It’s one thing to play this tune even remotely close. It’s another to play it, tab it, write the music, and 100% nail every single articulation that makes this song sound as cool as it does. I would argue that reproducing it is more challenging than just playing it the way you play. I’m just blown away...
For any new players out there: even if you think you are not ready, learn this. Learn it slow but with the proper timing. The most important thing is making it groove, even if it's slow. This particular bassline sounds even better slow(ish), imho
It's just standard high-level technique; come down on the frets from above not from the side, stay in position spanning 4 frets whenever possible, and don't waste motion/energy; the better you are at it the easier playing looks
This is the piece that broke my decade long spell of indifference and lack of dedication to practice I couldn't even play this at 25% when I started Thanks so much for this great play along tab, it's been meaningful to climb this mountain It's been too long since I've exercised this part of myself Keep it up Nate!
My BOY did it! Woo! I honestly wasn't sure if you'd cover any Vulpeck but I'm happy to see the cleanest bassist on youtube ripping up the other cleanest bassist on youtube's tracks.
This is perfect. Just a video of dude playing this with the tabs scrolling by in real time. All that other shit I normally skip through in other people’s instructional videos is gone. Perfect.
Interesting that this is not the first time Nathan's uploaded a cover of the same song that juliaplaysgroove just also uploaded, and we get to compare the two different approaches. In this case, Nathan's ample experience as a professional bassist and also his stamina immediately stood out, as Julia really struggled right off the bat with the relentless 16th note intro section, being much younger, with less experience, and a lot less stamina.
Nathan is incredible. I think his channel provides a lot of content for the bass community that Julia’s doesn’t, and he posts a lot more often. @@ralual getting better. I can play at full speed now but it's hit and miss. I find i have to really focus with this track, warm up first, play through a couple of times, have a ten minute break then come back and I can almost nail it.
Yessss! Perfect Nathan. Would love to see even more Vulfpeck! Disco Ulysses, Skymall or Daddy He Got A Tesla Also how do you play the fast end part of that main riff so perfectly. I can get it every now and then but my fingers tend to trip over themselevs
Thanks, MJTbreww! For the last part of the main riff I switch from one finger per fret (index on 4) for the last beat of measure 55, to a three fret span at measure 56 with bridging on the ascending 4th in beat 2, then back to one finger per fret (index on 4) at measure 57. Check out 2:08 for a close-up, and slow it down if you like.
Nathan Navarro Thanks for the response Nathan! I’ve got the fretting hand down pat it’s mainly the plucking hand. I don’t have a strict alternating finger “pluck” which begins to crumble, on the third note (4th fret on the D string) I tend to just use my middle finger which often leads to shortening it to one longer note vs two. I guess a fix would be just slow practice?
Like everyone else, I stumbled onto this video and loved how perfectly you play the song. Sounded like total perfection to me on a very challenging song. Nice job!
Nathan I cannot thank you enough for making this. There's another tab video on youtube but the fingering is not as natural as this one for me. I've just got my bass 2 weeks ago and I'm practicing this nonstop every day. (I played classical guitar for long time before) I first tried to clap my hands to your playing / tab to get the funky groove down in 0.25 then 0.5 then 0.75 then 1.0 speed Now I am trying to follow playing along the notes, again, first at 0.25, then 0.5. I'm currently trying to play it at 0.75 speed the most difficult part for me was the funky rhythm and moving up the fret-board as the spacing on a bass is quite larger than that of a guitar. I hope soon to able to play this song, maybe I won't have the stamina for the whole thing but definitely the intro until the end of the first breakdown. When I managed this song I'll upload a video here and link you. Again I just want to express my gratitude of you making this. It really really helped me out.
I think it's quite the opposite. the funky part is carefully crafted, it might have been born out of a jam session, but in the song it is definitely planned to the 1/16th beat, note how the drum and the rest of the instruments play in tight tight timing with the bass
There’s a clear repeated melodies that aren’t that long. How do you think pianists remember classical pieces a million notes or guitarists playing 5 minute solos? Enough practice just engraves it into your head
@@dewinmoonl Actually, I read somewhere that the pianist in Vulfpeck composed this song specifically for Joe Dart as a challenge or something... or maybe it was an ode to Joe Dart. Either way, it's an absolute stinker of a song to play!

Did my first 100% speed. It was fairly sloppy but overall I am impressed with how well I kept up and how fast I learned this. Time to slow it back down and really lock in the technique!
I've only just managed to get to a point where I don't get lost but it still sounds like garbage at full speed after practicing it for almost a month. I can barely play it properly at 75% which, believe it or not, is quite an improvement for me.

I started out self taught, and a big game changer I learned once I took lessons was to use the rest of the hand to support your ring/pinky when fretting with them. Makes it a lot easier to keep pressure on the string without fatigue.
Do you have something attached to your pickups there? It looks like you have something that lets your thumb go closer to the strings to make the floating thumb technique easier?
@Nate Navarro Can you or someone else tell me where I can get that spongey-looking finger rest you're using that sits closer to your bridge on your p-bass? I used to always rest my thumb on top of the pickup, but I want a rest closer to the bridge. Thank you!
Hey would you mind explaining what you are doing with the fingering at around 1:10 ? At measure 30 when there's that chromatic ascend? I'm learning this right now and I'm really struggling getting the last note in there before the fourth jump and I saw you doing something I couldn't figure out and that's not exactly what written on the tabs? That would mean a lot to me thanks!
