Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Diagnosis, Causes, and Treatment

- Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) is a condition where hearing loss suddenly occurs usually in just one ear without any obvious triggering event. With sudden sensorineural hearing loss, it is hypothesized that the hearing nerve becomes infected, usually by a virus, which causes the nerve to become inflamed. With inflammation, the nerve swells. Unfortunately, because the hearing nerve goes through a tiny bone covered tunnel through the skull, the nerve becomes compressed leading to nerve dysfunction.
Symptoms include not just hearing loss, but also tinnitus as well as a full or clogged sensation of the ear. This condition is diagnosed by history and ruling out other causes of hearing loss such as earwax or ear fluid. A hearing test confirms a nerve hearing loss is present.
At this point, treatment requires a prolonged course of high dose oral steroids followed by a steroid injection into the middle ear if the hearing loss persists. Hyperbaric oxygen may also be recommended.
Treatment is most successful if started within a few weeks of hearing loss onset. Once a month or more has passed, medical interventions are unlikely to work. That said, even without treatment, 50% of patients recover some hearing. But those who undergo treatment have a much higher chance for recovery of about 80%.

Dr. I had severe sensorineural my RE, MY LE profound sensorineural.
I had SSHL after waking from a short Saturday afternoon nap ,, rushed to the ENT within 2 hours. However, even though supposedly an "ear doctor", just checked, did not prescribe me with ANYTHING, recommended I go visit a bigger hospital, and sent me home. I did that as soon as the hospital opened ,, but that was two days later. Despite a few months of steroids and hyperbaric oxygen treatment, I did not get any of my lost hearing back (-60dB loss/drop). That was 10 years ago, and to this day I regret not pushing the ENT to at least TRY something, or even at least treat is as emergency. It may have not made any difference ,,, but I will never know. Point: It's an Emergency. Make a fuss if your ENT Specialist is not connecting the dots or taking is seriously. Take it very, very seriously yourself ,,, or really regret it later.

I had the same thing happen. I’ve lost the hearing in one year also pretty much the same thing with going to the doctor and being misdiagnosed.
They are worthless. I told my primary care doctor in his office within 2 days about sudden balance issues and he did not even lookup. He scheduled a carotid scan for a few weeks later. I kept calling. I got to an ENT within 4 weeks and he did not do a thing. I finally put myself on steroids at week 6 and they helped. I saw 2 ENTs and they did nothing. Dr's in the US are not properly trained to deal with this.

I was diagnosed with this and told i have high levels of fluid in both my ears...but only the left has hearing loss. When doing my HBOT treatments i get relief with the pressure it unclogs my left ear and i can hear the tv inside the tank perfectly. SO....if i can hear inder those conditions....doesnt it mean i am not experiencing hearing loss? But instead hearing interference?

I lost hearing in my left ear one week ago. How often should I get Intratympanic steroid injections during this critical early stage? I'm not taking oral steroids. Thank you!
I recommend seeing see a health professional asap. If it is sudden sensorineural hearing loss, you should be on high dose oral steroids. If that doesnt help, then the intratympanic steroid injection
@@hannah99558 My ENT has me swallow until I taste it while he's injecting the steroid. Then he says to stop swallowing and lie on my side for 30 minutes and to not swallow again. Is this a correct method? Thank you!

I was listening song via earphone and sudden felt blast in my ear but (my huge mistake) i ignored it as there was no pain or else symptoms and then I got busy in my sis wedding preparations about 6/8 months later i felt a few degree hearing loss and went to dr. he said its a sensory neural hearing loss. Can anyone tell me if they faced same problem.?

I have same problem in start in January 2024 I have no idea iam outside breeze cold go to my ear n sudden start noise in my ear after long story after hearing test my hearing Is zero in my left ear we are no awearness. I am so feel anxiety no dr is help me
This explanation of SSHL only states auditory nerve inflammation. There are several other causes for SSHL. This video fails to mention any of them.
What are the other causes?
