  • After 17 days in space, Dragon and Axiom Space’s Ax-1 astronauts, Michael López-Alegría, Larry Connor, Eytan Stibbe, and Mark Pathy returned to Earth, splashing down off the coast of Florida at 1:06 p.m. ET on Monday, April 25.
    Ax-1 was Axiom Space’s first all-private astronaut mission to the International Space Station.

      When a large corporation can enlist their own employees to present you get the best of all worlds (expertise, personal involvement, reduced broadcasting faff, personal development etc). The other majot company who's being do that for years is Lucasfilm. Look at their SW Convention (Celebration) coverage on YT.

      Yep, but what's great about these is, THEY GET REUSED!
      Shuttle was highly inefficient because you have to launch these HUGE wings and tailplane and all the heavy tiles and structures to support and protect them into space, just to use them for the last few minutes of the landing, basically. PLUS the weight of the landing gear and tires and all of that only used in the last few seconds. Parachutes are much lighter and more foolproof, protected by the heat shield within the vehicle, and a more efficient means of recovery structurally and weight-wise. Later! OL J R :)

      Those chutes are packed SO tight that they're actually harder than a block of wood... pretty standard for military hardware, like the drag chutes on the back of hydrogen bombs. All this uses the same methods. Saw a chute at the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque that weighed like 800 pounds and was packed into a can about a foot in diameter or so and about 3 feet long. Same way they did it on Apollo and still do it on Soyuz. They're blown out of their cans with a mortar charge!

      This expelling charge was covered and screwed with a special panel so as not to damage it and it did not accidentally explode. Ahaha

    I've been waiting for this ever since I watched the launch and I heard that they were launching only the second ever astronaut from Israel, especially when it was mentioned what had happened to the first one. For almost two decades, their only ever astronaut was a man who perished in the _Columbia_ disaster. Now at last we can say with certainty that Eytan Stibbe is the _first Israeli astronaut who lived to tell the tale_ (although Ramon's tale was told through recovered fragments of his diary). Welcome home! Your country will be proud.
    I also found out about some of the science he's been doing, and it sounds amazing. Here's hoping his research on liquid-formed lenses might one day be used to build a telescope beyond our wildest dreams.

    At 5:24, it isn't "friction" that heats things up on reentry. It is the extreme compression of the air out ahead of the spacecraft as it slams into the atmosphere at high speed which heats the air high enough to generate the plasma around the capsule. Any "friction" from the air is only a minor component in the heating.

    • @jaimeduncan6167
      @jaimeduncan6167 2 роки тому

      You are correct , but it’s minor only once you are out of the hypersonic regime you become basically a blunt Concorde, so one has to take into account. Even so, as you stated, compared to compresión radiation heat is minimal

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 2 роки тому

      Yep that MMH and NTO is nothing to play with... during the final descent of the Apollo Soyuz Test Project Apollo spacecraft, a pressurization equalization valve opened prematurely when the maneuvering thruster propellants were still venting overboard, which Apollo did on the way down before it splashed down, and some fumes of the nitrogen tetroxide (NTO) or hydrazine were sucked into the cabin-- the astronauts were coughing and gagging profusely and their eyes watering when they were finally down and opened the hatch. Not much was said about it, since it was the last Apollo flight, but it was a near miss. I can't recall if any of them suffered lung damage from it. Those hypergolic (self-igniting-- ignite on contact with each other) propellants are room-temperature storable, so don't require refrigeration or highly pressurized tanks to keep them in a liquid state (usually just heaters to prevent freezing, and are stored in highly pressurized tanks because it's a pressure fed rocket thruster system-- valves open tank pressure pushes the propellant in through the injectors where it ignites and burns). BUT both are highly toxic and some are really corrosive! SO that's why they take such precautions with the gas masks and "sniffer" devices to check for leaks before they handle the spacecraft, hook it up, lift if out, and open the hatch... Why they don't want any of the public around, either, and why they worried about people picking up or touching shuttle debris after the Columbia disaster-- some of that stuff could have contained or been contaminated by the highly poisonous and corrosive hypergolic propellants used in the maneuvering jets and the OAMS orbital propulsion engines...
      Later! OL J R :)
