  • This rescued sea otter has been named Corky for the way he was floating at the surface when he was found. He was first reported in distress by several sources including Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society. Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre staff, together with officers from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, rescued the badly injured adult male sea otter near Vargas Island on the west coast of Vancouver Island on August 13, 2015.
The Aquarium’s head veterinarian, Dr. Martin Haulena, says when Corky was found he appeared very bloated and unable to dive. After transporting him to the Rescue Centre in Vancouver, the veterinary team found the sea otter had extensive subcutaneous emphysema (air trapped in the layer under his skin). Dr. Haulena says their initial diagnostics indicated blunt force trauma, possibly from a boat strike, that fractured the rib and led to the collapse of a lung.
The sea otter is currently receiving supportive care, regular meals and pain management at the Rescue Centre. Dr. Haulena says everything is being done to ensure he has the best chance for a successful rehabilitation for the eventual release back into local waters. As with all marine mammals rescued by the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, any eventual decision about Corky’s release will be made by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Hello VanAqua/MMRC. Did Corky recover from his injuries, and was he released? You do amazing work with rescues and caring for mammals such as Corky. I was at your aquarium years ago, and unfortunately have not been back on subsequent visits to YVR. Thank you, from Regina, Saskatchewan 💗

Is he "Corky", the one that ever been released back into the wild in 2012? I mean, the same "Corky"?

Awe. Poor little guy is not feeling too good at the moment. I’m guessing some animal must have rammed him under water to break a bone. Shark maybe?
