"...but quite frankly, that woman terrifies me"
I wouldn't be surprised. She's one of the reasons Warriors of the Deep happened in the way that it did.
Ironically, 8th would name a Vortusaur after her
That’s what ruins it stay out of politics and any subject that causes division.
Or play it both ways.
My favourite bit or trivia from this show;
There was very little rehearsal time so the Pertwee run was full of production issues including one night when the TARDIS console broke free from it's mooring at the centre of the stage and started moving around, prompting Pertwee in character to chase after the console shouting "Come back, you old girl!".
OH MY GOD 😂😂
I saw the Jon Pertwee version live in Manchester, and at one point the interior of the Tardis set got stuck while being flown into position. Pertwee, of course, carried on without raising an eyebrow.
The fact that you can't make it available makes me want to watch it even more lol
I saw the Jon Pertwee version in April 1989 at The Empire Theatre, Liverpool. I was amazed at how much energy he had, running around like a man half his age.
Seriously, I _love_ Colin Baker's dedication on this play.
He really was into it.
2:44 Josh getting back into his “missing episode” shoes
I was lucky enough to see two Pertwee performances. A first night performance and a later matinee.. There was fab atmosphere on the first night and everyone went wild when Pertwee reversed the polarity of the neutron flow. Me and my mates went wild at the same point in the later performance, only to realise were virtually alone with hundreds of stunned kids wishing they understood the joke... Pertwee graciously left just enough gap for our whoops before charging on with his “Ultimate” performance. The whole thing was like a cross between a panto and a rocky horror - but probably more heightened panto if i am honest. Joyful, as an live experience, but I admit it may not epic TV. It was a giggle to see it again here though - thanks.
Would be neat if Big Finish put 6’s coat from this somewhere in his timeline and had covers featuring the coat
Seeing Colin Baker as The Doctor without THAT coat makes you realise how much of a part of him it was. It really did suit his brash version.
I have on audio the only recording of Hyde Fund raisers 2005 theatre production of THE TRIAL OF DAVROS which starred Terry Molloy, Michael Wisher's son, John Leeson and the return of Peter Mile's Nyder. It was agreed with the estate of Terry Nation, to do a limited single night theatre production of the story. You can clearly hear them announcing that no "filming or photograph's of this production are allowed" ,but they didn't say anything about not recording it on audio !!
Thus being a big fan of Davros , I set about recording the whole play on my old mid-90's Sony Stereo Walkman Tape Recorder.
Then in 2010 I had it transferred by someone professionally onto audio disc, he upgraded the sound quality and it can be heard quite distinctly..
If I had the know-how I'd load it onto You Tube for everyone to enjoy, but I'm not at all savvy with any technology.
Now that's exciting! 😳
As a 7 year old in 89 going to this in Brighton was the most exciting thing ever I also remember seeing Colin in the newsagents next to the theatre buying a newspaper.
Its a shame Big Finish didn't use David Banks for the audio adaptation I love Colin but I'm morbidly curious to hear what the "greenpeace Doctor" was like....
Saw the Pertwee and Baker versions. Kind of The Rocky Doctor Picture Show.
Let's do the Time War again.
Geez, I wonder why there isn't a good quality copy. Did anyone think this would happen in the Army of Ghosts cliffhanger?
You know Josh, you never cease to amaze me. You have such a wide range of talents and are not afraid to give something a go.
Plus your love for doctor who always shines through.
Keep up the good work!
“Ultimately, the ultimate goal” etc etc The amount of unintentional use of ‘Ultimate’ is amazing :)
You really have a great passion for the show and it’s a shame it can’t be a legit release.
When I don’t have a script, I am TERRIBLE at using different words! 😂
Look out for how often I say “it’s just a bit of fun” throughout my videos, I can’t stop! Haha
This was very good, thank you. Honestly, this sort of thing, plus things like the colourisation of Day of Armageddon, should end up on a BBC DVD sometime
I went and watched this at Bradford with a bunch if Uni friends. It was freaking awesome! This is such a cool thing to do.
The guy who recorded the full versions was on Facebook in July, look in the photo research group.
This reminds me of how my 3rd grade teacher ran over a recording of the live Walking with Dinosaurs experience. I just bought off of eBay a plush T-Rex that was sold at the event bc it saddens me that an experience that brought me such joy, won’t be able to be relived like it was back then.
Woah how did I not know this existed!!?? :O Awesome restoration!! Brilliant work! :D Really interesting video! :)
From what you showed, it looks like you did a wonderful job with the restoration. Shame this won't ever get an official release.
Saw this in Birmingham, on the day the late great Jon Pertwee fell ill. Just dated it to 29 April 1989, how time flies.
I heard Terrance Dicks was planning to do a Target Novelisation of The Ultimate Adventure but Target chose not to publish it
That dancing is painfully late-80s.
If there ever is a Wilderness Years Box Set this needs to be in it.
The problem is that ‘The Ultimate Adventure’ isn’t a part of the wilderness years. It was a stage play which took place during the time before doctor who began its ‘break’.
It's wonderful that what exists, exists and that you've made such an effort with it. it all looks great.
i think these will always be my favorite videos from you josh, the ones that talk about restoration efforts, like this and the lost doctor who episodes.
Fascinating, looks like you've done a great job. Itching to see the end result! You're such a tease🙂
Wow even might have poor copy of the Ultimate Adventure, this brought back the both versions of the stage play with Jon Pertwee and Colin Baker pity there never recorded a proper official recording of both stage plays but thanks for the memories even the minor clips and restorations with audio sound improvement. I'd love get it on dvd in some shape or form.
I was at the very first performance of the Pertwee version, a matinee no less. IIRC there was an amusing cock up where Twerpy came on stage in the dark only to go off again as it appears it wasn't his scene or there was a technical problem that had caused him to leave. Also saw Colin Baker in Brighton and still have a bunch of flyers from that venue in a box somewhere.
Just Imagine if they remade the ultimate adventure with one of the Doctors from New Who
It would be great if the Beeb wanted to include it as an extra on a future blu-ray release.
It's so sad that we don't have it in higher quality.
When can we expect The Ultimate Adventure: The Nyssa Cut?
That’s what the people want!
@@JoshSnares Luckily, the Nyssa performance (where Sarah Sutton stood in for the Doctor) has the best video quality along with good audio quality.
Hold the TARDIS Phone! There was a version of the story with Nyssa standing in for The Doctor?!?
@@hugoalynstephens9166 Yeah but it got erased in the Time War so it no longer exists.
@@tailsknuxfan101 Goshdarnit! hahaha Excuse me while I go have a good old weep about this revelation at Dårlig Ulv-Stranden.
I loved your cameo on Mr. Tardis's Tomb of the Cybermen video. It is a dream come true for me. You and him are my two favorite Who-tubers!
You made the effort. You done good! And, most importantly, you made Uncle Terrance proud!
I have heard of the Ultimate Adventure but never ever seen any of it. To see Pertwee and Baker in these clips is wonderful. Well done on the restoration, try and persuade the BBC to put it on the season 22 Blu Ray 😉
I've tried to get into both the recordings and the Big Finish release, but struggled with both. However, it seems like you had fun delving into it, and I'm glad a "watchable" copy exists somewhere. You never know, someday a release could be possible!
Now, what about the Doctor Who Live: The Monsters Are Coming show from 2010?... ;)
Great video Josh! Nice to see this adventure get some attention, would love to see your cut of it one day.
I was fortunate enough to see both editions with Jon Pertwee and Colin Baker, very young at the time, and yet have great memories from the experience. Still have the original program book from the Jon Pertwee performance.
I have to admit that back in the day I'd have loved to see this. I'm almost curious enough to listen to the BF version just to get an idea of what it might have been like. Also, didn't they turn this into a Target book?
You are doing the (Time) Lord’s work, my friend.
Another top quality and interesting video Josh. Well done!!!
i think the work you have put into this is amazing. Yeah there isnt much you can do with VHS but I do like what you have done. Thank you
Thanks for doing this Josh!
I would kill a man to watch the Jon Pertwee or David Banks version.
I wish there were more Doctor Who curios like this. Just "go out and watch that play that Eccleston did in 2005 before he was the Doctor properly" or something, just weird things like that.
A shame there's only the one.
EDIT: This is also the first Josh Snares video I've watched in a good minute. Very well done.
I'd love to be able to watch your version, but unfortunately, legality gets in the way.
Maybe someday.
This amazing well done
I saw this stage play twice once on Glasgow with Jon pertwee and with Colin baker in Edinburgh which was barely attended that night coz of how hot it was that evening even the actors were nearly taking off 6heir costumes .
before you uploaded the video I didn't even know it exists
Josh, you are doing the work of the Gods.
Thanks for the upload your a legend josh
Really interesting concept for who and great video again Josh
👍
Hi Josh, another great vid. Thank you. I went to see the Pertwee version way back when in Mold (North Wales). At the time I was doing work for a hospital radio station in Manchester and managed to get an interview with Jon Pertwee prior to going on stage. Interesting personality and a bit snobbish I thought at the time. Regretfully, I no longer have the audio tape of the interview 😒 But, I still have a copy of the 'Souvenir Brochure' from the Pertwee production, which I'm happy to scan to PDF if you want a copy.
Nice little side project. Shame it can't really be released publicly.
Great video again, Mr Snares. Saw Pertwee in Birmingham and Baker in Bradford on the last night. Got hold of a stack of the A5 posters before they were thrown out!
Can we all just take a moment to admire that wonderful thumbnail on the video?
Wowza!
You are doing the lords work!
Thanks for the news. Fascinating to see as I didn't see the Colin Baker version.
I did see the Jon Pertwee production at the Birmingham Alexandra Theatre. Remember it with much affection.
Of course before mobiles were ubiquitous so I've got no video or photos.
Omg another Josh snares video that is so good 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Anyone want to go check Singapore for a copy?
😂
So this is where the Sixth Doctors blue coat came from? I noticed he has it on the cover of a few Big Finish stories, and assumed they made it up.
Breaks my heart despite expecting there to be no footage of David Banks' stand-in Doctor version of the play. Nonetheless, loved this video from start to finish. As a Whovian who likes to delve into the furthest realms of Doctor Who's History and also being small-time stage actor myself I've been fascinated by The Ultimate Adventure (and the other stage-plays of Doctor Who). I wish I could see your 'Watchable Edition' one day, Josh- it would be quite treat that 17 Year Old me would've adored to experience.
Oh dear god I worked on this! I was responsible for the creation of Zog and a few other insect like aliens used too! God this takes me back. lol I'd almost wiped this from my mind (I wish). Imo It was an awful idea and pretty poorly executed but fun for the kids and a brave thing to attempt with a low budget at the time.
Saw the Colin Baker version live back in the day. It was the first time I saw a Doctor in 'real' life. Ahh good times 🙂
I had no idea this even existed! Clearly, I am a bad Whovian. Fuiyoh, Josh, you are a treasure for revealing this treasure. :-)
I've only heard of this but not seen any footage, it would certainly make an interesting watch (would be a great DVD/Blu-Ray extra)
thanks for this..really interesting ..as always
There is another production I think you would like josh. It is lost, it is from the 1960s and it's the bbc. It is from the programe out of the unknown and the episode is called the prophet. The robots would go on to be the white robots from the mind robber. Such a cool video
Tbh I think the ultimate adventure sounds good on performance and big finish audio seems astonishing.
Heh. 3:34- you can see Banks had a ball wearing something that's not a humid silver suit or the Karl costume
How did i miss this notification? This is so awesome Josh
Mr Josh, BBC product? Ironic then that they missed a HUGE marketing trick here?
89: VHS home entertainment at its peak. Plus, not only do you have 2 Doctors but with the series' future was in doubt it made. Those factors are a selling point. Plus, around the time (as DWM stated then and after) BBC wanted to spread its wings commercially with VHS and other products such as Doctor Who or it's other shows ie Steptoe et el.
Film the entirety of the stage show with each Doctor's performance. With simple special effects?
So, you have an (amen) hybrid (back off new series *hugs*) of a stage performance and tv episode?
The best costume C. Baker ever had... and no one can really see it in all its glory.
The Ultimate Adventure gets a bad rap. I was fortunate enough to see the production with Colin at the helm in Nottingham at the Theatre Royal, and then interview him afterwards as I was working for a local paper at the time. While it didn’t receive the greatest critical acclaim from fans, it really really achieved what it set out to be. A fantastic family show aimed squarely at children aged 10 and under. It had a little bit of a cheeky nod towards the great British panto tradition with the level of gags and elements of slapstick to make kids laugh. Plot and often ‘larger than life’ performances aside (you need to project, darling, it’s theatre) the sheer technical brilliance of the production, especially for the time was quite amazing. Back projection with slick animations, explosions, a fully working Tardis console, endless laser effects and the Daleks constantly stole the show, when they could have easily been a staging disaster. As I was there to review, I was there very early on in its run (I don’t think it was opening night) and the audience were brilliant. Colin’s entrance received rapturous applause, as did the Daleks. It’s easy to be cynical about it, especially from the quality of what survives but it was an incredibly ambitious project that had pace and technical brilliance - if I’d been 10 years old I would definitely think I’d seen the best stage performance of Doctor Who that was possible. I can’t speak for Jon’s performances but Colin understood the format and the target audience and fully embraced it with huge amounts of energy and the greatest sense of fun. He was a joy to interview too. He knew he was an ambassador for a show that was dead as far as the bbc was concerned and he was determined to prove otherwise. That man’s love for the job and the fans should never be underestimated.
The Sixth Doctor costume for this play is a bit more "tame"
Oh I Love This
I saw this in Edinburgh in 1989 aged 12 but I don’t remember a lot about it. It was Colin Baker, one of the extras masks came off and ended up on the stage which Colin made a joke about “he’s lost his head” Apart from that, it’s all very hazy.
At long last, Zog is canon.
Nice!
if you can do it, maybe the BBC should be encoraged to do it as well. They do have experts in audio and video restoration after all. They've been doing mirricles with the navy lark for example. Heck. It may be that they could just put the play on again and record it anew.
Looks awesome, but it does feel like a bit of a tease that we can't actually see it. I totally understand your reasoning though. What would be cool is if the BBC included it as a bonus feature on a DVD or something.
I wouldn't mind seeing this show make a come back maybe with Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.
It’d be great to get the audio from big finish and match up the dialogue and sfx that works!
I think I might go listen to the Big Finish audios. Might be the best way to experience it unless they decide to give the show another run
I saw colin perform it in 1989 in nottingham i loved it lol my dad at time said wish it were jon pertwee ! i have the video myself yeah it's awful better to watch in real life but glad i went still have poster and brochures
I went to see the Colin Baker version in Wolverhampton and met Colin and David Banks after.
You could get in contact with Paul Vanezis and Russell Minton to see if they can take your version and do some more work on it and then put it on the Blu-ray collections?
I'd love see a copy of it on there.
I've been told the team are aware of it. I'm hoping they see it's a possibility and do it themselves, and do it 100x better! I'm sure they have much better contacts than I do :)
Great video, i still find it funny how wacky Doctor who is here, doctor who needs to be entertaining, this might just be for kids, but its fun and thats all that matters.
Looks like you've done a really good job. You are correct of course, to remaster something you need to go back to the master (In this case the videotape from the camera) so it's not not a remaster.
I saw the Jon Pertwee version! 👍
Can you make a fan ranking with every multi doctor stories and it would be kinda like The BIG Doctor Who Pole but only with multi doctor stories (The Three Doctors, Sirens of Time, Day of the Doctor, and Twice Upon a Time for example)?
I would 100% take part in that
Wish you could release it SOMEWHERE online at least
Come on BBC, you can milk all the value out of Tennant's face through the span of a year, yet you can't be bothered to redo this with Matt Smith?!
They should consider doing a new version of the stage play with either Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, or David Tennant
Was Colin’s costume not his tv one ? I saw Jon Pertwee in Mold in North Wales!
It looks so cheesy 😂 I love it
Well i am old enough to be around at the time some versions were swapped on tape ,i can't recall how good or bad the copies are have not watched them 20 30 years but i still have the VHS tapes i know i have both doctors more than likely what was mentioned in your video
I like Doctor Who: The Ultimate Adventure
Is there any chance you could tell me where I can find that audio recording of David Banks’ performance? I’m doing my own Doctor Who project and I think for my own integrity I need to hear his performance in any form I can find
