I don't come for the board, as much as I am interested by it, I come for the relatable, charismatic host. keep it up man, you make a period of my day easier every time one of your videos goes up.
I was right near your store the other day.. I was going to stop īn but i am sure you have more important things to do lol. old school tech here love the vids.. I thought logical troubleshooting was long gone.
Board level repair is beyond a lot of small shops. And I think you provide a fairly valuable service.
I watch your videos because I like fixing things and watching the process of finding the issue and fixing it makes me happy.
Half the time I have no idea what you are talking about in these videos, but still find myself fascinated and WISHING I knew. What you do is like an art form that needs to be kept alive because not enough people know how tondo what you're doing, case in point, myself
Thank you Louis, every one of these videos is worth so much in terms of knowledge.
I'm PC forever, but my wife wont leave Apple. Just the beginning of this video saved quite a bit of money. THANK YOU! My wife has a Macbook Pro and I tried the flashlight way, like you did at the beginning of the video, and was able to see the log on items, which allowed us to log on. Thank you again!
I really love watching your videos because there's lots to learn about repairs
Dude I love this attitude, its like you got up this morning and just was like im going to eat these technicians for breakfast.
Congrats on the increase of your subscribers, I started following you a year ago and as a business owner myself, its great to follow someone who goes through a similar day to day as myself. Keep up the good work.
+sidesho229 thanks for watching!
it is not always that fault !! This time the chip worked its signals well but the supply voltage to the backlight was 21 volts, and the solution was just to reball the chip and with that it worked again, delivering 26 volts for the backlight to work. thanks for the video !!
you do this so effortlessly, like a magician, I am very impressed.....
as a consumer thanks for the info and tutorial. I know what to expect when i take it in for repair.👍
Not bored at all :) thank you for doing this videos, for hobbyists like me, u are the ultimate teacher, can never get bored!
Obrigado from Portugal!
Thank to your videos, I was able to figure out what was broken in my phone with no back light, broken charge pump chip. I wasn't able to fix it tho, because of lack of appropriate tools and parts. Knowledge, that I could repair is satisfying tho:)
KEEP DOING THE INSPIRING WORK AND I WISH I COULD FIND TIME TO LEARN. YOUR INSPIRING WORK IS ADMIRABLE TO MANY.
You save million of people's money...
And generate new ideas to the world.
Hi Louis.
I know you are buys, but I will give it a shot anyway.
I have an imac 2011 27". Two weeks after replacing the HDD with an SSD the screen started going black when booting it.
If I connect an external screen, I can see the extended desktop, I can move the mouse to this desktop and I can (patiently) guide my mouse to the login button on the main screen (which is black) and have it log in. If I remove the glass and shine an iphone flashlight at the screen, I am not able to see the image when it is black.
If I then open the display settings on the extended screen and turn on "mirror screen", sometimes it triggers the black imac LCD to turn on. Sometimes I have to repeat the procedure a few times and/or wait a little.
Once I am succesful in getting it to turn on again, I can remove the external screen, reboot the faulty imac and it appears to work fine for the rest of the evening. If I put the screen in sleep mode and turn it back on, I see a little bit of flickering while it gets the backlight back on, but it turns on and seems to work.
However, the next day I am back to the black screen.
I have tried the following:
* Re-attaching all LCD cables.
* I put a new NVRAM battery in.
* I reset the NVRAM
* Reset SMC
* Started in safe mode, single user mode.
None of these actions seem to have helped.
Have you seen these symptoms before and what would you suggest the problem could be?
Thank you in advance, :)
Anders.
Glad to see another Mac fixed. Sorry to see your so board doing this. This might sound stupid but maybe there's a way you can make a game of it to keep your mind stimulated.
Thank you for this insite, which means I am going to take this to someone else to do the job and direct them to the video. I am not that good, and no I do not want to have you make repairs for me, although I would feel safer. Thank you again.
I forgot how much better your videos sound when you edit the audio tracks when your fume extractor is on. Coming from the "My channel's youngest viewer brings in a board" video
$650 mic next to mouth beats $70 lavalier
Greeting Louis. Thank you for the demonstration. I am a rookie at this but analytical. In this video could you tell me what temperature you specifically use with your hot air gun, and air flow speed you used to reball. Secondly, if I need to replace my back-light chip (after testing power flow to it), could I pull a back-light chip off any laptop (provided the chip number is the same)? Thanks again for you services.
The sound quality in this one is better than wireless one. So please keep this
Louis, you should compare this video, to the videos you did like 10 years ago. When you first started the channel you normally used liters of flux, and normally had an ocean on the board. Today you used the perfect amount of flux.
I also noticed that a schematic was used.
Awesome video Louis!
Louis Rossmann - GREAT Video and You Being Yourself is Great live by Advise! HELP!! Can you tell me what steps I should take to troubleshoot a MacBook Pro 13 inch that has non-adjusting backlight Screen Display issues? The Backlight is always "Full ON" at it's highest display or nothing at all, when trying to adjust it to a lower setting? Is it a Setting within the device or is it going to be a Similar Chip replacement like with this video?
Boring but valid to this day ^^
just got another A1278 (820-3115-B) board back up and running. Blown fuse (jup, I was surprised too) and a bad LP8550.
These videos make me want to buy broken laptops and fix them, which is a terrible idea.
IT tech here.. its 2020 and we're still here.
Now I know board repair too though :)
People are not throwing things away like they used to either though. Throw away culture has been met with eco-culture.
Louis, your doing great stuff mate! Have you ever thought of live streaming your entire workday?(or even a few hours of?) might take some planning preparation to remove anything you don’t want seen but it would
be great to come online and see Louis at work and tune into (or load) a stream of you doing your everyday work stuff. twitch, youtube, periscope, perhaps even facebook, its something I would definitely be keen to watch! you could also cultivate a cult following and be able receive comments as your working on boards and discussing things!
You're the man
Ps: I'm watching in Morocco and it's 5:41 a.m
Hi, after opening my mbp and seeing how small everything is inside I’m truly amazed by your talent. Wow. I don’t think I can endeavor to replace my back light fuse. Can you tell me if there is a part I can replace that doesn’t require soldering? Would it be the logic board or the display??? Thanks!
I can imagine an apple worker watching this video while taking breakfast
Apple workers don't give a shit about fixing computers, if they had to learn to really fix them instead of just replacing boards they'd either have no job because it gets sent overseas or quit because they don't want to learn smd component soldering and probably don't make enough to.
Hi Louis thanks again for your educational videos. I was inspired by your explanation of MB reparations and how you troubleshoot problems. I was actually able to resurrect =) an old 2006 macbook white.
I have two questions -
Once you told that there were certain years when Macbook pro's 13'' and 15'' were made with decent quality.. Was it 2012 or 2013 ? I would like to get a retina 13" model for my wife who is a photographer.
And second - how thick is the wire that you use to connect elements on the logic boards ? 0,3 mm ?
Where's the ms paint schematics Louis? I was looking forward to them
Really old video from his backlog. You can recognize the delayed ones from the text "welcome you to landrex test link" in the crappy old board view software.
Look at the date in the title: this is from the 28th of March, long before "some company" started complaining.
Hey ms paint is a great application! I use it for all my 3D work.
if he sets the date on his computer to 4 months ago or whatever and just records them as if they are old he can just keep using the schematics.
Louis = fucken legend! That phone torch on apple logo saved my ass. Thanks!!
@Louis Rossmann Totally offtopic, but do you have any suggestions on 3rd party Macbook Batteries? Could use one for a 15" MBP 2010. Model is considered vintage, so no more originals. I'd go with Anker or OWC stuff (both curiously don't seem to ship to Germany), or do you have a better supplier?
Something that is getting more complicated more expensive is electronic kids and adult devices and toys. Like drones 3D printers. They are going to be the next big repair items besides phones.
Is there any forum or something to discuss fixing boards? I'm trying to find out whats wrong with a Air 1237 early 2008 but there is no schematics for it. All the schematics I found for other models shows a 18.5V power through DC-Jack but mine is 14,5V. Display has no image or backlight. I've read louis material but I couldn't find the problem.
Try reddit
so cool :) would that be the same chip faulty if my macbook pro 2012 loosing backlight after couple minutes of work ? There is picture on LCD all the time , after that . There is no backlight only. However after restart and when Macbook gets cold it's starting again as normal , with backlights on . And over and over , the same story - getting warmer backlight turns off , getiing in sleep mode and woken up after a time backlight comes back for another couple of minutes . And how much to repair it with you ? Cheers
how do you approach intermittent problems? I know some failure modes can be problematic to diagnose, will we have the pleasure of seeing such a video?
+Louis Rossmann Nice Job! well explained. You Repair only Apple Products or other Brands ?
Hi, I have MBP 13' 2017 touchbar model, the touchbar broken and teared off and there is no backlight on the display? I'm waiting new touchbar to come over, so I'm guessing does the broken touchbar can be the cause of no backlight? I checked the display settings and manually changed the brightness level and turned on auto-brightness, but in the system report-displays I see this: Automatically Adjust Brightness: No. Thats why I assume backlight issue related to the broken touchbar, hopefully you will answer to this question, thanks.
Hi Louis, I'm having the same issue with my Macbook Pro late 2013, backlight's gone because I spilled a drop of water at the bottom of the screen which immediately rolled down and got maybe a) inside the black bar that's below the screen or/and b) one of the fan orifices, it then started flickering till the backlight was gone, but theres picture and I'm even using it right now to type this while connected to an external monitor, but I just wanted to know what do you think would be the best way to go, by your experience of course. Thank you so much, subscribed!
Good job guy!
Based on previous videos, I'm guessing there's a blown fuse near the chip? (Big letter P on the component). Just wondering what that would be for and why (if it is a blown component) it still works.
Thanks for your videos, always enjoy them.
Hi sorry Im a bit late here but I have a question what would happen on this board to the U9701 chip, if the U5400 chip was replaced and put on the wrong way?
thank you bro very much you are a Legend!!
Nice
Did you call tech support for the broken wireless microphone transmitter? Pro audio equipment is covered by at minimum a 1 year warranty.
I don't know about you but I hate talking to tech support. Even when they're really nice it's still a major 45 + minute inconvenience. Gives me a migraine just thinking about it. (To be fair I get those several times a day. They still don't know whats wrong with me so for now I just avoid triggers.)
+Snorburter Nazi used crap that I bought off of eBay!
+TheTarrMan I know exactly what you mean. As an AV service technician, I spend a great deal of time talking to tech support for a variety of different companies. Thankfully, after you call them often enough to build up a rapport, they'll usually cut the crap and give an RMA within the first few minutes since they know that you know what they're doing.
Thganks again
Hi Louis I have a MacBook Pro late 2016 (TouchBar) Laptop, it doesn't (Display) turn on instantly....theres a lag/hang before it turns on...only top bar will be visible when we turn on and it only works in some particular angles if the angle is changed the backlit goes off. can you suggest someting here.
bro great video i have a vaio fit 15a my back light died after a screen replacement but i cant find the fuse there are two fuses i suspect i tryed the f 17 but not the f 18 they both well away from the screen connector
You are showing schematics in this video. Is that because this is an old recording, or because of some clarity on the whole schematic thing?
from taskbar i filmed this on 3/12, from title that i forgot to edit out i uploaded it for 3/28, but upload probably failed which is why i am reuploading it today
ah, thank you, I really appreciate the response.
Can I buy you a beer if I'm ever in NY?
+Rookz He doesn't drink anymore sadly
Just need help. My mac book air display is given problems. I am very sure that it is fine and there was no physical force to it. I do believe that it is due to some moisture. Every time i open it the display shows some vertical or horizontal lines. Some time it shows as if it is in very high contrast. Every time I open it the pattern of display varies. Sometime it is working fine. When the display is bad I use a hair dryer and focus it around the track pad area. Then it gets alright. Can you please tell what is the problem and how to solve it ? Thanks in advance.
great !!! same problem with same solution i like your videos :)
nice aeron
It's 2022 and I just got back a no backlight mbp as "unfixable" from the only official apple repair shop in the country.
DO you do CPU's? i went to delid my processor and i believe i broke off a cap or two, i've watched a bunch of your vids and would like to have you fix it, if so please PM contact info thanks!
louis my cat ate some flux, at first i was really worried but he seems to really like it.
do you know if pet smart will sell me it in bulk?
LED driver gets 5V, PWM sending signal, how you apart from experience would know to replace driver?
"Why repair?" Pro environment/preservation people might like the idea of repairing and upgrading rather than throwing away and rebuying. Especially considering where a lot of electronical thrash has turned up in the last decade. (There are videos of poor areas being flooded with such trash, and then extracting some of the raw material by openly burning it all in the hopes of making some measly scraps, which is not a clean way of disposal).
There's a point in designing devices that are built to last, be repairable and up-gradable. I do believe there's a market for it. And even if the market isn't there or big enough, i don't feel we should ignore the path of legislation to move in that direction.
Okaay when I put a very bright light on the macbook I see the screen! What is this problem?
Taattie yes please I have the same problem
Hi. I have a A1425 with no backlight issue. There is a picture on the screen when I use a flash light on apple logo. Have measured the voltage @ Pin1 on LCD connector, it is high as 54,5V. How to proceed? Appreciate your help, thanks.
I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) which has no backlight or display but can be used externally also changed the display but no luck. Any idea to what could be causing this?
thumbs up for for being cheap (/not buyings things you don't need)
What would be likely to be failing. i had 12V at output, changed the led driver, now i have 5V at output.
I am looking for cause but can't find anything.
Thanks in advance for any help.
you the man as always
Hi, I exchanged the display. After it doesn't turn on. No charging light any more. SMC reset doesn't work. Any ideas? With old broken screen it works.
Hi Louis, my macbook pro 13 a1502 has an intermittent backlight, i have replaced the connector and the backlight ic on the board but still the same issue. any idea on what else it could be?
Appreciate the help
0 dislikes that what *I LIKE TO SEE!!*
Hello i wated to ask what is the software youre using for schemes? (sory if its explained in some older video i probably didn't catch it)
+Jovan Pavlovic Sumatra pdf
Feels like i'm missing something. Do you just use the solder that remained on the chip from it's previous board? What if there isn't enough solder on the chip?
+Gg Tt the chip comes with balls
What does it mean if you get no caps lock light? Machine responds to SMC and PRAM resets, and chimes, fans spin up, but nothing after that . I have tried booting with battery disconnected and with SSD removed, neither helped. Machine was working fine yesterday and today wouldn't boot. 2012 Retina 15"
Thanks for teaching us ❤❤❤ I subscribe you a milion
Hello. I have a problem with Macbook Air 13 inch 2013 logicboard life Apple logo on the back is also alive but there is no display on the LCD screen. can you help the problem where thank you
Seems this is what's happening to my macbook. I changed the LCD (purchased a used on on eBay) and still the same thing. I can see the login screen by putting a flashlight thru the Apple logo in the back. So I'm screwed cause I'm not a repair shop.
do you have a "no backlight" video for Lenovo 100 15ibd? I have picture. the screen is new. it maybe the cable. idk.
Hey Louis Rossmann i got a mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina with a flickering screen want to repair it for my self and advice on going about doing this repair?
+michael badal too little info to do anything with this
micheal badel; Use what Louis had taught us; he has already dispensed all the advice you should need.
My helpful thoughts:. Be a good detective and use the process of elimination.
Find out is the fault in the a) display asm (bad back-light) B) in the cable (bad cable/connections) or c) on the board (is back-light voltage steady at the lvds connector or jumping allover the place causing the backlight to flicker).
once you have eliminated all but a few suspects you will know where to go next.
thanks a lot guys this helped me a lot.
Can i use components from other macbook versions?
I had a TV VCR repair business and got out in 2000 because of the very same issue. You will have to get into electric car repair, that's where the money will be.
louis, have you ever assessed the Yellow light of death on the Old PS3's? I think you'd have great input on that, since the original PS3's are built like shit and they break all the time.
I can barely keep with the usual content that you put on your videos, and even though I always wait for the next to be uploaded. #CadaQuienUsaEstosVideosASuManera
How can I send you mine? I’m in Germany, and no computer places will do this, and tell me it’s the screen. I can HDMI everything and I get camera for FaceTime.
I have one, but it turns on and does not give video, I take out the rams and I change them, I still do nothing ... the processor and the video chip are integrated
Why is your screen flipped at the start when showing the board layout/schematic
How much would it cost to have you either repair or replace the 8x optical superdrive in a 2007-2008 MacBook?
Do it yourself, that's just a parts replacement. You can probably buy the part off Amazon. Replacing parts like that is easy, doing what Louis does... not so much.
+Trypno I would never do that because there is no such thing as an optical drive for a computer that old that still actually works.
+Louis Rossmann The drive was working perfectly fine until a month ago
+Louis Rossmann It's alright though...I'm broke anyway, can't afford the repair, new computer, or part anyway, just thought I'd ask
So all the times it's the logic board.. sigh and I ordered a LCD for mine means I'll have to send it back and look a cheap board
I have a problem with my macbook pro retina mid 2014 model A1502 and i did a diagnostic on it and it says “There may be an issue with the display.” with a reference code of VFD002. my macbook works it’s just that the display turns off randomly and it glitches every so often. can you help me?
I am comander Shepard and this is my favorite store on the citadel
Joker...tell them...I should go.
Why do I feel that every body is clever here except me?!
You rock!
what if its a MacBook, witch doesn't have the white apple logo? How would you test if there was a picture?
I was watching another video and i read this Post
" The macbook will again overheat and again fail.
my suggestion in throw the apple products in the fucking bin and buy a windows laptop cheaper and you wont regret spending close to £1750. "
But i was totally shocked when i read the pesters name and it wasn't you Lois LOL
are there repair shops in 2016??? :o
Where can I get the chip?
My macbook pro doesn't lit the keyboard too, the capslock won't turn green when clicking it.
amazing
How many degree hot air tempreratur ?
