    Awe, I enjoyed watching this.
    I have a customer who is deaf and poor guy always wants to order a sandwich and no one understands him. I hope to learn more sign language just for him to make his life easier. At least when he got to the register I knew how to thank you in sign language back to him and his eyes lit up and he was happy. :)

    i do want to correct two things, when you use a wh- question (who, what, when, where, why, and even how many/how much) you sign the wh- at the end of the question, so instead of "what your name?" you sign "your name what?" or "you going where?" or when asking who someone is e.g.- "brown shirt red hair who?" and its important to lower your eye brows while asking, also pointing your finger is does not mean "your" it means "you". Possessive "your" is to stick your palm out like a "B" at someone. this can be used is "your", "my", "his/hers" "theirs", "ours" etc. where as pointing with your index is "you", "me", "him/her", "they", "us" and so on. In my college asl 1010 course my professor did "you* name what?" but by asl 1020 my new professor was strict on the "your" sign so it was now "your name what?". Hope this helps :)

      Thanks! There are different schools of thought on some of those points, but I do like what you said. This video was using ASL pigeon sign, which is using the ASL signs with English grammar. Which is one way that people do use ASL, at my son's school for the deaf, they use pigeon for students when they are first learning so they can focus on learning the signs and not worry as much about the grammar. But what you are saying is right, for strictly ASL, you do the question after.
      In an ASL course I took the professor did use the sign of 'you' for asking names. 'name you' with the eyebrows down (as you described), meaning 'what is your name?' I'm not sure if that is a preference thing, or one way is universally 'correct' when we communicate with my son's teachers they do both. Often they'll just lower eyebrows and sign name, but I'm pretty sure that's like 'slang'.
      Either way I appreciate your comments! Thanks for watching!

      Eric Buffington I'm guessi g the "you" and "your" is a preference thing then. My first asl professor always signed "you" but my current professor signs "your" and gets on us about using correct possessive. I think he just prefers "your" as it is grammatically correct but both are techniquely correct too and to be honest I see more people sign "You name what?" Rather than "your name what?". I'll have to ask around :)

      Sounds good. There is lots of variation in signing, like there is in speaking, but I'm sure there is a 'right' way out there somewhere. :) Good luck with the class. This is a great second language to know.

    As someone who's become embarrassingly rusty at signing, this is great for review purposes. Thanks for uploading!

    Son is adorable !
    I’ve been watching ASL videos non-stop because I watch a dear child at my church & only have limited knowledge about ASL.
    I just needed to know questions, but colors were a great review !

      That's so great! We love when people make an effort to learn some ASL to communicate with our son. I'm sure your friend at church will too.

    This is good for people that is not deaf but they want to talk to people that may be deaf and this is a good thing to watch because you are learning something new when you watch this and the little boy in this video is so cute and adorable. And one day this guy came to me and he was deaf and he wanted a dollar but I didn't understand him so this helps me learn more about deaf in a bad situation and some people that is not deaf should watch this am I right or wrong.

    Does it matter if you do it right or left handed? I'm right handed and would much prefer that. I didn't know if the video was flipped in order for us to follow it easier. Thank you!

    • @EricBuffington
      @EricBuffington  6 років тому +1

      Great question! She is left handed so she uses her dominant hand. That is helpful for most people to mirror her. You use your dominant hand for the more 'active' part of signs, so whatever she is doing with her left, you would do with your right.

    Pidgin is not a language. It is a manually coded bridge between English and ASL. ASL evolved since its introduction to the U.S. from France into a fully functional language apart from other languages. It is correct that ASL's main contributor includes French sign, but other contributors include the sign from Martha's Vineyard (Kent Sign origin) and home signs. I am not an expert, so your viewers should research the veracity of my statements.

    This video is highly dependent on spoken language and has no captions--not accessible to Deaf people and this is THEIR language! It's also labeled ASL and then it's actually PSE! Not Deaf friendly at all!

    • @EricBuffington
      @EricBuffington  6 років тому +1

      This video was not made as a general helpful tool for deaf people. It was made for our friends to communicate with our son who speaks ASL and PSE. But thank you for the feedback.
