Just got back from riding the route, had a great time riding between 70 and 120km a day over 8 days. I did film along the route as I went, but it will be my first shot and putting together a video on a trip, so may take some time to edit and post. Wanted to thank Huw and Annie for putting the ride together as I had a wonderful time. Top job.
SOOO glad you posted this video! I'm biking the Danube with 2 buddies this year and never had heard of this trail. This is now on my bucket list. Hopefully the lads will want to join me. All the best
wonderful video. I have been riding a Salsa Mukluk fat bike for the past 7 years pretty much daily. Such a great bike. Building another wheel set for it now for skinnier tyres.

It's a new one, I've been piecing it together since covid. Just trying to plug a hole in Scottish long-distance routes using some unfairly neglected bits of riding :)
Looks great and downloaded the route for Komoot - but half of it is on roads like the A9 (one of the most dangerous roads in Britain), so slightly put off!
I think you will find about 10km of it is on the northern secion of the A9, on sections where there are great sight lines. We would not have used it if there was alternatives and we felt dafe riding those sections. There are no other bits on fast roads and less than half is tarmac so not sure where you sre getting that from..
@@annieleoutside6044 put the route in Komoot and it says 50% on roads or state roads. The A9 is no joke, especially with the increase in boy racers due to NC500. Pity there's no alternative.
I've found Komoot to be pretty unreliable with its surface definitions in Scotland. GPXing the route to an OS map is better although we know that those ==== tracks can be anything from smooth tarmac to rough single track!! Many other bikepacking routes keep away from the main roads but often mean you'll be doing hike-a-bike instead....
Stunning and just wonderful looking at overview of the route. In terms of bikes, what’s the minimum tyre size you’d recommend for this a just wondering if my old Dawes Galaxy would be suitable?
Looks immense this route. Been planning a route up from Edinburgh for a while and this has made me more keen to get out on it. What tent are you using here for this trip? because you dont have any panniers to carry it on and I cant tell where it is stashed on your bike. must be super light and small.
@Annie Le Outside Thanks for the info. Im sure the dyneema packs much smaller than my dads old canvas tent from the 80s ive been using. An upgrade for bike packing is now essential.
Better weather in Scotland? I was there in May. And there was still snow. 🥶 But it is great there. I loved it very much and someday, who knows, I would like to visit it again 👍
@@annieleoutside6044 Great stuff -thanks for the reply Annie. I was mainly concerned if there was a specific reason you'd chosen north-south - looks like it'll be a reverse route for me then! Be happy to hear the stories of anyone who's done it already😎
@@Ricky_T We prefer gettting the transport faff over with first, and thought it would be pretty cool to ride into the city to finish. But that was it, there will be some bits that ride slightly nicer going south, but there will also be some that will be better going north, and i guess outside spring, theres more chance of a tailwind going north.
@@annieleoutside6044 Thanks for the reply again and sharing your thought process Annie. Yes the tailwind thought had crossed my mind too. I did LEJOG last year rather than JOGLE for that reason, a friend had done JOGLE a few years before and had suffered badly with headwinds!
In the early 90's I was Chargehand mason at Arbroath Abbey, we looked after St Vigeans, Eassie, St Orlands and Aberlemno pictish stones... Many haven't found St Orlands due to the mad farmer pulling out the signpost with his tractor, and I'll bet Aberlemno is still getting "chalked" lol... Eassie was protected by glass... But fine examples indeed!
I’m doing the Hebridean way next week (April 2023) The hardest part so far was trying to arrange rail travel whilst having a bicycle. We really do have the worst train service that does not accommodate cyclist customers 😡 It really is bad
glorious production of wildness as far as the eye can see

I can recommend Orro gravel bikes, but you can’t really go wrong with most brands these days.
Need to put this on the bucket list 🙌
Totally bucketworthy
Thanx to this, my fiancée and I will take on this route... awesome!
This route would have made a great 3-4 part series. Just over 9 minutes doesn't do the country justice.

I would love to do this! I have been told I am a Pict. 23 and me confirms that too; 98%Celt and 2%Neanderthrall. Even have hemochromatosis.
The Picts were the native people of Scotland before the Celts came from Ireland around 1000BC. The Celts invaded and replaced the Picts.
"The Orkneys" is the tell-tale sign of a person who doesn't know the place or its situation.
Orcadians need to get over themselves! They don't like Soothmoothers and they don't even like eachother!
