    Fun fact: my brother was born with Down syndrome, we thought he was deaf bc he failed his first 3 hearing tests. Sooo I learned sign language for him. Then in kindergarten I met my bff who was deaf. So I’m fluent in sign language!!
    Fun fact #2: you CANNOT give yourself a name sign, a deaf/hard of hearing person HAS to do it!!

    One that is important is that if you are hearing, you CANNOT give yourself (or anyone for that matter) a name sign. In simplest terms, it is a "rule" that only a deaf individual can give you a
    name sign. They understand your personality from a different perspective, and they likely also know others' name signs in the local Deaf community.So, all of that being said, unless a deaf individual has given you a name sign, just go ahead and fingerspell your name. It's not like everyone will automatically know your name sign anyways.

    • @madib8487

      Her brother was not part of the Deaf community though. The key here is the uppercase D, that means that that person is involved in the culture and community of Deaf people who sign across the nation. Her brother, from what she described, was deaf with a little d. The only people who can give name signs are those who are Deaf :)

      Madi B I'm hearing but my uncle is deaf and he has allways told me that either deaf or

    • @madib8487

      Stephen Cottman Yes maybe different over there. Tends to only be given by a member of the Deaf community because deaf people rarely even learn to sign. They don't consider themselves a part of Deaf culture or community.

      @@SARAH-ry2nh if you're still interested from what I know is it's because of the Deaf community. A sign name means you're part of the community and they talk about you when you're gone and they want to talk about you easier(not in a gossipy way in a "oh where is *name*". • @moustachebroadcast8543
      @moustachebroadcast8543 6 років тому +23

      E. Russell The actual term “switched at birth” means that at birth, most likely in the hospital, two babies were switched, so one family took home another family’s baby and vice versa. Most switches happen due to an error at a hospital. What the people above are talking about though is a tv show about two girls who were switched at birth. One of the switched daughters, Daphne is deaf, hence all the people talking about switched at birth on an asl video. If you want to watch the show I’d highly recommend it, you can find it on Netflix if you have it

    I was at the store and saw a man and a woman communicating in sign language. I was watching them. But then they saw me. And I guess they didn't know that I knew some sign language and they started talking about me. Signing stuff like "the girl in the gray sweatshirt is looking at you." And I was the only one around wearing a gray sweatshirt.

They’re not deaf?” I went with my family and mom’s friends family who has some deaf people, same with my family, I just found it very rude

    Story time: I was traveling Europe with a girl scout group and I met some girls who were learning sign language so one night when we were walking around London. I learned the alphabet and some basic words in one night. Then the next day we got on the London eye and there was another family on there. We asked if they wanted us to take a family picture of them and the guy let us know he was deaf. Then we signed to him even though we didn't know if he knew asl or another sign language but he turned out to know asl, it was great even though we were having to spell lots of words. He smiled so big it was amazing, inclusion is amazing. Everyone should at least know the alphabet and basic words(:

    I'm an Interpreter for The Deaf in Texas.What she did not explain about sign names is you have to be given your sign name by a leader in the deaf community. You cannot make up your own sign name and it cannot be given to you by just anyone. The deaf leader in the community takes at least 1 or more years to learn about you, they take their time and really get to know you before deciding on your sign name. It could be from what color your eyes are, how long your hair is added with your initial, some birth mark or a character or moral values you have. My sign name is a D in a upsweep at my ♥ given to me after 2 years from my Professor in ASL who is also the main leader in our deaf community. I asked him why this name? He said ( he is deaf) because you have the biggest ♥ of anyone I've ever known in my 40 years, you are kind to everyone you meet and would give them everything you own". Such a great compliment, I was humbled and honored to receive it.

    I love sign language! And since I work in public service, it could also come in handy someday. I took a class of LSQ1 (Langue des Signes Québécoise/the sign language we have in Québec, Canada) in university with a friend. The teacher was totally deaf and soooo fun. He kept joking around (he was able to talk pretty clearly, just not very loudly), even about his being deaf. I remember the first class he said something like "Don't talk while I teach, you'll disturb me", then chuckled to himself a bit before adding "That's not true, I can't even hear you" and then laughed. That man was an awesome teacher, one of the best I've had in all of my academic career.
    LSQ is used to communicate "in French" so some signs differ from those in the video, like "who, when, where", but the rest was the same. I'm no expert though, I can barely hold a basic conversation. It'd be cool if Rachel did another video with some more basic ASL signs 😊

    it’s so amazing that you are teaching sign language because i am a KODA which is kid of deaf adult. my parents are deaf and i am hearing so obviously i’m fluent 😂. sign language was my first language. me and my koda friends like to joke around about how funny it is when an hearing person encounters a deaf person for the first time because they have no idea how to react to them. thank you for telling the ignorant hearing people to not be scared of deaf people 😉❤️🤟🏻
