The SEC had the perfect opportunity to make its case in this new format, and the only team left standing is a former B12 team that SEC fans claimed all season to not be deserving of its ranking. The biggest flaw in the old system was the appearance of a stacked deck. It would be a horrible look for any conference to formalize stacking the playoffs on the heels of not being able to make the case on the field.
Also, for Dan to state "the 5th best team in the SEC is better than the 2nd best team in almost any conference" had me rolling with laughter. So, name the SEC school that fitted this criteria.
It may be true that the 5th best SEC school is closer to the best SEC school than it used to be because the best schools can't stockpile talent like they used to. I think we will see more parity in both the SEC and the BIG!. Illinois, Indiana, Ole Miss and South Carolina being good examples of this. I think some of the SEC voices think that because Ole Miss was closer to GA and 'Bama this year than before it was solely because Ole Miss improved, but it was also because GA and "Bama regressed some. The talent is getting spread around better than before. That makes the weaker teams better, and the old "best" teams, weaker.
So you're a 5 star recruit. The NIL money offer is basically the same between USC, Texas, Michigan, and Alabama. Recruit: Hmmmm.....I can either hang out in LA, Ann Arbor, Austin or Tuscaloosa??? Pretty sure Tuscaloosa is in last place. And that's another thing NIL money has changed. A recruit's choices.
@@Chewy-qg3ir But I think it will be the same eventually. There will be a cap, and all of the big schools will have no problem meeting it. The portal will be a bigger game changer because you won't see teams be able to stockpile depth like they could before, and injuries and mis-evaluating talent will play a bigger role.
do not confuse yourselves & substitute logic for greed. Money rules. Greed rules. The SEC & B10 have the most money & want that to continue. Forget who "deserves" what - the SEC & B10 want the money - they want the most money & they'll do whatever they can to manipulate that - not out of "deserving" but out of greed. Don't be naïve.
I like the 3 3 2 2 1. The SEC wanting Alabama S. Carolina and Ole Miss in is crazy. I might say ok Ole Miss but they would have looked like Tennessee in the playoffs. (Probably) Make the regular season count for something. 3 3 2 2 1 is good
There is no reason for the Power-4 conferences to compete for the same league playoff with the Group of Five. The gap in financial valuation of these conferences is staggering. G5 needs their own playoff.
In my humble opinion, i think the P4 should be paired into 2 comference that play for the Nat. The G5 should play for Bowls. I think this would all but guarantee no post season opt outs. The P4 teams that make the playoff field most likely wouldnt have any opt outs. I also believe none of the Bowls would have opt outs because the goal for those schools would be to win their Bowl.
Two weeks ago, this same argument was being used against the Big 12, the ACC, and about half of the Big 10. So, no, I'm not good with further cannibalizing as soon as we finally have a playoff for the benefit of a few brandwagonner fans who only watch SEC football.
It's not just them being overrated, but I like to think of them as that rich kid always getting everything they ever wanted in life. Finally their parents told them, "no" for the 1st time in their lives. Now all these sec heads are throwing temper tantrums because they've never been told no.
Doesn't matter, they have more fans, the only thing anybody cares about anymore is money and the sec has just as much as the big 10 and more than anybody else
If the playoffs is expanded and just take the top 14 or 16 teams, the P2 will get at least 4 teams anyway. No need for guaranteed spots. I would rather see 16 and all the teams play on campus the first weekend.
Get rid of the committee, rankings, strength of schedule, and the G5 ( let them form their own playoffs) Have the Power 4 Conferences agree to play a 12 game conference schedule. The top 8 schools from each conference will go to the playoffs to determine the Conference Champs. The 4 Conference Champs play for the National Championship. This will force Notre Dame to join a conference. Would have good competitive games every Saturday ( no more cake walk games) Good for TV ratings. Good for the fans. No more arguments about this conference should have X numbers of teams in the playoffs. Every conference gets 8 teams in the playoffs to decide the Conference Champ. Can’t get any fairer than that. Teams play their way to the playoffs and ultimately the chance to compete for a National Championship!
Dan, this CFP isn’t working. From its excessive size to the horrific seeding, the experiment has been a huge disappointment for the players, programs, and the fans. I’ve said it before, an elite 8 is clearly more than enough. For the good of the game. Think about it. Bigger isn’t always better. More to come.
As far as I'm concerned the only thing the current arrangement got wrong was giving the weaker conference champions the automatic bye, and giving PSU a higher seeding than they deserved because it was in (but lost rather handily) its conference championship. I'm fine with giving them a spot IF strength of schedule and record merit it. The Committee should be evaluating teams for relative strength. They won't always get it right but they'll come a lot closer than they will with these current political arrangements. I know, money talks. But, you don't have to listen to it, and sometimes when you do listen to it, you deliver a less than optimum product. So, they have a choice to make. My guess is that they'll follow the money. That's what they do.

The B1G and SEC will get multiple autobids because they are the two best conferences. All the SEC defeats listed were to B1G teams, not the other conferences. Unless someone is willing to argue that the SEC is third best conference, I havent heard that from anyone. I also think a 16 team playoff is the eventual endpoint, because the format gets rid of byes which have been heavily criticized and it also increases the number of first round on campus home games which have been lauded.

Expanding the number of teams in the playoffs is absolutely OK. Expanding the number of teams per conference is NOT. Conference Champions OK. At-large bids to deserving teams is OK. Making the playoffs conference vs. conference? I'm OUT. Hard pass. Look, if the SEC is so much better than every other conference, then they really do deserve every at-large bid. It wasn't true this year, but some year it might be true, and that's OK. If the ACC (or any other conference) produces 8 of the most deserving teams in college football, then they deserve to have 8 teams in the CFP. The CFP should not be stacking the deck for or against anyone in advance. PERIOD. Petitti should resign, as he is a disaster for the B1G. The B1G needs a spokesman that advocates for college football, not this clown.

NIL is not the same. Its a rea$on why Downs is at OSU! SEC schools not from Big12 gotta pay big or get left behind.

If i were the B1G i wouldn't help the SEC with anything because everything is working just fine for them.
All it would take is for Amazon to be “we would like some games” and boom
Or Apple
Just go to 16 teams and give Conference Champs an automatic bid, but seed the teams correctly & just play the damn games. Its not rocket science.
Calling it now, the spirit of SWC is back; Texas, A&M, TECH, Baylor, smu & TCU will spend BIG to win.

That will be the argument right there. Deserving vs 1 loss teams. You're post makes sense, yes, but it won't happen for SEC to get all at-large spots.
Bowl games are a joke and can not be used to validly judge a team or conference.
Says every SEC fanboy. THIS YEAR!
So let's "judge" them by their playoff results? Okay.
Tennessee sucked. And Georgia wasn't all that good either....
There is no argument. Not anymore. The top 12 should be in. End of discussion.
I agree but the current format doesn't put the top 12 teams in due to agreements.
