    as with all dwarfing fig varieties, they were picked from a mutation from the parent tree. this mutation can be permanent or it can revert. i have several lmf and a few grew out of draft mutaion, others didnt. same as my little ruby. little miss figgy came from Violet de Bordeaux. and little ruby came from Chicago Hardy. so if your tree grows out of its mutation, its growth returns to parent growth habit, but fruits remain smaller. hope this helps

      Now that’s the kind of answer I was looking for! Thanks for taking the time to explain that. There are certainly multiple types of growth coming from this tree. It has the ability to be quite wonky. I had already took cuttings from the tree to the left of LMF, but I planted it directly next to VDB for that exact reason. Cool to have them next to one another. 😀

    I'm told it's good to put fig plants in pots to prevent spread (and I imagine that would contain it's growth too).

    My LMF is exactly like the one you have. Its literally the same height as yours, not as bushy though. Leaf structure is spot on as well. One of, if not the most vigorous growers out of all my figs. 🌴

    I have had a lil miss figgy for 2 years in ground and it barely grows. My other figs grow fast. My fignomenal is almost 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. I bet your lil niss figgy is something else.

      It’s definitely LMF. My source is extremely reliable, fruit has been compared, and so has leaf shape. My tree is also much older than yours, and it takes longer than 2 years for a fig tree to truly establish itself, though they do produce even in the first season. I’ve also had many other reliable fig collectors across the country stating the large size of their own LMF. Not saying yours isn’t LMF, however.

      I have miss figgy and it’s about 4 or 5 ft tall only and it’s in a pot. You’ve got another tree in lieu of this dwarf.

    Wow that is all I can say wow! I ran into you while searching for how big do little miss figgy trees grow too? Six years ago, I wanted a fig tree because I love figs so much. while searching a nursery online they were selling dwarf trees called little miss figgy and promised that they don't get very tall or wide and that they could grow in containers. Needless to say, I got hood winked and bought four, yes, I said four trees. They have grown way over what they said they would and just as wide. They are about 11 feet tall and 6 wide. I may have to dig up some as I don't want that many big, tall fig trees. However, the trees are always healthy looking and have very tasty figs. The problem is I don't have room for four trees, 2 will have to go bye bye.

    If I surround the Little Miss Figgy planting hole with a root barrier prior to transplanting, would that help keep LMF from eventually outgrowing its dwarf category -- but without sacrificing its health or fruit output? I'm hoping by forcing the roots down (they'll have to fight the clay soil if they want to go really deep), I can keep the tree from growing past 6 feet tall. Thoughts?

    We've just bought one of these trees (Seattle area) and it's at least 12 ft. tall! You can see it had fruit last season at the plant nursery, so we're hoping it likes our yard. Would love to have info about pruning it. Most of the branches start at about 4'-5' and it's not bushy like this one. Wondering what to expect in zone 8 once we get it in the ground and it starts to grow leaves.

    • @PlantFanatics
      @PlantFanatics  4 місяці тому

      Your tree will get quite large in zone 8 without pruning. Remember to prune it during the winter months to the size and shape that works for you guys.

    Haha, that’s hilarious. One season’s growth??? I was about to order one, but I’m in the UK where it won’t die back in winter so god knows how enormous it might grow here…

    Could it a mislabeled fig you got from wherever you sourced it?

    • @PlantFanatics
      @PlantFanatics  8 місяців тому +1

      This fig has been confirmed by multiple reliable sources. I’ve had ripe fruit from my tree as well as leaf shape confirmation. I’ve also had other reliable sources confirm the potential for height in their tree as well. Many of the people stating it’s dwarfing habit that I’ve talked to have only had the tree planted a couple years. Mine is much older than that. Time for establishment of fig trees is necessary like any other plant in the garden. 😀

      @@PlantFanatics good to know then. I wonder if keeping it container would constrain it's size. Your in ground one is massive! I've heard that Little Miss Figgy is a variant of Violette de Bordeaux, which is a smaller fig tree as well. That's why I was surprised by the the size of yours.
      I have a Fignomenal and so far it's staying small so far but it's not quite a year yet.

    If I understood correctly, you let this fig freeze and it sprouted again from the root in the spring. In that case, it is already a wild fig and has not retained the characteristics of a vegetatively propagated fig.
    Something similar happened to me with a bred fig that sprouted a new trunk from the root in the spring, because the old one froze. And she no longer bore the original figs, but only tiny - wild ones.
    However, I think that what you are growing is no longer bred for Little Miss Figgy.
    Of course I could be wrong.

    • @willyoupunchmeyesyesyes5866
      @willyoupunchmeyesyesyes5866 19 днів тому

      Figs usually are not grafted, so it should not matter if they freeze to ground. They are propagated by cuttings.
      Your fig clearly was grafted.

    The individual can do anything. If there is variation in size my guess would be that 2/3 fall in the 4-6 X 3-4 ft. size range, and the rest are outliers with greater and lesser extremes. The individual you purchased is obviously one of those extremes. I have no idea of the standard deviation so 2X the mean, like yours, may or may not be all that extreme, it could be a 1 in 8 chance. Why don't you plant 10 LFM from 10 varied sources, and then get back to us with how many giants you get. Until then, you're out of line claiming ALL LFM grow into giants.

      Right, plants are not carbon copies stamped out by some machine. If you look closely enough, you'll find individual differences.@@PlantFanatics

      It's important to consider the reasons behind using propagation through cuttings. This method ensures that the new plants are exact genetic replicas of the mother plant. Additionally, it might be insightful to explore the experiences of other growers. Many, including myself, have observed the plant's substantial growth habit.
