  • Scaramouche, the sixth of 11 Fatui Harbingers has had an amazing growth arc since Genshin revealed him in version 1.1. In this video I show how Hoyoverse somehow managed to make us NEED his redemption. A task which following Inazuma's questline many of us wouldn't have imagined was possible.

I didn't feel too strongly abt Scara, he was just a villain that would crop up occasionally, but that SCENE changed everything. when he started to fall I yelled "CATCH HIM!!" it was clear he'd given up on his life and I knew he could change

I didn't scream. But I knew my mind and emotions were crying out for the Traveler to catch him. That, and Inversion of Genesis had bothered me so much, and it still affects me given how I still feel chills at his defeat scene. Scaramouche as a character had helped me realize that I am not the cold, and insensitive person that I thought I was.
Through Scaramouche's story, I've felt empathy for the first time since forever. He proved to me that I was no psychopath, not even the slightest.

also I'm pretty sure he's the first big character to show heavy signs of being suicidal and very mentally ill in a obvious way. the way some people call his character dramatic does make me wonder how they would react if someone close to them had a similar experience.

ngl, scaramouche's story reflects my personal experience on a deep level. It was extremely surprising to see a character that describes my life experience & struggles with mental health so accurately. Everytime, I understood his pain and why he acts the way he does. It's kind of funny because at some point, a friend of mine joked if I have God-complex and that made me reflect.
It is quite hurtful when people say "oh he's just edgy/babygirl" and make it as his entire personality. Like no, you can joke about it sure, but not the point of mischaracterization. But then again, it just goes to show why people who relate to scara acts the way we do and why he acts the way he does. How can we survive if we dont mask ourselves? even if it seems abnormal? like what are we supposed to do with the pain if no one else gets it? I have never felt seen and that exposed. Never expected it to come from a video game. Fortunately I dont do the atrocities that scara does, but the sense of aggression...is something some people with mental health struggles with. I, myself deal with depression & suicidal thoughts a lot. It's not something I can share either.
When he becomes wanderer, funnily enough its also something I relate and it makes sense. We can learn to change but doesnt mean we'll change our personality 180 and within a day. Our past shapes us for the rest of our lives. The past happened and theres nothing we can do to change it.

It's crazy how Scara went from a character that I feel "meh" towards to a character that I absolutely love. I think he's very well written. Also, I think the 3.3 Interlude quest wasn't a redemption arc, it was the BEGINNING of Scara's redemption arc. He decided he wants to atone for his wrongdoings, he's made the intention...but the action still hasn't been fulfilled. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him

  • @Loki-rb3ns
    @Loki-rb3ns Рік тому +298

As I see it, Scaramouche hasn't been redeemed YET. The 3.3 archon quest was just the start of his redemption arc.
The moment where a character decides to atone for their actions and the moment where they can be considered redeemed are two different instances.
He recognizes what he did was wrong and is taking responsibility for his actions, but that doesn't mean he's been redeemed.
He needs to earn his redemption. He has to actually make it right to the people he hurt to be considered redeemed, which is where I think Hoyoverse wants to go with his character because of his line of 'telling the ones who suffered because of the Raiden Gokaden fiasco the truth' and all the times they've been teasing a Scaramouche vs Kazuha confrontation.

Irminsoul can't change the past nor the timeline, it can only change data, or in other words, memories and records. We are still in the same timeline as when we started the game.
We know this is true because of the vase at the end of the quest.
Paimon broke it because she got scared of what Scaramouche was trying to do, but after he deleted himself from Irminsoul the vase was still broken, Paimon just didn't remember WHY she broke it since Scaramouche "doesn't exist" for the people of Teyvat anymore.

@@amari7782 Yeah, a lot of the chunky lore stuff is still in lore descriptions, even when discluding the Husk set, lol.
The future setup is how fate works and how much Archons know about it. When are artifact domains created? If they're created in the past, does that mean Wanderer's fate was predetermined? How did Raiden know about Wanderer's fate and how much? Why couldn't she "bring herself to interfere" with it? We know that artifact domains are at least known to someone like Kaeya, because he makes a reference to the Maiden's Beloved domain. These questions spawned from Raiden and Wanderer's voicelines and Kaeya's character quest.
The progression is with Istaroth(?). Weinelesefest gets a purpose, as with Wanderer's character bio, a re-telling of the events in Inversion of Genesis, we get a new sensory description of smell. Similar to Razor smelling the bottle letting Venti grant him a memory of his parents, Wanderer 'hears the winds voice' and smells 'nostalgic scents'. This caused me to look back at the cutscenes to see if this was anywhere remotely alluded to, and the same red-blue glitchy effect appears when we meet the mysterious voice happens when Wanderer's head is splitting from receiving his memories. Bruh.

The thing that I appreciate the most about how Scaramouche's shift into Wanderer was written is the way Wanderer allocated the blame for his actions as the Balladeer. His anger at Dottore for manipulating him is valid, but he also accepts his own responsibility in responding to his grief and anger by lashing out at the world and hurting others the way he perceived to have been hurt. Dottore put the knife in Scaramouche's hands and gave him a fake motive, but it was still ultimately Scara's decision to stab, and the fact that Wanderer acknowledges that is some of the most beautifully nuanced writing I've seen in a video game. It's both of their faults, and Wanderer understands that.
    TW: Suicide mention
And so many people completely missed the point of Scara erasing himself from Irminsul. They think he was trying to run from responsibility, but that's just not true. Scaramouche didn't want a reality where his atrocities were shoved onto other people; he wanted a reality where his atrocities never happened in the first place. His erasure from Irminsul was literally an allegory for attempted suicide. Typically when someone in the real world attempts to take their own life, they believe they're easing some imagined burden that they've brought upon the world by simply existing in it. That's what Scaramouche was trying to do, taken to its most ltieral extreme.

I think he has the desire to redeem himself, but he is not quite there yet and is gonna require a lot of guidance and maybe even closure on some things, though I am wondering how they‘re gonna do this considering that neither Ei nor Miko nor anyone seems to remember him anymore. Redemption would be actually owning up to the things he has done, and facing the consequences as was the point Nahida made if I remember correctly.

I mentioned this before and I'll say it again. A misunderstanding that many have about redemptiom arcs is not about turning into a "good guy" or joining the heroes. It's not about asking for forgiveness or wanting to make amends. Is when the individual has shoking realization about their own sins, and their own actions have caused nothing misfortune to their life. The turning point starts when that person has chosen to abandon said negative path or ideal, and decided to turn into a new leaf, which that doesn't equal turning into a good person.
When Scaramouche realized that he has been tricked by Dottore all those years ago, he had an epiphany about his crimes against the Raiden Gokaden and has been blaming the wrong subject. And he believed that the only way to fix is through the use of Irminsul - erasing his own existence and changed history for a better outcome. However, even during his memoryless state, he didn't find any sense of closure that he wanted, but only emptiness. And even after recovering his whole self, is willing to suffer the consequences of his trangressions by quote "stabbed their blades into chest."
That's why being him being an Anemo user works. He has achieved detachment from all earthly tether and not longer attached to mortal bonds. And now, he is like the wind, forever wanderer without any clear direction, a mere breeze brushing someone's shoulder and a figure that quickly dissppears among the crowd.

The big problem is that by erasing himself he kinda also defeated his own point given that all the events still happen but now the few people who knew of his involvement most of which are dead anyway now don’t know why they’re in this situation
It doesn’t help that kazuha ayato and ayaka the 3 most effected by his actions still go their whole lives not knowing that the person who caused their clan’s downfalls is out and about.
Overall it’s a redemption story that hardly feels that impactful in the grand scheme of things since it really doesn’t solve any problems for anyone.
At least with Ei second story quests after the events she changes her perspective and plans to walk with her people and while she’s not bringing the dead back yo life her actions can make the sacrifices not in vain while scaramouche redemption arc solves no one’s problems and changes nothing

But just the " a misunderstanding that many have about redemptiom arcs is not about turning into a "good guy" or joining the heroes. It's not about asking for forgiveness or wanting to make amends. Is when the individual has shoking realization about their own sins, and their own actions have caused nothing misfortune to their life. The turning point starts when that person has chosen to abandon said negative path or ideal, and decided to turn into a new leaf, which that doesn't equal turning into a good person."

Excellent video! All the praise needs to go to Patrick Pedraza, in his interview with Zach and Lori Megistus, he goes into how in that moment he had truly be the character and understand the pain that this character has been through. And it shows in his delivery, going from Haughty False God, to returning back to the scared lost child all those years ago. I cried watching this scene, because despite having just fought his 2 sage boss fight, this moment right here reminds that he was a victim of fate and the horrible circumstances around him. And it feels earned, despite the 180 of his character trajectory, the ending of his arc doesn’t feel like a justification for the horrible things he did, but closure to nightmare and hell he’s been through, while offering him the chance of redemption. I hope Hoyo continues his story further, since despite his main arc being done, there’s still a lot of loose ends I would like to see touched upon, such as his new relationship with the Raiden Shogun, his revenge against Dottore and even maybe a sequel to the Unreconciled Stars event

Great video!! I agree with you. Personally I wouldn't say he got redeemed in the Interlude Archon quest, but rather it was only the beginning of his redemption arc.
He wants us to tell the truth about the Raiden Gokaden. He acknowledges his wrongdoings and won't run away from the consequences. He's taking responsibility for his actions. He definitely changed, but not redeemed. Will alone is not enough to redeem a person. It's the start of something, but not where it ends. He needs to seek those he hurt and make it right for them. He has to earn his redemption.
I can't wait to see more of him in the future. The things to look forward to are quite exciting. I especially need that Kazuha and Scaramouche confrontation, all that teasing better mean something HoYo.

Scaramouche's storyline hit me harder than I ever expected it to.
I had a period in my life where I, too, gave up on myself. I empathize with Scara's story so heavily for that reason- I hated myself for who I was and regretted everything in the past because I realized what I was doing wasn't right and I'd hurt people. I would've given anything back then to change the past and erase myself. I'm no longer in that dark place, but Scaramouche's arc still hit very close to home. Maybe even a little too close.
I think that's why I'll never understand people who just hate him despite knowing what he's been through.
Have they ever seen someone fall so far from hope like Scaramouche did? Have they ever experienced that pain of losing the will to live?
Those that haven't need to consider how they're treating Scaramouche as a character, because _there are real people who have experienced what he did that did not survive._

As someone who has also moved on from trauma, there’s no apologies we would ever accept, and our best course of action is to just accept the past, move on, and never look back. And that is what scara has done. His story is already complete and to return for answers would mean returning to the past, and that’s pointless.

If you told me 2 years ago that Scaramouche would become my second favorite character in the game I'd think you're capping.
I never got to play the unreconciled stars event since I started playing in late 1.2 but even after watching recordings I couldn't understand why people liked him as much as they did. Really only saw him as a neat reference to that one part in Bohemian Rhapsody. After Inazuma came out and more of his lore dropped, while definitely intrigued, I was still extremely iffy about him, he was a villain after all. It wasn't until his connection with Kazuha was revealed that my views on him really started to change. Based on what had been shown at the time, that moment of hesitation seemed so out of character and it made me crave to see where Hoyo would take his story next. And they sure delivered!
Sumeru made me love him pretty much immediately. It's honestly amazing how much thought and care went into Scara's backstory and characterization. Definitely can't wait to see where his development goes next after the interlude chapter.
P.S. Now that he's more fleshed out than before I've noticed he's not only just a Bohemian Rhapsody reference, but a Queen reference in general since most of their songs match him perfectly lol

The first thing is Scaramouche tells Lumine her brother lived with the Jester in Kan’riah when the Jester was a royal Madge. I believe this was before the Jester became Fatuii. The other thing is Scaramouche tells Lumine is that he knows her from before. I believe he meant her the first time she traveled with Dainslief. Dainslief is the Boughkeeper and I believe he messed with Lumine’s head and her memories. After she sent Dain packing, she meant kunikusinski. This would have been before Kuni became a Fatuii and after the little boy died. There is so much more to the Wanderer’s story. He is definitely connected to Lumine. When they went into Irmasol, he was flirting with her calling attention to her “pretty eyes”! Barely to halfway through the story and at least 4 more countries to get to, so there will be much more from the Wanderer!

To be fair, a great many villains begin with a wounded child complex. I can't honestly say I felt anything when Scaramouche begged to retain the Gnosis, by that point it was very much a you reap what you sow moment in my book. As far as the new persona Scaramouche became as he very much ended his previous existence of his own free will, time will tell but he's got a clean slate in my opinion. The only critical fact that remains is that his existence was an engineered failure by Ei whom of all the Archons I feel has not yet truly redeemed herself for any of her actions. In a sense, I entirely put the blame on her for abandoning Scara in the first place. Just as I blame Ei for the deaths of so many with the civil war between her shogunate and Watatsumi island. Who even knows how many died at sea due to the storms that once surrounded Inazuma. The near starvation that fell upon the people for lack of trade, the madness that fell upon those who lost their vision and how her own kingdom was nearly usurped by a shadow government that had the single goal of using people as test subjects for delusions.
The only thing that has changed is that she has literally only stopped doing these things and started going out on occasion to touch grass. It is the people of Inazuma that have bounced back on their own from no longer being so oppressed, although the ruins on several major islands remain still as scars of the lives and homes lost due to Ei's failure to protect her people.
If I remember correctly Zhongli once commented on the God of Salt being a failure of a God for very similar reasons. Had it not been for the Traveler refusing to finish her with finality the same way Ei removed Signora from her mortal coil it easily could have been Yae Miko as the new Archon of Inazuma. In many ways perhaps this might have been more fitting aside from the fact that it was only through Yae's meddling that the Traveler even stood a chance against Ei and it was Yae's choice to offer an alternative.
If Yae had wanted to be the next Archon she could have easily gained the position the same way Nahida reclaimed hers via the Traveler. It was a very fine line imo.
So now in present times, what exactly is Ei doing as Inazuma's Archon? And is there any chance we will ever see her atone for her sins or was her redemption merely her admitting maybe she was wrong and to just stop being the reason for Inazuma's suffering?

    • @forresttheanimezilla3763
      @forresttheanimezilla3763 Рік тому +3

You really neeed to Pay more attention to the Inazuma arc.
After the completion of the archon quest where you fight Ei for the 2nd time on the Eutamia plane, chronologically follow Kokomi's legendary quest where you meet Kujou Sara saying that she came at the Shogun's request to start diplomatic negotiations with Watatsumi.
Basically, Ei was the 1st to make the 1st move to peace between Inazuma and Watatsumi.
The second thing Ei did for Inazuma bothers me a lot because they don't tell about it in the main story or in any relevant in-game books.
In a highly irrelevant and forgettable place, you can find letters written by soldiers describing the rescue missions the Shogun launched to rescue civilians from dangerous islands like Amakumo Island.
(Shows that Inazuma's history is very poorly written).
The third is that he wanted to apologize to Kazuha by bringing glory back to Kazuha's blacksmith family and a private visit with her. But Kazuhs refused the gift, preferring his life as a wandering traveler.
Calling someone out on their faults doesn't erase the good they do as well.
You are right in saying that because of her mistakes, people in Inazuma suffered, but here's where you drop the ball.
Just because she can't bring those who died back to life, doesn't mean she can't own up and take responsibility for her mistakes. she can still do her part for those who live.
After her character quests, she devoted her life to fixing and making Inazuma a better place to live in.
In the festival event that takes place some time afterwards, we get to see how much better the nation has become because of her. Now that she's owned up to her mistakes, and is attempting to better herself and her nation.
Kazuha states that he would never have thought after coming leaving and coming back to Inazuma, how much better the nation has become.
Shinobu even out right gives her credit for changing the nation for the better.
And we have numerous of NPC spot out stating that inazuma Has improved for the better
Also you do realize most of those deaths was the for the resistance right?

@@forresttheanimezilla3763 Wow, ok thank you for that, I missed a lot of those details and that DOES seem to be a noticeable improvement on how I viewed Ei. I had no knowledge of any letters explaining how Ei sent soldiers to rescue anyone. As for the peace talks I simply viewed as the only logical end to the war but under scrutiny things could have gone a lot worse clearly, if Ei had not wished to end the conflict peacefully.
While much of what you pointed out, and thank you, does paint Ei in a better light, I'm still not 100% on board with her being redeemed. As you also pointed out, there's nothing that can be done for the departed nor would there have been any salvation required if Ei hadn't chosen the path that she did. I expect the majority of the difference being made is simply not having fishing and merchant boats blown out of the water any more.
In the end it comes down to a cease of all hostilities with the offer of aide and assistance for refugees. There is also the freedom to now travel beyond the borders of Inazuma and the return of Visions. Which again is much the same. I'm deeply curious about how much Inazuma is improving beyond that. Yes not being murdered surely is an improvement but are they reclaiming the island homes previously lost from the kingdom falling into ruin, if so when can we expect to SEE them being rebuilt or is it just assumed that things are BETTER because the threat of imminent death is no longer on such grand display? Words are just words without the actions to manifest them.
Still, I'll take your comments under deeper consideration and chalk some of it up to the quality of writing in Inazuma but I hesitate to embrace Ei as having been truly redeemed as of yet.

While i cant say i'm satisfied with his interlude quest, one thing i learn from it is what Irminsul actually did.
Irminsul really just changed the record, nothing in the past actually changed, and it left bitter taste for me since even though Scara didnt plan to run away, it feels like he just made things worse by making people he'd wronged forgot about him. Well erasing Rukkhadevata does do something, as the thing we actually erase is the existence of forbidden knowledge that was fused with Rukkhadevata, so erasing the memory seems to be enough to get a result.
But that doesnt mean changing the past isnt actually a thing. In Ei's 2nd story quest, we witnessed her planting the Sacred Sakura into 500 years ago, and that, i think, is changing the past. Unlike the change in Irminsul, we already see and interact with Sacred Sakura even before that quest, as we live in the timeline where Sacred Sakura exist. We just never see the actual timeline where it didnt exist, and i fear that in that timeline, Inazuma isnt as peaceful (or even exist) as they probably failed to defend themselves from the corruption since Sacred Sakura was the one responsible to absorb the filth. Maybe if Scara sought God of Time, his attempt to change the past by erasing himself or whatever could actually solve something. He unfortunately missed it as whoever mysterious voice is (that i thought is Istaroth), it's only interested in traveller.
I wonder what hoyoverse will do with this possibility of either changing the record or the actual past. Maybe we really gonna 'reweave' the fate like Dainsleif said.

I only disagree with 2 things:
It was not only to set things right. Him erasing himself was selfish, there are many ways he could have manipulated Irminsul like just literally changing the fact that he ever met those people (which is what the Irminsul did in the end "memory wise"). He never been born at all, he didn't want to face the guilt.
He doesn't need reconciliation with mama. Maybe not everyone has heard this line, but he knows the reason why Ei left him. Wether he believes it or not as the reason, it's the truth that "she didn't want to interfere with his future". And that IS NOT a justification. If he believes that's the reason, then he finds it insulting and ridiculous (and it totally is, and there is nothing wrong with Ei making an awful decision, we all have done that). If he things there is something else behind, he will find out that there really isn't. He might dig more into Ei's mourning and the whole deal and will come to the same conclusion that what of it? It doesn't justify, just the same way Scaramouche's own past doesn't justify many things he did. A reason is a reason, but its not synonym of justification. The best that could happen to him it's that he understands and just gets over the fact by becoming indifferent, and if they ever get close great! But some people CRAVE that reconciliation as if it was necessary or some sort of MUST HAPPEN... Nope, we don't have to forgive everything.

I was kinda hoping he had an ability to control his enemies like how he was used as a puppet for ei and the fatui. Maybe a character in the future will have this ability I'm looking for. I do think Scaramouche did manage to change the past tho not as he intended
I dat this because he did intend to erase himself in hopes that it will bring back those that have died but he forgot most of them like Niwa and the others alongside the child didn't die because of him they died because of Dottore so erasing himself meant nothing for Dottore's plans.
Now about the fate of Raiden Gokuden this is another reason why I think Scaramouche did change the past.
As we have seen with the story of Rukhadevata that in case of erasure Irminsul tents full in the blanks with an appropriate answer to the riddle of the missing history, not accurate but close. In Scaramouche's case however it did not do this. For his erasure it not only redirect his path through time and history but also created a completely new answer to the mystery of the Raiden Gokuden which being the Psychopath Murderer who did not exist during the original events of the Raiden Gokuden incidents. Not to mention the resolution of the incident was also change because of this, Kazuha and Ayaka's ancestors/grandparents did encounter the murderer at the same place as they did Scaramouche but as this time they were not fighting against a Divine creation they won the fight instead of the original outcome which was Kazuha's Grandfather being the only survivor of the incident. This is also the reason why i think the Iradori festival letter disappeared. The letters original purpose was to warn theur successor about the one(Scaramouche) who nearly destroyed the Raiden Gokuden because even they couldn't defeat him and the future generations might encounter hum again. But as the outcome of their encounter changed with the murderer being captured and executed the letter lost its purpose to exist because there was nothing for Kazuha's Grandfather to warn the future generations about.

One thing I want to say is that Irminsoul CAN'T change the past (or the timeline), it can only change memories.
When Scaramouche tried to erase himself from Irminsoul he did it because he wanted to save Niwa and the people of Tatarasuna (this is because he believes that the reason Dottore targeted them in the first place was because of him. Because he basically became Dottore's number 1 test subject back then) as well as undoing what he did to the Raiden Gokaden so they could live a peaceful life where the clans never fell from grace.
Scaramouche wanted to change the timeline, but as I said before, Irminsoul can't do that.
Erasing himself from Irminsoul just changed everyone's memories of what actually happened, as if he never existed, but that doesn't mean he never existed. He still lived in Tatarasuna all those years ago, he still sabotaged the Raiden Gokaden, he still joined the fatui and became a "god" in Sumeru. It's just that no one remembers he did and there's no data he ever existed in the first place.
Think about Irminsoul as a computer with all the data of all the students in a school.
Imagine student A got into a fight with student B and broke their leg, that event then is recorded in student A's profile.
If we now delete their profile, all the data associated to him would dissapear from the computer, including the fact that he broke student B's leg.
But just because that data was erased it doesn't mean that it didn't happen. Student B's leg is still broken.
Irminsoul works like this, just that everything that is erased from Irminsoul is also erased from everyone's memories.
If Scaramouche would have been successful in erasing himself and changing the past Kazuha would still be the head of his clan, the five branches of the Raiden Gokaden would still exist and Ayato and Ayaka probably would have a slightly different life.

@@Loki-rb3ns As I said before Scaramouche did change the past as proven by the disappearance of Kaedehara Yoshinori's letter and outcome of the encounter of the Raiden Gokuden's culprit. In the original version they all were nearly wiped out but this time they won and executed the culprit. Niwa and the others still died because as I said before their deaths are outcome Dottore's actions not Scaramouche's, even in the allegory story that Nahida' made for Scaramouche said that Dottore was present BEFORE they found Scaramouche. Dottore never came to Inazuma for Scaramouche, he was more of an accidental find.
Irminsul doesn't just erase data, it has to fill in the blanks too, which it does by giving an approximate answer (not accurate but close) like for example after Rukhadevata's erasure someone had to have taken credit for her actions and Nahida is the closest thing Rukhadevata so she became the original Dendro Archon in the history.

    • @Loki-rb3ns

@@Ren_rz I think you're mixing the Tatarasuna incident and the Raiden Gokaden fall events. Dottore is what caused the Tatarasuna incident where half Tatarasuna died, including Niwa; while Scaramouche was the one responsible for the fall of the Raiden Gokaden.
The dissapearance of Yoshinori's letter happened because it directly mentioned Kunikuzushi. Irminsoul changes all records and memories of the things deleted.
Since Scaramouche doesn't exist for the people of Teyvat anymore, Kunikuzushi also doesn't exist since they are the same person.
Like you said, Irminsoul has to fill in the blanks in order for the information inside it to be coherent.
When Nahida deleted Rhukkadevata from Irminsoul, everything that Rhukkadevata did was now attributed to Nahida. However, we know that's not true because Nahida wasn't even born back then and she's still 500 years old.
With Scaramouche it's the same. He still commited his crimes against the Raiden Gokaden, but since Irminsoul can't change the past and Scaramouche doesn't exist inside Irminsoul anymore, the events that happened were left with no culprit, so the tree attributed those actions to Yoshinori.
It's not that Irminsoul changed that happened/the timeline. It just changed how it was remembered/recorded.
We know this is true because of the vase at the end of the quest.
Paimon broke the vase because she got scared when she understood what Scara was trying to do, but after Scaramouche deleted himself from Irminsoul the vase was still broken.
Paimon still broke the vase because she got scared because of Scaramouche, she just doesn't remember it because for the people of Teyvat Scaramouche doesn't exist anymore.
If Irminsoul could change the timeline/past the vase wouldn't be broken since there would be no reason for it to be, but since it can't change the past, the vase is still broken but no one remembers why.

Correction, the first two times Scaramouche "wanted" to kill the traveler it was him being ordered or suggested to by a superior or subordinate and he never wanted to of his own volition, and he even decides to just let us go at the end of unreconciled stars by using his lackeys to hold us off.
In Sumeru he also specifically warns the traveler that they and Nahida shouldn't bother fighting and he doesn't immediately attempt to kill us at that point either, and it's only when we confront him directly that he fights us.
Sure, you can say "he still tried to kill us even if he didn't come after us or want to of his own volition" but I think that's incredibly hypocritical to say when the traveler has killed plenty of people and things over the course of their journey at this point and we don't exactly have any moral high ground to stand on.
Being salty over the teppei insults is obviously just up to the person but, knowing how Scaramouche was just a mask and he never truly hated people as much as he pretended, it was just a bunch of sophistry in an attempt to convince himself that he was right to hate humanity. That's my perspective and why I don't really hold that against him.

    • @cosmickaustav
      @cosmickaustav Рік тому +2

@@sneakretster I can totally understand your take and perspective too and honestly it isn't wrong either. But pardon me but I'd like to add another correction too. In Mondstadt, although he was under the orders of the Jester, Scaramouche's words after Mona teleported us away was "The first time the Mililith were present, I had to forego the chance to strike down Mondstadt's savior. This time was the perfect moment... I was mere seconds away..." it might just how different people perceive storywriting, but IMO, his words at that time also had his own desires mixed with the orders from his senior Harbinger. Senior Harbingers do give out orders to junior ones but they participate in events on their own violation too. In Sumeru it was mainly a joint collaboration between Doctor and Grand Sage Azar but it was done infront of Scaramouche and he gave his approval in becoming the God.
Coming to the point of Teppei, people now do say that those who dislike Scara mention Teppei because of "being salty" so let me rephrase my words as that wasn't my intention. Scaramouche didn't exactly mock Teppei only. He started the conversation by mentioning Traveler's friend being a "lost cause" and then he spoke in general targeting all resistance soliders.
Your point of him not wanting to kill Nahida and traveler at start of Sumeru archon quest is indeed correct. He just wanted us no not cause any hindrance in his final path of becoming a true god and that's correct point.
As for the traveler you're again right. The Traveler isn't a complete pure soul either. Traveler did kill the entire last members of Iwakura clan and probably many hilichurls (not writing countless, as canon Traveler has killed less then us as player) even after knowing their identity.
Now, I did say in my 1st comment that moreover I am glad dure to his and Nahida's collaboration as we will get to experience the story of the anti-hero Wanderer who also helps Nahida and also the traveler which I'm very excited to see. But once again, my opinion stays that I for myself dislike the character "Scaramouche" and "Kunikuzushi" and to be honest I do not dislike the character "Wanderer" as much as I dislike the other two.

    • @sneakretster
      @sneakretster Рік тому +6

@@cosmickaustav fair enough then, I suppose it just comes down to people's own thresholds for forgiveness and empathy. At least you seem to like the direction Wanderer is headed, and that's more than some other people who refuse to empathize with him entirely.
I personally always liked Scaramouche because I knew he wasn't who he was pretending to be from the moment we got even a little lore on his background, and I've always been empathetic to him because that's the kind of treatment he would've needed to reaffirm him and show him that humanity isn't so inherently evil.
He has committed evil acts in the past, but everything he did was emotionally driven and impulsive, and it was in response to losing people he cared about and I'm able to forgive someone for acting impulsively as long as they can aknowledge their mistakes and improve themselves, which he has now and even as Scaramouche he already had stopped senselessly killing the swordsmiths because he realized that revenge was meaningless.

Maybe this is a hot take, but I really don't like how they handled Scara's story; they had a really, really good thing going with the other 3.x chapters but IMO they vaulted over an entire shiver of sharks with this whole retconning business... immediately after the first retcon, no less.
IMO it would have been far more interesting to see Scara have to deal with the direct consequences of his actions as the story progressed - the Fatui, having to deal with Ei and his effects on Inazuman history... but not anymore I guess. To me it feels like they wrote him into a corner they didn't want to maneuver him out of (probably because it would take far too much time to do so competently while also trying to tell the Traveler and everyone else's stories), and so they just retconned everything to simplify his path to redemption.
Now to be fair there's some weirdness with this retcon like his Harbinger seat still being open; I find it hard to believe that someone wouldn't have taken his place after all that time unless they know he still exists - and possibly what he did - in some form - especially after establishing a loophole to get around this whole memory-erasure business. So maybe there's going to be some complications or contrivances with his 'erasure' that come up later... but as-is I don't like how they just retconned away the consequences of his past misdeeds.

So I feel the need to correct that conception. They did NOT delete his past sins. Irmunsul doesn’t rewrite time, it only changes how people remember it and thusly how it is recorded. This is why no-one was altered in any meaningful way, AND why everyone who died still died. (Such as Teppei ect) Now it is Wanderer’s job to try as he might to accept responsibility and seek to make reparations for his past transgressions. (He still did those things, history just doesn’t remember he was the one responsible)

Bro...Irminsul doesn't rewrite history. Did you even play the quest??? Because he says himself at the end of the quest that he plans on telling the descendants of the blacksmiths that he destroyed the Raiden Gokaden and I quote "let them stab me in the chest. It's probably what should've happened."
3.3 Interlude was less of a redmeption arc and more of a beginning for a redemption arc. He hasn't redeemed himself yet, but he made the intention. Also he didn't erase himself from Irminsul because he wanted to run away from his sins. He erased himself because he wanted the people that died to come back to life. He thought that by deleting himself, all the people that died because of him would come back to life. He said it HIMSELF: "All those who died because of me deserve a second chance."
The dialogue is IN the quest, y'all can't read.

@@loola8908 yes I did play the quest, i just don't remember everything about it. And now that you are saying it's the beginning of a redemption arc, it makes more sense but knowing mihoyo they will not do anything more with it until the last 10 minutes of the story before his death or something similar. But I feel like scara still got away with it too easy, he didn't get to suffer the consequences of being a fatuus hamburger and he didn't get to suffer the consequences of killing the blacksmiths. At least not yet and probably never cause nobody knows what happened anymore other than the traveler, paimon, nahida and whoever the voice is. And I feel like he wouldn't even consider redeeming himself if scara's memories weren't put in the wanderer (who is a person that is kind and has the capacity for empathy unlike the fatuus scara)

@@codeunknown2761 You know fair enough, I have been feeling rather frustrated about the way they dealt with scara as a character. Not because I cared about him before the quest, but because he could have been so much more. And I probably shouldn't have started with "I wanted him to die"

scara better not exist in genshin. This shit existence made genshin became rotten in stories wise .
