    It's funny how this is different by level of football. In high school, we used to change plays, alignments, blocking schemes, etc based on our HC drawing it up differently and making the change to the play design at halftime. NFL halftime is so quick that you basically only have time to say "this is working and this isn't working". Can't really change a play design mid game. Plus as they said, the time it takes for the coordinators to get from the booth to the locker room in these huge stadiums isn't quite worth it.

      For sure, the fact it’s their job and have a whole week of studying their opponents with the highest level of coaching makes halftime more of a time for a mental reset or quick snack rather than adding to an already 500 page playbook

      also the plays in HS are simple by comparison so it's easier to modify them on the fly. the coordination and precision required for nfl plays is at another level so you can't really change anything without risking jacking up some other important aspect or open up a weakness.

      McVay once said the only time of his career he made halftime adjustments was the Super Bowl loss against the Patriots. And all of those adjustments backfired. Things didn’t go well in the first half, so he panicked. But when his panic moved didn’t work, he learned to just keep sticking it out for 60 minutes. And he won a Super Bowl in the time sense

    used to be a low level staffer and i've always had this same thought too...People I think forget halftime in NFL is only 12 min long because College and HS are much longer. The players literally get in there, take a piss, eat a pbj and orange slice and then a 30 second speech by HC and bam head back out. I was part of one Super Bowl and that took incredibly long and was weird switch up. I will say from experience the nastiest place to be is an NFL locker room right when the team arrives. Outside the locker room, halftime can seem like it takes forever, so it has to be filled with something. But factor in how long it takes to get to the locker room and get back out, and suddenly, halftime doesn't seem that long at all.

    • @Gamer2k4
      @Gamer2k4 3 місяці тому +4

      And why do some teams always start strong and can't finish games, while others make it happen all the way through?
      My guess would be that no one CALLS them halftime adjustments - as in, a completely new gameplan that you draw up between quarters 2 and 3 - but the good teams with the good coaches absolutely change what they call as the game goes on, which results in adjustments that are noticed after halftime.

    • @MeTube1988

    As a hi school coach coach myself, this is true. You don’t really do a whole lot at half time other than try to motivate your players and throw things out that are not working and maybe add a few things that you realize could work other than that it’s mostly just your players getting motivated enough to fight harder in the second half.

    The”adjustments” probably happen more likely in between drives on the sideline with positional coaches and they aren’t big. Probably things as small as “hey your depth is a yard to deep come up a little bit” any major changes should have been already prepared and planned for. It’s like hitting in baseball, mid game is not the time to work on your swing and try new things.

    Halftime adjustments might be a myth but momentum is real. We see it it all sports that when there is a stoppage of play for a significant amount of time (baseball rain delay etc) then it resets any momentum and often the other team seizes the momentum after the stoppage. This is my theory anyway.

    I’ve seen how playsheets are broken down. There’s a bunch of plays for all the different downs and distance situations and it often changes game to game. So they can say if we’re given this look we know these plays at this down and distance we like and these we don’t like. These ones worked earlier, these ones didn’t. They scout how every team and player plays all their different formations and concepts and add in plays to counter all of that. It makes sense they don’t go in to the locker room and change the whole plan because of some bad drives in the first half. It already on the sheet and in the players heads how everything should look.

    I think some of this is crap. If what you are doing is not working you darn sure better be thinking of trying something else. I think a couple of them made the point that "adjustments" happen throughout the game, so it seem silly to claim that at halftime when you have a few extra minutes to think that some adjustments are not considered. In so far as the players, sure they need to hit the head and grab a bite, but they are not the ones making the adjustments. I think adjustments simply mean using plays in certain situations differently than you did in the first half. Or maybe switching up which defender matches up with which receiver etc. It doesn't imply that brand new plays are drawn up, which would be impossible in any case.

      Ask lobbyists how they convince 500+ members of Congress to vote their way. Short answer: They don't. Every lobbyist will tell you that they only need to sway 10 Congressmen, at most, and the rest of the votes will go their way. Same with the NFL or the NBA. You don't need every player. You just need one or two, and of course, you don't even need all of the referees. It's a myth that everyone has to be involved. That's simply untrue. It only takes a couple of people to sway the entire game. I don't know how anyone could think that sports betting is a thing, but Vegas is just going to allow game outcomes to happen by chance. No. Vegas doesn't do that. It's all rigged.
      Do you really think Taylor Swift just happened to start dating Travis Kelce in the same year that she gets free TV time throughout the season and during the Super Bowl? Of course not. There was a contract that was signed between the NFL and Taylor Swift. Just look at how much money the NFL made last season, how much the ratings got a boost because all those Swifties were suddenly watching Chiefs games and buying Kelce jerseys. There's so much money involved now that common sense dictates that it is rigged.
