I've been in solitary before in CT and it was only 20 days. It felt like an eternity. I am so grateful for my freedom. Just to be around my loved ones... To feel the warmth of my wife. It's amazing. Savor it people.

We are supposed to savor our freedom as a being on this planet because others of our species might decide that you broke THEIR rules. I am all about having a justice system but it is obviously broken in America.

I went to prison for drug charges in my early twenties and did 90 days in the hole in Jackson prison inside the old hospital. The worse part of the time I did was the incessant yelling from guys who had lost there minds. They would literally wail all day all night about their hallucinations. Besides the time inside the dog run and shower cage it was lock down. No books No human interaction. Luckily I didnt have any adverse psychological affects but I seen guys go insane in even a few months.
I'm sorry for what you went through.

I was put in solitary confinement & exactly like you said, be grateful & appreciate your freedom because once your locked inside that concrete closet it's the beginning of true dark evil.
I spent 2 years 8 months in the hole , I also did 15 years on the main line. Over all I have nightmares still to this day from the hole time. I have been out of prison for 5 years now and doing good. I still have a hard time being around people or going to stores . If it was not for my wife I would have locked my self. Am not trying to get any one to feel bad for me. I did a lot of bad things and I deserved prison. Am just saying I feel for they’s men. Thank you 🇺🇸

you do hear shit. its so trippy man. specially being a teenager in there.. only did ten days. thats it. felt like a fucking year.
What did you hear
I was 14 in a cell for two days (not my first time, but first time like this and for this long) and I didn’t eat the two plastic sandwiches they gave me. The lights were on the whole time and a guard would walk by and punch in every thirty minutes so it was hard to fall asleep, they would rarely tell us the time and at one point I heard a couple of them laughing and watching a movie. The only good thing about that situation was the fact that my friends were next to me and I almost couldn’t hear them, and the worst part about it is when I was in the court hearing my family (at least in my case) has to pay the fines and the fees for something I did. It’s been 11 months I’m on house arrest which if I break I go to court again and my family has to pay a 5 grand fine, I find out how much time I’m getting in 5 days and if I can ill serve every second of it in solitary because at least right now, I feel at peace when I’m alone. My message to anyone reading this is don’t put yourself in a situation like I’m in because its truly torment on every level.

I was in solitary confinement at a mental hospital for 2 weeks, I hated it. I was stuck barely even saw staff. The only sun light I could see was the window on the roof in one of my rooms. It’s made me learn a lot about myself. I’d never wish it on anyone else but it really helped me see myself different and be more grateful of my freedom
The hapiness that guy had being interviewed for this video exhibit the sadness and how little contact he has within those walls.

I am currently in a relationship with a gentleman who spent 10 years straight in the pelican bay shu... and the stories I hear I’m surprised that he is able to function as well as he does.. when the spirit is broken on that level it’s life changing and these guy’s require a lot of love and patience... something needs to be done to change the prison system!!!

I’ve spent years back there and if it wasn’t for a letter I received that gave me hope I honestly would have left mentally broken from solitary. I hate to say it but a lot of us actually deserved to be there.
The department of corrections system is there because people forgot to teach their offspring how to behave civilized. They also failed to teach their offspring the concept of consequences one has to deal with based on making really bad decisions in their lives. Some consequences are very severe like being sentenced to solitary confinement for comitting very violent crimes like assault and battery or brutally murdering other people.
Why would you want a relationship with a guy that's inside?
@@pasofino2199 I've been writing to a brother for 13 years, now in Pelican Bay. He's been going downhil physically and mentally since there. I know he's got himself there for making stupid decisions but I can't give on him. I was "a letter" that dropped into his cell. Its a big commitment to keep someone encouraged in that environment, but someone needs to care.

the fact that there are so many people in the comments defending this is disgusting. this treatment is inhumane. prisons are meant to be for rehabilitation of criminals, not for their torment. why have people locked in small rooms their whole lives when you could teach them how to integrate into normal society again without wanting to commit crimes?
You think they haven't tried? Prison these days is more of a free home than a rehab center, it doesn't teach inmates anything. It only gives them time to think about who to get revenge on when they're out.
Prison is not for rehabilitation if one's sentence is life without possibility of parole. Plain and simple, it is a warehouse operation. If they got to this point, they did some bad shit - like murdering someone for financial gain, with pre-meditation, lying in wait, kidnapping, using a firearm, etc. Really Bad people.

I have never heard a better speech than the gentleman at the end. He knew when to finish, he had said all he needed and knew he had been understood, thats why he said ok.
I think he also said okay because a guard said it was times up but I agree he spoke well for someone who is in isolation.
Worked in prisons 26 yrs. Worked a max joint, worked isolation units, worked death row. These people are MONSTERS! It's impossible to make you understand what demons they are. They are master manipulaters. Rarely do you meet one who doesn't deserve to be there. I've been retired 10 yrs. I deal with depression, anxiety, persecutory paranoia and ptsd. DO NOT PITY THESE WALKING NIGHTMARES!!

They do have jobs and they barely get paid. One example was them fighting fires last year but they weren't allowed to list it on their resume. It's modern day slave labor.

The lights are the worst, 24/7 with the lights on. The screaming and the smells, and the high school age guards. Nobody comes out better, if they come out at all.

Time in the box isn't something everyone can cope with.. I myself did a year in the SHU at upstate correctional facility in Malone county New York... Although my mind was strong enough to deal with the say thing 24 hour's a day there were some who would bang there heads on the steel door in an attempt to silence the demons in their minds I can only think of how tragic it must be to go that distance I thank God everyday I came out intact in body and mine to those still there my heart goes out to them and their families there are some there who been in solitary confinement for over 25 years.
Served 12 yrs.. Did a 60 day, a 90 day and a 9 month term in the box myself.
Never forget all the brothers we left behind and pray that they may find and maintain the strength to keep on keepin on.. until freedom finds them..

The prison system in USA is so fucked up looking from the eyes of an outsider. I think what is more important than shoving these people into small, dark rooms is mental healthcare. If you put people into a box for 22,5 hours a day their amount of hatred will just rise.

one of the most important things to consider here is how often people are wrongly imprisoned. our prisons and jails are full of innocent people. we are locking up 13 and 14 year old kids for smoking cigarette

I've learned a lot about solitary confinement from courses I've taken over the years. Prisoners that are kept in isolation (sometime referred to as a Special Housing Unit), are kept there because they are considered to be a threat to the prison in which they are held. They typically receive different colored tops to wear to separate their status from the general population prisoners. So, someone from a SHU could be clothed in deep red; whereas an inmate from general population could be clothed in kiwi green.
Their voices were trembling that depicts what they have been gone through.
And what about the trembling voices of their victims?
They should install one of those screens that can project different scenery on them and actually give them something to do in there at the very least. How does solitary confinement not count as "cruel or unusual punishment".

I think the logic behind them not getting rid of extended stays in solitary is that they need something, a punishment, to serve as a deterrent for bad behavior. They don't send you to solitary for extended periods for no reason. You really have to mess up...and mess up multiple times in order to be sent there for an extended period of time. Tommy Silvlerstein killed what, 2 or 3 people (including guards) before they finally threw away the key to his cell.. If you get caught smoking, they arent going to give you a year in the hole. You REALLY have to mess up.

So if i go to jail for a traffic ticket get into a fight in jail that will end up in me going to the hole and getting more time. Now what if someone hits me i hit her she falls and dies now im a "murderer" and if a murderer does anything wrong im deff going to the hole...see how that works? The system is designed to break us down its modern-day slavery this is not right at all

The goal of prison was to rehabilitate and reform people. It's not that anymore, it's a system of _vengeance_, not _justice_.
We should be putting these people into mental healthcare. They can become better people. They should have a chance to live life again.
Those who cannot, after an intensive amount of mental care, become different people should be put in prison.

I did 5 days in solitary, with full restrictions. It didnt break me, but how I had to cope would eventually fail. I felt this. Only some form of self hypnosis can get you through. After a few days, my main goal was to not think about life on the outside. I kept the image of the gunslinger walking through a desert, and would let it build to sleep or full distraction.
Did have other dudes to yell to across the way, and a guard walking by or down the hall to harass for things.
Is it inhumane? For sure. If a person just can't hold it together, then what? Not holding it together, while not able to do anything about it, will snap your mind, and imagine months and years to go still. The side effects of the punishment should be monitored as a medical issue, because it can be a form of torture, not just isolation.
Prisons are meant to rehabilitate the criminals not enrage them even more. This treatment is inhumane and cruel.
Name one prison in the entire world that "rehabilitates" criminals. Rehabilitation sounds really good to spectators, but politicians won't pay for it and inmates can't be forced to. It's an illusion.

Those conditions should be administered for short term penalties of prison rules, not long term periods of incarceration. That is extreme torture.

Wrong. The difference is our action is a reaction. We didn’t start it. Solitary confinement should only be reserved for very special cases though i.e. the Bundys and Dahmers of this world. It actually feels good that there is such a strong punishment for the sick sociopaths like them that are caught.

Like at lot of things in our world and society solitary get misused,I don’t believe people should do indefinite periods of time for gang affiliation, fights,things of that nature,but what about the guy that murders 9 women, sexually molest and kills children and is caught,serial killers. The guy that heaven forbid rapes and murders your relative, you think solitary is to harsh a punishment?

If you lock an animal up like this you would be charged with a felony for being cruel the that animal.
Prisons: state and federal, are charged with protecting inmates from each other. When an inmate kills another inmate, do you allow that inmate to stay in GP because you think isolation is mean, or do you protect other inmates by isolating him? When that inmate is a shot caller and tells his gang to kill other inmates, do you leave him in GP, or isolate him? Until you've run a maximum security prison, try not to be so condescending to people that have and do the best they can managing apex predators.

I loved solitary confinement, i spent years in isolation since i was a little kid. I hate human beings and human contact. Iv always lived inside my head since i was 6 years old.

My husband was at PBSP SHU for 7.5 years... Just awful.. still suffering the after effects from being there. He was in C12 last..in and out of mental crisis beds.. can't even program right as bad as he wants to. No rehabilitation whatsoever.
I served a 12 year sentence. Even now in the free world I continue to do that time as the struggle to prevent the time to do me. Although I never met him I consider your husband a brother in arms so to speak. Tell him to fight the good fight and keep on keepin on in the free world.

you guys need to do this again with Leopoldo Lopez. he has 2 years in confinement because he was a leader of opposition of the dictatorship in Venezuela.. he was sent to jail because he was fighting to make our country free again from those rats from Venezuela government

In my experience, the 23 and 1 guys were either child molesters, killers, rapists, or other very high offenses like that.

this is something I'm torn on. assuming these people are here for a reason, they did something to get there. but personall I can't imagine not having human contact or not seeing outside for that long. it's a strange feeling that im feeling and words can't describe the mixed emotions. thank you natgeo.
Tami: I know this is a really old comment but I worked Psych Services in the prison system for many years. These guys are not without human contact. They can talk to other inmates, security etc. If you notice, in the film here, the pods have doors the inmates can talk through. They just aren't allowed physical contact with other inmates. Different facilities call it different things, SHU (Security Housing Unit) Iso (Isolation) Seg but they are all typically set up the same way. They have 12 cells. This allows each guy 2 hours out a day. They let one person at a time out. They can walk around the pod, talk to other guys on the pod, shower, or go outside. Here, they try to make it sound like these guys are locked in a concrete box with no human interaction. That's not the case. They just don't have physical contact with other inmates.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it isn't a terrible place to be. It is terrible but they do have the opportunity to talk and interact with others regularly.

The inmates interviewed were very articulate and thoughtful people. Their testimony is proof of true change and mental stability that cannot be simulated by an acting criminal / societal menace.

All the Stockholm Syndrome in the comments is disgusting. No one deserves this, no matter the crime. What on earth does torturing people accomplish? You're not reducing the amount of murderers in the world. You're DEFINITELY not reducing the suffering in the world. Just wait for someone new to become illegal and watch as you're thrown in the SHU for a nonviolent crime. It's a slippery slope from condoning torturing violent to condoning torture in general. Why is it only legal and morally sound to some of you when the state enacts torture??

Me too in Adelanto ..30 min. to shower use the kiosk and make a quick call ..did a week there before GP the guy next door lost it , busted his own head open on the top rack

Jesse. I believe after 15 day's causes psychological problems and yrs just flat out inhuman your makin literally animals humans need to be social strip the basic needs of humans we do go insane
1. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
2. Prison system have a lot of short comings and need to focus in providing opportunity and rehabilitation.
3. For the inmates that have been released, we need to support them in any way we can.
You dont get to decide what is a crime though. Sonetimes your crime is being born into a certain race or disagree with the state.
@ 1:30 you can clearly see a vertically rectangular cut, in the wall, where there's supposed to be a window! The engineers cut a window in each cell, but the state covered them up. It looks as if it's filled in with Portland Cement.
I once spent a night in a drunk tank (solitary confinement), can you believe they threw me out before breakfast, seriously what way is that to treat a prisoner?
But on a serious note, that supermax prison is really messed up and inhumane.

Trust the most intense situation to be in I did 34 months in NYDOCS SHU
It is cruel. I stopped judging prisoners when I was in hospital after an ankle fusion. I was in an auto crash and my ankle was smashed. After the surgery, my nerve block for pain wore off and all hellish torturous pain broke loose. NO ONE would give me anything to relieve pain, or else they did and it didn't do anything bc it was beyond belief. I said that I wouldn't wish this suffering on any prisoner, no matter what they did. And it's true; suffering is suffering. This is the U.S.A. in the 21st Century. Why does solitary still exist with programs like the A.C.L.U. and human rights coalitions? If one day someone is going to be released, or not, it's not wise to break them down beyond repair. I would turn into a worse creature.
I unfortunately have been to jail. 99% are guilty and can't take responsibility. The few times I have been arrested it was my wrong doing. I am grateful I was able to go through veterans court
It’s kinda a trip these inmates see nothing but concrete, metal, and windows but right outside their prison is some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world (I’d argue)
They dont have Windows to look out of so its the deepest darkest hole you csn be in with no one therr to pull you out its a hard place to be in
We are human beings and we have feelings of hate and love for each other

When my dad was a senior corrections officer, putting them in a small, tiny, cell is illegal. They jus5 put you in a padded chair and strap down your hands, arms, feet, and chest with metal. And every know and then they let you get up for a rest period.
And there victim might never see the light of day again either or touch a blade a grass.
The most logical and balanced argument here. The rest of commentators must either be crooks, or the relatives of such crooks. I hate it when people sympathise with the aggressor but never the victim.
Regardless of the crime, your there for a reason. It’s sad, but so is the crime that was committed. Family and friends are hurt too. If it’s karma. It is what it is just like when the crime went down. Hope they find peace within. Because that decision that one day is why they are there. It was Wrong and it came with a price. God Bless everyone. You have two options...lock them up forever or lock them up with an ability for them to gain control and accountability. Cages make animals meaner....lock up but start to rebuild them...

They were already mentally damaged in order to have commited the crimes that landed them there.
It depends on the crime. If 1 of these guys brutally raped or killed someone you loved, and they had no chance of parole, then perhaps their suffering is justified. But if it is for punitive, or financial reasons and the person is to be released to society at some stage, then it is creating monsters.
