    • @moustachebroadcast8543
      @moustachebroadcast8543 7 років тому +23

      E. Russell The actual term “switched at birth” means that at birth, most likely in the hospital, two babies were switched, so one family took home another family’s baby and vice versa. Most switches happen due to an error at a hospital. What the people above are talking about though is a tv show about two girls who were switched at birth. One of the switched daughters, Daphne is deaf, hence all the people talking about switched at birth on an asl video. If you want to watch the show I’d highly recommend it, you can find it on Netflix if you have it

    One that is important is that if you are hearing, you CANNOT give yourself (or anyone for that matter) a name sign. In simplest terms, it is a "rule" that only a deaf individual can give you a
    name sign. They understand your personality from a different perspective, and they likely also know others' name signs in the local Deaf community.So, all of that being said, unless a deaf individual has given you a name sign, just go ahead and fingerspell your name. It's not like everyone will automatically know your name sign anyways.

      Her brother was not part of the Deaf community though. The key here is the uppercase D, that means that that person is involved in the culture and community of Deaf people who sign across the nation. Her brother, from what she described, was deaf with a little d. The only people who can give name signs are those who are Deaf :)

      Stephen Cottman Yes maybe different over there. Tends to only be given by a member of the Deaf community because deaf people rarely even learn to sign. They don't consider themselves a part of Deaf culture or community.

    I'm an Interpreter for The Deaf in Texas.What she did not explain about sign names is you have to be given your sign name by a leader in the deaf community. You cannot make up your own sign name and it cannot be given to you by just anyone. The deaf leader in the community takes at least 1 or more years to learn about you, they take their time and really get to know you before deciding on your sign name. It could be from what color your eyes are, how long your hair is added with your initial, some birth mark or a character or moral values you have. My sign name is a D in a upsweep at my ♥ given to me after 2 years from my Professor in ASL who is also the main leader in our deaf community. I asked him why this name? He said ( he is deaf) because you have the biggest ♥ of anyone I've ever known in my 40 years, you are kind to everyone you meet and would give them everything you own". Such a great compliment, I was humbled and honored to receive it.

      @@Nekotaku_TV a sign name? In ASL, you can fingerspell names as in letter by letter spell it out using the ASL alphabet. Or use and can a sign name which is a sign that takes the place of fingerspelling. Only a deaf person is to give a sign name to a hearing person as is their language and culture

    This was fantastic. I learnt a bit from school having attended a primary (elementary) school that was 60% disabled children. It was an intervention school where siblings could also go with the disabled sibling. Many of the kids used sign language even if not deaf so I can do the whole ausland alphabet, toilet, please/Thankyou, yes/no, food and one of the girls would always sign p*** off/f*** you so I learnt that from around 6 years old.

      Bea LlamaLove I never said they are! My sister has a disability, she has global intellectual disability. She use to use sign language. Many of the other kids did too. Blindness and deafness are both disabilities under definition. Are the people therefore disadvantage, no not always. Many Down syndrome kids from my primary school, or cerebral palsy, autistic or intellectually impaired children would use it.
      This was my point!

    • @graceelizabeth6977
      @graceelizabeth6977 6 років тому

      taz kempf please don’t say that kids with Down syndrome have a disability. They don’t. My little sister has it and is smarter and more mobile than I was at age two. It took her longer to get there but she still accomplished it. She knows lots of signs and is continuing to learn asl. She is not disabled just slightly challenged. Don’t dis her ability.

    I like learning from you because you make it fun and funny. When you say little funny examples it makes it rememberable and it makes more sense!

    I am recently trying to learn Asl on my own. I had a full tracheotomy done for health issues. I really enjoy your energy and enthusiasm. I am hoping that is the trick to keep motivated and learn! So thank you for your videos!🌹

    Last night I was hanging out with my boyfriend and he has a friend who is deaf. I felt so upset with myself that I couldn’t communicate with him because I’ve always wanted to learn to sign. This video was SO helpful I can’t wait to try to communicate with him!! Thank you! Please make more videos like this!!
