  • After months of requests, I finally bought Culture Hustle's Liquid Mirror Paint in a Bottle. It claims to be the only paint in the world that will turn anything into a mirror... we'll be the judge of that...especially for how much it costs!

    Considering how runny the paint is I'm fairly sure that apple was dipped in a vat of the paint and allowed to dry hanging by the stem. That's why it's so smooth.

      Forgot to say, glossy black. Very important

  • @srg5654
    @srg5654 3 роки тому +820

    As a model maker who works with stuff like this, you'll get way better results if you prime with a black base. Same for color shift. Also, brush technique and application technique is really important, rather than just kinda slapping it on like normal paint. The apple photo is almost definitely primed and sprayed on instead of brushed on. You kinda want to stipple and smooth it out more than drag it around. This paint can get some crazy results but people almost never apply it correctly, so a lot of room for user error.

    • @arieltales8952
      @arieltales8952 3 роки тому +10

      Which black base do you recommend?

    • @zapheil
      @zapheil 3 роки тому +33

      Ariel Tales I can only speak from my experience painting miniature figures for D&D, but I like to use gesso to prime things. There are spray-on primers, but I like gesso because you can brush it on, which makes it easier to touch up little areas you missed, and it dries super thin (but strong) which means fine details are preserved. You can buy gesso in white or black, but you can also mix them to make a gray.

    • @arieltales8952

      i agree, i was hoping she would paint the stuff black before putting the liquid mirror paint on and i was so disappointed that she kept using it like it is regular paint. reflective/metallic paints appear more shiny with a black base.

    8:40, the fact that is smells like Super Elastic Bubble Plastic
    is concerning. i think they stopped selling the toy because the bubbles contained chemicals like polyvinyl acetate (found in glue) and ethyl acetate (found in nail polish remover), and if you inhaled it, you got a mouthful of toxic fume

      I've had a pen version of this, I agree, it's around the same mirroriness as this. I have also learned that you need to put it on a *really* smooth surface to get the mirror effect. I'm sure it does have the potential to get a 100% mirror finish but you need pretty perfect circumstances to get that.

    7:50 Fun fact this effect is called Fresnel! Materials generally become more reflective as you look from a 90º angle. It's especially noticeable on mugs, clean wood flooring and the surface of the sea.

    I'd love to see how this compares to Liquid Leaf (a liquid paint designed to replicate the look of metal leaf). I also wonder whether one of the tricks used for Liquid Leaf would help with some of the brush stroke issues- literally just blow gently on the paint. It helps align the metal particles and reduce the size of the brushstrokes.
    It would also be interesting to see what the paint looks like on the back of glass. After all, that's how mirrors are silvered!

  • @StaceFace
    @StaceFace 3 роки тому +19

    the effect it created when you painted it on the mirror was insane. you should make an art piece where you paint a mirror like that with it. like some simple shapes or patterns, would be so cool!

  • @brianegendorf2023
    @brianegendorf2023 8 місяців тому

    I feel like you can probably thin it with a little a few drops of water to to get it to spread better and decrease the plastic over the mirror effect.. Also, maybe use a blower of some kind to spread the paint to its ultimate thin-ness.. It seems to me like thinner is better for this kind of paint. But it also has to be perfectly evenly distributed.

    Thanks for the demo....I'm pretty sure the apple on the manufacturer's website (5:33) has been given a cut and buff. Without it a paint's texture can be likened to orange peel regardless of whether it was brushed, poured, or sprayed. Cut, buff, and orange peel are explained in automotive paint videos that show the before and after differences of a paint’s reflective quality. For Liquid Mirror one could probably get away with wet sanding with 1000-2500 grit sandpapers (available for a few dollars at Harbor Freight Tools), similar to the process of restoring cloudy headlight plastic on a car back to clear.
