- Porto Venere (harbour of Venus) together with the Cinque Terre is a World Heritage Site, situated on the Ligurian coast between Pisa and Genova. Long before the powerful maritime Republic of Genoa , 900 years ago, recognised its strategic and economic importance, the Romans settled here and used Porto Venere as a port of call on their routes to Spain and Gaul.
On the left you see the church of St Peter, built on the remains of a Roman pagan temple, and on the right you see the tower-houses built to serve as a defence wall against the attacks the town had to endure.
