, chuckle again today. Thanks once more, I like your style
i feel i'll never NOT feel like that... lol@@Vas1
Aww man, you didn't include Ebon Tower in the music section. Cecil's Town. It's literally the best track in the game.
God I love this game.
it's a good one, for sure. that jeremy soule guy is pretty good, i think. lol
YESS. I found another retrospective channel 😭🎉🎉
there're dozens of us! dozens!
Secret of Evermore OST added to my gaming playlist, thanks for the watch!
if this video could do that for you, then that's a big plus in my book! it's a great OST for sure
I enjoyed playing SoE. I thought I was definitely a different take to action RPGs like SoM. At some point I hope you do a retrospective on the SNES G.O.A.T Chrono Trigger.
i would love to do chrono trigger, but i may do cross first. cross, while not as "great" as trigger, to me is somehow more impactful. it's a weird take not many people share, i know, but cross is so odd and satisfying in a totally non crono trigger way, if that makes sense. maybe i should do both at the same time, in the same video? hmmm...
i remember playing this as a kid but i don't remember how it ended, need to watch this video.
it's a very saturday morning cartoon kinda vibe lol

"Let me tell you about this overlooked game that deserves so much respect for how much went into it, and how much I loathe every aspect of the actual gameplay like a pickle juice-infused pear of anguish tearing my tight-as-a-snare-drum sphincter asunder."
y'aright, dude?
Very well made, good job
thanks a lot man!
LOL those call in walkthroughs I sadly admit that I did that for FF8 once.
i did it for Wild Arms 2 lol. we've all been there, my friend.
Whatever it takes to have fun. It's a game. It's not that serious. If someone needs a strategy guide/walkthrough to get by and enjoy themselves, so be it. Again, it's just a game.
Once these flying skulls were annoying as heck to me, but since I got a emulator I have figured out their hitbox, for when to strike with a melee weapon, which is a matter of timing.
Also they are extremely squishy against offensive alchemy formulas (they have a negative magic defense value), except for the blue-greyish variant created by the dog statue's true form.
They net you 300 XP and 40 units of the land's currency with a pale 40 HP. And the upgrade in Gothica net you 400 XP and 50 gold despite having 90 HP.
They are one of the worthwhile enemies to grind for leveling up.
"They are one of the worthwhile enemies to grind for leveling up."
while this may be true, and a good tip for those who wanna grind, i still harbor an aggressive hatred for those little bastards, and will do so till the day i die. i have nightmares of those things lol
@@ratioretrospectives The flying dragons are disappointing though. They use the same behaviour and hitbox, are way tougher and even have less rewards.
My favorite SNES game.
it's one of my personal favs too!
This game.. I was the most hyped ive EVER been, secret of mana being my fav game of all time. THen, the bigest letdown of all time. Music wasnt as good, game was too dark, none of the bloomy colors, i dont remember the story or lore at all (but that might be my fault)only 2 characters, the dog just wasnt good enough and didnt look good, didnt live up to even Earthbound. the crafting was good and the combat was ok but, boy of all the letdown sequels, this one takes the cake. There was another one like this too that was still good just not as good as SOM, legend of mana. Beat both SEO and LoM, but not more than once.
Ive one more thing to say, this game led me to romming SEiken densetsu 3, without the failure of this game id not known of seiken densetsu 3. i went looking in the past for something better
i must push back on the music bit -- i love the music in SoE. it's very good and some of my personal favorite. 💪
Now THIS was a classic that just doesnt feel right on an emulator.
there are ways to emulate the experience of old (like adding post-processing CRT curve and whatnot) on a modern emulator, so, honestly, as long as people can play, that's the main goal!
@@ratioretrospectives facts, it's the controls for me. They feel funky compared to the snes gamepad i used to play on
I never got the point of attacking thrax’s arms, pushing heart was always just so much easier. I guess I was always just too underleveled going in
laughed my ass off! great vid and def subbed mate!
thanks, man!
Both "Secret of..." games have really great music.
I vastly preferred Evermore over Mana, but I know I am in the minority.
there are dozens of us! dozens!
Never played SoE, but man you did an awesome job on this video.
thanks man! i appreciate the watch.
Your commentary is great but the way you recorded these clips is crazy
it's either warp speed or a trillion cuts. i went full star trek
I loved the soundtrack of this game some of the best atmospheric music out there.
absolutely -- it's why I talked about it so much! Also, even the devs agree with that sentiment. Soundtrack is superb and one of a kind.
@@ratioretrospectives I wrote the coment early on then I heard your section and I agree with your sentiment whole heartedly.
the ost is fantastic! @@KingofGeo
Both Mana and Evermore only have one secret each, not multiple. Each one just has a single secret.
take a shot everytime this dude says b-movie
13 shots. make it bottom shelf to help the wallet
I still have this game and love it. Dont think i ever beat it though. Most bosses i could beat fine, prolly because i overlevelled alchemy. Except, the damn rock phase of the end boss. That fucker healed or something, i could just never beat it. Maybe because i was playing on the PAL version.
Great video, i really enjoyed it!
This game had so much potential, the second part of it just felt unfinished. Don't get me wrong, i adore Secret of Evermore, but i feel it could have been so much more.
thanks man! glad you liked it. and yeah, a lot of SoE is kinda wonky, but it's that b-level charm that makes it so memorable i think. it's not perfect -- by a long shot -- but nonetheless stays with you through the years
@@ratioretrospectives a Secret of Evermore 2 would be dope, though! Or a full blown 3d remake with all the content , they couldn't add because of memory limitation.
I can't wait for next video you're working on.
@@torgeist. thanks! I'm working on SUPER MARIO RPG next -- and so far it's going well (about halfway through it)
For the flying skulls in the pyramid I suggest a combo of the speed spell, avoiding most of them, and throwing the spear if you have to fight one
Another combat tip - some defensive spells and items will actually protect you from enemy spells if timed right, so you can use this to your advantage to cut back on some grinding.
yes, the spear is king there. but i had to use the sword (because it's what i did as a kid) and therefore had a very tough time.
Uploaded nine days ago, when I was searching for a retrospective for that game in...quite some time actually, I haven't thought of it in years, so that's timing.
Watching this I was wondering, was Romero a fan of this game? He cited A Link to the Past as an inspiration, but Daikatana also was about time traveling with companions and at first you visit a swamp, then ancient Greece, then medieval times and then a futuristic laboratory, futuristic for us at least, not the protagonist. I know it's not quite time travel in Evermore but c'mon, I think Romero confused the inspiration here or cited Zelda because people know about that...
hmm. you might be on to something. Evermore is often forgotten but I think is really influential -- in an almost secretive way. people forget that they played it...or rented it...but it still haunts their memories all the same...weirdly enough, even Jeremy Soule kinda downplays it, even tho his music is some of the best parts of Evermore.
Man this game never makes the top ten on anyone list but this was a good SNES had to much great games
I hope you do EarthBound eventually, that's one I never rented as a kid and only played on an emulator in college years later.
i should do earthbound (it's one of the best RPGs ever made, after all) but I didn't paly it as a kid either, only much later in life. so it would be more of a playthrough than a retrospective, but you know, whatever, semantics. : )
Yeah, Earthbounds sure was a classic.
I got a different experience of the game because I finished it with level 99 for my character (It also why I hate the ending of Earthbound, and why the ending ruined the game for me, but this is a story for another time). Also remember making my own maps because the mazes are not that easy indeed... But when you are doing a lot of grinding, mazes are not an issue.
Good retrospective, well done (I do pray those pics weren’t actually of you)
thanks. and no, those were just from google. my real 90s kid pics are far, far more embarrassing.
I only wait for the moment AI works that automatically, so i can request my own remake if this game
honestly, it may be viable to do that one day -- at least for these old 2D games anyway
I don't get why you keep calling the game "Secrets of Evermore" - it's "Secret..." :D Amazing video though!
it's what i called it as a kid back in the 90s. it's only fair i use the same syntax nowadays lol thanks!
you talk about how much more buddy does with his charge attacks, charge your damn attacks
seriously, i just watched to fight mungola and you're doing 53 with your axe but if you charged it to level 3 or 4 you'd be trucking it for 600s+ just like buddy
yeah, that guy sucks
You silly goose. The game's title is "Secrete of Evermore"!
The gameplay gets black bars over the sides at 52:30 and they stay there for the rest of the run.
I am aware. It was an issue with the original video -- wont happen next time.
I only wait for the moment AI works that automatically, so i can request my own remake of this game
if this game got a remake it would've been developed by bethesda using 2d hd style like octopath traveler with voice actors from elder scrolls
i wouldn't say no to a remake, to be honest...
Why do you not charge the attacks?
The thirty to fourty year old balding audience.... lol yep we remember secret of mana
In the before times, when we played games with sticks and changed channels by throwing rocks at our tv!
game itself was good and i liked it BUUUUUUUTTTTT Alchemie sucked duo need of ingredients and the farming for it and also some lvls where total labyrinths.
ah but the alchemy was the most interesting part -- scarcity sometimes makes it better
Why do you sound like youre aping Grim beard?
dunno what that is
There isnt an s on the word Secret... its not plural...
This game is great because its bad the right way.
Why the fuck do you keep calling it "Secrets of Evermore"?? It's SECRET.
Very strange.
is tries hards to nots talks likes thats. but its stills happens. sorrys
