Dec. 9: Hunting in the Wind | Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke

  • On the second day of our trip to Nebraska we spent the morning in a cedar thicket hoping for late rut movement. We had some action. But as the day progressed, the wind picked up until it was blowing 25 to 30 mph. While the duck hunters on the nearby Platte River loved it, the wind caused us some concern. Do we hunt the open edges near the crop fields hoping the deer would still move to feed, or should we stick closer to the cover expecting the deer to hold tight?

      You can tell that he has a fire within when he talked in earlier videos about wanting his own farm. He seems like a fine young man.

    Looks dangerous not wearing safety harnesses in the wind.

      We were about 10 feet up. It was a bad tree that leaned the wrong way so I couldn't stand on the platform. I had to have one foot on the platform and one foot on the crotch of a nearby tree. Sometimes when you go in blind, you sometimes end up with some "dud" setups.

    It may not be shooting bucks in a barnyard, but at least it is honest hunting video. Sometimes, you indeed see nothing you can shoot. Sometimes, maybe too many sometimes, you see nothing. Confessions of a public land, part-time bow hunter....

    • @bill-winke

      That is so true Karl. Most hunts (the vast majority) aren't successful, but those unsuccessful hunts are the ones that make the successful ones all the sweeter. Have a great day and thanks for the comment.

    Bill how many trees do you think you have hunted out of!

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  7 місяців тому +1

      Oh, boy. That is a good question. I am guessing more than 1,000 for sure. 45 years! That's only a bit more than 20 per year. I am sure it has been more than that. When I was younger I would hunt 60 to 70 straight days. One year I hunted 75 straight days! That will add up to a lot of trees since I didn't have any blinds back then.

  • @JimRyser
    @JimRyser 7 місяців тому +1

    I have a love hate relationship with those short trees. I’ve been way up (which I don’t like) and hunted off the ground - short trees always seem to get me busted!

    Personally been in the same circumstances myself
    Hunted new public land 1st time this year also did could only scout by sat pics no boots on the ground pre scouting did a walk in cold hang and hunt
    I looked for fresh buck sign in the form of huge chest high rubs I knew were made in the last 48-72 hrs on a heavily used deer trails that I found fresh tracks I knew could only be made by a heavy bodied big buck fallowed that deers tracks until I recognized a dedicated bedding area under 200 yards away pressed on as dead quite as I could till I got as close as I dared and set up
    Did it twice in two different areas
    Both times got glimpses of shooter bucks but I was just out of position enough I had no shot
    My problem was same as yours
    To many trails nothing that funneled their movements that I felt confident they would be walking in before dark
    But now I did confirm two dedicated buck bedding areas and thier paths of travel and where I need to be and by what time
    Best of luck to you
    I knowvall to well hunting thick cover with no significant funnels is tough
    Doing it with no 1st hand inperson pre scouting is very tough

    Bill. When you plant corn along roadside that you mentioned. How many years can you do that in a row?? Does it beat up the soil??

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  7 місяців тому

      John, you can do it every year, but you do have to put in the fertilizer every year. The first year you can kind of get by with less inputs, but every year after that you have to hit the fertilizer hard. I know farmers here who plant corn on the same fields every year for decades. The modern hybrids seem tuned to that kind of cropping method. Good luck.

    Tight quarters where your stand is, be right on top of you before you know they’re there? Sounds windy!

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  7 місяців тому

      Yes, it is tough conditions for filming especially. They are through the shooting/filming lanes in a flash. We are used to being able to see them and getting "B" roll first to show the deer. In those spots, that was impossible.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  7 місяців тому

      You can't be too careful. If you bowhunt for long it is not a matter of "if" you will fall, but when and how badly you will be hurt. I know many people who have fallen and were crippled (or worse). I have fallen three times, the farthest was about 10 to 12 feet, but I landed on my feet. Sprained an ankle, but could have been way worse. Now I never leave the ground without a lineman's belt or safe line. Good luck.

      gotta love when non-hunters tell 40 year + hunters what they are doing wrong. 🤣

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  7 місяців тому

      You can talk, you just have to keep it down. Deer can't hear as well as you think, especially when it is breezy. Think about how many times you have blown a grunt call at a buck just 100 yards away and he didn't react. He didn't react because he didn't hear it. Now think how much louder that grunt call is than a low talking voice.
