They really made Rayman a walking analogy for using mascots to hide foul play. Eden is shown to be oppressing people who stand against them, which especially include hybrids most working in conditions that are comparable to slaves. Rayman thought the whole time he was providing hope to everyone in Eden including his hybrid brethren so to learn the horrors that his face was being used to cover up, along with his outburst against Red’s blatant specism causing him to be replaced with another Rayman sent him into the extremes. If I had to give a real world comparison, it’d be like if Mickey was a real person and learned all the fucked up stuff Disney does.
Right?! That moment you find out that he's actually believes the propaganda with his whole heart actually made it so much worse. We all expected Rayman to be just another hollowed out celeb selling himself for money, but how much more tragic is it to find out that he had no clue how bad it was? Or that they were using his face to sell those lies? The rage he felt at the way other hybrids were being treated under his name is understandable; his transformation should be a joke (ha ha take kid character and make him edgy) but instead it comes from a really believe able place of emotion.
This being done with a Ubisoft property, let alone so many of them all at once, is either a case of tone-deafness on the part of the company, or one of the boldest fucking rebellions on the part of the writers and animators i've seen in a while, based on how much creative freedom the writers were given. Ubisoft and multiple other companies had a HUGE fucking upset a few years ago due to the numerous sexual abuse allegations and abusive figureheads uncovered at Ubisoft, and their primary way of covering it up was releasing information on long-awaited titles to try and beat the bad press to the punch. The fact that Ramon realizes that he'd let his entire identity be dictated by his employers holding his life over their heads and deciding to reinvent himself from whole cloth into what he needs to be for the world to make sense anymore feels like a very loud and proud statement of "These ideas and everything good they represent exist in spite of the company that fund them."

To be fair. He probably started doing cocaine after he suspeyhe was going to be replaced. People in an existential crisis do start to try drugs and activities they previously didn't participate in. But I'm willing to bet he was bringing in Hybrid Hookers long before any of that.
I mean, the rest of the show isn't as good as the Rayman bits, aside from Bullfrog. The story is rushed, with six episodes basically speed running through two seasons. The story of the first three episodes should've been the whole season, with shit getting expanded upon, but instead we got a rush revenge plot, multiple things being done offscreen (The Rabbid kaiju, the first part of Bullfrog versus Alex's minions, Dolph versus the Niji 6, Rayman killing the Templars, etc.), plot points being dropped (Like the interdimensional gun just disappearing, who Alex was working for, etc.), and several of the deaths just not landing. Jade and Pey'j's deaths just weren't sad, and seemed to be heavily relying on people knowing who they were beforehand. If you didn't know they were from Beyond Good and Evil, then they're just the hot reporter chick and her somewhat creepy pigman uncle who had the hots for her. And you only get to know Jade for an episode, and Pey'j for two episodes before they're killed in what felt like a metaphor for Ubisoft axing the Beyond Good and Evil franchise. Alex, as a villain, fails when his motivations just don't make sense. His entire plan was peace through hate. If his story was done over the whole season, his plan could've been expanded upon to at least make sense, since they were going for a sympathetic route for his motivations. And the twist at the end with Sarah Fisher was just too obvious to be a good twist. She spent the whole series as a villain, so her revealing herself to actually be a villain was just like, "Yeah, we know".
Everyone has pointed out that Rayman's arc mirrors how Ubisoft has treated him, but nobody has pointed out how his status as an limbless alien surrounded by limbed folk mirrors how he's the only mascot platformer who has no limbs at all
@@heheheiamasupahstarslam5397 that's not the same, they're on about him being the only mascot platformer without limbs, not only character from platformer games without limbs. one could definitely argue kirby has limbs too, if you wanted to try suggest kirby, given the fact he has little nubs and feet
It was a good touch having Rayman make use of his ability to literally throw his hands like that. Honestly this is pretty well done. "Raymone" was tastelessly edgy but somehow didn't pull me out of the story. The message of being treated like a replaceable product and not a person is a very real thing. His reactions to what happened to him and how he wants to stand up for what's right make sense.
Also, not many mention this, but while he massacre the board members, he just knock down the (relatively innocent) guard. He may angry, but likely still avoid needless killing
It’s also especially interesting if you know the etymology of the name. From the sound of the pronunciation, it’s a clear play on “Ramon” which is actually a Spanish version of “Raymond”. Both names, as a result, actually translate to “Defender”, “Counselor”, or “He who defends through council” specifically in some variations of translation. So considering his whole arc was him trying to be an anchor to act as a beacon of hope for all hybrids, even the name manages to still keep in character with his motives and beliefs
As a person who’s never played a *single* Rayman game… Rayman was my favorite character in this show. The shift from being so innocent to being willing to massacre an entire room just makes perfect sense with the context, and it honestly makes me feel bad to see him go down this path, even if it’s what he should’ve done years ago.
Welcome to the club teehee :3 I recommend you start with either origins & or redemption. They can be on PC & the latter is a fan game so no ties to Ubisoft.
Can’t blame him. Bros been through a lot as it is. From being discriminated for being an alien refugee, and working his hardest to get a diploma only to get nothing in return. Then having your own image used to give the people false hope of the darker side that’s going down. That and the Rabbids…. Bros suffered a LOT when it comes to those brain dead reject bunnies
If Rayman hadnt stopped fighting for a long time he would have put up a MUCH better fight against Red. Rayman canonically beat a gang of space pirates that enslaved over 100,000 lives, shook an entire constellation, can punch people so hard that they explode, but after he left his dimension he seemed to have gotten sloppy, forgetting that he is indeed supposed to be a hero with great power. Poor rayman :c
My headcanon is that this story takes place in Rayman's past, before he became a hero. Captian Laserhawk is set in 1992, so before Rayman 1 by 3 years exactly. You can see that by his inability to fight properly and the fact that he is rather young here. He also doesn't know how to fly and after Rayman 3 and the Raving Rabbids game, Ubisoft tried to tell an origin story of Raymans with Rayman 4 being initially conceived as a reboot for the franchise and his origin story. Probably the series would then end with him leaving Earth and going back to Dimension X and life amongst his own in peace until Origins, Legends and Rayman 1 begins!!!
@basilofgoodwishes4138 @basilofgoodwishes4138 That would make sense if Rayman Origins didn't Thanos snap everything out of existence and made him a hero from the moment he had been born after Betilla crafted him out of lums. We also see that Young Rayman in this show literally goes to college and graduates, suggesting this guy is older than any other Rayman we've seen. I would have agreed with you if I didn't see Betilla literally craft him out of lums in a cutscene. But I think that could also be the case because he DOES look young, but raymans history has ALWAYS been reconned literally all the time and its all over the place 😭
@@StrawberryMilkshaykez Origins has hardly any continuity that should be taken as gospel, really, given that they depict Lums with army and faces, when only André and his Black Lums had these features unique to them. Also Rayman could have been born and then left his homeland or the better explaination and this Rayman came here in that alternative reality of Earth as baby and grew up here, without knowing anything about the Glade of Dreams.
@@basilofgoodwishes4138 Rayman orgins is canon, but the rayman leaving his homeland does make sense considering rayman gets his powers to fight in the middle of origins and since he hasnt gone through orgins yet he has an inability to fight

This is one of the many reasons I love this show. Imagine Nintendo displaying Mario as a depressed 30-some nobody who lives with his brother doing mushrooms in his spare time. But in an ironic low effort meta self-aware way.
I'd imagine Wario as the head of the greatest and richest drug cartel in the country, calls the merchendise "garlic" as a euphemism, smokes cigars, swears like a sailor, has Waluigi as his trigger happy right-hand man, and surrounds himself with hookers and sugar babies.
Ironically enough, this is pretty in character of Rayman considering he might look like a friendly creature, but he can get pretty matured realistically like this too. It's kind of proven within the advertisements of Rayman 3.
also with him being mad at racism and injustices it's very much in canon personality here too, he's been fighting against slavery and oppression of kingdoms since the first game, they just made him darker this time lol
The fact he can detach his hands legs and maybe his head? from his body and move them around independently across a decent distance actually opens up some interesting and horrifying possibilities for an anti-hero...
Rayman has no legs, arms, or neck, the hood and pants are making it loom like that. He has detached himself many times in the games, far ranges too. Like he can send his fist and foot out to great lengths.
You have to admire the balls of Ubisoft. Could you ever imagine the likes of Nintendo having Mario portrayed like this? I mean sure, Rayman isn't their top IP right now, but still, having a child friendly mascot take a turn like this... Feels more like something you'd see in a web parody, not an official series! Then again, they are a French company. Experimental stuff is hardly something the Europeans are adverse to. EDIT: Dang, that's a lot of likes! Thank you!

It's fucking insane that "Rayman starts gets shunned and starts doing drugs" is an a scenario in that exists and it's even more insane that said scenario STILL seems in character for him given his history
I wasn't so sure at first about how they took Rayman's character when I started the series. It felt like every other "childhood character you love is now adult and obscene" trope we see in modern media. But as the series went on, I actually really began to love the writing of him, and the path they were going for. Being a "Hybrid", Rayman is considered part of a largely discriminated minority, and was struggling before being made into Eden's mascot. It's shown that he had been greatly dehumanized in the process, becoming a shill for all of Eden's lies and propaganda. But some of his humanity persists, most notably shown when he protests against Niji Red's active racism towards "interdimensional alien scum," and when he privately tries to justify his actions to the Board of Directors. The "racial minority used by a company and turned into a corporate super-star" story is a sadly realistic one, and is thankfully being touched on more in the present with shows like this and The Boys (take A-Train in season 3, for example). Did I ever think Rayman was going to be one of these examples? Never in my life. Am I loving it every second of the way? Yes. Releasing Rayman's character by letting him get back at his abusers and off the entire Board of Directors was not only insanely satisfying to see, but it also greatly builds up interest for what comes next. Admittedly, giving Rayman a trenchcoat, twin tommy guns, slicking back his hair and changing his name to "Ramon" was a little silly, but that's what I love about this show. It finds a good balance between story-driven, violent action and goofy humor, something other adult-oriented shows fail to do. I can't wait for the next season!
@@jackislegitterrified3689 That's _also_ part of the point. When racism is involved, racists don't exactly care where you came from, only where you LOOK LIKE you came from. In terms of the show, people don't see "Pigman, cowgirl, weird limbless alien" They see "Three hybrid freaks" Even with whatever they have going on for his doppelganger, they never bothered to put any behind-the-scenes way of telling Rayman apart from his replacement, so he's able to schmooze on past the guards to talk with Bullfrog by just falling back into his stage persona, which he'd been refining for YEARS.
I agree with the general sentiment, and I agree that the "minority getting exploited for good faith credit" is sadly too common a story, but I gotta say: Don't expect anything good from The Boys. The original story had supers of every race and creed, showing off that anyone can be evil, that they made A-train the "poor black man exploited for the corporation to show off as non-racist" is ironically an example of this, they already had a heroic black man in Mother's Milk instead of giving the minority villain a "but he's not evil though" arc.

It feels like he came straight out of nowhere, everyone know him, but no one expected to see him in a show and even less in a adult show. You see him in this and you'll probably say: Wait a minute... RAYMAN? Sniffing cocaine, drink, swearing, killing, etc?
If we ever do get another Rayman game with Rayman starting to make a comeback in the mainstream thanks to Mario & Rabbids plus this new Netflix Anime. I wonder if they’d keep him the same or they’d change him to be like Conker’s Bad Fur Day?
I'd rather they avoid Conkering him out. The settings in Rayman's franchise and Captain Laserhawk are drastically different, so it wouldn't feel right to change up the main Rayman to make him like Captain Laserhawk's Rayman (even though Rayman was a highlight in the show like he usually is [especially that floating hand takedown scene starting at 4:23]). Crossovers allow for anything to happen, but the original series shouldn't be influenced by this crossover due to drastically different tones between the two properties. Part of the Rayman charm is the fantastical elements, great art design, solid momentum mechanics, solid sense of humor (even being able to slip in some adult humor in an E-rated game like Rayman 3), and the contrast between the whimsical inhabitants of Rayman's World and the villains of each game. Making Rayman himself lose his whimsical nature by making him have a Conker's Bad Fur Day wouldn't be the best when taking the rest of the series into context. Razorbeard enslaving most of the population in Rayman 2: The Great Escape is dark, but Rayman was viewed as being the good natured ray of hope within the darkness of that game (like he is in the other titles). Making Rayman become the dark (like Mr. Dark, Razorbeard, André, etc.) would be out of character for him in his own franchise. It worked for Conker as CBFD was only his 2nd starring game and 3rd overall appearance in a game. He originally appeared in Diddy Kong Racing (1997), but he also starred in Conker's Pocket Tales (1999) before having CBFD in 2001. As such, Conker only existed for less than half a decade before having an M rated title. Rayman, on the other hand, has had a bunch of games since 1995 (even though he's on break besides the Sparks of Hope DLC and various re-releases), so he's already established to a certain degree. Changing the tone of his series to make the next new game after a decade of no new games be a CBFD would be a BIT too drastic.
Love the way that they betrayed Rayman He definitely showed his anger and rage. Pent up all those years of being sidelined and forgotten long live rayman
Honestly, of all of this, my favourite part is that little Judo Chop he does. It's a nice call back to the fact that Rayman can actually "dislocate" his hands, it was even the basis of an entire game plotline.

It's a VERY hit and miss show. Good setpieces, pretty messy plot. Rayman being brought back as a meta commentary of how he was done dirty is pretty much the highlight.
Even though there already are a lot of iconic characters that become parodied in adult shows, it's amazing that Ubisoft added their own mascot that started their success onto a show and with an incredibly dark twist to him, especially since they haven't made a new Rayman game in 10 years (although I find that very frustrating). You'll never see Nintendo do that with Mario or Sega with Sonic. I'm so excited to see Rayman again even if it's in a show and not a game.
I am continuously amazed by the range David Menkin has. For context, this is the same voice actor as Barnabas from Final Fantasy, Malos from Xenoblade, and Luke Skywalker from the most recent LEGO Star Wars. The guy's a legend.

It's interesting how Rayman is the only thing people seem to talk about in this series. I think that shows just how beloved this character truly is.
pretty wise
to be fair the rest of the series is pretty mid
Aside from the Bullfrog, he's amazing
@@calamariknight481that's what I'm talking about
I mean, the rest of the show isn't as good as the Rayman bits, aside from Bullfrog.
@@kosaba11 yeah, that too. There were a lot of good concepts but 6 episodes was way too short

Pretty sure "Raymone" is a reference to Shadow the hedgehog, it's purposefully edgy as a joke.
@@axios4702they kind of missed the point of his name then
I can't help but feel like his line of "There you are; that's a very naughty hand" is a reference to his show. But that's just a headcanon

It's fucking insane that "Rayman starts gets shunned and starts doing drugs" is an a scenario in that exists and it's even more insane that said scenario STILL seems in character for him given his history
Its canon btw
He's not a hybrid, he's literally an alien from another dimension
@@jackislegitterrified3689 That's _also_ part of the point.
When racism is involved, racists don't exactly care where you came from, only where you LOOK LIKE you came from.
In terms of the show, people don't see "Pigman, cowgirl, weird limbless alien" They see "Three hybrid freaks"
Even with whatever they have going on for his doppelganger, they never bothered to put any behind-the-scenes way of telling Rayman apart from his replacement, so he's able to schmooze on past the guards to talk with Bullfrog by just falling back into his stage persona, which he'd been refining for YEARS.
I agree with the general sentiment, and I agree that the "minority getting exploited for good faith credit" is sadly too common a story, but I gotta say:
Don't expect anything good from The Boys.
Especially since it shows a perfect way of reintroducing the character un a new light in a adult show and actually making it work

@@blackheartzerotheundergrou3225given how badshit insane this show is I’m willing to bet it’s a rabbid simply because it’s more hilarious and ironic than being more accurate to his lore
So my interpretation of Eden just being modern day Ubisoft is true, cool
Do people just *forget* how lewd the comedy of the series has gotten at times? Like, I don’t think this is *that* far out of character at all, this is still the same dude for certain, just pushed to an extreme point.
I didn’t, & I loved every moment of his Cyberpunk depiction, especially considering how one of the characters I ended up simping for is fucking spamton.
So I was kind of the target demographic lol.
Grown up with Rayman ☑️ Edgy as fuck ☑️ Likes the trope/plot-beat of star falling from their ivory & finding redemption ☑️ autistic ☑️ over-analyzes shit to the core & can see the writing on the wall so to speak ☑️☑️☑️☑️☑️☑️☑️☑️.
Sure, but imagine if he were like this in his original game on the PS1.
@@LuznoLindo yeah, imagine if he was one of those edgy kids who thought they were so mature just cuz they cussed like a sailor & played GTA even though it’s not for their age group.
2:23 Who in their right mind decided that Rayman would be eating Sushi off of a naked bull girl?
I dont know who had the idea, but they're a genius.
@@pura_vix2612 Agreed, but I don't eat food off of someone, I'd rather massage her
uh... bulls are male cows
I think it's supposed to be a "Nyotaimori" often referred as Body Sushi, a Japanese practice of serving sashimi or sushi from the naked body of a woman (Nantaimori) is the male equivalent
It is said to have its origins in the samurai period. It was a sub cultured of the Geishas (A.K.A 'geiko' High ranking entertainers). The event would take place in a Geisha house as a celebration after a victorious battle.

I wouldn't mind an actual adult Rayman show tbh.
It exists its called tank girl
I would love to see what happend to the other characters like Globox, Razor beard, and Murfy
He sounds exactly like how I always imagined he would sound!
Love how nobody is talking about anything other than rayman with this show.
ubisoft: so, people still remember him huh...
Bullfrog too
It just goes to show how many people still love rayman😭
And bullfrog, the greatest assassin.
It feels like he came straight out of nowhere, everyone know him, but no one expected to see him in a show and even less in a adult show.
You see him in this and you'll probably say: Wait a minute... RAYMAN? Sniffing cocaine, drink, swearing, killing, etc?
You gotta understand, this works so well on Rayman of all characters because its not so far off from what they did to his game series
If we ever do get another Rayman game with Rayman starting to make a comeback in the mainstream thanks to Mario & Rabbids plus this new Netflix Anime. I wonder if they’d keep him the same or they’d change him to be like Conker’s Bad Fur Day?
nah, this is it's own thing
but if anything they would probably keep him a little bit jaded as he was in sparks of hope
I feel like keeping most of it the same but giving him more of the jaded and unhinged personality we see in the show and sparks of hope.
Maybe a bit of both? Have a morality system that make the game shift between happy-go-lucky platforming or gameplay like shadow the hedgehog
So Rayman will have a gun?
Love the way that they betrayed Rayman He definitely showed his anger and rage. Pent up all those years of being sidelined and forgotten long live rayman
Honestly, of all of this, my favourite part is that little Judo Chop he does. It's a nice call back to the fact that Rayman can actually "dislocate" his hands, it was even the basis of an entire game plotline.
That's pretty cool. I thought it was just for aesthetics.
I assume you refer to Rayman 3?
@@CyberLink70 I don't remember the number myself, I just know it wasn't 2, but probably 3, yeah.
Not to be pedantic but it was the intro level/intro sequence of Rayman 3, not the basis of the games plot line, but yeah, it’s cool the show recognized that
2:23 never in all
My days would I have expected to see ray man eating sushi off a cow anthros rear, Ubisoft put in work on that moo too man, love to see it…

😂
Who would’ve guessed that a character who snorts cocaine and kills people would be fighting alongside Mario
I don't know why but Rayman going postal feels 100% in character.
I’m honestly surprised to see rayman being portrayed this way, I’m definitely gonna have to check this show out, I’ll even watch it solely for him
Yo tambien
It reminds me of conker
It's a VERY hit and miss show. Good setpieces, pretty messy plot. Rayman being brought back as a meta commentary of how he was done dirty is pretty much the highlight.
@@mariano1196 yeah I watched the show just recently and it’s very hit and miss I mean rayman was literally the only part of the show I cared about
4:52 bro sounded like baki
I love the way they animated him. So good.
2:18 I know it’s Rayman who broke the screen, but I wonder if the glitching is supposed to hint at the literally robotic nature of his replacement.
They practically turned Rayman into Bojack Horseman except even more depressed and unhinged.
What makes this funnier is that the voice of Rayman is actually Malos (David Menkin).
What ten years without a game does to a mf

And of course bullfrog and rayman
Bullfrog has to be one of my favorite chars in any medium in the last 10 years.
He's hands down the best AC based Assassin ever.
Bullfrog best character
When you realize Netflix gave more love to Rayman than Ubisoft ever did over the past several years (aside from his return in Mario + Rabbids 2).
He was also Scoop from Bob the Builder.
So, are we not going to question why he was eating off a cow-lady or who the cow lady was? 2:21-2:27
“Wish I was that cow”
