  • WQED explores one of America’s most treasured biking destinations. Consisting of two connecting trails, the C&O Canal Towpath (Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland) and the Great Allegheny Passage (Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh, PA), cyclists from all over the world are enjoying 335 uninterrupted miles of breathtaking scenery and fascinating history. Viewers will follow the trail with a diverse group of cycling tour guides, each of whom take us through a different section of the trail. Our “guides” include a young married couple - both military veterans; four women from Cleveland who founded the organization “Black Girls Do Bike”; a nature photographer; a trail volunteer, and others. www.wqed.org/ride

Watched both years ago and just now.
So, so beautiful scenery and so beautifully filmed!
Wish elementary schools were to show this to potential future cyclists.

Thank you for this documentary! I like it very much to see back the scenery a biked trough.
Five years ago I biked the whole trail in my one, coming from the Netherlands and visit my son and his family in Bethel Park. Then i drove further along the Allegheny river trail. The ahead Lake Erie and Niagara falls , then over Canadian side of Niagara river to an along Lake Erie, back to Holland form Toronto.
I shall never forgot this wonderful bike trip and when people here in Holland think its dangerous to bike in the States I tell them how good the bike trails are in the States.

A great video - cant wait to visit and ride along the trail as part of my ride from Yorktown to San Francisco. I know how wonderful an off road bike ride can be. In the UK I live 3 miles from the Trans-Pennine Trail which follows old railway lines from the 1800's. Enjoy your bike everyone!

I just realized that I didn't finish this. I did today, love the fall colors. You mentioned about running into not so nice people. Since I suppose that you ride alone, do you take anything for your personal protection.😅

Wonderful, wonderful documentary. I watched with great interest, given that a friend and I are riding the 2 trails in September, going from Pittsburgh to my front door in Alexandria, VA (via the George Washington Memorial Parkway). Seeing this video has me primed and anxious to go.

I'm at peace with myself watching this doc, but I'm also anxious for spring to come. I live in these PA. Mountains where your happiness is what you accept. I reject chaos and division.

This was a great documentary! I've ridden the C&O Trail- I remember the tunnel riding up to it and my friends and I look at it and think its not that bad even though the sign said to dismount and get your flashlight out, well we ignored the sign (for a few feet) then realized that it was narrow, then dark so we were off our bikes and pulling out the flashlight. We also didn't realize how long it was (come to find out it was almost a mile long). Someday I want to do the C&O trail and the GAP trail all at the same time. I wish you would have included footage of the hiker/biker camps. We had started in Cumberland, MD and the hiker/biker camps were well kept, but the closer to DC they were not well kept and the trails were rocky and not as well kept. But after watching this it looks like they might have made some improvements along those parts of the path. Hopefully someday I will get to bike both paths! Thanks again for this video so much to see and look forward to seeing!

Great video. Considering this for this summer. Any suggestions? I would like to know what you think about your bike choice. Based and trail qualities and distance what would you suggest?

I've ridden the entire trail many times and would recommend a bike with 700 x 35 tires. The tires are wide enough to handle the rougher portions of the trail and the tall tire covers more ground with each pedal stroke. A mountain bike is slower and overkill for this trail. I used a cyclocross bike and it did great.

Are there any groups out there trying to connect all these beautiful bike trails across the country. I am from Northern California we're beautiful bike trails all through Sonoma County period would be great for all these bike trails to be connected one day as one gigantic bike interstate system.

The water from the pumps is horrible tasting, and the trains at night prevent you from sleeping. Those parts were not fun at all.

I rode both in '17. GAP is closer to the rivers it runs along. The C&O is tree-root filled until you can get on to the asphalt section of the Western Maryland Rail Trail. The ride from Hancock to DC is beautiful.
