The beginning of this makes me think of something Rush used to say. “ You know the quality of a man by the way he treats those that can do nothing for him “.
This is why it's so important to help your loved ones and be genuinely empathetic and kind to others. We need to actively fight our selfishness and bitterness! Thank you so much for your videos. I grew up around gambling and alcohol and fortunately, my experiences taught me *not* to gamble and *not* to drink.
I am an opioid addict of 30 years. I testify to the truth of your ideas about the addiction, everything about the life, becoming who you are. To defeat it, I have had to utterly destroy who I was. My memories appear to be someone else’s. I am a writer and musician. You know what happened to me, because half of the music you love was made by people like me. They laid a trail that many of us recognize and follow to our beautiful dooms.
This is interesting. I have a problem with it as well (just another category... "bath salts") and I think that the main factor is: are you very aware of it? Are you actively choosing your kind of hell? Based on this, I think that, since we all can have problems, we can choose the authenticity path. I don't feel like I have to destroy the old me. I think in fact I'm new again, even with the substance. Seeing it as wrong strongly depends by the fact that society is quick to judge. And I think that, as long you're making a conscious decision and you're satisfied with it (even with its price because you know what we all say... "what goes up...") no one has the right to choose what's better for you. It's their perception. Their own need. Life is absurd anyway, and we must choose our kind of absurd instead of being just another sheep in the world. This doesn't mean that you should go out right now and buy a substance... it means that it doesn't matter the object, but HOW MUCH you want it. That reveals your true self. Are you strong enough to follow your unique and solitary path? Are you able to face others and their constant judgement? Are you sure you can pay the price? I'm writing this because your comment caught my attention... I have the same feeling, I actually have emotional amnesia. It feels like everything just happened and that's fine. It became almost normal. Then I look at others in shock, wondering how people can live such a shallow life. And then see my pain and feel like a misfit. It's like coming from war and having to tell the horrors you experienced, but you're surrounded by kids. They cannot understand. And if you explain it, they'll just look at you shocked without taking the full meaning... just picturing the shocking image... I am a writer and musician too. You know, I thought about Depeche Mode after reading this. "Our beautiful dooms"... ah, life is so fragile, and that makes it so powerful... I want to live on the edge of it and notice its duality... the strong urge to dive deeper, to see beyond. The thin line between madness and geniality is eating me inside, and this makes me different from most people day by day. I have a feeling, or a hope, that you'd recognise my words. It's a bit motivated by the fact that you're opening yourself under this kind of video...

In my experience, gambling provokes the will to never give up. This will to never give up can both be good or evil depending on how you use it. And the will to never give up fundamentally will always be a glorious experience when the action is at hand. But depending on how it goes, you will either feel ecstasy or despair if your goal is to win. But if you do it solely for the journey, it doesn’t really matter if you win or lose.

I'm a recovering alcoholic and in AA I've heard people call that sort of pride being "terminally unique." Someone who views themselves as terminally unique thinks that they're alcoholism is so uniquely bad, or so different in some way from all those other alcoholics who managed to stop drinking, that they are beyond redemption, that they will never be able to get help or improve themselves. Even though it appears, on the surface of it, to be self-deprecating, it can be an intoxicating (pun intended) mindset to adopt.
The problem I have with stories that have the same message as the gambler, is that they all present desire as the root of there suffering. To me it seems that reason is the cause of their issues, to be able to justify net negative actions. People will argue that if only they would be more rational they would see the folly of their actions. No the quote garbage in garbage out extends to more than AI. What these protagonists need is an escape from their living stances , a balanced diet for their oh too rational brain to chew on.
My best teacher who showed me all of Dostoevsky was Dr Folievsky, who was one of the very few survivors of an eastern Polish concentration camp. 1982. we were 4 students who had to have read at least a dozen pieces of Russian literature. I read every piece of Dostoevsky's work and have never stopped philosophisin about my existence worldwide, mainly in southern Spain. I disagree with certain "parameters" as explained above but generically agree. I need to teach the {narrator" a couple of issues. I still appreciate the fact that I came from and was brought up inside the scope of extreme poverty...but as I philosophized with so much of Dostoevsky's, Camus's Kafkas, Hesse's, Platos, and almost all other classicist Dostoevsky still remains more inciteful and will perhaps be more read in time than the horrific legacies as outlined so poorly in the biblia.
Crime and Punishment was the only book I read by Dostoevsky. I happened upon it at 17 when I was thinking the only solution to people like my mother was to kill her. Dostoevsky's book changed mind.
This also shows a problem with Christianity, in terms of taking responsibility away from us to do good and live well and putting it solely in faith or God. It’s good to have faith but I believe in looking or reflecting on our own actions and the world; taking in as much knowledge as possible in order to live a truly good life. We can do much more than just praying.
ThankU!! Yikes....eeek 🎃👻 Never read The Gambler. As one afflicted with OCD/addiction (but not that one), I stopped calling this a disease, as that word implies something curable. It's a condition, embedded at a neurological level. Where willpower is feeble, and choice is limited. Some therapists urge us to live in defiance of negative core beliefs. I found it necessary to apply that judiciously, with delicacy. The demons don't like success or progress. Sometimes demon backlash is triggered, which can invite relapse. Easy does it. Words about hope to me are poignant. I fired hope. Hope misleads me. I have faith that even without hope life can be beautiful & meaningful. Maybe that's sad. But it's practical My Buddhist friend says hope can equal "grasping" I imagine you read Dostoevsky's short story A Disgraceful Affair. OMFG story of my life. Perhaps some day you'll speak on it
The captions are kind of annoying if they are in the video. Is there a reason for putting it in the video if someone can just enable/disable it from the settings?
I wonder how psychology would advise one how to proceed (pursue a good life). Are we over thinking life? Are we really just (sophisticated?) apes living the life of an ape (survive, dominate & pricreate)? Maybe we should just play the game (submit, conform & embrace the hedonic treadmill).
Was part of a chain gang. Later he has gambling debts. Gains respect, freedom and pays debts by writing a book about being enslaved by gambling. Now that's inspiring, making lemonade when life gives you lemons.
RAHHHHHH ANOTHER UNSOLICITED ADVICE DROP!!!! I have to ask though, how is it possible for you to create such high quality- long form content so consistently? Many other channels take months to make videos you make almost weekly?
What's odd is that Dostoevsky is seen very differently at "home" and abroad. Outside of Russia, he is venerated as a literary saint; Russians, though, tend to see him as a nutcase. Maybe because he wrote about things that transcended his homeland?
Tell me something about the novel, The mayor of the caster bridge", the first page of this novel says ,that LIFE IS NOTHING BUT FULL OF MISERY..HAPPINESS IS JUST AN OCCASIONAL EPISODE WHICH WILL BE COMING SHORTLY IN OUR LIFE " . After the publication of his novel, Jude the obscure " Thomas hardy stopped writing novels bcoz people didn't tolerate the tragidy of his novels..What is where in that..Clarify and Justify it..sir.

And the will to never give up fundamentally will always be a glorious experience when the action is at hand. But depending on how it goes, you will either feel ecstasy or despair if your goal is to win. But if you do it solely for the journey, it doesn’t really matter if you win or lose.
Great!
Great video as always!
Thank you! That’s very kind
Replace gambling with gardening and all your philosophical problems will solve themselves
A walk in the woods does it for me
@@mikewalker8956 I love walking through the woods when it is raining
What do u mean? By replace gambling with gardening? I do both….
@@Mr.Storytime959
Gardening is gambling. Hail storms knock your buds off, late frost kills your tomatoes, hornets eat your blackberries,,,,,,
Planting seeds is rolling the dice.
@@Mr.Storytime959 Replacing a destructive addiction with a rewarding activity for mind and body. I personally find that it helps to clear the mind and generate purposefulness.
Excellent ❤
Nice video. Can you make video about The Double by Dostoyevsky? I was very confused by the ending of the book.
so good
I'm a recovering alcoholic and in AA I've heard people call that sort of pride being "terminally unique." Someone who views themselves as terminally unique thinks that they're alcoholism is so uniquely bad, or so different in some way from all those other alcoholics who managed to stop drinking, that they are beyond redemption, that they will never be able to get help or improve themselves. Even though it appears, on the surface of it, to be self-deprecating, it can be an intoxicating (pun intended) mindset to adopt.
i really like your videos and the way you explain things. can you please make a video on the novel "the idiot"
🍓 Any post-ruined life philosophical advice? Would love to see a video on the subject. 🧸🎀
Cheers from New York! 🍓
We support light gambling (for educational purposes ofc)😋

No one is too far gone, and Christ came to redeem us back to God
How about a podcast on pragmatism especially Rorty.
St.Porphyrios said if one is depressed, there is a great ego.
That’s the church distortion of Christianity
Orthodoxy doesn't do that.
But it's practical
My Buddhist friend says hope can equal "grasping"
I imagine you read Dostoevsky's short story A Disgraceful Affair. OMFG story of my life. Perhaps some day you'll speak on it
The captions are kind of annoying if they are in the video. Is there a reason for putting it in the video if someone can just enable/disable it from the settings?
He who possesseth little is so much the less possessed: blessed be moderate poverty!

LETS GO GAMBLING!
What's odd is that Dostoevsky is seen very differently at "home" and abroad. Outside of Russia, he is venerated as a literary saint; Russians, though, tend to see him as a nutcase. Maybe because he wrote about things that transcended his homeland?
Maybe because virgins don't give birth?
Tell me something about the novel, The mayor of the caster bridge", the first page of this novel says ,that LIFE IS NOTHING BUT FULL OF MISERY..HAPPINESS IS JUST AN OCCASIONAL EPISODE WHICH WILL BE COMING SHORTLY IN OUR LIFE " . After the publication of his novel, Jude the obscure " Thomas hardy stopped writing novels bcoz people didn't tolerate the tragidy of his novels..What is where in that..Clarify and Justify it..sir.

10:30 - But couldn’t Alexey have possibly found happiness, at least momentarily if Paulina had accepted his money and therein his love for her instead of letting her ego close herself off. Would that not have served as enough of a blocker [hypothetically] to stop Alexey’s fall into depeavity
Since you are an Atheist what do you have say about Machiavellianism, do you believe we live in a Machiavellian world
I believe he has uploaded stuff about machiavelli
@@lunarmoon4596 Indeed he did but I want know that does he believe that we live in a Machiavellian world
@@inshalkhan3138 well the answer is obvious
we don't
world is too vast to be comprised in just machiavelli
some parts are yes
while others hedonistic
some are full on anti social in all 3 aspects
& some are good
If you don't have the bad you won't know what good is and the same vice versa the world still goes around means that there is still good around
Good and bad both cannot exist without the other you can never have a world that is all good and you can never have a world that is all bad in that sense analysing his takes on classic literature and his own personal philosophy it can easily be summed up that he doesn't think we live in a machiavelli world
If you think hard enough it's quite easy to figure out but yes the topic it can make for a good video
