About this series - Geometry Node Introduction Series ( 3.0 Fields and Beyond )
Welcome to another short tutorial series about hot topic of the blender community, which is also the latest and anticipated feature - Geometry Nodes. In this chapter 6, we are going to discuss... a few more things about math, use the same nodes that we made animation with in last chapter, but this time use math, vectors, floats and textures to make basis displacement on a mesh. Basically , we will learn basics of manipulating geometry with help of nodes, and shape up some nice looking landscapes.
Nodes are powerful, every major 3D program either already have a strong node based procedural workflow, or is adapting to it. Blender's Everything Node projects first installment is Geometry Nodes. Which is still at a very early stage of development, but can make life easier even with limited number of nodes we have a this moment.
It's fun, It changes the way we used to make environments, procedural effects, scatter things around. And not just that, with upcoming modifiers and many more nodes being added to it, its going to get even more powerful. So while the development of Geometry Nodes will go on for quite some time, its better we do some catching up, and start adapting to the new workflow.
This first part of Geometry Nodes series is for absolute beginners, Like, literally basics and no tricks or advance setups, This is for those who are starting with nodes and geometry nodes workflow for the first times. Well, Lets agree, it looks darn scary when you look at those big node maps, but once you understand it, you will never go back to old methods. We will start with creating absolute basic things , without touching the spreadsheet or attributes first. Main goal here is to get comfortable with nodes, know its meaning and uses, why it is better than old methods. Understanding the node based interface, adding nodes, connecting nodes, short keys, organizing nodes, making simple node groups etc. will be our first priority, from there on we will work towards using simple math in nodes, applying materials, using node groups, simple point instancing, Wiring parameters ,creating your first node based animation which you can apply to any other object with single click and it will give you exact same results. By the end of this short series you should have this animation with you, or even better example. And then we can get into a bit of rendering and lighting of this intro sequence.
Enough talk now, So lets get started and get our hands on Geometry Nodes already, and I will try to make it as easy as it could get, because honestly , I hate spreadsheets and math's as well, But there are always ways to find methods of learning. Lets figure it out together.
I will be adding new chapters in this playlist, to save this playlist for future updates

Could you please do a deep dive into blender fractals with geometry nodes and do an extensive video on node set ups for intricate patterns/movement? The extrude nodes already give interesting effects but I would love to learn about other nodes and how to use them to create more complex fractals :)
Don't forget for a looping animation you can do frame/frames -> map range 0-tau -> sine and cosine map range -1,1 to 0,1.
Can also be used in 2D texture space (i.e. UV space) to drive Z and W parameters of 4D generators.
Woah whattt
Ima try
Can you expand upon this? Where do you code that into? The scale of the last node? Any links?
@@CrossMindStudioyou can type into value boxes. If you can put a number in the box then you can also put letters
#cos(frame*tau/250) where 250 is total frame
everytime i think the tutorial doesnt exist, you make it! thanks.
Happy to help!
This is just too good man
you have one of the highest quality blender tutorials out there, thank you for that !
TY i learn a lot while making these tutorials.
can someone help i get lost when he starts adding the blue lights how did he get there its like the video skips
man you are a genius to be honest
Thanks ,But its pretty simple once you know it.
Thank you very much, you explained everything very well and clearly
Now the big question is.... How do I get to loop stuff like this?!
i'm not too good at nodes in blender, but the answer has to be either plugging a vector map node somewhere and change x, y, or z rotation from 0 to 360... or plug a math node somewhere that does mod function
You can use nodes to offset the start to the middle of the animation, & then use base starting point to blend into each other.
I know that's very vague but there are some looping noise material tutorials out there that do exactly this.
I think it was a ducky3d tutorial but not 100% sure.
Amazing man!! 10x a lot I got to reach this simplifying channel
Another Indian guy to the rescue with the best turorials❤❤
Thank you xx
Hello! I tried your fractal-node again. Just one question: I dont get this look like 6:35 many black thread-strucured areas and a bit glowing areas. I tried your setting 1:1. Is this the wired-View? My cube is a nice peace of glas with low structure.. How big is the light inside, how much intensity? Yours looking much cooler!
Try one more duplicate of node group that will thicken the mesh. However its going to get heavy a bit. Once you have dense mesh then refractions will darken overlapping areas light not passing through.
@@CrossMindStudio Hi! unfortunately its not working. My pc crashes and nothing really changend before.. I dont find the solution.. But thanks!
Your channel deserve way more attention.. I'm learning so many stuff from your tutorials 🥺
I believe that one day.. your channel will be one of the best blender channel💕
exactly the dude knows things that are not yet in blender xD he can teach devs abt the new features they will add hahahah
He was at 35k subs a year ago
but i still agree lol
It already is :)
Damn, looks gorgeous man.
Thanks
Excellent, i love a fractal.
i followed all the step, but evertime I scale up, it grows to weird shape and scale up the object. What am I missing? Also, the render and lighting, its not working the same way as you showing
This is an incredibly helpful video! Thanks a lot
This is amazing
Im following your tutorials, Thank you for sharing🌟✨
Is there no way to loop the movement of the pattern
?
how do you add that many lights that quick at 6:33?
Thanks...i am really enjoying the series...i hope it continues😊
Of course, working on more stuff.
@@CrossMindStudio you mean junk
THAT'S GREAT !
awesome, do not forget to increase light path samples for transparency/transmission for better glass in cycles.
You can also experiment with caustics
good suggestion , however for this case i used default value 12.
Yea my Laptop gonna blow up
my project did not become the same, brother!
Thank you so much!
I 'm in love with this project. 😍 Since I'm relatively new to blender I was wondering if you would be willing to explain how to create an animation/loop from this?
in case you never found out, you can set the frames on your project to whatever you want and use the geometry node "scene time" and link it to a parameter, I reckon you'd want to use scale so the faces morph over time. The scale value should then go up as the frames go up you can then render this as an animation, keep in mind that this could be a massive load for your computer. I have a GTX 1080 which is not exactly the most powerful card anymore but still really good and it would probably take a very long time to render on that. Also remember to use your GPU to render and maybe try using eevee as the render engine if it's really slow.
This is great, thank you. Could you please make a Mandelbulb tutorial?
Very Cool!!! Can you do a tutorial on Michael Hansmeyer "Subdivided Columns"
Hi! I love this animation and thank you for all the tutorials you do! But i have to say that the ending part of this tutorial is not complete, you didn't show how to set the materials and the lights to have a result like yours, which is amazing to be honest. For the shape of the fractal no problem at all, but the materials and the lights are missing and i'm doing a lot of experiments trying to have an effect similar to yours but i can't figure out how.
I just wondered that how you never forget about the quality of your content 🤯🔥
I try
Hi, your example looks very cool. It has large glowing zones and "thick" dark zones. I am not able to achieve this effect, although I have consistently increased the number of groups from 4 to 8. Please tell me, how did you do it?
You need to apply the Neglie Modifer first. He skipped it quickly as he speeds up the video.
@@onlinemodus the what modifier?!
same here :(
@@lucianhuja1079 sorry misspelled it
@@onlinemodus :) ok and the correct version is??
Fractals always blows my mind and I bet it blows the computer too
Lol,
I tried this but it doesn't seem to look like your scenes in this vid. Are you sure you didn't forget to add something? How are you able to make some parts transparent while having other parts a rough, dark material? lol
No it was live demo, but i used one more level of group node so that dense mesh helps create dark refractions.
@@CrossMindStudio Ohhh thanks! But is there a specific way of doing it? I'm not exactly sure how to add this
Same problem here been trying it for a whole day now it just looks dull or the glass looks too clear
@@samisparkar Hey I actuallyfigured it out, the key is to have a background HDRI so there is some extra light all around the object
@@alexandercorralignatyev9457 thank you i will try it out today 🤞
can anyone who has achieved the same result as the video explain how they did it? Ive read a load of the comments and followed the instructions and still i don't get similar results...from the video / comments it seems like the suggestions are more illeterations, increase lights radius, use ??? modifier or AO, use a hdri, use cycles etc
Thanks a lot 🧡
Always welcome
Why do I not have the option to extrude mesh when I search for it in the geometry node editor?
got the same problemo
Super clean tutorial ! I just have one question tho, in the final render how did you manage to make the cube have these thick black lines with the fractals on the surface ? Is it just lightining making this effect or you applied some sort of shading/effect ?
Use more group nodes it will make effect dense and hard for lights to pass through refractions. U cud also try reducing refraction(transmission) bounces in render settings
@@CrossMindStudio thanks a lot man !
Woow I think your tutorial will be during 1 hour but it's just 8min to have this amazing effects ! Masterclass 😍 ! Is it possible in the future to add the plugin Screencast to see your shortcut in real time ? Thanks a lot 😊
Watch chapter 3 it will help you with short commands.
I did install screencast it didnt work for some reason.
for me the parts that are not transmissive for you (the black parts) do not look at all like this. have you changed the glass or added some kind of environment texture?
I have the same issue.
looks like just a fancy cube to me instead of a fractal
wow!!
The best Channel in youtube ever 👌🏻❤❤
Thank you so much Man! Youre literally the best
Your channel is the best blender channel on UA-cam you deserve the best for all this effort you are making for free ... respect to you
So nice of you
incredible
03:33 and ı was like wooooaaaaa
supertutorial ! its fun i love fractals
👑
you're awesome, thank you.
you too
beautiful..pls upload more geometry nodes
Can you not now use this to extrude the actual surface so it’s a 3-D fractal?
It is 3d on surface and not a shader trick.
@@CrossMindStudio then I’d love to see you create some highly scaled morph targets
(in all axis) that can be exported to unreal as a true 3D fractal mesh
And then of course altered within unreal
Nvrmnd
I’ll do it:)
Then morph it to the beat of music
Just....
Wooooow
how to animate it?
This is very cool!
Hey man... do you render out in cycles or use octane for blender? Also for scattering foliage do you think using geo nodes is better than the old particles approach (performance-wise)? ...Also, Great Video :)
Yes geo nodes is better for scattering. I use cycles.

I'm learning things i can't find anywhere else on yt, thanks.
Glad to hear it!
How are you getting such granularity in your sliders when changing the scale, mine only goes up or down by 0.1 making it hard for smaller adjustments.
Thank you for the easy and straight forward tutorials. Very helpful and inspirational.

@@CrossMindStudio bro i just wanna make some fractal animations by copying your video.
Hi , thanks for your channel and Great tutorials ,but I can't add Extrude mesh in my geometry nodes, i can't find that... I'm using blender 3
Use 3.1
@@CrossMindStudio thanks, really appreciate your help, My problem was solved💥♥️
@@CrossMindStudio he meant 3.0
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! How did you end up getting some areas to be "solid" while others let the light from the blue point light in the center through (I'm using Glass BSDF with 1.45IOR as well)? Played with the compare offset in geo-nodes but I couldn't reproduce your cube style
i used used 5 iterations of extrusion ( 5 group nodes) that produces really dense mesh. there is no solid, all that you see are extruded faces, just that when you have too many overlapping faces it becomes darker and cant see light through it.
Thank you! I’ll try this later
I’m having the same issue with the glass. Mine just looks clear and sparkly without the dark areas like in the video.
@@mothywood try adding one more extrude group. It will make mesh dense. But save ur file first in case it gets heavy.
@@CrossMindStudio Thanks! With 7-8 groups it started looking like the one in the video. Also, to anyone else struggling with it, make sure the point light source inside the cube is sized to be larger than the cube itself.
This is great, liked and subbed
Awesome, imma use this somewhere
I started with you good sir and you are one of the best!

@@CrossMindStudio Thanks! I am watching these now, great tutorials. BTW for this tutorial can you explain how in finished product the material is not only glass material but also has some darker texture around the edges of the shape?
How do you search content for Blender new videos?
this render will take forever for my rtx2060 laptop :D im not sure should i do it or nat :D
Or you could try some simple materials instead of glass. Glass renders slower.
I add few more geo nodes i play with ior with light but i dont get result like this, my glass look like idk standart glass, how you make it?
try and add another group of extrude, it will make the mesh dense and glass will look heavy. be careful file might hang.
Yes yes yes
Great tutorial but the result is totally different :)
Try adding another group of extrude and it will make mesh really dense. And it would be difficult for light to pass through the dense areas.
ty !
Rendering glass material is such a pain. I tried decreasing transmission value but still no effect in render time . Even turned off caustics but still no effect. Any suggestions to reduce render time.
Yes it could take time if you have average cpu or gpu,
Also, if you are struggling with rendering too much, i would suggest try some other kind of materials
may be Translucent, or Glossy etc, effect looks nice with other materials as well.
adjust your Noise Threshold under Sampling - Render - it's default set is 0.01, but 0.03 should be fine on a decent computer. It essentially speeds up or slows render times based on how low or high you have it
🙌You are JODD
"Do you have 8 minutes to get your mind blown?"
Yes, bring it on.
Would this be easy to work with an m1 macbookpro rendering wise? (to get this visual quality of reflections/ texture without super long rendering?
M1 i have heard are pretty good, but for these fractals to create solid lines at corner you need to use multiple of groups and make it dense one. Try one step at a time and see how it performs.
But try on your own risk XD
Far out mate!!

Geo Nodes is overwhelming... I just cannot wrap my head around this feature. Very interesting, but not for everyone.
True, even i find it difficult to fully understand the potential of it. However even if you get the basics right, you will end up doing things wouldnt have otherwise.
