Its so interesting how different adults interpret different childrens books. I didnt encounter the rainbow fish until I was an adult and its horrible to me - like the message is give pieces of yourself away, whatever makes you special, so that other people will be happy and like you. Its right up there with the Giving Tree in terms of WTF for me. But I can also totally see your perspective of wanting to share your creativity to bring happiness. I think maybe its partly bc its the fish's literal body parts that it feels so weird to me? Idk. Unrelated, the fish mold is beautiful and your work, as always, is lovely. Ive never seen that gold luster before and holy cow. Amazing.
My husband and I laugh about how The Rainbow Fish seems like a Communist propaganda book. I agree that it's right up there with The Giving tree on the weirdness scale for books.
You're not alone. It didn't _hurt_ me as a child but I did think it was strange and sounded painful. I think I was a little older so I understood the message wasn't meant to be literal, but I thought the other fish were very selfish for demanding things that were not their own. I'm studying to be a teacher and I think if the book comes up in the classroom I'm going to ask the kids to consider other angles, try to guide them to think a bit more critically about it. But I've heard other creative adults talk about how it sort of fed into their self esteem issues and how they always had so much demanded of them until they were burnt out. If I could rewrite the story - the Rainbow Fish was admired by others, but found they didn't enjoy their scales alone, and through their own choice decided to share them so they could see that shine in others. It aligns with Shelby's vision of the story too I think.
There is an alternate ending that can be found online, "The Rainbow Fish Keeps His Scales" by Topher Payne. Instead of giving away his scales, the rainbow fish points out how each of the other fish has their own unique traits that already makes them special.
For the mother of pearl luster, I think you have put it on too thick and from what I remember my teacher always had us use cotton swabs and apply in circular motions careful not to be too be to uniform in your motions and only go over an area once especially after it starts getting sticky. I remember using it a few times and always loved the results.
Thank you so much for your help! I have never seen other potters use it in my community and all the information is so diverse and different out there. I’ll give it another go and see what happens with your tips!
I also remember listening to teachers read the rainbow fish and seeing it at school during reading week in elementary school (primary school) and maybe what I took out of it was sad a little bit but looking back on a lot of 90s classics they all seam really sad. The rainbow fish kind of had this underlying message that if you don't change for others and give them everything of yourself then you will always be lonely. Maybe that is a little bit dark and heavy of a meaning, but I am still unlearning that message that I always had to be selfless and giving and that I wasn't aloud to just be myself with people without judgement. I like your message a lot better and I'm glad that sharing with this community brings you joy.
Oh gosh that is so dark! I totally get it though! It’s like giving your light to others because others are jealous of your sunshine only to lose what makes you special 😭🥺 that’s so sad!! I always saw it as a special skill that the fish shared with their friends so everyone could use that skill, at first the fish is outcast but as it shares what makes them different to others, the others share the joy and acceptance for what makes that fish different. It could be either really dark or a really nice message depending on how you look at it 🥺
This is the meaning I always took from that book too - I’m a preschool teacher and I refuse to read that book to my class as I always thought it was morbid 😳
That's how I saw it! I knew it was meant to be about sharing, but it made me so angry because the fish literally gives away pieces of itself. It teaches kids to make yourself less to please others.
I always thought the message behind the Rainbow fish was really sad too. I always thought the message was really selfish. Why can't we just appreciate the beauty of the fish without "owning" a piece of him. Maybe its also a metaphor for the environment? who knows?
When you opened the goldfish mould my jaw actually dropped! It's so gorgeous! I agree about the mother of pearl, it's pretty but a little underwhelming. That gold though, wow! I thought I loved those skulls before, that gold really took them to another level. This was an amazing episode all the way around, I really missed not having one last week but I totally get it.
The message in Rainbow fish was a product of it's time. I see what the book is trying to say but I can see the darkness in how it says it too. There is the story about sharing things you have that others don't that is positive, there is the aspect of sharing of yourself but not to the extent you lose yourself (keeping some for yourself ie a scale). But this only works if you equate the scales with clothing, money or unique talents that can be shared with others. These are all things you can choose to keep for yourself but may find yourself richer for sharing. The problem is scales are part of a fish's body and that outward beauty of that body is used as the point of difference and that muddies the story. If you view scales as part of the fish and not clothing there is the underlying message that you need to mute your beauty or give bits of you away to be accepted. There is also the element of the other fish only be willing to be friends if they get something from the Rainbow fish that is disturbing and sends more mixed messages. So I totally see both interpretations in the same story. I remember that mixed messages like that were quite common in the 90's and being told to be less you in effort to fit in was a common theme. I think there is a bigger goldfish mold as well? I think I remember seeing one that was bigger that looked about the same but I am not sure. Your interpretation turned out lovely. I love watching your artwork.
This is the best deconstruction of these themes I have read in the comments so far. I was always on the side of it being about sharing what make each person great so every person becomes a little better and brighter and never took it as dulling one persons shine. Reading these comments it absolutely makes sense but was never the message we were taught or what I took from it 🥺 it is rather dark. It leads a little bit into society and how we take something wonderful and pull it a part until there is nothing really left just because we don’t accept it or we have selfish individual needs. It’s kind of really sad when you think of it like that in terms of the environment, shining stars, different cultures, people with unique talents. Thank you so much for doing such a clear and concise analysis of both sides of this story! I really appreciate it and since doing this video it has really changed I have seen the messaging from this children’s book 🥺
I never read the book, but enjoyed reading the comments. Should a child’s book be that inscrutable, I wonder? It’s really good to re-examine one’s beliefs or interpretations. Not everybody is willing to or capable of doing that. I have a simple example: grow where you are planted. So ubiquitous, but it’s only sometimes good advice for flowers. WTH would a girl/woman grow where SHE WAS planted? I think: grow wherever you want. It’s amazing how these ideas get planted. Ha!
I love your videos! For the MOP luster you just have to buff it with a soft cloth and it will become iridescent... not glittery though. It's always pretty subtle. Keep up the great work!!!!
Mother of Pearl goes white and chalky when it’s a little too thick. I have been using it and other lusters/fired metallics for about 30 years and this is across the board, every manufacturer I’ve ever encountered. We own a studio now in Nevada, USA and still use it pretty frequently. Gold and lusters are easily contaminated too, so if you aren’t using a dedicated brush for each gold/luster that has never been used for painting before you may find other problems with those products. We also use essence to clean our brushes to avoid the contamination, especially with the gold. That stuff is expensive here in the states, lol.
Thank you so much for jumping onto the extended cuts! I really appreciate it and I am so happy you are enjoying them more. I enjoy the longer format more as well!
I looked up the mother of pearl luster directions and fell down a rabbit hole of forums. Some said it needed to be fired at a lower temperature than the gold luster. Then another said it should be applied lightly or slightly diluted. Cone 20 seemed to be the general consensus as opposed to the 16-18 for gold. It seems quite a few people ended up with the same problem as you did. But continue please because the result is stunning! And mix the bottle well before application. Great job! 👏
I went down the same rabbit hole! Given it was my first time I followed the recommended cone from the site I bought it from! The thing is, I am not sure what I should be expecting because this doesn't look like snot like they said in the forums but it also isn't very punchy and super shimmery! So I am so unsure and a lot of other photos of the lustre show a variety of different glazes it has gone on top of which could also impact it! I think I might try the Cone 020 now I have tested the gold lustre temp! Thank you so much! I definitely have to keep playing but I am really hoping I can get some good results soon!
It's been a long time since I read that book but I don't remember it being about sharing at all? Lol maybe I'm just remembering it wrong but I remember that the fish kept giving its scales to the other fish because of how mean they were to the rainbow fish out of jealousy and then the fish is bare at the end and I thought I was about not changing who you are just because other people don't like you or to get people to like you. Either way so nostalgic I love this peice 💛
I found a link for the second part of the mould. But my comment keeps not posting. It's some extra fin pieces on the base... Presumably they make it sit more level. 👍🏻
I knew, being a three-piece, that it was going to be something good...but wow! I'm blown away! It's so beautiful! That was totally worth the hiatus! LOL! (I looked around quick and can't see what the other part would be. Everything showing the mold and the fish show them as is, even if it says the mold is a Set. My guess is it might be a second fish, because everything has the fish set on a surface like you have it.) You decorated them so beautifully! I recognize the fish, but never knew the story. Must have become popular after I was out of Elementary school or something. The big book at the time was The Very Hungry Catepillar. I was a big fan of The Giving Tree and Where The Wild Things Are, myself.
It is so gorgeous! I am so excited for all the other larger moulds that are hiding in the lower shelves. The level of detail and shaping this piece has is truly gorgeous and the outside mould is so deceiving and basic for what is hidden inside! Who knows what the other larger pieces could be! It was definitely popular at the same time as the hungry caterpillar those were read hand in hand! I am so surprised no-one has been able to find anything yet maybe it is another fish!
Looking at bisque fired fish made from this mould online, the second mould must be fins that go under the back on that smooth section so it should be quite a small mould I think.
Aww these are always such fun!! Even when you find some…uh, stranger ones, you maintain a good attitude & give it a go. Your positivity is infectious!! This one is super cute, I can’t wait to see what you dooooo!!! 💖
Your channel popped up in my recommended so I've been binging your mould reveals. I really like the fish but wow I LOVE those skulls! Especially the gold highlights, the white one with the gold horns is my favourite 😍
Wow! That gold luster is incredible. I would be tempted to use it a lot… and those fish are super cute. Love the creative risks you take and how you share the entire journey with us. ❤️
Found your channel and have binged on all your episodes over this past week. Great content and wonderful videos. Thanks for every upload. Your enthusiasm and the excitement in your voice always makes me smile. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much!! This is such a lovely compliment and it really does encourage me to keep doing them and sharing the joy with you all here! Thank you for your support and I hope you liked this weeks addition to the series!
@@ShelbySherritt Absolutely. It’s the magic of not knowing what will come out of the mold and then the artistry you place on top of it. A mix of the past with the present, wrapped in such a lovely passion for the craft. Keep up the great work, always staying tuned.
I'm so in love with the last skull you showed, the brown one. The value of the underglaze and luster are close enough that the eye doesn't really catch the gold until you move it around. Almost like the gold is natural to the object, like gold within ore. The yellow and pink are fabulous too, gorgeous work as always!
Wow Shelby, thank you for your amazing journey ( I missed you, but am very glad you took a mental health break ). Showing the molds then your experimentation makes the videos double special. Your color choice and reference to a fond memory are an inspiration. I might like to see that as a goldfish or beta fish in the future ( a second series, revisiting molds in a new way 🤞🏻). Also the gold on the cow skulls elevated them to a new height, so cute. 💜
Thanks for sharing your joy! Love the rainbow fish, it’s a shame you were disappointed with the pearl lustre, it does have a subtle sheen though. The gold lustre is fabulous.
It was a shame! I think I had too high expectations for it based on the gold lustre results. I was sort of expecting that kind of brightness and transformation on it but it still does have a shimmer.
My comments kept disappearing but I found it for sale online and the other part is another fin that points straight back from the body. There’s also another fish of the same design but smaller but that’s the next number up.
I've been sad the last week. So, I binge watched all of these. I love the passion you have for your art. It helped me smile this week. I look forward to seeing the rest of your reveals. Thank you for these lovely videos. ❤
I love this one SO MUCH! My 5 year old son watched this whole thing with me and he also absolutely LOVED your work!🌈 I was read this story as a little girl all the time and my mom was kind enough to give me the same book I was read and now I read that one to my children🥰
I thought it's called rainbow fish bc the silver scales are holographic on the cover. It was mesmerising as a kid, it even had a different shiny texture 😊
You are absolutely right!! As I was talking about the Pearl Lustre I said it in the voiceover that it shimmers different colours in different light and that makes so much sense why its a Rainbow Fish now!
I remember that book in school in Washington state. But i took completely a different look on it. I dont know why but especially when i got older and thought of thay book.i felt like it was teaching us to always give. And i used to be a paid caregiver now just a non paid one to my mom and i was always foving it my all until I had nothing else to give. And thats also what i got out of the story. The fish gave everyrhing to everyone else, for everyone else to be happy.
Love this. Only info I found is that 1573 is the same fish but smaller. The one place that sells this mold just showed the fish no pic or mention of another piece.
My daughter loved the Rainbow Fish book when she was little! You did an amazing job bringing it to life! What serendipity to have just the right mold for it!
The fish are adorable! so many possibilities for colors and patterns. I did a quick search and it looks like the extra piece that is missing is another set of small fins that the fish rests on. Also the gold luster on the skulls really makes them pop! They were lovely before, but its amazing what that one little extra thing can bring to a piece! Keep up the beautiful work!
Wow what a stunning mold! And those skulls look great with the gold accents as well. Your creativity continues to surprise and amaze me. Fancy goldfish are a type of goldfish, as far as I know. They're the chubby ones with huge eyes, short bodies and large fins.
I found the 2 parts of the fish for sale together on ebay. The second mould is tiny and for some extra fins that go on the underside. The gold lustre is so effective! Beautiful!
@@ShelbySherritt so much!! Mugs, tea light holders, 3 tier cake stand I’m trying out different colours techniques and just having fun I would love to be able to do more than paint but I love it :)
I never realized that the Rainbow Fish book was popular all over the world. Im Canadian and it’s taught here too. It was read to me, I read it to my kids and they read it to their toys. It’s a classic.
When they used MOP at the shop I worked at, they used a messed up brush and just scrumbled it on very lightly. (Scrumble is kind of like scribbling but twisting the brush as you move across the piece). The brush looked like it abused with bristles going every direction. Less is more I wish I still had an example of it. I wonder how the rainbow fish would look after a raku firing. Though I wonder if it is too delicate.
I saw the mother of pearl on the scales immediately. I thought the effect came through the video well. 🙂 I love all the accents you did. They all look great.
I didn’t want to do gold because the rainbow fish doesn’t have gold but the temptation was very high and with the results of the lustre I have regrets of not doing it!
Still beautiful, and subtle lustre does add depth, one of my favourite pieces. So talented, you stick with your choices, it what makes you and your work personal and unique x
Wow, I'm so glad I came across your channel. I didn't even think this was a thing. I wish you would have linked what you used in the description. I'll do some searching, maybe you have a video about this kind of thing. :D
The children's book that's been coming back to me a lot lately is "Badger's Bring Something Party", which has a similar message about sharing what makes you special.
The 'stand' part that you're missing is extra fins which lean the fish forward a bit more keeping the tail off the table.
THAT'S why the picture I found of the mould didn’t match with hers! 😁

My husband and I laugh about how The Rainbow Fish seems like a Communist propaganda book. I agree that it's right up there with The Giving tree on the weirdness scale for books.
As a kid/artist, the message of the story went right over my head, but I loved the book because the art was pretty and I loved the sparkly scales.
Ya, as a kid i loved the art of the book but I didn't like the body horror vibes i got from the story to the point i put sticky notes over the words.
You're not alone. It didn't _hurt_ me as a child but I did think it was strange and sounded painful.
@@ShelbySherrittHaha yes I noticed afterwards. Your artworks are stunning as always. Love your videos! 😊
So excited when you first showed the Koi. Absolutely love the skulls. Having all of them would make a great wall display. Thank you for sharing.
My most favorite mould so far I'm in love with the shape, details of the cast and absolutely everything about this mould ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥💕💞💕💞💕♥
The Rainbow Fish is my favorite book from childhood 🥰
I adore the fish! Such a great size and so very versatile in how it could be painted!
It is a lovely size! So many ideas 💓
Wow! I actually gasped when I saw the fish reveal and then again when I saw the gold lustre. Amazing!!
I love them all but the mugs that came out of the mill stole my heart
My kingdom for one of those gold-luster cow skulls!! I love how they turned out (and I love the fish too ☺️ )
Love this. Only info I found is that 1573 is the same fish but smaller. The one place that sells this mold just showed the fish no pic or mention of another piece.
My daughter loved the Rainbow Fish book when she was little! You did an amazing job bringing it to life! What serendipity to have just the right mold for it!
I absolutely love this mold!! I'd love a kiln fired goldfish friend for my large aquarium!! Great job!! So many possibilities💗🐟🐠🐡
I love this mould! The form is so beautiful! I make rainbow slab build fishes so this was really special for me!! 🥰
Oh wow! I would love to see your work! It sounds so lovely and wonderful!
I absolutely loved that book as a kid. Thank you for the memories!
This is my favorite one so far! I loved Rainbow Fish as a kid. And those SKULLS!!!! Honestly the gold takes them to a new level. So impressed!
I audibly gasped when you revealed! It is stunning!!
HANDS DOWN, these Fish and Bull Skulls are my faves yet!!!!
Wow what a stunning mold! And those skulls look great with the gold accents as well. Your creativity continues to surprise and amaze me.
Fancy goldfish are a type of goldfish, as far as I know. They're the chubby ones with huge eyes, short bodies and large fins.
Absolutely love your style 🥰
AHHH Thank you! So lovely of you to say!!
I found the 2 parts of the fish for sale together on ebay. The second mould is tiny and for some extra fins that go on the underside.
The gold lustre is so effective! Beautiful!
I love your work! You have inspired me to start pottery painting myself and I love it!
This is absolutely amazing! What have you made so far!?
@@ShelbySherritt so much!! Mugs, tea light holders, 3 tier cake stand I’m trying out different colours techniques and just having fun I would love to be able to do more than paint but I love it :)
Gorgeous 🥰💕..luv luv so much..
Thankyou for sharing your heart..
You are a blessing and we celebrate with you..

That is a gorgeous mold. My favourite mold yet.
I looked up this mould online and found other artists using the mould. It's so cool to see how different artists apply techniques to the same mould
The gold luster is gorgeous!! The fish are adorable!
What a gorgeous fish! I love that you used the story as inspiration!
So beautiful. I love goldfish and koi and betas, reminded me of betas too. Loved the rainbow fish book. Used to read it to my kids.
I really like the goldfish mold, the cows horns are nice too, I love the gold. Your artistry is amazing!
These fish would honestly be so amazing painted up and covered in the opalescent glaze that would be stunning !!!
I feel like that fish is perfect for garden decoration
It absolutely would be!
I found the mold on debmark, the 2nd part is another fin that sits under the fish and acts as a stand
Oh I love these fishes, still waiting on kitties.
I have my fingers crossed there is some kind of kitty!
I absolutely love this mold! So many possibilities!
The gasp I let out when you revealed the gold luster.... That is so stunning, especially the one with the completely gold horns
Heck yes i had the exact same thought of the rainbow fish before you painted it !!!!!! Yessssss Shelby love it
Yay I am so glad you had the exact same thought as I did! Thank you so much!
What an exciting surprise to wake up to! The gold luster is amazing!
Love love love this mould. I would just use the gold on scales.
I actually gasped when you opened it!
I absolutely LOVE the fish mold!!!💖💖💖
I never realized that the Rainbow Fish book was popular all over the world. Im Canadian and it’s taught here too. It was read to me, I read it to my kids and they read it to their toys. It’s a classic.
This young lady is absolutely adorable, we really like to see a Q & A from you Shelby.
Oh wow! What a beauty. 🐠
Thank you so much! I am so happy you like it!
That gold luster is amazing!
I mean, the fish was already beaauuutiful little thing. But skulls!! Woooow
Oh I love this one!!! So beautiful and love that you did the Rainbow Fish!
I’m absolutely going to steal the word “scrumble”. Fantastic! Much love 💕🐝🇺🇸☃️
Ooh. Raku would be very cool. I’d use a groggy slip though because the porcelain might be too delicate.
Oh my god i loved that book so fricken much
This mould is so stunning!
It is absolutely so gorgeous!
I wonder if the lustre comes in a silver? I remember Rainbow Fish having silver sparkle scales!
My favourite creative youtuber at the moment! Your killing it! 🤗 xxx
Omg amazing!! My daughter is in love with your work like I am and I can’t wait to show her this episode.
Oh my gosh that is so precious! Thank you so much for watching!
Oh wow this is absolutely amazing
Thank you so much for your love!
It's Rainbow Fish! I loved hearing your interpretation of the story too 🌈 🐠
Definitely dint be so disappointed. They look amazing! 😍
I love those fish! My favorite mold so far! The yellow skull looks amazing! 💛
This was my favorite one yet!! The Rainbow Fish !! and the gold luster... wow :D
Yes. Gold luster. Spot on!!!!
I love this magic fish!! And the cow skulls are so cool!
I saw the mother of pearl on the scales immediately. I thought the effect came through the video well. 🙂 I love all the accents you did. They all look great.
As soon as you revealed the mould I instantly thought of the rainbow fish! 😍
Such a beautiful piece, amazing way to start the series again! 💜
i think you could stick on pieces of holographic flake to make a perfect rainbow fish but the colorful scales still get the point across for sure
It's Friday already... I'm so happy... ❤❤❤
Personally I'd go and just do a few scales with the gold, but hey, it's absolutely beautiful!
This is my favorite one so far!
What a beautiful work, i like your fish🥰👍❤
Thank you very much! I am so happy you do!
