I seriously wanna try gold leaf stuff. I think this sort of hobbyist production is great right now if people are going a bit mad from lockdowns etc. Look forward to more videos!
Hi mate. As i can see the best reflection is with golden leaves. Can you tell me please what supplier you are using cos its so many fake gold leaves on market.
Hi, I'm based in the UK and I've always bought my leaf from Wrights Of Lymn. Here's a link to their Gold Leaf range: www.stonehouses.co.uk/gold-imitation-leaf/gold-leaf/gold-leaf-loose-59.html
Again a tremendous amount of work for a case study. Hopefully they are jobs for clients hehe. BTW I love the lined effect in the centre of the letters. Thumbs up.
Thanks very much! Unfortunately none of them are commissions. I started the channel as a lockdown hobby but it's way more popular than I anticipated so I'm going to keep going with it till I run out of ideas :)
@John Clayton I've never heard of Molotow but I'll definitely give it a look. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely revisit the mirror paint video when the weather is better. If the results are different I'll make a part 2 vid and add the Molotow :)
@@happygilder Hello. I will also introduce some thesis. The guys who work with the models use Molotov Chrome to mirror their surfaces. They just take a marker, press the paint out of it into the airbrush and paint. And by the way, it is with the help of Molotov Chrome that you can achieve the perfect chrome finish. I've reviewed dozens of comparison videos.
@@happygilder It would be interesting to see comparisons between the two. Actually with imitation and real more generally. I think most imitation nowadays is made of aluminium, so it shouldn't tarnish like the copper-based ones.
The leaf is water gilded and then burnished to achieve the mirror finish. I have a few videos on the process. Here a link to one of them: ua-cam.com/video/ilMyWSsZeXc/v-deo.html Sorry for the audio quality
Love your videos! Totally off topic, But I saw you had a Door County shirt on one time, and now a Packers hat. I'm from Wisconsin, myself! What's your connection here or was it just a nice vacation?
Thanks very much! I used to work in Green Bay and consider myself a full blown Wisconsinite! I love it there and the people are the best in the world. Go Pack!! :-D
@@happygilder Cool! I'm Texan but presently misplaced in east Tennessee; back in my bull riding days I made it up to Wisconsin for some rodeos and Loved it up there. Beautiful state and throughly enthusiastic genuine folks I'd go back given any chance. I was up in Spooner and Madison, those folks loved rodeo maybe even more so than Texans. (sshhh, don't tell anyone...)
I tried XYLAZE, a product I buy here in Spain and to my horror the varnished outline re-worked the paint and I ended up with a silver mess. Fortunately it wasnt a job.
I just watched this video and came on to make exactly this comment. Totally destroyed the One Shot I had used for a gilded piece and absolutely ruined it.
Really useful video and very informative.. as ever :-) How about the cheap so called 'genuine gold leaf' offers on Ebay as a comparison? I can't believe they would be particularly good but have you dabbled with them? Cheers!
Thanks! I’ve only ever bought gold from Wrights of Lymn so I don’t know if the ebay ones are legit, or any good. I really want to do a comprehensive gold leaf test but it would cost me too much to get all the variations :)
@@happygilder I was going to post link but it fills the page.. lol! I am not suggesting you try it but it is way less cost than the spray cans you purchased ie 100 sheets 24ct for less than £5. Yes there will be an enormous catch I am sure. But maybe it might work in some way like the gold flakes you used in another vid?
I heated the shed after the first attempt didn't stick, so it wasn't freezing when I did the tests but it wasn't very warm. Would probably be better on a summers day

How about if you were doing decorative strips would you suggest gold mirror spray paint Or decorative gold tape 🤔
Can I find gold mirror color spray for the car ?

I wonder how much surface prep changes might affect the paints? And warmer temperatures...?
It probably was a bit too cold. I’ll do a sequel in the summer :D

Is it real white gold leaf? Would imitation have the same effect?
It is real 12 carat white gold. I’m not sure if imitation leaf has a mirror finish

How did you get the gold leaf smooth without texture?

What did you use to apply / adhere the gold leaf?
It's a mixture of distilled water & leaf gelatine. Here's a link to a gilding tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/ilMyWSsZeXc/v-deo.html
Which Gold Leaf is that?
It’s 12 carat white gold leaf. I bought it from Wrights of Lymm

Yes the Krylon is brutal on Oneshot Enamel. I should have done an example on the video

Wish I had found this video before I already did my project 🤦

Spray paint doesn't work well in freezing cold this test isn't 100%
