    Is 300 miles range enough in an electric car today?

      It's adequate as long as there's a decent charging network. In my experience, Electrify America and other public fast chargers are often out of service or have payment issues and can't be counted on. Also, you could have saved at least a half an hour if you had only charged to 80% the first time, and then made a second charging stop. No one ever charges to 100% on a road trip unless you're stopping for a full meal.

      @@anbuchinnappillai7763 How far are you going? That is what chargers are for. 300 miles is plenty and what most Tesla's have. I have a Model 3 LR 2021 and my 353 is more like 250-260 tops

      Barely. As a daily, that's fine but thinking of the M2 Comp that had poor range or an E60 M5, you always felt like refueling more than normal vs my M550i that could go 500 miles or as high as 550 miles once! With a 300 mile EV range, you'll be stopping to recharge on trips. Planning extended trips into the NC mountains would mean plotting charge stations along the way and hotels with charging available. Some areas don't have fuel stops let alone charge stations. Too much stress for me....

    I own an iX50 for 4 months now. In a mix drive (city, highway , country roads) I have average consumption of 19.0 Kw/100 km , this gives me a range of +/- 610 km = 379 miles with full battery. To preserve battery life I usually charge until 80%. Only when I have a long trip , then I charge to 100%.

    After daily driving three different i3s since 2014, I’ve found that using ACC anytime you’re on a highway is crucial to maximizing range. The computer always does a better job of speed vs. power usage than I can. I’ve also found that using the native BMW navigation provides more accurate range estimates than CarPlay. My understanding is that when BMW nav is engaged, iDrive can calculate the impact of elevation changes, etc. over the course of the entire route rather than reacting as it happens.

    Enjoyed the video. Interestingly enough both the EPA and BMW themselves claim ever-so-slightly higher efficiency on 22 inch rims compared to the 21s on your car. This is due to their aero shape and possibly weight. Quite odd but a possible benefit for anyone who loves their bling!

    Great review! I am very surprised with the highway mileage you were able to get with the iX M60. In reality, most people don't drive on the freeway every day for the entire charge. The majority of people drive in the city with all the stop-and-go, uphill, downhill, either the A/C or the heater is on, etc.. Do you happen to have the realistic everyday city mileage available?

    Put me on interstate 70 across Kansas in that iX 50 and I guarantee you I can squeeze 400 miles out of it. I got 35mpg in my 135i manual crossing Kansas (yes, I was only doing 57/58mph)

    One-pedal lets the driver decide exactly how much regen is needed (by modulating pedal position). Adaptive cruise (regen) let's the car decide how much is needed-it's what Tesla's Autopilot does (more or less - Autopilot also steers the car). p.s. Generally people DC fast-charge to no more than 80% because after that the charge rate drops precipitously. Spend much less time charging that way.

      Different vehicles. M5 is much more than 90k with options last time I checked. The iX is worth it since no premium fuel needed. You would spend $2500-3000 year on gas and only $600-1000 year to charge. That will add up

      I'd guess folks will compare it to the X5. At this time, I'd take the X5 M50i with 500hp, great styling and $90k-95k price tag. But then possibly regret the 20 mpg max. But that equates to a 400 mile range. To save money, the X5 40i is still quite nice.

      @@RichardinNC1 Good luck on the cost of gas over the life of the car. You will spend 10k more and also not get the 7500 federal tax credit here in the US and the fact you will spend hours of your life you will never get back at a gas station. Once you have an electric car you won't go back.

    Appreciate the video, but we got to get you up to speed on EV's. I was laughing when you compared the efficiency of a 5,500lb iX to a 4,200lb Model 3. Also, you could have charged to 90% and lowered the climate control and made that trip - you would have saved yourself the 30 minutes it took you to go from 90% to 100% battery charge. Not trying to be a jerk since I did appreciate the range details, but I am looking forward to picking up my white iX in Boulder, CO in a couple of weeks and seeing how efficient it is climbing large mountains in Colorado and how effective the regen is in putting power back into the battery going down a large mountain pass.

      @bmwblog  2 роки тому

      Appreciate the feedback. There are a lot of ways you can go about to increase or decrease the range. This test was meant to be a simple real life test, not trying to maximize the range. Think of this as a normal customer driving the car.

      @@bmwblog All good. My iX50 arrives in a couple of weeks, but I have been playing with iDrive in the demo at my local BMW dealership and while I feel the look and feel is overall pretty good, I am struggling with the navigation screens. I can't seem to get a more realistic look and feel to the iDrive map look by enabling a 3D real life view. We you able to figure this out? I am not a fan of the default map look I saw. Also, did you play around with the route planning functionality? I felt it has a lot of room for improvement since when planning a 750 mile road trip the vehicle only shows you the route, but not where to stop and how long to charge to optimize the trip. From what I saw on iDrive, the system shows nearby chargers where the vehicle is located, but not chargers around where you will be in 200 or 250 miles. Not sure if this is just me nitpicking, or current short comings in iDrive in the iX50.

    With EVs highway range is the only thing that matters. In everyday driving, you're not going to use enough range to deplete the battery before you get home at night to recharge. What matters is how far you can drive at highway speeds without having to stop to recharge. Ideally, you can go 350-400mi at highway speeds in almost any weather, at which point you will be able to do anything a gas car can do.

    • @bmwblog
      @bmwblog  2 роки тому

      It all depends on your charging situation. Not many people have the luxury to charge at home.

    Nico, Take a look at Tom Moloughney's excellent iX charging analysis: ua-cam.com/video/55UyAhUan3Y/v-deo.html It's often more efficient/quicker to make a couple of short charging stops rather than one long one, due to significantly faster charging when battery charge is low.

    • @bmwblog
      @bmwblog  2 роки тому

      There is no doubt that's the case, no surprise. But finding multiple fast charging stations along your route is challenging.

    300 miles isn’t possible in the Model 3 or Model Y. I’ve tested them over and over and over and over and over and never gotten over 265 miles of range on any of them and yes I own a Model Y - so I have tons of experiences with these long hauls and zero success with Tesla ever giving me the full expected range. I test drove one of these iX M50’s and they are light years ahead in tech and comfort compared to any and all of the Tesla Models. Sorry - nothing a Tesla fan boy will change the reality of the fact that this thing is indeed a Tesla killer. How about that Carbon Core😲🧐what about that adaptive suspension😲🧐take notes Tesla - your Model 3 and Model Y have the most Atrocious ride of any car on the road.

      Let’s face it, BMW knows how to make cars. Tesla makes batteries and tech and software. The car was a by product. I’ve driven both iX and Model 3, the 3 feels like a boat and drives as if it’s heavier than the iX. Tesla cars are good cars, but the price they charge doesn’t translate well with the ride quality and overall build quality and amenities of the vehicles.
