in that times Tangerine Dream was the best, (I saw them Live in Hanburg playing "Logos" ,in 1982 (or 83)) .Can't believe this was recorded 49 years ago...
That's so amazing, I bought a crappy bootleg on VHS back in the 80s. I remember reading the pope stopped them from having concerts in the Catholic cathedrals shortly after this performance.
Ricochet blew my mind the first time I heard it - and I keep coming back to it. So unique, so groundbreaking, so ahead of its time. Thank you Germany for Tangerine Dream & Kraftwerk.
THIS IS ALL PERFECTION IN MUSIC....THREE GIANTS IN ELECTRONICS....SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCES...............THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SHARING..............
An absolutely iconic musical event, performed by one of the spearheads of experimental electronic music. TD merged in this concert elements of classical & contemporary music and created one of the most outstanding concerts of all times. A German (!) band performing at one of the most significant churches in the UK, once raided by the German Luftwaffe - what a way to symbolise forgiveness and hopefully everlasting peace between former enemies. Hats of to Tangerine Dream for taking on this challenge, and a big compliment to the Poms for welcoming us Krauts in their country.
To all of you who are bemoaning the absence of the actual sound from the concert: I actually wrote to Tony Palmer the director a few years back asking him what had happened, and he very graciously took the trouble to reply. I don't have the email any more but the tale is this.... The whole concert was filmed (by Tony Palmer and crew), soundtrack and all...some 100 minutes. It was seemingly funded by Virgin with a view to licensing it to the BBC, hence Branson had initial power of approval. Tony Palmer delivered a 52 minute master edit to Virgin (with original sound) with a view to it being shown on BBC arts programme `Omnibus'. That was the last Tony saw of it until a year after the concert, when it was finally shown in October 1976 as a stand alone programme, and had been slashed down to 30 minutes with the original concert soundtrack replaced with `Ricochet'. He has since tried without success to track down the original edit which Virgin of course can find no trace of. Knowing Branson as we do, my theory is that he saw it as a golden opportunity to create a free promo slot for Ricochet, and had the soundtrack replaced. He even hammered it home with a `Music From The Album `Ricochet' on Virgin Records' caption at the end of the programme....on the BBC, a strictly non commercial broadcaster for whom this would have been strictly against the guidelines. Hope this helps solve the mystery ?
Two UNFORTUNATE FACTS COMING TOGETHER. Tapes were expensive and had to be erased to use again. AND, few people know the value of art at the time of creation,
so,.the upcoming release ist still partly Ricochet? Thanks in advance - here the link and text:
Film director Tony Palmer had always been deeply unsatisfied with his film of Tangerine Dream. For one thing, it contained the wrong music!
Palmer explains: "Well, it was a cunning piece of Richard Bransonism! That is, it was the soundtrack of the yet-to-be-released album. So, he was doing a cunning bit of PR, because what they played in Coventry cathedral was music from two existing albums and that was of no interest to him whatsoever. What was interesting for Richard, and what was important for Richard - I respect that, of course - was to promote the new, not-yet-released album. And I was a sucker, and I fell for it, and we cut all the pictures to the new, yet-to-be-released album. So what we’ve done this time is we’ve actually gone back and listened again to the music they did actually play, and of course now, I realise that it was quite different. And I’ve had to recut not all the pictures, but a great many of the pictures to that soundtrack."
This DVD also contains footage of Tangerine Dream from the music programme, All You Need is Love. burningshed.com/tangerine-dream_live-at-coventry-cathedral-1975_boxset?filter_tag=tangerine%20dream
in a way i wish i never read this comment regarding the sound and i just want to hear the real performance now, i actually held this performance in such high regard sound wise also.
@@UpandDownRacing If you check out the 2019 reissue of Stratosfear you will find 30 minutes of the actual Coventry Cathedral concert audio in pristine quality. It's also on the In Search Of Hades boxed set.
Can’t believe I missed this by three years. A great fan of TD since the year this was filmed, I started at Warwick Uni in ‘78. Still, I was awarded my first degree in that very spot where they’re playing, so feel a connection every time I see this 😊
Ditto what Bee Kay said below. The 70's and 80's were the best times for TD. Once digital synthesis came to the forefront, they lost much of that fat analog sound. Nowadays, they're just not the same anymore. Thanks for uploading this.
I accidentally caught this on Swedish TV in 1976/77, and it was my first contact with TD. And when I soon after bought my first album with them, I was surprised to hear that it was the same music...as explained below. But the LP is still my favourite out of some 150 albums I've bought through the years, alongside 'Force Majeure' 1979...
Absolut GENIAL !!!!! auch nach sooo langer Zeit ... ich hoffe auf das Konzert im Sommer... see ya.... das Konzert in 2022 in der Kathedrale war großartig hoffe auf eine Veröffentlichung... Danke TD
The album was released in 1975. It consists of two long compositions mixed from taped recordings of the England and France portions of their autumn 1975 European Tour. Much of the raw material for Ricochet, in particular part 2, was recorded at Fairfield Halls in Croydon, London, during Tangerine Dream's live performance there in October, 1975. The original, unedited version of this performance can be heard in set 3 of The Bootleg Box Set Vol. 1. (info from wikipedia).
At age 18 I missed this. But did arrive in Coventry in 77 at the Lanch ( Lanchester Polytechnic : now of course a "uni") and lived first year in Halls of Residence opposite the Cathedral.

Aha! Cast your mind back - 1978 or 1979. Can you remember recording a dble KS album called X on 2 Fuji c60's on your - I think - pioneer or hitachi deck for a very keen KS fan. Well, this KS fan still has those tapes. You'll be glad to hear also that he remains a Froese/Franke /Baumann/Schmoelling diehard as well as KS naturally even after all these years. If you still like this synth style then try Nachtmusik by Lightwave - very similar in many ways. And on YT - try Face 5 by Detlef Keller - very similar to Okefenokee but both worthy of your attention. In the meantime, I wish you well and hope to hear back from you. I saw them in 1976 in Cleveland, Ohio....they used a Quadraphonic sound system and had the Lazarium Light Show. Unbelievable !!!!

Nope...1976...I worked for Wooster Brush Co...in Wooster, Ohio at the time...they did Cold Water Canyon etc, there is a live album from that tour....
OOPS....1977....instead of 1976 !!!
April, 2, 1977 at The Cleveland Music Hall to be precise !!!
