  • Managing your timber stand is one of the most important parts of wildlife habitat management and can improve the value of your property long term. At our farm we wanted to do a better job of holding deer throughout the hunting season as bedding and undergrowth was limited by the light coming through the mature canopy above. We worked closely with our State DNR, County Forester, and Logger to develop a plan that would do primarily four things; Improve access routes, increase whitetail bedding in localized areas, accelerate the growth of our mast producers/crop trees, and make some money in the process.

you *_MIGHT_* even want to harvest the stumps. *Look Up Burl Harvesting*
_THAT WOOD_ can be a premium wood, so if you've got burl's that you are just _Throwing Away_ at the VERY LEAST, some guys who harvest burl--woods for a living May wanna come and git those stumps you've got there. *OR Possibly* you might even harvest / sell them yourselves, once you see how much (per pound) you can get. _IF Any are worth pulling out_ but...... *I'd say check into BURL WOOD* before closing this chapter.

In your opinion the grade of slope that deer will use for bedding vs. a general grade that they will naturally avoid

We have seen them do both, using lower thick areas for bedding is pretty natural anywhere. However in cases like ours where we are doing tsi along mature hardwood bottoms and ridges, it really can be anywhere that the deer feel comfortable, have a good vantage point, escape route, and remain generally undisturbed. We try to shift those areas closer to our stand locations, be conscience of access and wind directions.
