I’m very surprised that you dislike Heero but like Setsuna, which is basically a modernized Heero. In fact 00 is just Wing redone. I highly urge you to rewatch Gundam Wing again. Your critique regarding Heero is a bit unfair. He’s actually a lot more complex than you think. He comes across as being emotionless or stoic at first but he’s beeb trained to be so. Throughout the series his stoic personality starts to unravel and he becomes more human. It’s stated pretty early on by his professor that he’s actually very kind hearted. You have to look at all his subtle behaviors.
To be fair that opinion is based on my initial assessment. Which was based over 20 years ago when I first saw Gundam Wing. So I was very young at the time. Compared to the adult who recently watched Gundam 00. I think my opinion would somewhat change once I re-watch Wing. It just felt like that overall series prioritized style more than it did substance. Which worked at that time.

There are even crossover games where Heero and Setsuna meet. Heero is one of the few characters who Setsuna highly respected. There is an interaction between them where Heero tells Setsuna that he has surpassed the Gundam. This is a big deal to Setsuna as one of his reoccurring lines is “I am Gundam.” If you remember in his childhood he was saved by the 0 Gundam which he viewed as like a god. If you are into Manga, I’d actually recommend reading Gundam Wing Glory of Losers. It’s basically a remake of the anime but they fixed a lot of plot holes and improved on some of the characters and story.

I do like how the boys developed their feelings based on the ideals and steps towards said ideals that the girls did. It didn’t feel like he likes her only because she likes him.
Maybe Orphans didn't do well because it tried too hard to be dark? I didn't like it either. Also, the Age Gundams are just in one series. Kinda spoilery if I say more so I'll leave it at that.😂
