This is one of those molds that make you wonder why someone thought, “You know what the world needs? A clown mug!” Not my favorite mold, but Shelby did a great job!
This comment made me laugh! SO GOOD! A clown mug! Although I think we might be having this thought reoccurring with some of these moulds! You know what the world needs.... *insert whacky creation here*
I love that you mentioned the sensory issues! I really wanted to like pottery (I love the idea and it's such a beautiful hobby) but I just couldn't deal with the wet cold clay. I've found my true love in sewing and fiber arts, as its warm and soft which is much better for me.
Yes! I sometimes paint pottery at pottery shops that have made pieces and always have to wear gloves when I do because of the texture of the pieces and paint
I love that you mentioned the sensory issues with different mediums!! I feel that's something many people don't really consider then later get discouraged by.
I teach community art classes of all kinds for all ages. The first thing I start each class with is, "There is no wrong way to do art". It may not come out like you had in your head, but a lot of the time if I walk away from the piece (Put it in Timeout lol). Then in a few days I look at it with fresh eyes and less of my preconceived outcome in my mind. I find that it really is great in its own way or that someone else just thinks it's a masterpiece and I still hate it! LOL Either way, I have learned the best lessons by having to figure out how to salvage a "disaster". I can help my people so much more because I have made the mistakes for them and get to save them the frustration of having to figure out how to still like the final outcome. 😁
ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH THIS AND LOVE THIS!! Im applauding you right now! This is such a good point, I find when I make a mistake I go 'this is great, a teachable moment to warn future students' hahaha! I love the saying there is no wrong way to do art too! I live by that!
I could imagine this mould being perfect for creepy Halloween style clown mugs. So happy for you getting on the youtube front page, you deserve it! 👏👏👏
YES YESYES! I didn't realise that Americans started preparing for Halloween so early because we don't really celebrate it here so this mould was perfect timing!
Hey there! Found a rec for your channel on Tumblr, of all places, and have been enjoying the series. I really agree about the sensory aspect of crafting. I've made small forays into polymer and air-dry clay (thanks for those recommendations! Nice to know I'm on the right track). It's been interesting and fun to shape things. I love how smooth wet clay is! It's interesting that you consider natural clay dusty and sloppy, but I do still want to try that one day. I love knitting and crochet and spinning, and recently I've tried leather-work. It's surprisingly an excellent fit for me! I love the thickness of the material, the feedback of cutting out pieces and even the sewing. I think I'm attracted to more 3-D materials? I would love to love wood-working, carving and so on, but I honestly hate the mess and all the shavings. I grew up with sewists all around, but I don't find it very fulfilling. It's so interesting to me what rules out a craft vs makes one a delight!
This is great! Another thought on how to get started with pottery is to utilize your school if you’re still a student. I started in high school and had the opportunity to take about 6 semesters of pottery classes between high school, community college, and my final university. Also most community colleges (in the U.S.) will allow people to join a pottery class even if they’re not a full time student! That way you can make tons of work and get a bunch of knowledge from your instructors and try out all kinds of techniques without needing to buy a kiln! ❤️
I am one of the new subscribers who found you on my feed last week. Thank you for your lovely uplifting content and for sharing your beautiful art. You have such a huge skill-set, both in clay and in creating film content. I am sure your workshops are amazing!
I normally don’t have too many problems with clowns but as soon as I saw that mould, the makeup reminded me of John Wayne Gacy and I do find them very creepy for that reason
Never thought "I'll look at those cute ceramics videos" & "What did John Wayne Gacy look like again?" would be related thoughts passing thru my head...
Thought these were awful at first but after you painted them I think they turned out really cute. I think you should do the random color choice on one like you said then paint the rest how you normally would ❤️
You're great. You're very talented. I just want to preface this by making sure this is no reflection on you or your artistry... But I have never hated anything more in my life and those mugs will haunt my dreams. This should have been halloween episode. Lol.
I love them, they turned out so pretty. Our favourite thing to do on a thursday and Saturday. Thanks Shelby for giving us some sunshine in these weird times were living in.
AWH THIS IS SO NICE! Thank you so much! I am just so happy it is something to look forward too and a little bit of excitement to change up these strange weeks we are living through!
Oh Tanya, such a sweet and true thing to say. I savor these videos because they’re just so pure, and innocent, and good. I need a dose of that almost everyday it seems, and reading your thoughtful words made me feel like the world really is still filled with kind people.
Hehe, dipping that sponge in the wrong bucket reminds me of myself taking a deep swigg from the cup I rinse my brushes in when I do acrylic painting...
Oh my gosh! Number 40 already!? I’m so happy I’ve been following and been able to see your channel grow 💛 congrats on the spotlight!! I hope you’re feeling proud! You deserve all this support, you’re very talented!
Congratulations! Your definitely deserve creator on the rise! I didn't know it was a thing either, but I would've chosen you had I been given the chance to vote. The mugs are... interesting? LoL not a clown fan myself but as usual, you have somehow made them adorable.
I enjoy watching how you choose where to put color. I would have used those raised bits as outlines to color within. The fact that you used the divider lines only for color just shows how many options a design can lead to.
I’m with you, clowns are just creepy! But you did a great job of painting them! I would totally turn them around on the shelf so they aren’t looking at you!
I love this mold! Painting it in an old Pierrot clown style would look so cute! Kudos to you for coming up with a cute finished product even though you weren't crazy about it in the first place 💕 your work is gorgeous
Not my personal fav, but always love seeing what you do with them and hearing about the process! They turned out so much better than I thought they would when you first opened up the moulds!!! Even my 4o commented they didn’t turn out creepy at all!!! 🤣🤣
I really look forward to your videos, I love all the mysteries about the process and I love all the information you give in the voice overs. Great job keep it up!
I love your videos so much, thank you for sharing your projects. My life is so intense and difficult right now and these videos really give me small moments to just relax and smile and enjoy something. You have such an abundance of positivity and joy and it is INFECTIOUS. Thank you for helping me smile when I’m not able to in my own :)
Marcus! Bless. I needed this comment so much today. I am so happy they found you when you needed them the most. Bless your cotton socks for finding them and sharing these thoughts and feelings with me. I feel them through the internet and I’m so grateful! Have a good day and I hope they continue to make you smile!
I love your idea for glaze samples. I have mine on a shelf above the door. (It's good to be tall) but I am running short on space. Every inch counts when ya tryin to earn your dream studio.
Hi Shelby, the face is actually nice on the clown. Had you considered carving off some of the clown lines and soothing it out to make a gnome type face? I think I would just take off the vertical lines through the eye area and the outline around the mouth. See what it looks like then. I know, a lot of work. lol. Oh, maybe paint one like you did the birds with all the random small flowers. lol Seems I have a lot of work for you to do. ha ha. I do think they are for children too. I think I remember seeing cups like this on children dressers, for hair ribbons or flower arrangements.
AWH! Thank you! I am so happy you like it! I feel like all of these moulds have so much potential regardless of what your taste and aesthetic is! Its definitely not mine but I definitely see the appeal!
There are places to go and paint glaze on everything from plates, mugs and animals. I would suggest someone try a few of those before running out to buy a kiln. If you are planning to sell, it gives you a chance to see if you have the creative flare to make something others would want to buy. There are used kilns and molds for sale, so you can start small. Working with glaze is interesting. You make it look easy, but it takes time!
I do not like clowns at all and the mug before it was painted creeped me right out! And when you did the eyes before firing it I had hope they would be absolutely adorable but still freaked me out in the end 😂 But they came out amazingly bright!
I like that you do what works for you despite all the unsolicited advice 😆 your pieces are always so fun and beautiful 💖✨ clowns freak me out a bit LOL but even these have a cool retro vibe ✨
THANK YOU! I just want to encourage people that there is no wrong or right way to do things! There are some rules in pottery but there is no wrong or right way to follow those rules! Thank you so much for your love!
Clown...mug...so it is basically drinking out of a clown's head. I have recently discovered your channel and have been binge-watching over the past few days, you are so colorful and happy and it shows in your painting. I love your videos. 😃
Clay is an odd one for me. I hate feeling anything on my hands. I wash them constantly and the surfaces they touch because i don't like dust, grease, etc. And clay does obviously check those marks for the dust, the crusty dried slip, and how it gets under your nails and between your fingers. But I LOVE it. It's almost like a defiance of something that I know can hinder me in everyday situations, like using a mouse or phone for too long, or after cleaning something messy. Like I'm telling that bit of distress that it can take a hike while i create something that I love.
Yeah I agree, classic clowns aren't really my thing, but when you said Circus Chic, I instantly thought more bold of colors, like cobalt and black! Or just black and white, maybe adding some stars or moons or something, even carving off the outline around the lips or something! All in all, I like, it would be nice to see your own go at it, something challenging, like you said
Your work, as always, is amazing. The clowns however are a bit on the creepy side. I wonder if these were meant to go with a circus themed tea pot. That would have been something
So I found your ticktock thanks to lunafae creations videos and started watching your ticktocks. Lol I didn't even think you'd have a yt as well. Im happy you do. I can see how addictive these are. I love clay but have never tried to make anything myself. Hello from New Zealand
My mom is the same way about clowns tbh! She always said they scared her / made her uncomfortable because you never know what's behind all that makeup, but I'm glad you gave this clown cup a chance!!
The tip on starting small made me laugh because I just picked up crocheting after barely remembering how to chain the yarn and I did leg warmers, wrist warmers which are easy but then I jumped straight into a cardigan and as I’m watching this series I’ve undone the sleeve I’m working on like 10 times 😂
eep they give me the heebie jeebies! you did a lovely job colouring them tho. when you eventually get through all these do you think you'll buy another lot off gumtree and do it all again?
I have something in the works at the moment! I am building the new studio first but a lovely lady saw my videos and offered to sell me her old mould business so I might have thousands more! We will see how all of that goes first and I don't want to jinx it until it is locked in!
If you’re not wanting to sell them or keep them (lol) you could auction them off as a fundraiser for youth circus organizations. AYCO is a great one in the US, but I’m sure there are similar organizations in Australia.
Oh man this brought back so many childhood memories my elderly neighbour collected ceramic clowns and had a cup just like that she would give it to me and tell a story.
Right? Like why one ear? I get what they were doing, making the handle consistent with the shape but it looks really weird without one on the other side?
Check estate sales when looking for kilns. Mine came from an older woman who had her own ceramic business and was the smaller of the two kilns she had. It's a teacher's kiln and cost me 20 dollars.
My first immediate thought when i saw the orange hair for the clown mugs was "Oh! Bassie from Bassie en Adrian!" and it just made me adore these mugs by giving me a hit of nostalgia lol
I actually really like the mug lol, i think its cute. I think its cool you can make it look cutsie and bright, or you could make it more creepy and dark, i think a black and white one would be super rad
Whenever I see that you've uploaded a video in this series, I drop whatever I'm doing to watch it immediately! I always feel inspired to try new and unexpected things in my own artmarking. I'm also one of those people like you mentioned who much prefers watching others make pottery to doing it myself lol. I had to do a semester of pottery at university and my sensitive skin couldn't handle it. It's a shame because I love art that is also often functional, and pottery is one of the best examples of that. Anyway, I think these mugs are surprisingly pretty and joyful considering I also find clowns a little bit creepy haha.
AWH Thank you so dang much! It absolutely is a funny medium to work with! I think this series has seen a lot of interest in these moulds which is fabulous and I am so excited for people to get into it. On the other hand I don't want people going out and spending big dollars just to find out they don't actually enjoy it as it is a big commitment!
I know this is a really old video, and forgive me if I missed where it was mentioned (I did go back and look where I thought it might be, and it wasn't there), but was there any identifying info that might help someone (i.e. me) find this mould somewhere out there in the world? I'm definitely in the "clowns are super creepy" camp, but I actually really dig creepy stuff! I would LOVE to try my hand at this kind of pottery, with a mould that I'd enjoy so much for its weirdness.
My 7 yo daughter caught a glimpse of the end of the video and quickly said "I don't like those." She has never talked about clowns, at least not that I recall...so, clown freak out factor must be innate. LOL!! I think these mugs are pretty cute, creepiness and all!
You really showcase your talent when you make something you don’t ‘love’ and it turns out really nice! They aren’t as creepy as they could have been. I think it would be neat to see the black wash over them. That would give them the full creep factor!
Thank you so dang much! Its creepy! I am happy you liked the advice! It is so hard to squish in some solid advice in the time limits within the video so I hope it is still informative and helpful!
Fabulous as always. Not a clown lover either just like you. I wouldnt paint the lips. The big wide mouth part thats white would look more clown like if the lips were white too. I love watching your channel and hope you never run out of moulds
😢 hey Shelby, clowns really creep me out too! I think maybe things could have been sort of cute done with a little femininity white elongated black eyelashes and a cute little earring like you suggested. Maybe😅
I have no interest in taking up pottery in way at all. But I found this so interesting and some amazing advice and tips so cool and so well.layed out. I dont like clowns either. But still loved the video and really enjoyed it as with all this series it's really interesting and a nice laid back enjoyable evening veiwing
OH THIS IS SO NICE! Thank you so much! I think I would have chosen colours pretty close to these but maybe in their own colour pallette! So happy you liked these ones!
5:78 By no means go for perfection on my end. For me it's getting a reputation in the business of being trustworthy having items that are quality that last. Ethics that side. To me that matters small business wise. It absolutely matters how you treat others to make profits business is ALWAYS PERSONAL built by people- I don't know any lions in business or other species starting businesses so, yes it's personal. On my end it matters whatever I'm making and selling lasts them, is as ethical as possible and they see the item as an investment piece they understand what they the customer is supporting when buying from you. That matters as well as a TRUE backstory your brand...these are all elements I personally value. I've loved watching you work and grow. Congrats on being featured as a creator! On UA-cam or whatever it was! Very happy for you I'd be honored to have one of your pieces maybe not the disturbing Clown that looks like "It" no, I'm not huge on Stephen King my reality is horrifying enough. But, I've loved much of your work and spirit. You genuinely care. That does come through I tend to find myself wanting to hive you a hug. So, virtual hug delivered social distancing. I'd like to hear more on your backstory who introduced you to pottery? Your early introduction to now? Someone or something inspired you. I'm interested in knowing that information if you are willing to share? If not understand I disable comments on my channel intentionally. Don't like social media overall feel people like yourself get lost on there the quality ones. It is an honor to find your channel so, thank you for posting! Happy your shop is sold out, bummer since I'd love to buy a piece from you. A Shelby exclusive. ♡ Been making items mostly jewelry out of clay I didn't expect to love it, I do like it. It's not for everyone. As for air dry clay enjoy it some great recipes out there. Pottery I do love a lot. Your type pouring models probably like more than the Pottery wheel throwing clay, personally. Can't stand that movie "Ghost" I do Crack up when I think of the show "Community" where the Pottery teacher banned ghosting. Then they were kicked out of class for it. Also fun to throw clay at certain people better than mass shootings we have in the USA. Just throw clay less expensive than bullets etc. Arts and crafts are vital as is music all of that. Enjoy hearing your perspective on the craft. Sewing especially crochet isn't for me. Brings out the worst parts of me. However, I'm impressed with anyone who does the craft works in textiles. There is a series on PBS our public broadcast station in US called "Craft in America" I love it you remind me of many who have been featured. I'll link the channel with the episodes.
Aahh! Not a favourite of mine at all, but because I think you’re Amazing, I stayed till the end, liked and subscribed. So much work involved and you do it like a boss.
Wow, those mugs are so creepy. Can't figure out who thought this design was a good idea. You did a wonderful work on them. however, they still look like a haunted cursed object.
the best part of the video was the dog. 🥰 I just don't have a lot to say as clowns also make me uncomfortable but you still did such a good job with them. 🥰
YES! I don't know how to explain it! like not terrified or a phobia, just weirded out! I remember when I was in High School there was this prank people used to do and dress up as a clown and scare people and that was just so weird and freaked me out! In the same merit, I can appreciate the beauty and the artistry of it? Yeah just weird!
i hate clowns too you made 4 to many lol. but still loving the mushroom cups in the backround is that something you make often? and is their moulds from earlier videos your making because of the mould reveal videos maybe a a round up video in the future?
AHAHAHH four to many! AHAH I love that! I do make them often now! I have to give the moulds a rest for a moment as they get over saturated and if you use them at this point you can wreck them so I am pausing those whilst the moulds dry out again but once they are dry I will have them back in the shop again!
@@ShelbySherritt I know you can paint bisque but it won't be food safe. You can't paint glaze because acrylics adhere so poorly some people use glazed tiles as pallettes. It doesn't help that acrylics being water based will cause them to get messed up or come off if they're submerged in water or washed like normal pottery.
My dad gave me a blue clown plastic lolly box that looks similar to this from when he was little maybe there is pictures to do it in a antique kinda way
Eewwww, clowns! Found myself curling my lip the whole video. Kudos to you, Shelby for over coming your bias of these creatures. I would have smashed it upon opening the mold!!
*insert whacky creation here*
I totally agree!
Not just 1 clown mug, but an unending supply of clown mugs, because they made a mold of it.

I love your clowns. They are adorable. You did them justice even though you don't care for them. I like that.
Aww thank you so much! I had an outcry last time when I didn't finish a mould so I am going to do it even though I was reluctant ahahha!
I could imagine this mould being perfect for creepy Halloween style clown mugs.

Thank you so much!!
Yeah I agree, classic clowns aren't really my thing, but when you said Circus Chic, I instantly thought more bold of colors, like cobalt and black! Or just black and white, maybe adding some stars or moons or something, even carving off the outline around the lips or something! All in all, I like, it would be nice to see your own go at it, something challenging, like you said
YESS! This is what I meant! Like really falling into that mystical, wonderful, magical aura that some clowns portray!
Watching you do art really brings peace to my mind! Keep up the great work 🥰
I love your videos and the insight to your world! Thank you for sharing with us! ❤️
AWH Thank you so much! And thank you so much for being here!
Your work, as always, is amazing. The clowns however are a bit on the creepy side. I wonder if these were meant to go with a circus themed tea pot. That would have been something
Imagine a circus themed tea pot! How glorious! Like a big circus tent! Or an elephant with its trunk as the spout!
These are so cute! I don’t like clowns very much but you did them justice. 10/10 would buy if I saw these in a thrift store.
So glad you decided overcome your aversion to clowns, these are amazing, hope you can revisit the first one, I know you can do a wonderful job with it
eep they give me the heebie jeebies! you did a lovely job colouring them tho. when you eventually get through all these do you think you'll buy another lot off gumtree and do it all again?
I have something in the works at the moment! I am building the new studio first but a lovely lady saw my videos and offered to sell me her old mould business so I might have thousands more! We will see how all of that goes first and I don't want to jinx it until it is locked in!
If you’re not wanting to sell them or keep them (lol) you could auction them off as a fundraiser for youth circus organizations. AYCO is a great one in the US, but I’m sure there are similar organizations in Australia.
Oh wow thats cool! Thank you for sharing those!
We love your little molds.
Oh man this brought back so many childhood memories my elderly neighbour collected ceramic clowns and had a cup just like that she would give it to me and tell a story.
I agree with you shelby, I hate clowns as well 😒
I am just proud of myself for completing it this week ahahah!
I love content creators that leave their blooper/oops moments.
I would love to see you go back once we get to 50 to see all of the pieces you've done and see them painted as you intend.
Well that was terrifying! The worst part is the one ear handle. The paint job was really nice though!
The time and effort you put into your work is amazing! I think the handle looks like an ear- the mold maker should have made the mug 2 handled!!!
Grand job they look great luv xx 💖🇮🇪
Thanks for the advice. Love your page!!
I am so happy it was helpful!
I couldn't be happier to see all the new subs! You deserve it, and so much more! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I actually really like the mug lol, i think its cute. I think its cool you can make it look cutsie and bright, or you could make it more creepy and dark, i think a black and white one would be super rad
“Creator on the rise”, congratulations! 🎉🎊
Always look forward to your videos!!
I like those mugs with the mushrooms that I spotted in the kill.
Opens the lid. "Wow! uöh!" Hillarious.
Aaaw, Congrats!!! You deserve it!! Thanks for all the lovely videos!! ....Not a fan of clowns either, but maybe as a Halloween set😉
AWH You are amazing! Thank you so much for this! Definitely could work for a halloween set!
@@ShelbySherritt 🤗🥰
My 7 yo daughter caught a glimpse of the end of the video and quickly said "I don't like those." She has never talked about clowns, at least not that I recall...so, clown freak out factor must be innate. LOL!! I think these mugs are pretty cute, creepiness and all!
You really showcase your talent when you make something you don’t ‘love’ and it turns out really nice! They aren’t as creepy as they could have been. I think it would be neat to see the black wash over them. That would give them the full creep factor!
I don’t especially like clowns, but I DO like having things in my home that unsettle other people so I LOVE these lol
I love clowns, and that mug is perfect to hold Halloween candies
In my entire life I have never seen a clown with a bow. Does anyone know when and/or where that style is from?
I THOUGHT THE SAME THING!! Someone please weigh in! I thought maybe it was in replacement for the hats clowns wear sometimes?
Oof, clowns. But you worked through it and they turned out decently!! Listening to the advice/how to get into pottery has been really interesting.
You are so good, I hate clowns too but you still did a good job.
THANK YOU!
i would be to tempted to make a john wayne gacy style cup lol came out great
Congrats on your recognition! 👏
Thank you so much 😀
Maybe you could try a dent puller to hold them when you dip, but you might need to wax the bottom for that, I don't know...
I don’t even like clowns very much, but yours ended up kind of cute? The pastels ended up pretty endearing despite the awful mold.
Been making items mostly jewelry out of clay I didn't expect to love it, I do like it.

Love that series.
Aahh! Not a favourite of mine at all, but because I think you’re Amazing, I stayed till the end, liked and subscribed. So much work involved and you do it like a boss.
AWH THIS IS SO NICE! Thank you so dang much!!
Amazing mugs Shelby ❤️
Wow, those mugs are so creepy. Can't figure out who thought this design was a good idea. You did a wonderful work on them. however, they still look like a haunted cursed object.
Creator on the rise! That's amazing! Congrats!
they're terrifying but you did wonderfully with the colors 🙈
I think the blue strip look down the face looks the best..the blue on the eyebrows looked a bit odd
the best part of the video was the dog. 🥰 I just don't have a lot to say as clowns also make me uncomfortable but you still did such a good job with them. 🥰
AHAHHA! Right? I was laughing so hard when I made that edit! Her head is just so dorky! Thank you so much for your love!
As someone who does like clowns, the orange ones are super sweet! I can definitely picture a child drinking hot chocolate from them!
I have the same clown issue. They are still cute in a creepy way. Maybe a creepy halloween mug in the future?
As someone who adores clowns, they are really cute! I love them. Honestly, a mold I would want to paint if I didn't use acrylics.
There might be a way you could paint them with acrylics! I am trialling some things behind the scenes now!
I like to have your whole clown cup stock🥰
Ooh no I agree, clowns are seriously not for me!! Way too creepy but yours looked great
