Joe greetings from Colombia thank you so much for your work! Here's an interesting question.. I think...where do you think self-knowledge ends and self-obsession begins. It'd be fun to see you try and Tackle this one in a video. Keep up the good work!

I have found your channel around a month ago and I'd like to say that you are doing such a great job. I have grown an interest in philosophy since I have realised that I am extremely unhappy and can not comprehend what to do with my life. I hoped philosophy can help me find some answers but I really didn't know from what to start. I like your videos very much because you provide a brief understanding of what a philosopher was writing about. Thanks to that I was able to find what can help me solve my problems. I have already bought some books you have mentioned on your channel. So I want to thank you for inspiring people to get into philosophy. Keep it up! I believe that there are more people like me for whom you have managed to help in one way or another!
The insights and teachings of these philosophers have profoundly shaped my intellectual growth and personal character. Their ideas challenged my thinking, pushing me to question assumptions and explore deeper truths. As a result, I have become a more critical thinker and a more empathetic individual, better equipped to engage with complex moral and ethical dilemmas in my life. BTW, you are my favourite UA-camr. Do you know dr Robert Sapolsky? He is a neuroscientist and primatologist. He is a professor of biology, neurology, and neurosurgery at Stanford University. He has done extensive work on human behavior. You can check his books or the numerous interviews and lectures on UA-cam. There’s even his full university course available on UA-cam. The reason I mention him is because however I try to take an interest in philosophy, it always feels like post hoc rationalization where each thinker comes to their own personal conclusions. Opinions more than facts. Behavioral science instead tells us where human behavior comes from, the role of genes, the role of environment, the role of hormones and brain chemistry, and so on. It explains behavior, doesn’t just speculate abstractly about it. Imo it’s far more deep, enlightening, interesting and useful than just philosophy.
@pansepot1490 I'm interested in philosophy because "behavioral science" is speculateble, if I can put it that way. Human behavior isn't always rational and philosophy helps me, personally, to grow into a better version of myself by overcoming my irrational flaws and turning them into my best qualities. I wouldn't find my love if not Marcus Aurelius and I wouldn't strive to be a better human if not Nizshe.

I recently saw a meme about Dostoyevsky, which went like this: “ Blaming Dostoyevsky for the way that I turned out…..” Well perhaps, the person who made that particular meme doesn't actually understand the profound meaning and philosophy behind Dostoyevsky’s work. He actually always refrained from encouraging anyone towards feeling resentment, jealousy, spite, or the deep-seated self-hatred that can lead to a diabolical mindset. His works often embody complex themes and layered meanings, reflecting a profound understanding of human emotions. However, it is crucial for readers to delve into the nuances of his literature, engaging thoughtfully with the text, to grasp the essence of his message. Through careful interpretation, one can uncover the intentions behind his words, which often seek to promote a more compassionate and self-aware approach to life, rather than one filled with negativity and bitterness.
as you said almost impossible to feel joy and resentment together, I would say, that like carl jung, we must learn to live with our shadow, that means we need to be aware of our ego, of our ego needs, but in order to find serenity or rather say harmony between the two, you can not neglect either one of them, we can feel the joy of resentment withing ourself, and not as a primary but only as a tool to feel more joy, you could imagine it as having to walk with your little kid while doing grocery and he start crying for you to buy him this candy or this toy, and you know you shouldn't but as long as behaves you wouldnt mind giving to him, not as a priority, as a way to find harmony between the two, cannot neglect either one, if humans wouldnt need to know the feeling of resentment they wouldn't
Hey UA, do you think you could possibly do an essay on the work of David Foster Wallace sometime in the future? He has a lot of profound and poignant takes on a myriad of different subjects both from his interviews and bibliography. IJ alone could use a thorough deep dive itself. Wallace’s take though on future implications of mass media, mental health, societal loneliness, addiction, consumption, political polarization, amongst other topics, I have found deeply enlightening on a personal level. Also also, Wallace (it seems) to have been fundamental to the current epoch of Metamodernist Literature and Metamodernism in a general (the movement that’s supposed to be the successor to the Postmodernism). Great work as always! Thanks!

Before one can ever take responsibility for one's actions one must first be the sort of person who wishes to take responsibility for their actions, a necessary and sufficient condition over which one can have no conscious control, even if Free Will does exist
It is bad faith for me to pretend that I am okay in social situations. In a way, I’ve started to act a certain way because I’m trying to protect the girl that was hurt before. If I meet somebody new, it can be that I won’t give them much chance at all because “I know” that they can’t help me. Part of this probably comes from the frustration that whenever I do tell about my problems to someone, they tend to not take them very seriously. But I think that I’ve finally met people that deserve a chance. I believe everyone does without me dismissing them so that I can avoid being hurt again :)
Take responsibility for your choices they may have been bad ones but now you can make better choices . To quote the bible lol As an Atheist in the traditional meaning of God is not a being ,but there is a mode of being that is beneficial , I get the irony .......there is wisdom in the verse " The Lord will give [unyielding and impenetrable] strength to His people ( people that behave this way ) ; the Lord will bless His people with peace. to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. "
Loved the video. Was curious, what are your thoughts on making decisions based purely on cold hard logic or factoring in genuine human emotion. Lets say for example you are employed at a company but for you to get your contact re-newed , you need to outperform your collegue whom you currently think of as a friend. You really need the job so would you help your friend at the cost of your own desire or trample them underfoot?
Brilliant.... and ironical and funny as well. Only, regrettable to hear he suffers from chronic pain. Bad luck indeed. I hope the very best for him... I am sure he has a great future in spite of everything.
Everything we do takes time, but we don't have infinite time, so we always have to sacrifice something. It's hard to make friends if you have to do something else. Some people are not only miserable because they ruin their life spiritually, for example by being arrogant, but they find themselves in circumstances where it's difficult to appreciate life. What can people do for whom having friends is an effort rather than a pleasure?
13:00 dicothamy of control is one of the hardest stoic principles to follow, I force myself very hard to follow it and still fall short in some situations.
Literally me right now. I'm working at KPMG, always feel so miserable and only find resentment when I think about my colleagues. I haven't felt joy for a long time, I lose my interest in hobby. The weekend is now like 2 days of mental tortment so I no longer can enjoy friday night.
I've been doing this my whole life. Now, all I experience is impotent rage, anger at God, hatred for myself and the world at large, and enough resentful envy to make me physically ill. Inescapable victim mentality. Screaming rage at the smallest blunder until my throat hurts. Ambitions replaced by revenge fantasies. A self replaced by a shame core. Life itself is a deep, grave injustice to me. If I'm the only person who can save me, I'm boned.
Hola, quiero compartir algo.
No I've already done it thank you, I just wanted to see if those amateurs (philosophers). Had any good ideas on it btw a really philosopher is Brian Clough.
I wonder if we can inverse these with counter factuals. Can you imagine a world where narcissism is actually the healthiest mindset? One where envy isn't just encouraged but has positive outcomes? What would such a world or society look like? The closest thing I can think of is the Warhammer 40k universe. Are there any other sources that explore this idea? Edit for clarification: The goal is to externalize this exercise to show how we want the world to look instead of the inward facing nature of this video.
acc to Nietzsche chrisitian world is built around resentment. narcissism as the ideal mindset. eh, look at usa, insta etc, and the world of commercials with slogans 'because you worth it'. envy? 'greed is good!' yuppies' motto. and when it comes to nihilistic hedonism, we've been there too. for a long while already.
After barley watching the introduction of this video the 2 philosophers of thought when it comes to self sabotage and self gratification on the sense that rejects the foundation of modernity is Diogenes and Charles Bukowski
Pronouncing "Albert Camus" how its supposed to "Owlbearrrr Camooo" is probably the most non intentional protentious thing I've heard all year if ever 😂 always gives me a giggle hearing him say it.
