Some strange CRM going on there. A 54 y.o. captain with thousands of hours seemingly deferring to an 800 hour junior f.o.? In light of all those warnings, why the hell would they continue with their take off?
@gregbarnlund: I believe you mean total ABSENCE of CRM. These were not pilots, but contraband smugglers Hell-bent on their delivery. "Captain" of doubts and deferring to junior says it all. I don't have to emphasize the 27 warnings in such a short space of time.
Aviation Safety Network states in their reporting article that the same crew repositioned the same plane to Nairobi Kenyatta airport the day before this flight and unbelievably the CVR picked up the same warnings being presented to the crew as the ones they had during takeoff on the day of the crash. The investigators were astounded that even on the flight the day before there wasn’t even a conversation between the flight crew regarding the warnings and what their significance could be. 😮 Obviously the crew made the repositioning flight without incident so we will never know why the crew didn’t react to the warning system. I’m at a loss for words…How did this “Captain” fly for as little my as he did and not manage to kill himself or others before July 2014 🤷♂️
At 7:06 you can see a sign that says “Junior School” in front of the building that appeared to be the most heavily impacted. We have to thank the good lord that this was a very early morning flight and that no children were in the school at the time. RIP to the crew, their families and friends. 🙏🏼
I was stunned to see what happened. A Fokker 50, it's virtualy imposible to crash. But given the foolness of the capt, they'd never be able to make V2 + required speed due to overweight. How can one continue well before V1 with a known engine failure... Ahhh yeah... unlisted stuff aboard... welcome to Coconut Airways, we'll fly anything anywear no questions asked.
It's interesting that the investigators never mentioned the effect of not feathering the prop. They obviously should not have taken off, but the added drag of an unfathered prop would give them more of a performance hit than the added weight. Identify, verify, feather.
Was the Captain's plan to fly a 2 hour flight (actually longer since the airspeed would have been so low) with only 1 engine operating normally? Insane.
I did t see where they feathered the failing left engine. Without doing so with reduced power and additional drag the speed decreased to the Vmc speed thus the roll over to the left. The captain with that much time asking the FO “Should we continue?” Shows a total lack of command presence. Number one rule of being a captain “You don’t let the monkeys run the banana boat”.
it: it happened in a poor country in which planes are not the best anymore and they are used to small failures and to still fly with them. While a small failure in a richer country means "abort takeoff", a small failure in a poor country is more than normal and they expect to fly with a not 100% working airplane
"Hey, let's put an extra 1000 LBS in the back. No one will know." These pilots certainly deserved to kick it, but I wonder if the other 2 crew were also in on the criminal aspect of it. I do prefer voice narrated videos but the animation and gorgeous sky/background was very good.
For several months after, cats from all over Somalia converged on the crash site, cause it was catnip found in the cargo hold and in Africa, transportation of catnip is highly illegal.
Appalling conduct by the Captain and F.O. Agree with below comments about Captain deferring to opinion of a nearly=rookie F.O. Something's up with this mess.
I haven't flown for a long time however, I see these kind of videos and ask myself: would I have done the same thing? The answer is no, safety is paramount. When in doubt don't do it.
Could the “illegal cargo” be the huge bales of green plant material in one of the crash photographs? That could also have been the reason for overweight. They could have easily aborted the takeoff at several points in the takeoff roll. Numbskulls.
How did this airline retain its licence after such a comprehensive shitshow? Judging by the photos, they crashed into a school. At another time of day this could have been a catastrophe.
Jesus Christ!Where did the good man get his stripes. At he casino?Utterly incompetent. The poor first officer tried hard to advise him to abort. That guy was never apt for flying.RIP.
I want to know : 1. was the Capt. a good, honest white man or something else 2. why you mentioned the contraband w/o saying what it was 3. what mental shortfalls you have.
I will not watch any more of your videos you see I can’t read and you should have them narrated by somebody for people like me. Shame on you for not realizing that and remember, there’s a lot of us.
The cause of the engine failure (if it was indeed a failure and not incorrect operation) is unimportant. An engine failure at a speed below V1 should always mean rejecting the takeoff.
Such early signs yet they would rather risk it than stop and figure out what was happening. Get homeitis is the cause here. More effort to get the job done and go home than stopping and get home later. I wish they picked the latter. 🤷♂️
Absolutely ridiculous!!! No CRM, No airmanship and absolutely certain disaster from the moment the warnings began in the cockpit. An aborted takeoff would have saved everything and everyone. A classic case of who's flying the aircraft??!
These 'pilots' were completely incompetent and criminal as well.
Most of all these warnings were obviously well below V 1 ....
I guess they forgot about the impossible turn…
It's worth noting that the Fokker F50 is, and always has been, one of the safest passenger aircraft in the skies.

No aircraft can be self-aware against abuse when the pilots have the will.
It's when they fall out of the skies that they tend to go "Bump!"
Obviously
Impressive video. Enjoyed the flight recreation and the running narrative. Excellent. Thumbs up.
Thanks for watching!
Incredible, the captain risks his life, instead of being charged with ilegal cargo

It’s such an egregious case study that I can’t help but think that the crew might’ve partook a little on the “unlisted cargo”. 🤷🏻♂️✈️ 📦 🤏🏼😮
Mogadishu, 2014 = loaded with arms
Because he was incredibly incompetent beyond words.
Every time I see what I think has to be the stupidest crash ever to occur, I later learn that there's another one that's worse.
Did they feather the engine that was not producing power? I am guessing no.
Such a crazy series of crazy decisions to keep going. So many chances to stop this.
Slick & stylish presentation - very nicely done! … 👍
Reminds me of the Roberto Clemente crash where a similar overloaded, issue-plagued plane tried to go.
It's interesting that the investigators never mentioned the effect of not feathering the prop. They obviously should not have taken off, but the added drag of an unfathered prop would give them more of a performance hit than the added weight. Identify, verify, feather.
Enormous amount of lack of judgment.
What the use of having a loadmaster if he can't be relied upon to load the airplane above it's designed load capacity?
He was probably told to do that. It wasn't probably his choice.
Why would you continue a takeoff with loss of thrust when below V1?
Mind blowing they wouldn’t abort 🤯
Was Rotate a command or a hope?

Left engine loses power. Plane pulls to left.

One has to be impressed that 27 warnings were ignored. Bet that was not their first rodeo playing that game.
Inexcusable! Zero judgement displayed. That CP should've never been in the left seat...or even the cockpit for that matter.
Why was he asking the FO whether to abort ?
@@grahamstevenson1740 I have no idea other than he obviously possessed really lousy judgement. It should've been a no-brainer.
In Europe an "airline" like this would have been shut down by the authorities.

I mean how stupid can a pilot be? I never thought it was that possible but this crash proves it!!!!
I wonder what kind of illegal stuff they were carrying?
Strange that they kept the Skyward part of the name. You'd think that would be a dead giveaway !
With all due respect, there are those who should NEVER be in the left OR right seats.
Did they actually know how to fly??
So ... drugs, guns, or illegal wildlife products (ivory, etc.)?
Seems like Groundward would be a more accurate name . . . Since they were changing it anyway
Haha, I flew Skyward Express several times in Kenya
