Thank you for this very helpful video, I am currently studying statistics as part of my Psychology degree and your video explains thematic analysis using Nvivo brilliantly!!!!! I'm so so grateful!
Thank you for your kind words! Yeah i wished someone did this when i did mine so i wanted to help out. If you need any help with anything give me a shout! Would you be interested in one about how to prepare for viva? Also good luck with the phd, you'll get there!
however we are not in the same field of study,i still found this video very helpful!i wish someone was helping me the way you are doing right now!Feeling really powerless through this PhD!
PhDs are incredibly tough, you're doing something less than 2% of the global population does so give yourself some slack Louise! There were times I was banging my head against the desk and other times the PhD was so easy. It ebs and flows. Make sure you've got a plan, get a good supportive team around you. If your supervisors aren't helping, ask them to.
@@AnthonyCliffePHD the supervisor really isnt so i have to learn everything on my own as i did during my masters studiesThank God for UA-cam and caring people like you!
@@virgirma1328_PhD_scholar I was on a scholarship too, unfortunately this happened to a friend of mine who went through a similar thing. I would advise that you try and open a dialogue with your supervisors about it (i know it's awkward!) and the doctoral academy. If that doesn't work then seek help from others but keep it quiet is my advice. You can absolutely finish this PhD, you can do it!
Say for example participant A had a different view to participant B for the same code. Should one generate a different code? Also, what level of detail should a code have before it becomes very fragmented?
This would depend on your code do you have one for positive things about X and one for negative things about X or one for anything to do with X. If you have just anything to do with X that's fine as you'll be looking at the code through the theme to find participants who agree/disagree when writing up. Coding is subjective to the researcher you can go as detailed as you'd like. I'd try and stay away from very broad codes as ideally, theme generation will come from combining and eliminating your more detailed codes. If you have too broad a code it makes it harder for you to pick out the nuience difference. Check out my thematic coding video on my channel. I hope this helps!
HI thanks for this video its really helpful! I was wondering how many quotes should i use for point i am making. I have done 24 interviews and i am using about 3 - 5 quotes / point. Is this enough ? I am writing a PhD thesis and the interviews are part of the exploratory stage of the research not the main findings
Hello! Honestly it depends, sometimes just the one quote is enough as a summary of all of the participants. Sometimes 5 is needed if they have conflicting views, i wouldn't use 5 all of the time because you don't want the point being repeated too much. Your quotes are there to support the overall argument but not to over take it if that makes sense?
how I could show that ı have made thematic analysis in Nnivo and codes that ı made in my research report .I have to show those in findings section please help.
Sorry for the slow reply! Your subsections of your results/discussion are evidence of your themes as that's why you're writing what you're writing. So your theme maybe section 2 and then the subthemes within that will be 2.1 2.2 etc. You can also display a table at the start of your discussion chapter with the themes and the number of times they appear
This Video just saved my life. I wasn't sure how to represent the codes in my Master thesis but now everything is clear. thank you!

Thank you for your comment Layla! Good luck with your studies!
This is such a great walk-through of your process. Thank you for taking the time to make and share this with the rest of us bamboozled PhDs :)
