STOP COMPLAINING! Pin Squats Vs. Paused Squats

- In this video, Joey Szatmary and Alan Thrall lift at Untamed Strength gym in Sacramento, CA. They discuss their distaste for members who complain about the gym being hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
Their workout consists of touch and go bench press and pin squats. This raises the question, "What's the difference between paused squats and pin squats?"

From the gym being too hot?
See! Ac or a fan for the love of God!!!!
Sounds like a whole lot of complaining about people complaining about the heat
Here's my take on it fwiw. I've been to Untamed and compared to my home gym (which I don't go to anymore in favor of a garage gym) it's cleaner, better organized, and generally cared for better. He has great equipment and constantly tries to improve what he has to offer. If you've watched his videos, Alan doesn't have a staff to clean or run the place. I think he generally cares about the members. And yet they leave his bathroom filthy, break holes in walls, and use equipment in ways it wasn't meant to be used. So kind of like a family, you love them but they irritate the shit out of you. They are paying Alan, but he ain't making money hand over fist so he has to put up with it somewhat. So, here, he's kind of venting a little.
And now you're complaining about Alan complaining.
And now I'm complaining about you complaining about Alan complaining. God damn it
@@cranki6316 "venting" heh.

Complaining about not having a/c to the owner does actually serve an obvious purpose
Now I want to visit Untamed Strength solely to complain about the heat.
Me too 😐
working a 10hr day in the heat and then kicking a 2 hr sesh in more heat is gonna be very motivating this summer
One punch man trained without AC and he turned out pretty well
He didnt have a gym either
The train without AC is one thing, but the slepping without it... That's the ticket.
Apparently my gym playlist is what is playing at Untamed Strength by default.
Woah, I didn't expect to find someone of such PoE fame here
One video complaining about people complaining... interesting
My gym is outdoor in the UK. Doesn’t get too hot but bloody hell its tough when it snows!
Outdoor gym in Australia here. It gets bloody hot.
@@menemai I live in the Lower valley of Texas and in summer it get to 115 F... that's how cold It gets..
Hanging on to the barbell or the pullup bar when your hands are numb from the cold is rough. Not to mention the extra 10-15 minutes it takes to warm up.
@@menemai Damn right. I live in North Queensland and our weather here is about the same as where Alan is at the moment. The kids were complaining about being cold when I dropped them off at school this morning. It was 19 degrees C.
Adam Snook OHP with a frosty barbell is the best. You haven’t lived until you’ve done that and had the icy brushed beard to prove it
Heat is fine. I am guilty of bitching about the cold. But i work out at home so no one hears me whining
If the gym's already hot, there's no need to warm up.
Saves time.
Warming up is not so your muscles can get warmer.
It's to raise your heart rate so more oxygen can be delivered to the muscles so they don't have to rely on glycolysis and lactic acid fermentation for ATP.
If you warm up well (5-10 mins), you will have more long term energy for the workout.
TheLastScampi
The actual temperature helps your enzymatic reactions, but it’s not the main point nor is it necessary. If you get that blood and oxygen flow going and the TCA cycle going, then you’re pretty good as you’ll keep getting ATP. Otherwise people wouldn’t be able to work out in the cold.
@@zzzzzzzzzz098 Yeah dude... you're not invited to my quinceañera.
@@automaticninjaassaultcat3703 You're talking about cooling down, not really warming up. Explanation below.
Vasodilation does not work that way. When warming up, the lower concentration of oxygen in your muscles will trigger a lot of cascades that will release vasodilators. Temperature can vasoconstrict, but it doesn't override those vasodilators. This is what makes it possible to warm up in the cold.
As for temperature during warming up, the act of moving your muscles will generate heat, the laws of thermodynamics support this. When you are warmed up, you are going to be warm, but if you're warm, you're not necessarily warmed up. Our intended effect is that we want to be warmed up and with it, you will be warm like buy one get one free. So you have two situations:
1) Working out when it's cold, and it will take you longer to warm up. Once the oxygen level dips, vasodilators are secreted to increase blood flow, and more things happen but once warmed up (blood flow and oxygen requirements are met) then you will be warm because your body is generating heat.
2) Working out when it's warm: your body is warm, vasodilation is already in place, so you will be warmed up faster.
I'd rather have chalk than A/C
I'm sorry you have to choose, lol.
I rather not have chalk. But I can manage without AC as well. Especially when I see chalk being used for back loaded squats.
Dude, I’m about to move to Cali to train at untamed. I’m one of the few people that love to train in the heat and sweat like crazy. Keep up the good work and tell people they’re burning more calories. And remind them that they should be thankful because the Middle East in full uniform is preeeetttyyy unforgiving.
I'm gonna need a spotify playlist of Alan's heavy metal
Yeah! The iron plates clanging together reminds me of the good old days before 24 Hour Fitness became popular and way before Crossfit.
Aye Zillakami playing in the background🔥
No ac wouldn’t fly on the east coast with our crazy humidity
Always feels hotter than it is just cause of the humidity. 90 feels like 70 in Texas to me, and in PA 70 feels like 90 on a bad day.
Joey is from the east coast
The shear amount of swamp ass it would generate would cause the gym to be declared a protected wetland.
I've been to a gym with no ac on the east coast, was a member for 5 or so months until I moved and it was the best gym in the area. Shit was miserably hot but no where else had powerlifting equipment anywhere near me.
I was waiting for the "I can't afford it" moment. People think being popular on the tube translates to unlimited cash-buckaroni's
Already have the AC on at the gym I go to. Mostly because of the 95-100% humidity. I’d have waited until it was a little warmer, but we had nothing but leaves blowing into the gym with the doors open :( owner doesn’t like a messy gym, and I totally agree.
I mean perhaps not an AC but you could score an industrial fan that uses a fraction of the electricity to keep the air circulating. Could be a trade off.
Could you imagine if Martins came and worked out with you. He would probably have the audacity to sweat everywhere
The only AC I want in a gym is when it's followed by DC.
I'm not saying that it's hot. But there were just 2 hobbits throwing a ring into the gym.
Training in the heat is FAR MORE challenging. I specifically chose to switch gyms locally and get to a place without AC. Yes it was tough, but over time I've built up a lot of stamina. Body can get through a lot of work during the colder periods. Rest times have also drastically reduced. Win-win.
Training in the heat seems especially useful for those who compete in strongman.
Solution: train naked in the heat and wearing a parka in the cold
I think it depends on the person but training in an environment that's too hot is the reason I left a gym because, my body was using too many calories/energy to stay cool. it seriously got in the way of my gains and progress. It made concentrating which is essential almost impossible. When I stopped going to said gym my gains increased dramatically so Alan I would find a way to make it cooler before it costs you a lot more by losing clients.
Love that you have those flags up. And you're absolutely right about working out early.
Keep up the great work on your channel, I love your videos!
What would the heat in the gym rate on the RPE chart?
RPE 1000 of course 💁🏼♀️
Marc Stuart rpe ‘macaroni and cheese but you haven’t let it cool down yet’
Hot/10
The gym where I go has air conditioning
Last time I went in there when it was so hot and I was on low carbs high protein diet
My god 5 minute warm up I look like I went for a swim through a lake and because of my asthma I look like a drunk every alcohol drink going as my cheeks was so red
Yes I did complain about the heat but I just carried on
Then collapsed on the gym floor when I finished
It's awesome you have Piros Dimas on the wall behind your squat rack. A living legend! Good for you that you know of him.
heat complaints->gym ban/house ban
No AC/DC (no air conditioning/don’t care)
Being from the uk, I dont have this problem, its the rain we have to worry about.
Complain Untamed!
I feel the same way, but with the cold here in Michigan, in my garage with no heat. Complaining doesn't help. Keep up the good work gentlemen! Love the vids.
Song at 1:09?
Did not see the zillakami coming. Niceee
Visit Texas in the summer
I prefer a hot gym to a cold one. My body seems to work better for exercising in a hot environment.
People who complain about AC never understand the importance of gym environment and motivated/stronger people around. Do a session in a flashy commercial gym and suddenly the AC becomes the least important. I didn't get a visa because the embassy didn't believe I just wanted to Train Untamed.
joey's intro instantly gave me squat cravings
He reminds me of Stiffler. 😂
The commercial gym I go to is too hot in winter and too cold in summer. Guess that's why it takes them forever to fix anything cause they wasted their money on utilities.
Here in Finland it's around 5 celcius in my garage gym. Wanna trade climates?

Back in the day 1984 I used to wear sweats in the middle of the summer working out at Woodys gym
In the Marine Corp 29 palms I used rocks for pillows.

I mean, people say stuff like that just to make small talk. No need to be sensitive about it.
Yo what’s the song at 2:03?
Great music in the gym. This morning I lifted to 90's freestyle.
Does anyone have problem with their powerlifting belt. When I am squatting it pinches my skin through the t shirt and I get hematoma. Usually it is not a problem, but when I work my heavier sets it can be very uncomfortable feeling.
The holes for the pins in the squat rack in my gym are pretty far apart, so if i'm doing pinsquats i have to choose between a litlle high or way to low (buttwink area for me). Which option should I go for?
So people passing out from the heat mid squat is okay to you?
"I walk around in the summertime saying 'How about this heat.'"
OK David Leary hahaha
OK David Leary hahaha
With Alan AND Joey in the gym, of course it’s going to be hot
so what happens if someone is training and passes out from heat exhaustion ? is that on the owner of the gym or the person who passed out cause it was too hot ? Im asking for a friend.
Ayyyyy I hear Parkway Drive in the background 👌🏻 I still have to swing by your gym, I work at Cal Fit in Rocklin!
I was pretty stoked to hear them jamming that too🤘
When I was stationed in Hawaii I thought the same thing about the heat but I learned to love it. I was always warm, the muscles were loose, it was great.
Alan, it is now time for you to put on a strong man contest. Get your date and location set, get your sponsors, get your UNTAMED STRENGTH tshirts ready, invite some celebrities, get your friends to help!!! and make it happen!!! You can do it! once a year! Make some money from it to get your own building.
Man im the kinda guy that wraps up even in summer to get the extra sweat on i love that little challenge feels like an extra drain

"One man is much the same as another, and he is best who was trained in the severest school."
I personally hate to train in a hot gym. But i wouldn't complain about it. Either you come in very early or very late so it's cool, or alternatively you can take your mone elsewhere.
only thing i hate is when the gym has cold AC and ceiling fans... i wanna sweat not freeze my ass off
I’m in Hawaii and it’s hot and humid here. 90° by 8 am humid, no way to avoid it. But embracing it feels a lot better than trying to fight it!
I'm all for not complaining, but a possible compromise is a couple well placed fans. I like getting hot in my gym and LOVE earning my break in front of the fan, especially once I start to look like a sweaty human beet. Course assault bikes and rowing machines have pretty sweet fan action too.
A few fans here and there are enough to keep me comfortable. I don't like a gym with the A/C cranked. I want to stay warmed up, a little air movement to take the edge off.
Also like gyms that play good music....very hard to find where I live. Cheers
Alan i wanna do Pin Squat, but in the city that i live, every Gym is a Comertial gym, nobody have Power Rack.
What can i do to make pin squat without a power rack?, please
Same to Pin Press
In finland you have to have AC in every gym. So we got that going for us.
My gym is always freezing cold and I hate it. The heat is good for your joints and builds character
does it make any difference if you use pins or straps for the pin squats?

Does it ever get above 95F with high humidity around Untamed Strength and at what temp would you actually close the gym to keep people from working out in heat that was dangerous to train in?
Lmfao what do we want? AC, when do we want it? Now. I'm fucking dead.
Do not miss field day. At all. *hugs dd214*
How hot is california when its summer?
I wonder if they'd have AC in their gym if it were offered 100% free to them. If you have a gym without AC it's unreasonable to think people arent going to complain about it....complaining about their complaints is just as odd as the original complaint.
That said, I do workout in the heat of Houston because I dont want to outfit an AC system due to the cost. I get it, but its certainly not a right of passage or anything....most, if not all, would rather workout balls to the wall hard in a climate controlled environment all else being equal.
Of course they would lol..
As long as it’s not cold don’t complain your muscles are warm
Tbh, I'm sick af of my commercial pretty boy gym. I want a dungeon/ warehouse/ dusty garage type environment so bad. I just can't found a gym like that
On my last trip to Colombia, I trained at a few crazy hot places, one was called Sweat Gym (in Cali) and my word that was deadly. But it was great, other than dripping to death upon entry to the gym. I felt like I recovered a lot quicker out there between workouts than I do in the UK in winter. Could just be me though.
Then when I got home to the UK I trained one day at Martyn Ford's gym at the trainer there said he much prefers a hot gym, and honestly it does feel better to a degree. But if it's cold, then whatever ... just some more warm ups or the hood goes up between sets. It's all part of the fun.
I wonder if heat has a big effect on strength training overall, whether for faster workouts, hypertrophy etc or not... not sure.
I'm still gonna complain a bit. I train in a gym in a warehouse like this, but instead of heat, we have to deal with the cold. Winters in Norway get pretty cold, and basically no heating in the warehouse. So we had to train in sub zero temperatures this winter. Basically our hands were stuck to the deadlift bar. We didn't have to worry about grip though, so that was something. Anyway, we pushed through it, and complaining certainly helped us. On a more serious note, we probably got stronger because of it
How much for a one day training at your gym?
I train in a gym with no A/C, it has heating but rarely if ever on in the winter.
Tip, in the summer, train hard.
In the winter, train HARDER!!
City morgue in a gym playlist....dream
Anybody know the song at 5:55?
Locust - Machine Head iirc
At 1:45, for one moment I was certain that discussion would end with ''Have you not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard''
I don't understand people complaining about heat while working out, that's my preferred time to work out. The more sweat, the better. I always make time for a good run outside when it gets around 100 degrees.
I'd much rather train hot than cold. Get comfortable feeling uncomfortable.
Can somebody help.. the bar slips down when going heavy (for me) on low bar squat
Maybe the bar is too low on your back, or you stay too upright
@@Uolverino7036 I always start with the bar on the traps then i slide it down to the rear delts to keep a tight upper back.. as for my body lean its not really that upright (it's hard to look up) i always look a few feet away from me ... the bar starts slipping on the bottom of the rep .. I'm considering taking a full grip (thumbs around) but I'm afraid the load of the bar will be on my wrists .. any advice on that?
@@hussainium6140 maybe you should narrow your grip and trying to place the barbell directly on your rear delts instead of rolling it down afterward. It could also be a way to work on your shoulders and wrists mobility
@@Uolverino7036 Thanks I will try that next time .... I don't think its a shoulder mobility thing .. my grip width is just like my bench press grip width.. but i can get my hand very narrow to the point that they are as narrow as my close grip bench (the beginning of the knurling).. but I don't remember where I read it exactly I think it was an article by mark rippetoe.. that the narrower you go the more unbalanced you're gonna feel
@@hussainium6140 Did you work it out eventually?
I actually prefer warmer gyms for 2 reasons. 1) it gets my body more warmed up for lifts. 2) it takes me back to high school where the only ac the weight room had was opening the doors and putting fans facing in. Keeps me going and makes the sweat worth it
What song is playing at 2:00
Wish I lived over there man, anything over 25 c is considered a heatwave in England :-/
Wow. Putting your own gym members on blast in your video. They should of known better😂😂
Man Sacramento isn’t that hot compared to over here in GA, are humidity isn’t fucking terrible.
What's the actual temperature?
It's getting cold down here in Australia, you guys have no idea how grateful you should be for the heat, It's not comfortable training in a jumper
Buckets of ice, job done
Ayyye City Morgue though. Good shit.
Gizmo too? I need to come to your gym.
If i couldn't afford AC i would just buy like 20 large floor fans and place them around the building.
at least yall have roll-up doors. My gym is hot as balls with now windows or fans lol
I feel like I SUFFER more in the heat every year. Its freaking rough. That being said complaining about it doesn't do me any good. Still one of my favorite hours of the day.
It snowed in Minnesota today, so I'd appreciate a little HEAT.
