I got a 3" (Part # 404-69215) and I couldn't be happier with it. My only complaint was on if the screw holes had a significant bur in it. So after running a tap down it to clean it up, it was good to go. As I do with all my new R8 tool holders and anything else thats R8. I run a tap down them just to be 100% sure nothing from the factory is stuck down in the draw bar threads area or below them. I learned this the hard way a while back when "Some how" a small part of a broken off drill bit was found about 1/8" into the treads where the draw bar tightens the shank up. Shars has always given me Fantastic Customer Service. I bought a USED 5" Face Mill cutter with a R8 shank that was out of spec. It was extremely lose. (Probably the reason why it was so cheap off E-Bay. ) Or someone had modified it to fit there machine. But when I called Shars they said "No Problem" And said as soon as they got it, They'd send me a new one. And then said, Had I personally bought it from them, The would have sent me a replacement before I mailed back the our of spec used one. And was reminded thats the advantage of having a account with them. They know what I've bought directly from them.

I can attest. Yours is a bit different but I use the 90 degree version of the cutter in this video and get good results when I'm not using those cheap ZCC inserts. It does use the primary edge to be fair though which leaves a better finish than a recycle cutter. Also the feed rate math was off.

You should have a look at the Haas face mills. I have posted some details about them here (no affiliation): www.flickr.com/photos/davidpbest/albums/72157718283406017

I don't know if you have seen the test i did on some good quality face mills & a cheap $25 one from the east. What i will say is i did run much faster rpm than you have. Anyway i have subscribed to your channel to help. Great video content. Steve.

I have seen your videos. Running the face mill at higher speeds will work-harden stainless. At this point I have standardized on face mills from Haas. Have a look here: tinyurl.com/bdfwvv63 Excellent value IMO.

crazy.... I just bought a 2" shars face mill and so far am blown away by it performance. I bought it to replace a cheapo one I smashed up by being my usual idiot. the old one was mediocre at best but I was just starting out machining as a hobby and it was what I could afford (think I spent 75 for the face mill, the holder and a set of carbide inserts). I wonder if the quality has gone up or if I just got a lucky one... I did spend more this time (200 and it didn't come with any inserts this time).

It looks like its going backward. The second index mill does not.

Please do tell why the inserts didn't immediately shatter after entering the cut then

It could be the actual inserts not the holder

If you had watched to the end,, you would have seen the very same carbide inserts in a different tool doing the face machining to perfection. It was not the inserts. I sent the face mill back to Shars for a refund.
