At Welter Whitaker was oft the smaller man, this served to exaggerate his defensive counter punching style. I thought Pernell edged it tho. The scorecards were way off. As Joe Cortez has said the position of the judges needs to be higher.
Ah this was the fight with which the "meme before there were memes" of Jim Lampley's cheerleading for De La Hoya was in full force, giving him credit for shots that didn't land, and reaching the point of climax whenever Oscar threw a combination. Whitaker won this fight, and Oscar tried to work the crowd by throwing a combination that missed and then putting his arm up to the pro DLH crowd as if he'd landed everything and won the round. But Pernell clearly won this fight, and was robbed again, there's a reason DLH didn't give him a rematch. Whitaker was right when he said Oscar wasn't really gonna give him a rematch.
Please, see this fight in slow motion. There're a LOT less punches landed than what compubox counted (or what ANY of the commentators said). Yet, I still had Oscar winning more rounds than Pernell. Oscar clearly won 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12. (They landed the same amount of punches in round 7. But Oscar landed right hands over Pernell's jab). Question: Why the cut on DLH was not a problem for DLH if he was cut as early as in the 3rd round? Why did the cut close completely? Because Pernell did not landed his Left hand at all. Again, see it in slow motion. There were many rounds where Pernell only landed jabs, and did not landed one single right hook in the whole fight. Close match. Yes. But DLH won it.

Neither did the journalists who covered it live, because they were polled after the fight: 11 had Oscar winning, 14 had Whitaker winning. But that aside, there is no bigger testament to Whitaker's greatness than the fact that at his age, with drug problems, coming off four subpar performances (Rivera x2, Hurtado, Gary Jacobs) and clearly past his prime years, all while fighting a naturally much bigger fighter, Pernell still possibly beat a young Oscar de la Hoya. That's how great this guy was. Thank god for UA-cam, we can't let the new generation of boxing fans forget someone like this.

No..I disagree. I take the Kellerman approach to scoring a round; at the end of the round, ask yourself who would you rather have been in that round? All time great technical battle , in early rounds de la hoya was hitting the air most of the times against one of the best defensive fighter of all time pernall Whitaker, in mid rounds de la hoya started switching stance Whitaker was having a bit of trouble to adjust de la hoya get chances to land some good shots then danced around forced Whitaker to lead and he was having some success countering,in last rounds whittaker started dancing and boxed Oscar around. F- Jim Lampley. Idgaf how you spell it.God he was soooo bias!! Thank goodness RJJ and Larry Merchant were there to humble his bias! #Wifebeater
I know. Him and Larry merchant were always trying to criticize black fighters.
Dwayne Louis Larry Merchant was biased against Oscar.
Really was he as much bias as larry foul mouth
Lamply beat his wife?
Great great fight! One of the best fight ever. I think it’s a draw. The rematch never happened by the way, the match maker probably did so to protect de la hoya the hottest star at the time.
@Jimmy Garcia shut up imbecell
50:14 Larry Merchant showing as an old man he's such a novice. Listen to what he tells Roy, and Roy, being an experienced champion tries to tell him it's easier said than done. This is why you shouldn't have a commentator who never laced up gloves. larry ignorance in that conversation shows that the stuff he said in years afterward have no real basis. I'm glad he eventually got called out on his BS. He knows very little about boxing.
I'm sorry i have to disagree with you there, fighters just aren't as entertaining like a commentator, have you heard Sergio mora commentating, he's terrible, Roy was ok, and Lennox Lewis wasn't good either, commentators are very important
@@leopalio2319 other spirts have play bybplay who have at least played the sport, even if not on a pro level. But boxing has guys who have never fought. And im not saying EVERY fighter would make a good commentator, but some would. And all of them are very insightful.
Oscar kicked his ass he landed way more punches that's the point
Withaker clearly got robbed. He stayed getting robbed in the 90s. He’s one of the greatest boxers ever
Oh hell nah cut the bs lmak he ain’t get robbed for shit 😂
@@charlievazquez5124 stop with BS am Mexican & If u see his fights he got robbed he clearly got robbed.
Pernell was robbed point blank
How all sweet pea does is show boat
the only thing I like about De La Hoya is that he fought everybody
Same Pernell.
Pernell Whitaker only lost one fight and that was to Felix Trinidad, and he had to be a crackhead for that to be possible. Actually even if he wasn't he would've just got robbed again, nevermind
Trinidad was younger by many years. That absolutely counts, papa. RIP great champ. 🙏
Love to judge a fight as it happens.
Watched this fight for a 36 year birthday.
Today in 2022 watched it for a third time. Still a nightmare to judge.
Whitaker was robbed. Those judges should be in prison.
No and lol
Two gold medalist in a classic fight 🥊🥊🥊
2nd round lampley says oscar landed straight rights? When?
And what flurry at the end of round 4
@@eugeniorodriguez4445 🤨
@@phoenixrising3404 what cause I said the truth he didn't land none of those punches in that flurry in the end of round 4
Arguably the greatest performance by Whitaker hands down....he beat him cleanly the problem was that Whitaker was already starting to dabble in drugs...but His my number 1 in my opinion that's the guy I admire
racism in boxing: in that very same year with same ref Evander Holyfield accidentally headbuts tyson (before Tyson bit his ear) the ref mills lane doesn't deduct a point for Holyfield's head but, yet he deduct Whitaker for his headbut against "the golden boy"
That doesn't sound like racism that just sounds like a ref not paying attention
Suddenly I'm sleepy during one fight and wide awake for another 👀🤔
Black Mamba........bingo! Somebody gets it
Oscar, lo mejor!
An old Whitaker looked better against a young De la hoya than a young May weather did against an old De LA hoya
LMAO
You believe this??
@@cmoneyno5 you know Mayweather has too many haters. Mayweather clearly outboxed de la hoya.
I love sweet pea but look at his face compared to Mayweathers at the end of the fight.
Bullshit...
Pernell Whittaker was on the end of some shocking decisions.
Said he would give him a rematch....Whitaker vs De La Hoya 2... where'd you go?!?! I gave the fight to Whitaker by 115-113
kingsofcobra ROBBED
didn't see it can't watch gay weather
Oscar didn't give him a rematch because he knew he'd lost the first fight.
He said on hbo that he did not want to give,Sweet p a rematch because he was too awkward?? What the fu**????.that was a first to me!! weak (a** excuse) sweet p won 115-113
Bob Arum said no to the rematch
Lampley doesn’t like Purnell.
He was trying to promote Oscar
pernell didnt go their to win the fight, he went there to survive the fight, u cant award any fighter with a win with that approach, not on a championship fight
Joey joey I agree, pernell didn’t land anything clean and lost by a wide margin on all score cards.
Except Mayweather vs Pac they gave it to Gayweather
You are smoking incredible amounts of crack
“I dont see how whittaker can win this fight throwing 44 punches per round.”
“how many has oscar thrown around”
“well about 40 or 44”
Even Whitaker’s trainers knew Pernell was losing badly and sweat pea said “then I’ll lose the fight”. So he tried to survive so he could complain after the decision. Lol.
Whitaker the only person that truly beat Chavez and they called it a draw. He should have won that fight..
Larry Merchant was really insufferable here
Good fight
De La Hoya landed the better punches in this fight. He landed the ones that really counted. This was the first real loss in Pernell Whitaker's career!
No Jose Luis Ramirez beat him
One of the my favorite boxers ever
