I had a friend with a ‘74 Duster, it had a 340 done with only Mopar hi-perf parts… it was pushing over 500 hp and that thing would plant you back in your seat my friend… I loved that car.
Why would you say that ? Dodges were ok back in the day . But I've had a couple , they definitely wouldn't cut it today . My 68 318 dodge was slow , hard on gas , with poor braking and steering . My Aspen was a piece of crap .
@@jackfishcampbell6745..You owned high mileage beat up cars,,The 68 318 probably was a 273! A stock 68 318 2bbl would run upper 15's in the 1/4 sure not a 12 second 1/4 mile car like a 440 was but my buddy got his 73 Challenger 318 to run 13.33 in the 1/4 back in the early 90's with minor work, not even a rebuild we were very young and short on cash! 4bbl LD 340 intake, mild ported 360 heads and a purple cam! car ran 3.55 gears stock trans. Few of my family had Aspen/Volare and they were reliable bought them new they had over 200,000 miles on them on average with no huge issues..Remember after 99,999 they rolled to 00,000 the opposite color 6th digit if they had them were only 1/10th of a mile readout..Those cars never shown over 99,999 miles! You most likely had a 200,000 mile car! Dont thinks so? My Uncle has a 320,000 mile 1970 Cuda 440 6bbl he bought new,the 260,000 miles were done from 70-82 and since 77 it wasnt a daily driver! He put 60,000 since 1985 after he repainted the car and brought it up to like new condition, also redid the engine at that time...2 weeks after he bought it he ran high 11's in the 1/4 mile with a stock 440 6bbl,he fine tuned the carbs, added headers and slicks that were equal to a new minivans 225 tire, they were 8 inches wide! and still spun!
You could make good power with a 318 . I'm from that time , but stock they were everyday run of the mill engines . They were peppy in a Duster , not so much in a full sized car . I wasn't putting the 318 down , they were great engines . But back in the 70s , the time when I was young , they were respected but considered a regular driver unless fixed up . They competed with the Ford 302 Windsor and chevy 283/307 etc . I also had a couple of 302 Windsor's and one Chevy 307 . They were lazy smooth commuter motors . But could be performer's with mods .
@JamesSilcox-if9ke I wouldn't say a little work.. cam, heads, compression. Intake. It's a great little novelty car but you are way farther along with a 340 or 360.
@@burningblue1254 I worked on diesel engines forever it felt like. Tearing into a simple gas V-8 was as easy for me as eating ice cream, especially with a machine shop next door.

340’s were the best
Sounds like a healthy 340…😊
Beautiful car! Great sound.
The glorious sound of a Chrysler V8!
Tengo un Valiant super bee 71 ...318 ahí lo vamos conservando...👍😊🇲🇽
Oh yeah! Hang onto that car -
Beautiful vehicle
Better than any import!

What mufflers??
Had a 1968 Chevrolet Caprice with a 396 350 horse would blow the doors off this duster
That’s it ! Granny 🐌
Nice. And I'm not a small block guy. 🙃
Sick asf
Good ole reliable 318, but unfortunately low compression low horse power motor. Fun for cruising though. I had a few back in the day.
Just like any engine a 318 can come alive with just a little work.
Bob Glidden won championships in Pro Stock with a 318 based motor.

@@radsdad1he did indeed. The 318 has a very stout bottom end but for the money a 340 or a 360 is already halfway there.
