    Very informative and equally instructive. Great shooting also. Unfortunately too many people may confuse the ability to make a “hit” at those distances with making an ethical shot on an elk. There are very good bullets out there which may extend the range of a killing shot on elk. I’m not sure the SMK is one of them but it sure was a good place to start. Keep up the excellent work.

    • @MountainsMulletsMerica
      @MountainsMulletsMerica  Рік тому +26

      Oh man in no way am I implying making hits at extended ranges is ethical or something the average hunter should be considering. Even if a bullet were effective at that kind of distance it’s far too difficult and too many variables to make a consistent and clean shot at extended ranges…… not something I would support.

    Nice video! I love how you get right to it with the important information (setup, bullet, distance, ect.) and then just shoot. Too many doing these videos that require you to endure a whole bunch of mindless banter just to get to the shooting. I have subscribed because you just "Shut up and shoot". Great job and video. Great video with a lot of great information, awesome shooting, and helpful review! May have just convinced me to get a B14! I appreciate you acknowledging the impact of the recoil of the 300 win mag in a rifle like this; most people would just say to get stronger/ "be a man." I have a R700 SPS in 300 win mag and I have a hard time controlling it to observe hits as well (its the thin, unthreaded barrel unfortunately). Thanks for a great video, definitely subscribing!

    • @MountainsMulletsMerica
      @MountainsMulletsMerica  Рік тому +2

      Oh man folks that say get stronger or be a man are mostly talk…. Anyone that shoots long range regularly knows the less recoil a rifle has the easier it is to shoot to distance! I use a lock bolt Rugger skeleton stock it has less recoil than a standard 243 because the stock design pushes instead of kicking your teeth out. Thanks for the video this proves to me that I want a mounted supresor to get more hits at longer range. Took a six by seven elk at 980 yards last year with one shot he went 50 yards and rolled to 20 yards away from were I hit him.

    Great video . I was making hits consistently out to 700 yards with my sako 85 30-06 on steel . I then missed a nice buck at 268 yards because I only had 8-10 seconds to put the clip in and a shell into the chamber and get leaned against a tree . I was so disappointed. But goes to show hunting situations vs shooting targets were time isn’t a factor and you know your distance. Maybe try a video that someone sets up the targets for you and you have to range it , do your calculations and make the shot in a reasonable amount of time . Just a thought for a video . I like your vids . Keep them coming

      Man after seeing how this rifle did in 300WM, I'm positive your HMR will be capable of 1 mile+. I see the 300PRC bergaras have slightly faster barrel twist rates so you'll be able to run slightly heavier bullets. The amount of drop on the 300WM surprised vs what I'm used to on my 300PRC shooting heavies.

    Killed a Utah mule deer this last year at 831 yds with a tikka t3 in 300wm. The most nerve racking shot Ive ever taken, but turned out to be one of the best hits I've ever made. He didn't go 20. The 300wm in a hunting rifle is more than capable.

      Oh man I bet that was an epic experience! In my opinion 831 yds is a crazy long shot while hunting but as you found, with the right caliber and solid shot placement it’s very possible! I think the key is practice and having confidence in your gear and your ability.

      @@shaneziegler2555 actually not really on this buck due to terrain. I watched him for over 30 minutes, took 10 min to double check the ballistics, and wind. I spent 5+ years practicing for a long range shot, and 1st round hits at 1000yds+ most of the time. If you know your rifle and you are confident in the data, long range isnt all that hard. I did all the preparation, then dry fired on this buck 3 times before going live. So, is all that preparation reckless? I dont think so. There are never any guarentees at any range, but distance buys you some time to prepare for the shot.

My max at a big game animal falls way short of what you did here but I realize you weren't advocating a mile shot on an animal, you were just proving that the rifle is capable of hitting targets at long distance even though it's not a lr precision rifle.

I think In most cases hunting rifles are much more capable in a long range target environment than most give them credit for. Thanks for watching!

Still the rifle's performance at 1400 and beyond.... Was going to ask about a light rifle in 300 Mag with a T-shirt , what the hell were you thinking? LOL. I personally never 'warmed' to the 300 mag, too much recoil, too much muzzle blast, and not a big enough improvement over my 7 Rem Mag 700, with which I was a just plain better 'shooter'. Later, for hunting trophy Mule deer or ELK, I acquired a BLR 7mm, the old steel one NOT the newer alloy one. It came without the pistol grip stock, but with the longer barrel, .

    Spoke to Bergara US the other morning. Here’s what I learned. Bergara claims “Remington pattern ” with their B14 series rifles. That applies only to the receiver . If you want to make changes, such as bottom metal, you can’t. Everything other than the receiver is proprietary to Bergara! If you have other rifles that use a certain magazine, and you want to convert your B14, you can’t! You’re stuck with different mags for the same round for different rifles. AICS “pattern” magazines is about the design, not the length. One might expect 300 Win Mag in an HMR “match” rifle, to have a match length magazine, AICS 3.850. You would be wrong! The 300 PRC uses the 3.850”. Sure the shorter mag Bergara uses does function, but it won’t contain those really long 300s. The HMR 300 Win Mag magazine measures approx. 3.53” inside. Stuffing those really long handholds into into a 3.5” magazine, well, you need Merlin as your spotter to help with that! If you built a custom math rifle, what magazine would you use, a 3.5 or 3.85 mag? 300PRC, 300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, and 7mm PRC can all use it. Why they spend money making multiple different bottom metals and magazines when they only need one, would seem to be a waste of company money, resulting in elevated prices for the consumer. As a guess. it seems Bergara is putting the screws their customers. If you paid extra money for the Wilderness version, you may suddenly be unhappy if you bought a magnum HMR for the “match.”. And no. Bergara will not sell you a replacement bottom metal. Someday they plan to. Doesn’t that make you feel all warm and fuzzy. I hope this helps clear up any confusion. If a long magazine is important to you, a few of Bergara competitors have rifles in the price class that have the big magazines. Eithe way, the HMR will make small groups!

    I would argue that what defines a 'target' vs 'hunting' rifle are feature. And those so called hunting rifle hasn't almost every feature a target rifle has. Adjustable cheek-piece, light, adj. trigger, heavier profile barrel, trackable/zoomy optic, a bubble level, high quality rings and bases, muzzle device, bipod, high quality ammo. About the only thing this rifle doesn't have is a bedded chassis, and a christmas tree. Not the same as taking grandpas, or a tikka or kimber lightweight w/a SFP 3-9 duplex and old Remington core-lokt.

    Love your videos.. Just out of Lewiston myself. You shoot a lot of longer distances. How much magnification do you think one needs to adequately shoot an AR 556 at range? My little 6x LPVO doesn't do it with my bad eyes and I want to stretch it out as far a I can. Which most likely isn't as far as you did in your earlier video with the Razor 1X10. I was thinking something like the optic you are shooting here but I did like how the tree looked on the Razor. That hunting rifle did awesome. Just goes to show that for practical accuracy it would get the job done. Great hearing the Elk bugle.

    • @MountainsMulletsMerica

      Depending on distance and target size, something with 10-18x on the top end would be more than enough for out to say 1000 yds. I'd say something like the vortex razor 1-10 would be perfect if you're looking for something like "combat accuracy", or something like this 18x leupold in this video would be more along the lines of a true precision rifle optic. For what it's worth, you can get a christmas tree type reticle really in any of the scopes nowadays, the leupold just doesn't have one because my buddy thinks they are too cluttered. I was shooting a full size IPSC with my .308 MK11 the other night at 1100 yds using 12x mag and had no problem making hits. Hope these comments help you out! Thanks for watching!

      Getting a high dollar scope isn't going to magically change the capabilities of the rifle. If you are using 5.56, you're looking at a maximum effective range of 600 yds.
      As far as the scope, there are a few out there just for 5.56 that already have the holdovers and drop in. As the young man mentioned before, some of the 'Christmas tree' reticles are good that will give you bullet drop and wind holdovers for f-v and h/v wings.

    First of all a rifle like this should not be advertised for Long range hunting. If you're taking shots at elk at 4-500 yards on a mountain, that should be about the most you should attempt ethically. Unless you are perfectly rested and a very accomplished Marksman with the right tool in hand should you even attempt a lower probability shot. At that point it's not hunting anymore its just target shooting.

      @@MountainsMulletsMerica Define longer range... Capability of a 1000yd rifle, that's not hunting anymore. You don't need to learn how to track or how to play the wind with regards to animal/ predator detection. Its purely long range target accuracy. Less than 5% rifle shooters are capable of making a 500 yd shot in a vital zone on a deer or elk sized animal, consistently. How many times are we in the woods perfectly rested with a clear line of sight and in favorable conditions to attempt a shot at that range, let alone anything beyond that. Just my 2 cents
