Dec. 8: First Day in Nebraska - Flatland Whitetails | Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke

  • I have three days to hunt Nebraska and the first day (Friday) was an interesting reminder of the differences between hunting the bluff country that typifies my farm in Iowa versus the flatlands of the Great Plains. We are hunting a good property with a lot of deer. The goal is to spend mornings and evenings looking for ways to combine feeding patterns with the hope of late rut movement. Here's how we approached day one - and what we learned.

    I was glad to see you talk about the swirling winds. I encounter that where I hunt. Bedding areas are mostly pine thickets. When the wind hits them it goes every which way. Throw in some hills and it’s a guessing game at best. All this “just hunt the wind” stuff doesn’t work so great in my hunting spots. I could sit on field edges and get a decent wind but would never see any deer 😂

    What a blessing to have a great water source, especially as dry as it has been. Bet those first two deer where bedded close enough to hear that pretzel bag. Love the hats.

      Yes, I think it was the smell of the pretzels that brought them our way in the first place! Have a great day.

      It is sure tough to tell where they are going to move on the flat ground when the cover all looks pretty much the same. Good luck.

    I'm really looking forward to seeing what monster buck you bring out of Nebraska! Great networking getting a hunt in with the Code of Silence crew. I hunt NW Indiana so, I'm no stranger to flat land hunting. Both the bluff country and flat lands have their own challenges I'm sure. Good luck out there! Hunt safe and God bless!

    Really enjoy seeing you out of state and looking forward to watching your approach on this. How many years has it been since you’ve travel hunted? Also a ziplock bag will do wonders instead of those noisy dotz bags 😅 good luck out there!

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  9 місяців тому +1

      Javin, it was 2008. I stopped traveling when I started Midwest Whitetail and the kids go very active in extra-curricular events. Will be fun to start getting out again. Almost forgot how to travel with my bow. Agree on the Ziploc, but we will take the risk of spooking a few deer to get a handful of Dots. Risk vs reward! Have a great day.

    Hi bill, just wondering if you ever choose to hunt with a crossbow or gun? If not, could you explain your reasoning? There's so many different weapons and seasons to choose it's hard to know what to do. I've had run ins with hunters very passionate about using primitive traditional archery only as well as hunters who use guns exclusively. I would be curious about your insights? Take care and God bless.

    I have no doubt if you didn't have to have a camera man along your success on big bucks would unquestionably go up significantly
    Especially if circumstances allowed you to set up with 100 yards of buck bedding
    One guy very well practiced being very careful can set up in a tree quietly enough to set up 100-125 yards from a bedded mature buck but two guys one with camera equipment is IMO much more difficult and I feel two guys in a tree are much much more likely to get busted than just one
    Again just my opinion

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  9 місяців тому +1

      Arthur you are so right. I didn't realize how much easier it is without a camera man until I took the two years off (2020 and 2021). I had been filming all my hunts for the 15 years prior.

  • @yourmomma2995

    honestly its good you didn't get a shot since the only option you would have had is a frontal shot and we all know deer can and do move fast when they hear the bow. if the deer moves just a few inches in any direction you have a wounded deer that you will never find. frontal shots are a very low percentage shot that i would never try again.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  9 місяців тому +2

      Actually, the deer that came out did mill around on the other side and I do think with some luck any buck that came out would have done the same thing. If you watch it carefully, you will see that I actually say that. Thanks for the comment.

    Getting a big buck on camera frequently right at dark or right before daylight in doe bedding area. How can I take advantage of this?

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  9 місяців тому +2

      Man, that is a tough one. I guess I would try to set up near that area. He might be coming to the camera location first before he mills around and then beds nearby. I would find a spot that you can sneak into and out of with a good wind advantage while on stand and give it a try. Good luck.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  9 місяців тому

      Ev doesn't want me to shoot any does here (which breaks my heart) so we are targeting bucks. He is good with whatever we choose to shoot, but we will hold out for something mature.
