In depth interviews with older convicts serving time behind the walls of Pelican Bay State Prison. For more videos from around California's north coast visit times-standard.com.
The original series this was from was about older inmates specifically because of the same reason you are stating... Their stories are different and often over-looked.
The 3 strikes principle means that people can easily get a life sentence for shoplifting, even if it's just a few dollars worth of food, if they've had serious priors . . .
These guys have made a career of living in prison off of the taxpayers money. Institutionalized inmates are an unnecessary drain on society. Way to go, man.
I find it incredible that 1 in 100 American citizens are in prison. That is a hell of a ration. In the UK its 1 in 750, France is 1 in 850. Whats going on over there? Can someone enlighten me please?
Some people are in prison for victimless crimes like posession of weed or something. Also five years for shoplifting was harsh if it was his first time.
It's not as clear cut as lots think. Often private companies cost the state less than doing it themselves for things like med or psych services. I have worked for both state and private. The company I work for is really pretty good & saves the state money but personally, corrections is one of the few things I dont think should be turned over to private companies. Just on a principal kind of thing. Even if the state saves money there is a profit motive in the system.
I don't think there is evidence that this guy was locked up for 5 years because he was poor or "low status." There is not enough information to know. What if he committed numerous crimes before the shoplifting? How many crimes must a criminal commit before he receives a significant prison sentence?
Suppose someone was stupid and did something illegal when they were younger, should they always have a criminal record on their backs because of their stupidity? We're not perfect, we're human beings, and make mistakes. Some are big, some are small. What I don't agree with is criminal records. You go to prison, you do your time, then you should be out a free man. With criminal records, you aren't free at all. So basically, once you're in the prison, you never go outside.
"Play games, listen to the radio, watch CSI on T.V.". I've been working for 37 years, and can barely keep a roof over my head, while paying federal income tax, state income tax, social security tax, property tax, utilitiy taxes, gas tax, sales tax, dividend tax, interest tax, etc... When will people (sheep) wake up and start demanding better from their elected officials? Government was originally designed to work FOR the people, not the people working for government .
@allbiznessboxing There is really not any prison industry left. It costs more in additional security ect than anything these guys produce. Any industry or work programs are an attempt at rehab, not making money.
@mrfatd laws are VERY dis-proportionate. Most of our jails are filled with non-violent offenders; many for drug crimes. States like California are on the "verge" of legalizing it, but don't get caught with a joint in Texas! This has nothing to do with weather or not you think drugs should be legal; this has to do with "What's good for the goose is good for the gander" i.e. - sentencing should be equal if ALL elements of the crime are equal; race or location should NOT influence sentencing-IMO
At least the man is proud of someting and taking the job of other peoples eye-wear seriously! SOMETIMES COMPANIES ACTUALLY GET BETTER WORKERS IN PRISON! Less drugs, distrac tions, and other addictions make it possible for hi-tech jobs to be in prisons. It is also good because if women and men cannot pay their CHILD SUPPORT in the free-world, they can pay it in prison!
......... and for this reason we should all agree that the prison system should change, but that's not going to happen, because who really cares about criminals?
If these guys had jobs like at 5:30, that paid enough for a mortgage and a car, with a little left over for a vacation and a hobby, would they throw that all away to go back to jail?
Must've been his third strike . I saw a woman in for life after stealing some track suit bottoms , because it was her third strike . Maybe the authorities think it will deter recidivism , it doesn't seem to be working so far though .
Those guys are from population. The CM inmates (Close Management) those awaiting DR boards, those on Death Row don't have that luxury, well, Death Row does have TV's and Cigarettes. It all pretty much depends on the Prison. Simple incidents could make you lose all GT, Monk....
@OneEyedJack1970: Shoplifting becomes a felony if you've been convicted of it at least twice (in the state of Michigan, anyway). But what I wanna know is what the hell is a 60 something year old doing shoplifting?!? You would think he'd know better than that at that age!!!
Prisons in England are like going on holiday! It costs like £35 thousand pounds per year to keep one inmate in prison and they get TV and games for fucks sake! What a joke!
@shananagans5 Ok, point taken. I just read it like you were saying no one was making money, which would be the wrong impression for those just getting interested in the issue. And of course, I am not taking issue with guards as much as I am large companies, like the suppliers, consultants and administrators working on contract. Anyway, thanks for clarifying (usually UA-cam comments are like screaming against a hurricane). ^^
@mrfatd yeah and the fucked up thing here that really disturbs me is that if a 16 year old kills another 16 year old here in sweden he only gets 1 year and 8 months... I mean, poor guy, 5 years for shoplifting. thats.. wrong
@chrissline77 but the whole point of prison is to rehabilitate the prisoners. I mean if they go out, it means that they've been successfully rehabilitated and thus can continue living like all normal citizens. For this reason, I find it unfair why you should base your hiring on whether someone committed a crime some years ago. Of course I can understand you, I wouldn't hire someone like that either, but that's because the prison system is corrupt and people who go out become worse than before.
the guy at 1:50 seems like a gentleman. i mean, sometimes good people have to steal becuase their cricumstances render that... if you had no money and your wife and kid were hungry, damn right u would steal...its called survival... i heard i guy getting 6 years for killing a pregnant woman and this guy got 5 years for shoplifting...its wrong
i think they are goin to start doin that...i heard it on the news a couple weeks ago like jersey isgoin to be the first...they are talkin about billing the immates after conviction...interesting.
Most celebrity actors would get told no 100 times out of 100.Criminals especially the petty thefts lack patientance.Rejection and faliure are a part of success. That mantality"of corse they are going back to",just locks some in ignorance of their mistakes and misunderstanding of how to be successfull. Then thier are some that know good and well where their messing up.The felons have a way they can succeed, they just din,t explore that way.
UNLESS YOU'RE doing time for a Drinking and driving related charge! At least in T.N. you dont, you can't even get 2 for 1 if your chage has anything to do with alcol and driving. But hell, Id work anyway, beats sitting on yer ass going crazy!
I've had friends and known a fair amount of people who were Meth users. I, luckily, never liked Meth. The supporters of the "War on Drugs" think that longer prison sentences will help fight Meth use. I've never yet met a Meth user who gave a damn about the risks of Jail or Prison. Tweakers and Crack Heads just don't give a damn about cops or the law in general. We gotta treat Meth addicts like a person with a health problem. Tougher laws aren't gonna help one bit...
maaan..prisons in the usa is like a 5 star hotel..inmates in that prison live better than most middle class people in my country! the only element they are missing is freedom but other than that they are being pampered..come see prisons in Egypt or 3rd world countries in general and you would lick the ground of the usa everyday and thank Allah you are a usa citizen
@Nicodeme001 Ah ok, I thought you meant the dude.. But word man, system over there is crazy! But everyone knows, prison is big business, cheap labor and they get a fee for every prisoner.
@shananagans5 Oh, man. There is a lot of money being made. It may not be by your state gov't or the feds, but lots of companies are making money. Therein lies the incentive. Can't rant about it now, but do some more looking around and you will find that this system keeps lots of people very wealthy.
I don't care what you're shoplifting, there's nothing valuable enough in a shop to jail a man for 5 years for trying to steal it. I didn't even think they'd give 1 year (first offence). Pretty silly.
@mrfatd yup and u can even get ten years for selling steros or food or anything that is a store item without a licewnce to sell that item if u get arreasted the 3rd time for it u can get that time the system is fucked u'll be suprized what can get you hard time
OK im kinda late to the conversation, don't take this personal but how the fuck does the gov. make money on prisoners? doesn't it cost like 70 Gs to keep a prisoner locked up a year or some shit, I'm not saying your wrong but could you explain?
fucking ridiculouss how do you get all your life tookin away for stealing?? da fuck? thats crazy..i feel like somebody should only get life or even over 15 years if htey are a danger when they get out.or if they killed more than like 2 or 3 people
to many people like being tough guys over here, big hip hop influence over here...its still mostly 70 percent black or something.....not even being rascist just stating the truth For the most part black people have to keep it real hahahhaha
that armed robber seemed like a fairly decent, sensible human being.
The original series this was from was about older inmates specifically because of the same reason you are stating... Their stories are different and often over-looked.
Thank you for this. Three quite interesting nonrapist guys.
The guy they are interviewing in what appears to be a library at 1:50 the row of books on the fourth shelf, is it me or are they blurred?
Still five years for shoplifting was pretty harsh.
Damn, that sounds pretty sweet. Sounds like my day, I'm in high school, only they don't have to do school work.
Force. Nice concept. And when they get out? Maybe move into your neighborhood.
the guy that cuts the lenses for the eye glasses..if he lived in Jersey, he would make a good living being an optician..hope he does well for himself
Why not a 3 strike rule for corporate crimes?
It's not as clear cut as lots think. Often private companies cost the state less than doing it themselves for things like med or psych services. I have worked for both state and private. The company I work for is really pretty good & saves the state money but personally, corrections is one of the few things I dont think should be turned over to private companies. Just on a principal kind of thing. Even if the state saves money there is a profit motive in the system.
you know there's an easy way to avoid that, don't break the laws of the society that govern us.
I don't think there is evidence that this guy was locked up for 5 years because he was poor or "low status." There is not enough information to know. What if he committed numerous crimes before the shoplifting? How many crimes must a criminal commit before he receives a significant prison sentence?

You go to prison, you do your time, then you should be out a free man. With criminal records, you aren't free at all. So basically, once you're in the prison, you never go outside.
you don't get 5 years for shoplifting unless there are other factors, priors, etc.
the guy at 1:55 lifted a whole shop? the same body shop the previous guy worked in?
"Play games, listen to the radio, watch CSI on T.V.". I've been working for 37 years, and can barely keep a roof over my head, while paying federal income tax, state income tax, social security tax, property tax, utilitiy taxes, gas tax, sales tax, dividend tax, interest tax, etc... @allbiznessboxing There is really not any prison industry left. It costs more in additional security ect than anything these guys produce. Any industry or work programs are an attempt at rehab, not making money.
i want to go there, sounds like a holiday camp
@mrfatd laws are VERY dis-proportionate. Most of our jails are filled with non-violent offenders; many for drug crimes. I know, was just about to ask that too. That's F'ed up.
@brek5 lol well yea. I am one of those people. I was simply pointing out that putting inmates to work costs more than they produce.
Yeah the black guy that said shop lifting most likely was arrested for multiple shoplifting/theft offense's.
I thought Pelican Bay SP was for the hardened prison gang members & bosses.
......... and for this reason we should all agree that the prison system should change, but that's not going to happen, because who really cares about criminals?
5 years of their life for stealing something worth what, 8 hours of work?
@Terminator860 Looks like someone didn't make it to 8th grade, now try reading it again, nice and slow this time so you have a chance to comprehend.
If these guys had jobs like at 5:30, that paid enough for a mortgage and a car, with a little left over for a vacation and a hobby, would they throw that all away to go back to jail?
5 years for shoplifting?? Wtf did that guy shoplift??!!
reminds me of the phsyc ward i was in.. except i got injected with sedation every 10 - 15 hours..
Must've been his third strike . I saw a woman in for life after stealing some track suit bottoms , because it was her third strike . Maybe the authorities think it will deter recidivism , it doesn't seem to be working so far though .
Holy shit, did that guy say hegot 5 years in prison for shoplifting?
The guy at 1:30 ironically looks a lot like the manager at my bank...
@MaximusRelaximus I have to agree with you in this case.
Those guys are from population. The CM inmates (Close Management) those awaiting DR boards, those on Death Row don't have that luxury, well, Death Row does have TV's and Cigarettes. It all pretty much depends on the Prison. Simple incidents could make you lose all GT, Monk....

prison looks like so much fun i so wanna go
just don't talk unless you've been through it, ktnx
Prisons in England are like going on holiday! It costs like £35 thousand pounds per year to keep one inmate in prison and they get TV and games for fucks sake! What a joke!
I thought shoplifting was a misdemeanor.
If I was the President of the USA, the first thing I'd do is let a lot of people out of jail!
he forgot to tell the hole story,
he is a criminal thru and thru
In the Middle East you get your hands cut off. And you know that's permanent so I'd rather get 5 years than never be able to use my hands
a carrer criminal will never change its ways, if i was in charge, i would make them go to sleep forever. for the greater good of society.
That's a pretty old and common saying.
It is a good one though :)
@mrfatd yeah and the fucked up thing here that really disturbs me is that if a 16 year old kills another 16 year old here in sweden he only gets 1 year and 8 months...
I mean, poor guy, 5 years for shoplifting. thats.. wrong
5 fucking years for shoplifting? OH MY GOD!
daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn 5 year for shop lifting
5 years....?...... shoplifting.........?Hold on something is not adding up. i dont know where they are but this is a medium facility no doubt
u can get a job in there? where should i apply??
@chrissline77 but the whole point of prison is to rehabilitate the prisoners. Black Dolphin is awesome.
again depending on the crime, and wether or not he is a repeat offender.
which prison is that?
it's about time the 'justice' system cracked down on criminals, even for petty crimes. most of them get away with murder (no pun intended)
@girraboyzz
Or maybe he's had so many shoplifting charges against him that they got sick and tired of it because he wasn't learning his lesson
the guy at 1:50 seems like a gentleman. i mean, sometimes good people have to steal becuase their cricumstances render that... if you had no money and your wife and kid were hungry, damn right u would steal...its called survival... i heard i guy getting 6 years for killing a pregnant woman and this guy got 5 years for shoplifting...its wrong

5 years for fucking shoplifting, what kind of bollocks is that!
Maybe he had prior convictions?
lol...i got the same 5 day "vacation" and it sucked!!
True that, 200092
Damn he got a 5 year bid for shoplifting??
5 years for shop lifting wtf?

lookin4brainz wow someone got owned
he probably got the 5 years for shop lifting because he was a repeat offender
Thats a bit caustic. It was just a "what if" scenario.
You're a disturbed individual.
UNLESS YOU'RE doing time for a Drinking and driving related charge!
At least in T.N. you dont, you can't even get 2 for 1 if your chage has anything to do with alcol and driving. But hell, Id work anyway, beats sitting on yer ass going crazy!

@Terminator860
It's ridiculous not rediculous
@Nicodeme001 Ah ok, I thought you meant the dude..
But word man, system over there is crazy! But everyone knows, prison is big business, cheap labor and they get a fee for every prisoner.
