    I came across a timeless piece of advice that she said was the key to generating power.
    The advice is from 1964, when Wright was at the peak of her powers. Asked by host Gene Sarazen how to groove a more powerful golf swing, Wright shared one of her favorite drills.
    It’s pretty simple: She places a tee about 12 inches behind her golf ball down the “intended line of flight,” or the target line.
    Her goal is to simply make sure she knocks the tee away on her takeaway.
    In Mickey’s own words:
    “Knock the tee down; it will ensure I’m keeping the clubhead long, low, and wide away from the ball. With this wide start, you’re automatically ensured you’ll make the biggest arc possible to the golf swing."
    By starting her backswing in this manner, Wright explains that she’s widening her swing arc (which prevents her from swinging too steeply down onto the ball, a common cause of slicing among so many golfers) and helps transfer her weight fully onto her trail side by the top of the backswing. - A simple but effective piece of advice that will live on as a small part of Mickey Wright’s gift to the game.

    I caddies for Mickey Wright, 2 years in a row, at early LPGA tournament in Louisville Kentucky at Hunting Creek CC. She won 1 lost 1. Next year I got Kathy Whitworth, she won. Both fantastic swings and putters, now I can tell you this, Mickey paid 3x what Kathy paid. Funny when you are young, always remember $. LOL

      Over the course of her career, Wright, who died on Feb. 17 2020 at the age of 85, won four U.S. Women’s Open titles, which ties Betsy Rawls for the most ever. In addition, Wright has seven top-three finishes and 10 top-five finishes in the championship. She was the first player to win consecutive Women’s Opens, in 1958 at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and in 1959 at Churchill Valley Golf Club in Blackridge, Pa. She added victories in 1961 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., and 1964 at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
      Wright also won the 1952 U.S. Girls’ Junior and received the Bob Jones Award, the USGA’s highest honor, in 2010. In 2012, she became the fourth golfer - and first woman - to be honored with her own exhibition room at the USGA Golf Museum in Liberty Corner, N.J., joining Ben Hogan, Bob Jones and Arnold Palmer. She donated more than 200 personal items for the Mickey Wright Room, which can be visited by the general public. Jack Nicklaus became the fifth person to have a dedicated room in the museum in 2015 and is the only other person to have a USGA championship medal named after him, an honor that was bestowed in 2012 with the gold medal that is awarded to the U.S. Open champion.
      “The USGA has been a big part of my life since 1950 when I played in my first Girls’ Junior,” Wright said in 2012. “To win five of their championships, the U.S. Girls’ Junior and four Women’s Opens, has always been my most cherished accomplishment in golf. My only regret was not being able to win a fifth Women’s Open. Someday, perhaps, someone will.”
      Regarded as one of the greatest players in the game’s history, Wright was renowned for her powerful and beautifully rhythmic swing, which was described as the greatest ever by Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. She amassed 82 LPGA Tour victories, including 13 major championships. Both totals are second-most in women’s golf. Between 1961 and 1962, Wright became the only woman to hold four major titles at the same time, a record she still holds. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1976 and the Associated Press named her the female golfer of the century in 1999.

    Mary Kathryn "Mickey" Wright was the greatest female player of all-time & it's not close. She is the only player to win both the US Women's Open & the LPGA 4 times each. They are the 2 oldest & most prestigious events in women's golf. She also won at least 10 events in a year an unequaled 4 consecutive times including the still all-time best 13 in 1963. Wright also won a major in 7 consecutive years (1958-64) which is unmatched by any man or women.

    “The best golf swing” is about results, not aesthetics. Therefore, to take putting and chipping out of it, whoever has consistently the best tee to green strokes gained data is the person who has “the best golf swing”. PGA tour data only goes back to ‘04. Tiger led tee to green in 06, 07, and 09, with 06 being a whopping 2.982 strokes gained tee to green over the field (the highest recorded data we have). Notably, Rory has led in 19, 14, and 12, with 12 being 2.347.

      There is another source that could shed light on earlier players. In Dave Pelz early years he used to walk the courses and chart players shots in the 1970s and 1980s. According to his data Lee Trevino was the most accurate ball striker.

    • @Somefatdude
      @Somefatdude 2 роки тому +1

      @@SasquatchTour thanks for sharing. That was probably the precursor to advanced data collection. Trevino was certainly a great player in his time period. Not sure he would do as well with today’s players, even if handed the same equipment, but I’m a fan of his.

    • @SasquatchTour
      @SasquatchTour 2 роки тому +1

      @@Somefatdude I grew up in the Tiger era, in fact he is several years older than me. As far as Trevino making it today I would say I would never bet against a legend, they always find a way to win because they have that gene other very good athletes don't. I would also be very careful dismissing the older guys because those guys had to play well or they didn't eat. Trevino would probably have the distance of Justin Rose and the fact that he was the most accurate tee to green would make him tough but I do get your point. Bryson proved the value of strokes gained power which is making guys like Zach Johnson less competitive. The reason I liked your comment about results is because I agree with you 100%,, I think Trevinos swing is beautiful. I may be getting my stories mixed up a little but I remember Butch Harmon telling a story about a time he was at a tournament with his dad and Hogan at the range. Harmons dad said they should stop and watch this guy with a beautiful swing hit balls and Hogan kept walking and stopped behind another guy with an ugly swing and watched him hit for 5 minutes. When Butches dad asked why he didn't look at the other guy with the beautiful swing Hogan replied I did watch the guy with the beautiful swing and that guy shot -4 compared to the other guy at +2. The ugly swing golfers name was never mentioned but imagine it in mind that Hogan watched Barber Miller or Trevino. My argument for Trevino was simply that weird looking swing are a matter of opinion, the results are what counts which is what you were stating. I did notice you mentioned Tiger and Rory for strokes gained tee to green leaders but I can guarantee that Nicklaus led that category most of his career and achieved that feat maybe as much as Tiger and Rory combined. The data is a little more crude but if you look at total driving stat it was started in 1980. Nicklaus led the tour in total driving the first 3 years that stats were recorded and also led Greens in Regulation in 1980 and was 2nd and 5th the following years as his career declined into his mid 40s. Jack was known as a great iron player so my guess is if he led the tour at the end of his career he probably dominated the strokes gained tee to green from 1960 to 1979 before stats were published. My argument is if results define beauty than Nicklaus swing is the most beautiful of all time.

    • @h1e2x3
      @h1e2x3 2 роки тому +1

      Nope. The best golf swing is the closest to automatic one that ends almost always with desired result. You all forget that golf is not only tee-to-green play but also putting. The most automatic swing paired with mediocre putting will never guarantee desired results. The best golfer is a combination of all things -- tee-to-green, short game and putting. You do not understand those who just admire only the best full swings and I won't blame you. Such guys as Palmer, Nicklaus and Woods are the best golfers, but not because they had the best full swings. They are lights out behind such as Mehlhorn, Kirkwood, Hogan and Snead who could be lights on ahead them if they could pitch, chip and putt as the best.

    • @Somefatdude
      @Somefatdude 2 роки тому +1

      @@h1e2x3 no, putting and chipping have nothing to do with the golf swing. They’re called “the short game” for a reason. There’s a difference between tee to green and the short game. We’ve been talking about the best swing, not the best overall game or even short game.
