Recap of what you just watched!
Ways to help your dogs itchy and allergic skin:
In this video, "Why do dogs lick and chew their paws," we left you with a crucial insight - allergies, a condition known as Atopy, are the leading cause of your furry friend's itchiness!
Atopic dermatitis triggers an overactive immune response to allergens. These can range from hypersensitivity to their own skin's bacteria and yeast, environmental allergies like grass or air pollutants, to pests like fleas or insect bites, and sometimes even dietary factors. Some breeds may even have genetic predispositions to hair loss issues.
But fear not! Let's dive into the simple steps and remedies you can explore with your veterinarian to bring relief to your dog's itchy skin.
Number 1: Medicated Baths (Every 3 Days or Weekly)
Prescribed Chlorhexidine or Ketoconazole shampoo from your vet can keep your pet's skin clean and provide soothing relief.
Number 2: Allergy Pills and Injections
While over-the-counter Benadryl (1 mg per lb) may offer some relief, many pet owners find it less effective. Here's where your veterinarian can step in with stronger options.
Apoquel (Oclacitinib): A commonly prescribed allergy pill that works wonders for seasonal or long-term allergy management. It can also be used for short-term situations, like flea allergies, without the side effects of steroids.
Atopica (Cyclosporine): Another powerful medication that effectively treats Atopic dermatitis and other autoimmune diseases in dogs.
Cytopoint (CADI): An allergy injection that controls itchiness for 4 to 8 weeks. It targets and neutralizes an itch-triggering cytokine called IL-31, making it an excellent option for managing Atopy.
Number 3: A Course of Antibiotics
For dogs with hotspots or severe skin infections due to obsessive scratching or licking, a 2 to 4 week course of antibiotics may be. necessary. It's crucial to prevent bacterial resistance, which might require culture testing.
    Number 4: Steroids
Steroids, once a go-to for itch relief, are now considered a last resort due to the availability of safer allergy medications. They can have adverse effects on your dog's health if used long-term but are sometimes used alongside antibiotics for short-term relief.
    Number 5: Anxiety Medications
To prevent self-inflicted trauma from excessive itching, consider short-term anxiety medications like trazodone, valium, or gabapentin. These help keep your pet calm while their antibiotics or allergy pills take effect.
Lastly, prioritize monthly flea prevention and consult a Veterinary Dermatology specialist for accurate diagnosis and treatment of your pet's skin condition. Their expertise can make a world of difference in your furry companion's comfort and well-being.
