How Do I Keep My Orchid Leaves Shiny & Healthy? Watch Me Clean an Orchid's Leaves

  • Watch me clean the leaves on one of my orchids. My cleaner recipe is:
16 oz spray bottle filled with water
1 teaspoon mild liquid dish soap, free and clear of dyes and fragrances. If you live near a Kroger, their Simple Truth dish soap that is fragrance free is what I recommend
12-15 drops Peppermint or Lavender essential oil
I go over lots of info in this video, such as why leaves appear dull and dingy, and the reasons why you want to keep them clean.
Happy growing and many blessings! Amy :)

Amy, I just love all your gorgeous orchids and plants. I've had chemical spots on one leaf of my Phal. Mituo King Bellina and what I like to use is a little bit of baking soda with an even smaller amount of gentle detergent and water. Baking soda is also good for getting rid of powdery mildew. I have a question for you, if you don't mind my asking. In previous posts you showed some of your husband's
water color artwork, which was so gorgeous! Would you please give us a view of more of his works of art, thank you.

Encouraging video as always Amy. I've just suffered dozens of lost orchids from my over 300 assorted plants. Unfortunately, a mealy bug and scale infection got way out of control, along with a serious sunburn to many. I'm grieving and trying to salvage the remains. Sometimes life just gets out of control. 😪 Anyway, I would like to add that although I agreed with you regarding leaf shine products, they do have one awesome positive when neccessary. A light misting is a wonderfully safe way to kill mealy bugs without harming your orchids. (My situation was different due to absence and neglect.) :(

Thank you for a blessing and you as well sister. My question is . I bought a beautiful Orchid at least I thought but as she was here a week later I noticed a mushroom which I removed and hasn't returned I can tell my plant is still not feeling its best and I'm wondering if it is safe to water with diluted lemon juice and ? to kill bacteria in soil or and bugs on roots ? , She has a large bloom of purple flowers and new leaves are coming 💜 Thank you

Hi Amy!!🤗🤗 I had forgotten that I had asked you this question! Thank you for sharing the information and advice in the video🌸. I have some Bonner’s peppermint soap without additives that I can use for this. I clean the underside of the leaves, I have heard people say not to because it damages the Stomata but dusty Stomata would be getting blocked anyway? I often wash orchid leaves under a running tap or wash using a mild feed solution. Foliar feed and a wash, like killing two birds with one stone! ( Urghh…who made up these sayings? Why would you want to kill two birds with a stone?) I have been spraying my orchids with Epsom salts and adding Calcium Nitrate to the feed solution - the leaves have taken on a shine and plumped up. I am going to busy this weekend cleaning house and orchids!
Thank you again my friend across the pond, stay well, sending you and family tons of ❤️😇s. Ps did you ever get those Scones?

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  Рік тому +1

Hi Sue! 🤗 I've been meaning to get to this video ever since you asked! I've also heard about clogging the stomata by cleaning the back of the leaves. It's never been an issue with mine. Dirt and dust can clog them if they're not cleaned. I think the key is to use a gentle solution. Great idea about spraying the leaves with fertilizer. I've heard that works. 😊 No scones yet...but my daughter has promised me some. Or you could just hop across the pond. I'll provide the coffee. Lol!☕☕☕ Many many blessings being sent your way....😇🙏🌷🌺🌻🌻🌻

Thank you very much for the update. I will pick up the peppermint oil at Rite Aid and Ivory dish soap. I bought my first orchid at Trader Joe’s. Omg I didn’t clean and repot. That orchid was so tight and the bark was so hard to get off. It’s now back with new bark and in a breathable plastic pot with slit on the sides then into a ceramic pot. I will watch your video on how to repot to see if I did it right. ♥♥

@@OrchidWhisperer in "comparison" to standard phals which we all grow "without many issues" (never as beautiful as yours though☺️)...less water, water more often with less/more, fertilizer strength comparison (ppm) light, cutting ✂️ old spikes or not, etc. In my experience my mini's roots were always the problem, just couldn't hold on to them and keep them flush and green after watering. Someone the other day what I did to keep my orchid leaves shiny and I didn’t know how to answer because I don’t do anything special, I just attributed it to having healthy plants. It must be the plant food that does it. I also run a humidifier and keep water off the leaves. Some of them are under lights and I wondered if that played a role. I also have Fullers Sunset.

I just watched your video on cleaning the leaves of the phalenopsis. Can i use olive oil on the leaves, and then wipe it off? I noticed you closed with a blessing. This blessing is used in all Jewish services for weddings, baby-namings, bar mitzvahs and Friday night services.

Olive oil will be too heavy to clean the leaves...just use some slightly soapy water and that will do the job. The blessing is my favorite. Have a great day!

My first 3-4 orchids I received over the last 4-5 years died…😢. I had no clue that these beauties need so much TLC. This past winter I purchased two mini Phillies and one is still with us and is beautiful and the other recently passed due to sun burn😢. I currently have one regular size and a mini. My regular size has absolutely no roots not a one! But she has two leaves that seem pretty healthy…my first question to you is what method have you found to be the best when attempting to get an orchid to grow roots. I currently have her in bark with a piece of yarn tied to the stump. I also have a small humidifier going right into the crown area. Also can I put the peppermint essential oil into my humidifier? Not sure if this is ok. I have so many more questions but I don’t want to overload you so I will ask a different time…my orchids are forever thankful to you for helping to save them!! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge!!😇

Hi! You might try to get some roots growing in New Zealand sphagnum moss. I have a repotting playlist on my channel that will help you. :) I've never put peppermint oil in my humidifier around my orchids. I don't see why that would be a problem, though. Thanks so much for your sweet comment...happy growing! Amy

    • @faithgnes3105

Yes sphagum moss around the stem and keep it moist and it will grow roots like crazy also if you have any remaining parts of leaves that died , peel them away from the stem and that helps tremendously.
